without doing a fact check, i am 90% certain that as of january 2008, you need a passport to cross the border.

I was just asking an architect in our office who works both in SD and TJ. He said he thought they had pushed the date off until the end of this month. BUT, if you have one I'd bring it. It would suck to get here then need it. I'll poke around a little more for a solid answer.
COMING?????

I work in Mexico and currently if you travel to the US by land you don't need a passport until June, you need just a valid ID. If you travel to US by air from Mexico you need a passport now.

Any specific plans for stuff to go to in Tijuana? Has anyone who has ridden there before have any advice or anecdotes about riding in Mexico?

If anyone wants to car pool to this, I have a car that gets 40 mpg and with a bike rack. I have to be back for the Doo Dah parade the next day, so I won't be staying late. I have room for two other people.

Strongly considering coming down for this. This all depends on the night before. If I'm able to get to up earlier enough to get down there on time, yes. I'll call Tommy in the morning if I'm on my way.

Hey, I live downtown SD near the ferry terminal. I've never done one of these rides before, but this one sounds like a lot of fun. Do you think I would be able to hook up with everyone at the ferry rather than in Balboa Park at the fountain? Would someone be willing to give me their cell # in case I have a hard time finding you (seems unlikely, but still....). My email addy is hoffoss@hotmail.com.

As we've done in the past, we will take the ferry into Coronado ($3.50), ride down the strand, one of SD's very few bike only roads in between the bay and the ocean, into IB (South Bay!), east of the Tijuana Estuary, straight up to the border where we will cross (Los Cruzadores! aka The Crossers) and ride around Tijuana and probably play soccer with some local kids at a nearby park. Get food, some beer? Last time we rode to an ice cream place with 50 flavors and vegan options.
After TJ fun we will cross back and take the trolley (3$) back up into SD or ride back to coronado and take ferry back across.
Hopefully we won't get shot by any drug cartels..

Thanks to all in SD, including Randy, Tommy and Drew for awesome ride and awesomer day! I had a blast! Yeah we didn't get a chance to do the ferry ride thing, but the ride was way cool. Great group of people I met that day.
Just a little recap on this ride. -
We met at the cruise ship port to start our ride. We missed the 1pm ferry cause of delays of ridazz getting there. So we just started riding to the border from there since the next ferry wasn't until 2pm. We were guided through to some well hidden bike trails on our way to TJ. Minor mechanical problems stopped us once. We crossed the border with our bikes with no passport. Passports will be needed later this year sometime. On this day it was just a CA driver's license. Once in Mexico it was bit rougher of a road and more chaotic drivers on the road. It would have been very scary riding solo, but we were 22-25 strong this day. About 50% female. We found a restaurant to eat that was about the loudest restaurant around! We had every musician within a two block radius serenading us. Also had a non-stop barking taco bell dog living right above where we were eating outside. Then the rocking jukebox started blaring the Mexican music like only the Mexicans can! Needless to say, I was dying to get back on the saddle after that meal! After riding around Tijuana for a few miles, we rolled up to a cool neighborhood dive bar. It took most of us two beers until we realized that they had far better bargains by scaling up your orders. We discovered they had liter beers of Pacifico for $2.50! YEAH!!
Well as night started to settle in, some of the ridazz thought it was better to head back sooner rather than later. So we crossed back over around 9 or so.
Riding around TJ was blast that I would be looking forward to doing again. It really has a bit of the wild west feel to it that makes it fun to do. Hopefully the gang will do something again this summer. I look forward to hearing of anything happening. And maybe next time there will more than one lonely soul coming down to represent all of LA.
THANKS AGAIN GUYS!!
SD ROCZZ!!!!

This ride was cool with 20, it would be amazing with 50..... or 80.....
So Allan rides and parties with you on Friday. Drives down and rides and parties with us Saturday. Then drives back up to ride and party with you again. Gotta salute that!!
