Thread Box:
SF CM 15 year Anniversary
Thread started by FuzzBeast at 07.31.07 - 5:53 pm

OK.
As I know getting a group of Ridazz going takes a while, I'ma post this now so we can get it going.

The last weekend of September is the 15 year anniversary of Critical Mass. I for one would love to go to this, and think that we should definitely have a contingent of Ridazz there to celebrate this momentous occasion.

Let's figure this out, who wants to go, how we're gonna do this and whatnot.

By the way, this thread can be for plannign and shit, as the other seems to be about the recent trip.

So Fuzz, where abouts do you think we should start up?

I have seen a few west bound rides start at Wilshire/Western as it is the most south westerly Metro Startion and has a decent space for gathering.

It could also be pretty triumphant to just ball down Santa Monica the whole way.

What did you have in mind?

HEY FUZZBEAST!

I was thinking it would be nice to show some love (there never seem to be that between LA and SF-bay area) to SF for everything, that I read someone write "they have done"

I was thinking of a patch with maybe that fly or a skull rida, wearing an LA baseball cap or wearing a los angeles baseball jersey, on a bike holding a b-day cake with 15 candles(of course) maybe some wrapped presents in hanging outta of the back of it's bag.

With a message that say something to the fact of Happy birthday big/older brother/sister (I don't know which ones would be more approriate) thanks for laying the path for us. or anything that would sound good.

I know you have the art skill Fuzzy. I don't know who is making the other patches, but people can pay for them to offset the cost.

I've taken the train to SF and it takes about 12 hours. and 65 bucks. plus 17 to hold the bike.

So basically you pay the same or less to carpool and get there in half the time. Your choice. I'm going up this month again. If you are interested contact me :D

hey y'all

I'm looking at the possibility of driving up to San Jose and then taking the Cal Train on into SF. This train is supposedly geared more for the bicyclist.
http://www.caltrain.org/caltrain_bikes2.html
I was also thinking of camping somewhere along this route. I haven't done any searching yet for camp grounds on this train route and thought maybe someone would have an idea on what's available between San Jose and SF. My thoughts are that the hostels will be full of out of towners and camping would be a good alternative. I'm really not too excited about spending $250 round trip on a train tix either. BTW it's about 360 miles to San Jose.

Any campgrounds or hostels outside of SF and between SF and San Jose? It would be cool to get a big tribe in a campground too.

I'm down... or up for it... or yeah. I plan on going. SF is close enough, and big enough, and a lot of people know enough peeps there, that it shouldn't be that big of a deal to figure out how to get up there, and stay there. just sayin, because I was just up there. and it was a blast.

Very Good, the train is an excellent idea.

If we left LA union station on friday morning, at 10:15am, we will arrive at Oaklands Jack London Station (if there is no delays) at 9:32pm, at the cost of $66 one way. OH SHIT WE WILL MISS THE RIDE THEN

or

We can leave Thursday morning at the same time schedule for the low price of $95 one way, return is around $66 on the train leaving oakland at 8:50am and getting back to LA union station at 9:00pm ( that is, if ther is no delays)

You could do the amtrak bus, and the amtrak train part way, and bus the other part to San Francisco.
This is how that works, Take the amtrak bus out of LA union station at 1:25am and arrive in Bakerfield at 4:40am and take the train to emeryville at 4:55am arrive at 10:47am, and take another bus to San Franscisco at 10:55am arriving at 11:30am That is only $60

Return is the same price leaving SF at 6:50am and arriving LA at 6:40PM

Look on the bright side, your carbon footprint will be a little less then a car or an airplan, (but not by much) http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/Satellite?c=WSArticlePage&cid=1153323727125&pagename=WhistleStop%2FWSArticlePage%2FBlank_Template

either way sounds romantic, and the practically is off the charts.

Who says you have to do that Emeryville shit? Just take the frackin' train to Oakland (arriving at 10:55) and jump on the BART. Bikes are allowed at that time of day.

That's what I'm going to do. Take a nap on that first redeye motorcoach to Bakersfield, then jump on the train (which has bike racks, no charge) and enjoy the early morning view of the Central Valley. And make it to San Francisco before lunchtime. And that's that.

