Ridazz pimp your ride
Thread started by thinkpeace at 01.1.08 - 9:07 pm

Pimp your ride and your costume for the Midnight Ridazz at the Doo Dah Parade on Sunday.

Saturday, January 19th, 12:00 noon

We'll meet in Pasadena at a location too-be-announced and get creative with our bikes, trailers and costume so that we're ready for the parade. Bring some supplies to share and post your ideas and what you can bring on the forum.

I'm thinking of making a coffin-car out of one of my trailers. I'll make a big cardboard cloud of smoke coming out the back.

I could use a set of 16" (or so wheels) to be faux front wheels on the coffin-car.

Learn, teach & share bike ornamenting techniques.
Decorate your trusty steed.
Celebrate the Age of the Bicycle!

Streamers :: Pinwheels :: Reflective Goodies :: Spoke Cards :: And??

Ideas for things to bring:

-plastic bags in nice colours or old cassette tapes to make handlebar streamers
-fake flowers
-holiday decorations: wreaths, plastic
-straws (great for putting on spokes or cables)
-funky knickknacks for 'hood' ornaments
-cards, pictures, vinyl cuttings to make into spoke cards (should be at least the size of playing cards)
-ribbon, danger tape, foil tape, embroidery thread etc to weave between spokes
-fun fur or other materials to wrap your handlebars/frame (long strips are best) and to make top tube cozies
-beads that will fit around your cables
-balloons to stick inside your spokes

You could also bring: needle/thread, embroidery thread, scissors, scotch tape, duct tape of various colours, spray paint, xacto blades.

Misc. Decoration Project Ideas So Far:
SpokeWeaving/Webbing with danger tape/yarn
Handlebar wrapping
Cable Beading
Frame Wrapping with fun fur, fabric
Frame Painting
Signs, "license" plates
Helmet decorating
Fake Flowers/wreaths
Enlarging/hacking your lights
Fun with reflectors/reflective materials
Portable sound systems
Top tube cozies

G.J.B.C. Now Enlisting

-
(the Giant Joint Building Committee)

I've decided that I will be wearing depends and my skull while riding tern's minibike and pulling a trailer with a lightweight pole which will support the front large end of the Giant Joint. The tapered end which will be reachable to puff by any rider will have to be on wheels as well, but I can't figure out yet how to devise that...

We need engineers and scientists on the G.J.B.C.

Count me on the G.J.B.C. team.

I made a simple drawing of a two-wheeled trailer to hold the smokin end of the join. It would be about 4.5 feet high to allow for easy smoking by peds.

Use a peice of 1/2" rod about 18" long for the axle. Two small bicycle wheels will be held in place by shaft colars. (I may have all these supplies).

A 10' peice of 1" EMT steel tubing will be used for the upright. (About $5 at Home Depot)

Borrow the EMT bender at while at the hardware store to put a 90 degree bend about 4' from one end of the tubing.

Drill a 1/2" hole near the bottom end to slide over the axle.

Use innertube to secure the EMT in the center of the axle.

The 90 degree bend should be torwards the mini-bike.

Lash the joint (near the smokin end) onto the horizontal portion of the EMT tubing, preferably with strips of hemp or tobacco.

Lash the somewhere between the burning end and midpoint to the pole on the trailer.

Congrats Eric - You're recruited!

I have supplies to make the Giant Joint. I have a 10 ft hight, 3/4 inch wide pvc pipe painted black to support the burning end of the Joint.

As for the Giant Joint. I Plan to use dry ice and some water rather than it be lit to make the"smoke" - unless we can get a lot of sage but that doesn't last long.)

I have endless supply of waxed paper in multiple rolls over 30 feet by 4 feet. A ton of white packing tape. And endless cardboard.

Can it say "Ride On!" on the sides? Or just leave it white?

I will need your help on the back end. I do have parts and stuff we can use in the garage.

Joe,
Be sure to roll a piece of bamboo or steel pipe inside the joint to make it sturdy, as it will be supported at two points.

Also, how long and how heavy will it be? The trailer I described can be beefed up if needed.

Also, you need a license plate that reads "420".

Eric

I think white sheets would work well for the wrapper - much sturdier than waxed paper. It could be stitched or safety-pined together. (unless zig-zag comes through with the giant rolling papers)

Ah, never mind. i just pulled these old professional, special effects smoke bombs i had left over from a job i did but one is a 3 minute and the other a 5 minute. Too short and they would totally smoke up the entire street. Way overkill for a joint of any size. Sorry.

@stevo4:

you should incorporate your "smoke bombs" into to the joint, they will definitely talk about us (MR) FOR YEARS, well probably get banded from the city of pasadena after this shit, LOL LOL LOL

i'm happy to donate them to the cause but being 'banned' did come to mind and i don't want any negative reflections to come to the Midnight Ridazz.

Having these smoke bombs sounds like a brilliant idea! As long as we can make it look like a real smoking joint, I think it'll be a hit! We'll only get banned if our joint catches fire! It would be funnier than hell, but don't think some folks will find it funny.

User1
01.6.08 - 8:15 pm

Al, these aren't your every day smoke bombs. They generate an incredible amount of smoke and could possibly even attract Firetrucks, etc. thinking its a fire. And, as i'm learning, you are supposed to put them in a bucket of water or something once they are lit. I will call the company back east that makes them tomorrow and find out more details on them.

They sound perfect!

User1
01.6.08 - 8:49 pm

Ok, This is a REALLY bad idea. I just spoke to the company that makes these. The 3 minute smoke bomb puts out 40,000 cubic feet of smoke and the 5 minute (which they've discontinued) puts out 100,000 cubic feet of smoke. They must be used in a wide open area away from people for health and safety issues.

When we used them on the movie back in Maine, we had to create fog on a big lake. You get the idea?

And, on a side note, they are only guaranteed by the manufacturer for 1 year. I have no idea if they even would still work after 17 years.

I've got a solution. Got hold of a smoke machine. We will run the smoke through the pvc pipe that holds up the front end. Easy. Just need a trailer and power.

LizardQueen - Great! bring all that shit on Sat noon.

I finished the Giant Joint Rear trailer and am focusing on my ride.

I'm gonna tow a love seat behind my pimped-out bike. Celina is my 7 year-old partner in this project. I mentioned to her the love seat idea the other day and she committed me to it and invited her frrend to ride on it in the parade. And amazingly, her friends parents were fine with this idea

"My dads gonna drag a couch behind his bike and Christina is gonna ride on it".

They're obviously pretty laid back parents. Celina's mom, on the other hand, was very concerned. I explained how we were incorporating many safety features, including a saftey helmet.
