seriously, what has happened on our rides? tagging has been a problem for some time, and I am adamantly against destruction/theft of property for this reason:
tagging hurts local businesses and makes them call the cops
and of course, stealing from other Ridazz? well, i dont think i need to say more. this shit's gotta stop. it's only possible for so long to let everyone "have fun in their own way," because someone's idea of fun is destroying someone else's.
i'm sad to hear it's come to this, but please people,
free-lock your bikes,
carry your bags, and
don't leave expensive lights on your bikes.
maybe we can have a bag-check at the trailer. if i was a thief, i wouldnt try to steal within 6 feet of big bike dan.

i think a lot of people, including myself let our guards down about how secure our stuff was around our friends. it was ok for a time, but everyone should be on notice. your shit aint safe.

there need to be an understaning for the ecomonic situation and realize that its only gonna get worse. so the besthing to do is build a cyclist community free from Elitism. to look after each other.

right at the beginning of the nerd ride a group of about five show up and park their bikes next to where i was standing, right after they disappeared. like if i had the obligation to take care of their shit. so when "rolling out" came i jumped on my shit and left and those five where nowhere to be seen. so five expensive bikes where left unlocked and unattended, the you wonder why stuff goes missing.

Theft has always been a problem, it's not new. It's not the economy, it's human fucking nature. I had my bike stolen on Midnight Ridazz in 2006! On my birthday. I was drunk, and distracted. It happens, it will happen again. So it's well within our duty to watch out for our own, and that's how we do it, and should continue to do it.

I'm not whining or complaining, i realize it was my fault and all, and almost more significantly i've been in this scene for two and half years without getting ANYTHING stolen except for a couple spoke cards, BUT:
I left my pannier in mikey's room last night, full of ONLY people i knew, and it disappeared in less than an hour. That's fucked up. But it's not all that surprising. That's just the way things are.
so let me be one of many examples to ya'll - lock your bike and don't let your bag out of your sight!

hang onto all ur shit. that means, don't leave ur bag on the ground somewhere, don't leave ur bike locked up and walk away bc theres a lot more to steal off ur bike other than just wheels and frame etc. if i was a thief i'd be stealing handle bars and saddles.
everyone feels like they can trust their fellow "cyclist". no, you can't.
and please, don't blame the economy. blame the economy when people are stealing food and necessities. when fools steal ur bike or wheels or light etc, it just means that you have some fly shit and it was left open for an easy grab.

half of those guys that steal and tag probably hear about these rides via word of mouth. you'd expect with everyone over-preaching safety and F.U.N. on the forums it should be safe.
the only solution is to check for your own shit, trust no-one but your circle, and conduct yourself within your own standards. theres a big difference between not trusting one and showing distrust towards another. exercise common sense.
i wouldn't leave my bag alone ANYWHERE, let alone an MR ride. you guys are too trusting, and so you be victimized. i've learned my lesson.

Having a bag check in sounds like a lot of work and too much responsibility for a few people. I wouldn't want that responsibilty maybe some kind soul will..... I still wouldn't feel safe because I never feel safe leaving my shit.

As for that camera I had that went missing at the September CRANK Mob, I'm still baffled as to how that occurred.

I'd leave my bike sitting alone on a sidewalk downtown before I would leave it unattended on a ride. The rides are full of people willing to steal.
On almost every ride I see a large circle of kids (pretty much the same kids every time) who don't talk to anyone outside their circle. They stand around and smoke and tag and wait for us to be lazy and they attack.
I bet they think they are really smart getting away with all their bullshit right under our noses.
Its time for people to stop paying attention to just their own shit and start really trying to catch some of these fuckers in the act. If you stop for a second and look around at the stops you can see it all very clearly.
There's two groups now on the ride the THE SHEEP and THE WOLVES.
We need a wolf that looks like a sheep.

There is a great appreciation of street art on midnight ridazz.
And a serious distrust of corporations and rules that are created for the benefit of the ownership society.
So tagging billboards and stealing from corporations is not something that a lot of people here lose a lot of sleep about in the wide world of crimes and injustice.
What people DO care about is how people act when they are representing midnight ridazz.
Most everybody agrees that stealing from individuals sucks.
But what some people don't understand is that when they leave a negative impact on the communities we pass through it reflects on all of us. If we stop at a store and people start tagging, stealing, and leaving trash it reflects negatively on our group.
We get away with bending lots of rules. But if people start seeing a wake of destruction in our path, they arn't going to be too welcoming to us, and be quick to call the cops and complain when they get annoyed. Things will be less fun.
I'm not gonna make moral judgements against people who steal from corporations or feel a need to make a mark in/on the world. But, be a big boy or girl and do that shit on your own time, not when you are hiding in the anonymity of our group and gambling with OUR social capital.

in the sense that we are all fighting for space.
there is a reason why fixie culture/ street cycling culture appeals to a lot of people that are into street art, and its not just because its the easiest way to get around town and get up.
there are some overlapping sensibilities there.
just as OUR streets are dominated by cars
OUR visual landscape is dominated by corporate advertising.
its not like cycling is the 5th pillar of hip hop ... but there is a correlation there between bikes and graf.

i used to live next door to the "crank mob" albertsons, and i used to talk to the night manager about crank mob. we scared the shit out of him every time we came in, but he always appreciated that people stayed afterwards to clean, and that people were willing to pay for stolen merchandise.
if people started tagging on the walls, i'm sure we'd get shut down pretty quick, and that the cops would be tailing us non-stop. remember kids, police are allocated to areas not based on the murder rate, but on dollars of property loss or damage.

but we cant force anyone to obey the law. we can only put it out there and hope they see things our way. if you see someone tagging in your neighborhood, just let him know the homie works here and is going to have to scrub the wall now.
tell them to write it on the sidewalk where it doesnt hurt anybody. we're all a part of the communities we ride in. i would be just as upset to see someone tagging my neighborhood liquor store as my own house.

i guess there is a delicate balance between watching out for the group's interest and acting as the "Fun Police".
Most of us have no interest in playing cop/babysitter but when people are doing shit that could easily have a negative impact on the group: ie. wild wheelies, throwing bottles, wrecking shit etc. (as rare as those things are) it's incumbent upon those of us that care to remind people that their actions reflect the group.
people do lots of stupid shit in a mob, because they know they can get away with it. and its important to clue newer/ dumber/ drunker people that thats not the purpose of MR.
MR works because enough of us know the deal and project that.
Usually we don;t need to say anything ... but when lots of new people join us we may need to educate. Every spring and summer gets crazy we should expect big numbers of new people again this year.