I figure, given the choice between "try something new and different" and "sit at home and whine and naysay on the Internet," I will generally choo-choo-choose the former. San Francisco Critical Mass, Fifteenth Anniversary. Going!

PC, you have a link that details the restrictions on bringing a bicycle on their buses? My guess is that it's not any better than their restrictions on bringing it on a train. The link states ,
their policy on bikes on trains. I'm betting that by the time you add up the charges for taking the bicycle along, you're over $100 each way.

I still like the idea of taking a few cars up to San Jose, finding a campground that isn't RV friendly and riding the Caltrain the rest of the way to SF. The trip to San Jose is about 360 miles, which makes it doable with just about any mode of four wheels.

I don't really consider the train that much less of a carbon footprint since I'll be getting 35-40 mpg with two other ridazz in the car.

I say lets find a campground that we can take over with a big tribe. Use the Caltrain, which is bike friendly, to get into SF.

If you're taking a thruway bus that connects to a train that allows unboxed bikes, you can put your bike in the luggage compartment of the bus, unboxed. No problem.

For me, the irony of driving 400 miles to ride CM is just too thick, so I'm trainin' it. Nothing in particular to do with the carbon footprint; that's just a bonus. Also, I've never seen the Central Valley from the POV of a train, whereas I've seen Interstate 5 more than enough times. And I like trains, and I'm bored and depressed by freeways. Wanna join me on the train? Cool. Don't wanna? Cool. Do your own thing, and I'll see you there.

Goooooooiiiiinnnnngggg!

Just to clarify: there are no extra charges of any kind for bikes on the San Joaquin train, or on the thruway connector bus that connects to it. So the price (a little over a hundred, round trip) is the total price if you San Joaquin it both ways. In my case, I'm thinking about taking the Coast Starlight back down, just for the hell of it, and the way I book it (after using the V185 promotion code), it will end up costing about eight more bucks (less than the cost of a twelve-pack of beer) for bike boxing and handling. No big deal. Done and done. And fun fun fun!

Fuzz, what I'm going to do is this:

5811 Thruway Bus - 1:25 AM Friday at Union Station, connects to the
711 San Joaquin Train - 4:55 AM at Bakersfield
...arriving at Oakland (OKJ) at 10:55 AM. Jump on the BART or the ferry to SF.

For the trip back:

716 San Joaquin Train - 1:05 PM Sunday at Oakland (OKJ), connects to the
5816 Thruway Bus - 7:05 PM at Bakersfield, arriving at Union Station at 9:50 PM.

You can book this all at once really easily on the web. Just put LAX and OKJ as your stations, and put Sept. 28, 2AM as your Departure Date and September 30, 1PM for your Return Date (I'm assuming you'll want to stay until Sunday morning, like I plan on doing...going right back the next day would be kind of weak). Those thruway buses are "tied" to the trains, so your connections are guaranteed--if the bus arrives a few minutes late, they'll hold the train and vice versa. They usually run on time, though--I checked. The San Joaquin trains have bike racks on them, I think three racks per car. The thruway buses will allow you to put your bike in the underfloor luggage bin. No extra charge.

I've ridden SF to LA twice and LA to SF once; self-supported, along the coast. I can't speak for the inland areas, but I've yet to find any non-RV-only campgrounds between San Francisco and Santa Cruz, let alone San Jose.

There is however, camping in the Marin Headlands--which is just a short ride over the Goga bridge (that's Golden Gate--no need to shave the balls, my bruthas). Not post-ride-pass-out close, but not too far. Still, it's dark as hell out there so it'd be tricky to get there at night.

Hawk Campground [pictured] is fuckin'-a beautiful, but pretty remote considering there's a two-mile ride up a firetrail to get there. But there are three other campgrounds in the area and Haypress sounds like it might be the most easily accessible.

Damn, now I'm starting to think about riding up the coast to go to Mass.

