The UFO Ride

(The ride the FAA won't tell you about.)
A strange phenomenon has been occurring in the N.E. Los Angeles Area. Multiple sightings of apparent U.F.O.'s have been reported in this area. Is it a freaky weather condition? Or, has Lord Zenu been freed to ensue chaos upon this town?
It's up to YOU to prove it!
Wear your extra-terrestrial accoutrement and join us on the first official Midnight Ridazz of the new year.
When:
Friday January 12th, 2006

There are two huge parking lots across from each other. If the it becomes a problem in the lot's we can move to the ave 57 station visible one block north of the parking lots. I don't forsee any problem with Mr. T's parking lot. I'ts bigger than the Echo Park Pioneer Chicken spot.

Culver City Ridazz - Meet at Trader Joes at 7:45, take off at 8:00 PM.
We'll head inland down Venice, turn left at Western to the Metro station at Wilshire.
It's about a 4.5 mile ride from Culver City to the Metro Station.
Route Home:
Take the 110 Bike path to Griffin Ave, turn right onto Main, then right onto Venice Blvd.
It's about a 16 mile ride back home, most of it slightly down hill. I've never done this route before, but will bring a map. Might be a little extra peddling involved, but we'll find our way home OK.

For those of you who have any interest in the sky objects, there is a really cool looking comet right now in the sky, close to the Sun. You can get a much better view right at the sunset, once the sun is down but the comet is still visible. As soon as you can spot Venus (the brightest star-like object in the sky right now), you can easily see comet McNaught. A few days ago it had only a bright head, but now that it’s closer to the sun it has a beautiful tail, too. It’s a really cool thing to see. If you have a pair of binoculars you can get an even better view. But don’t wait too long. With every day it gets closer to the sun, which means it will be harder to see it in the glare. Have fun and enjoy the show mother Nature provided for us. Cheers, NC.

I was actually roasting on the way up Ave 64. Too many layers, maybe, but I wouldn't have wanted to be without them before/after 64.
Sad to see the pack splinter so much (but I hear that is normal), glad I was a semi-local/could run herd on those I found when directions got fouled up.
Met a lot of other first timers, as well. Didn't know how many regulars would show on a night like this, glad to see other new riders also willing to head out despite the cold.
So, to sum up:
Freezing cold, yet friggin hot.
Got lost in familiar territory, but it all worked out.
All in all not a bad ride for my first, hope to bring the older kid along for the next one.
Thanks, Borfo.

Rad ride!!! I didn't eat dinner, had 2 gin and tonics inside T's before the ride, so the first couple of miles (which seemed to go on forever) uphill were some serious torture. By the time we got to the Rose Bowl parking lot I couldn't see straight and I felt like I ws going to die... WHICH WAS AWESOME!!!!
The cold wasn't as big of a factor as I thought it'd be. It was a beautiful night and once I got going a little I didn't even notice it was cold. The downhill parts were rad and totally worth the pain of the climb.

Big Ups to JOE BORFO on that ride!
One of the all time classic themes and actually a really nice route. The hills were harsh it's true. but the workout kept a lot of people warm. I take a lot of responsibility for the complexities and hills since I lobbied to have the Rose Bowl inserted into the ride. This ride was pretty epic considering it was only about 15 miles.... we rode across Suicide Bridge and underneath it. and the side streets along Arroyo were so choice because of the lack of traffic. the down hills were fun as hell after the initial "torture."

Yeah, I'll chime in here and say the route was great; nice to travel to some less charted galaxys and for the most part there wasn't a of of car traffic which was pleasant and safer.
As for the hills, I say (to use a cliche) "do the math"; if you end up at the same place you started from, there is an equal amount of downhill to uphill, in other words you get out what you put in. Ride more, use your gears better, pace yourself as needed. It's all part of the experience.

Doing the spokecards was a lot of fun, actually, despite having only a vague clue as to how they are normally done. Again, cool first ride with you guys, glad to be on a bike again after so many years, already wondering if/when I could help set up a future ride, once I get a clue as to what to expect.

Can someone enlighten me as to why some riders choose to block the street and harass motorists AND pedestrians before the ride starts? it makes us look like a bunch of big, loose, dirty and smelly assholes. also, i witnessed some riders purposely riding in the second lane to block a hummer from passing. i think this sort of behavior is self-defeating and perpetuates the negative and hostile relationship between the motorists and cyclists. i actually wouldn't feel bad if one of those idiot cyclists gets injured by someone they harass.
on a positive note, i want to thank the other two west side riders who rode back with me... and the koreatown daves. thank you!

talking about the cyclists harassing motorists reminded me of something that happened that night. I brought a friend who was riding MR for the first time. We ended up losing the pack and tried to find the pack with a small group of other riders. After no idea of where the pack was, my friend and I called it quits and headed back towards the start point where we were parked. At this point it's just my friend and I riding and some moron in his car thought it would be funny to come up behind us and lock his breaks. it was a bit startling to hear car tires screeching right up on your rear. I turned around to see this guy in his car driving by laughing.

def kills it when people harass drivers. that's where Midnight Ridazz fails the general cycling community in LA.......... making enemies with motorists. enlightened self interest would dictate that we find a way to make life easy for motorists to co-exist with our parade...... stop for lights or cork for maybe one or two lights then let motorists go through and cork the Ridazz for a couple lights..... getting the FUCK outta the left lane...... things like that........ like it or not this ride is the ambassador to the motoring world for cyclists in LA. there is nothing bigger going on in the streets when it comes to cycling..... we have a lot on our shoulders.

This behavior has always puzzled me at MR. I think there's a lot of people who get tired of being harassed by cars while riding a bike, so they like to enjoy the power of safety in numbers during MR rides.
There's nothing "Enlightening" about this - 2 Wrongs don't make a Right.