The bus seats 14 people (I think he said). Anyways he said he doesn't want to take more than two bikes. I haven't talked to Gern, about driving as he has a truck and maybe able to haul the bikes. Anyone else with a truck, van or?

The camping I've been working on. Does it suprise anyone that it's much easier to fine a campground that takes RV but no tents, as opposed to taking tents and no RVs?

I'll post in a day or two what I've found on camping.

OK

So heres the camping possibilities that I've come up with,
Presidio , Campgrounds

Sanborn County Park Campground
this is a 13 mile ride from the Caltrain stop in San Jose.
Caltrain map If you're not sure what the Caltrain is, do a wiki search and read up on it.

Joseph D. Grant County Park Campground
this camp site is also about 13 miles from the train station mentioned above, but looks like a hell of climb for most people.

The last one I found and looks the best for using Caltrain is Huddart Park Visit Campground
Is site is about 8 miles from the Redwood station and doesn't look like any kind of serious climb.

That's about all I found. Big Bike Dan mentioned KOA campgrounds but the nearest one is in Petaluma, 34 miles out of SF and who knows what public transportation service is available there.

My first choice would be the presideo but we got to act fast. Second choice would be outside of Redwood City. Third choice is slumming it and have our bag on our bikes. Worst thing that could happen is we camp in Golden Gate Park! Who's for the the third choice?

OK it's been awhile since I last posted on going to SFCM, but I haven't stopped looking on what's out there, honest! I came across a really good site that looks real promising and one that looks like a great way to spend a few days on another trip to SF.

China Camp looks like a great place to stay at if you have a bike, sleeping bag and tent. If you don't have some of these items, look into Home made gear or rent the crap.

What I like about this site is that it's a walk in camping only, close to SF, and showers! I haven't looked into how to get out there. I assume a combo of public transport and bike. This is about the best open campground I've come across. Look it over and voice your opinion and criticism here, on the list.

The other site that would be a bitchen place to camp and do the adventure thing is at Huddart Park This is about 8 miles outside of Redwood City and has three group camping sites. Would be assume to get people from SF and take all three sites over.

I still have to see what public transportation is available out to China Camp. What the group we are putting together is doing is getting out to SF on Thursday and having Friday to see SF and do the ride. More than likely we'll be up all night and go to the campsite Saturday. Thursday night we'll just be winging it and stay where we can. Either that or setting up camp on Thursday, we haven't decided yet. That's pretty much it for now.

There's a truckstop near Oakland where I could stash away the rig.
I could ride down to the BART station and take that to one of the rally points.
But, this is all contigent on forward planning and nothing getting tweaked out of order.
Last thing I want is a false "say-so" from myself, only to end up in the middle of Bum-Fuck, South Dakota for skewered planning reasons.

For those taking a car and just plan on leaving it and taking Caltrain
Free parking at http://www.caltrain.com/caltrain_parking_atherton.html
Atherton Sat Image Tamien may also have free parking if you are taking Caltrain.

The cross streets of where China Camp is is Point San Pedro Road & Biscayne Drive in San Rafael, CA

Good way to plan your trip in SF is via http://511.org/ You may also want to take a look at SFGate traveler guide

Let me know if these sites don't work.

Plan is to take our vehicle(s) to the China Camp on Thursday and setup camp. From there on Friday we'll take a group of people, their bikes and Dan's trailer to the Bart Station in Richmond. Other people will take the bus which is about 3 miles away from the camp grounds. Other still can ride to the start of CM. Look over this site they do have directions if there's a bridge closure. There's even a ferry options for the ones not scared of sharks. Take a look at the 511 site and at the bottom it gives you options.

I have a feeling the links don't work above so here most for now,

No offense but YUK to the /www.socalsvriders.org site. It looks just like every other forum site. Lifeless and sterile. Here at this site I alway have the sense that I may catch some disease here. It has that warm and homely feel to it. Kinda like a nice warm fire in the middle of the winter in a log cabin with a 12 gauge shot gun on my lap just waiting for any excuse to fire it feel to it.

P.J. O'Rourke - That dude is way funny for someone I'm sure. Me, wiki listed that he still uses a IBM Selectric typewriter to do his work on. That's all I need to know! I'll head in the opposite direction for my entertainment!

Camping at SF - Looks we're going to do the Easy Rider route and just go where the wind takes us. Best case scenario is we'll be taken in by some ladazz and get wined and dined and we'll of course have our ways with them. The worst case scenario is we'll be in some homeless shelter. Look for us camping in Golden Gate Park along with 10,000 of our closest bicycling buddies.

The campgrounds I mentioned above, China Camp is filling up fast. I suggest checking it out soon as it looks like it will be filled soon.

Plans currently are to park at a Caltrain station and use caltrain to get into SF. We'll be getting into SF on Thursday.

What about renting a Ryder truck to carry all the bikes, and riding MegaBus to SF? Who would be interested in that? If so, would you want to return Saturday mid-day or Sunday morning?

thinkpeace

I checked on Ryder prices - a 14' truck would only be practical if at least 20 people were going. It would be almost $1000 all together. That includes the rental fee, insurance, milage fee (.59/mile) & gas (10 MPG)

So, probably not too likely as some people may need to return Sat versus Sun, and some want to take the train.

Another possibility is a Uhaul trailer which is $9.95 per day for a 4x4x8 trailer.

No extra charge.>>

Just make absolutely certain that you check to make sure they are accepting bikes at this time.

When I took the amtrak from PDX - SEA and then back to LAX just the other week, I could not have a bike. Something about doing work on the trains that took bikes. I have no idea what the reason was, but I'd call ahead just to make sure that they will take your bike.

There's a difference in policy between the "Amtrak California" trains and the national Amtrak trains with regard to bikes.

The Coast Starlight, which I think is what Brendan took, is a national Amtrak train. Bikes have to be boxed, pedals and handlebars removed, extra charge, blah blah bippety boppity boo.

The San Joaquin is an Amtrak California train and has, like, three bike racks per car and there's no extra charge. I will call Amtrak and make absolutely sure that the bikes can be put on the connecting bus, but I've read their policy and the policy says that they can.

I assume we'll pretty much stay up all night Friday night. Saturday we can play it by ear as far as how to spend the day. Gern, you mentioned something about going across the SF Gate bridge. How bout doing that Saturday in the day time? We can find some cool places to snooze and rest up for Saturday night. I was thinking of bringing a portable BBQ. cured1,

You could also go to a thrift store and find a soft sided luggage bag. A folder should fit into that no problem. I assume you got something with 16 or 20 inch wheels. 26 inch wheels could be a problem.

My (one) experience with SFCM, is it starts really close to ON TIME. I believe it started rolling around 630, but there were so many people there it took a LONG TIME for the ride to actually get going. And if you think the start of MR is slow, oh man. Prepare to just walk your bike for the first mile or so. That was just a regular SF CM.

I say we roll from Zeitgeist at 530, on the dot. I don't know who I'll be with during the day, or where I'll be waking up, but I'm thinking of getting to the bar around 3. Plenty of time to drink a couple pitchers and hang out.

I know a lot of people will be spending the first night (tonight) outside of the city.

Anyone want to meet for Breakfast or Lunch?

I like to have an "idea" of what I'm doing (they never really ever stick).

Marino, thanks for the other ideas.

We invite photographers and pedestrians to take photos of the thousands of terrorists who maskarade as environmental activists as they break the traffic laws throughout downtown San Francisco tomorrow.

If they wanted to be a part of the traffic, that would have been wonderful. But as we've been forced to tolerate for too long, that scum is allowed to tie up the streets, terrorize motorists and tourists, and generally break down any sense of sharing. They take, they have never given back in 15 years.

If they're in the streets when the light turns red for them. Take out a camera and take their pictures, or better yet - don't stop.

Way kick ass weekend ridazz!!!!! Fuckin everything fell into place nicely. This was in spite not knowing where the hell we were going to stay when we get there! The CM ride kicked ass and the whole day/night was sweet. We ended the night, every night actually, the MR way, which was drinking till 3-4am! My head, body and wallet is aching.

SF rocks and rocks hard! Now that is what a big city is suppose to look like! People out on the streets walking, riding and meeting others. Not all in fuckin metal boxes.

Every night we rode was a memorable experience. Oakland was awesome and a great place to go riding. Big thanks to Gern and Dan for letting 4 ridazz to take over their tiny room on Saturday. Yes I owe you guys one.

The Zeitgeist bar was an awesome call. Loved the place even though the cook was an a-hole that needs a new job.

Who's up for going back and camping in the Presideo? In their official campgrounds of course!

Thanks to all that made the trip memorable.

WEEKEND REPORT

Fri

1:25am - Train ride up with PC with a bonus one-hour ride through Bakersfield at 3am.

2:00pm - Ridazz converge at Zeitgeist on Valencia for beers and kielbasa. Graffiti and other antics ensue.

6:00pm - Massers meet at Pee Wee Herman plaza. There are a lot of them.

7:00pm - Ride! Bikes take over the streets. I swear I spent half an hour corking this one intersection. Taking over the broadway tunnel was awesome and loud. Attempted rush up the 101 fwy on-ramp almost gets me arrested. A lot of riding ending with a dance party in the streets.

10:30pm - CM afterparty (Annie's dream) was a surreal experience and included people in masks, accordians, goblins, an indoor swing and a free video on how to stay sexually active over the age of sixty. But I heard that the place to be was Wells Fargo.

1:30am - It's Tops rocked my world for late-night eating with peanut butter chocolate chip pancakes!

Sat

10:00am - Breakfast at St. Francis with Annie, Roadblock and our gracious host, Michael.

12:00pm - Meet some other ridazz at Flipper's and have a few beers at some drag queen bar with the original cast recording of Legally Blonde - The Musical over the stereo. Is he gay or Europpean?

2:00pm - Love Fest! Imagine a couple dozen PA systems -- each playing some different form of dance/rave/house music -- in a downtown city square filled with people. Females outnumber males 3:1 and gay males outnumber straight males 2:1 but be careful because some of those females aren't really females.

4:00pm - Lay in the grass, relax and kick back a few beers in Dolores park. This is where you realize that you are having the perfect weekend. Why aren't there any parks like this in LA?

7:00pm - A nice sushi meal in Oakland before heading to the Midnight Ridazz/East Bay Mice 2%/Fix Without Dix summit ride: The Day After. This ride was awesome and included a tour of West Oakland's industrial area plus a skull skid contest (congrats, PC!). Then a high-speed hustle up to Kay's for sexy's b-day cake-throwing party and some rambunctious chanting in the street.

12:00am - Catch the last train out of Oakland back to the city. Should we hit Stud, SF's premier gay club? Or should we check out some of the Love Fest afterparties? Nah... let's get some more peanut butter chocolate chip pancakes from It's Tops!

Sun

9:00am - Cats kept me up all night. Alergies ensue.

10:00am - Breakfast at Weird Fish. Chocolate chip banana bread rocks my world.

12:00pm - Tour of some of the murals in The Mission, including Clarion Alley.

2:00pm - Ridazz meet at the Palace Of Fine Arts for the Pretty Scenery & Heavy Artillery ride across the Golden Gate and into Marin County. The ride across the bridge was glorious. Due to time constraints, no one could join me for the ride through the National Recreation Area so I went on solo and it was beautiful. Abandoned army tunnels, bunkers, forts and gun turrets plus some of the most beautiful landscape on the California Coast.

6:30pm - Run into Nicole, B-Rad, Mike, SKIDMARCUS, spiraldemon and dak on the way back over the Golden Gate. We go meet up with Richie at the base of the Lombard St. Hill and intense climbing ensues.

8:30pm - Cheesesteaks in North Beach before making it back to Oakland to hop in the car and head to LA. Glad I don't have to spend the night in the Oakland Amtrak station.

3:30am - Arrive in LA safely thanks to Mike and B-Rad.

Thanks to everyone for a great trip and a bitchin' weekend!

I love you all!

.K

Man, this was a fun weekend.
Next time, I gotta stay in SF, get to see the city...
Big props to Jared's bud (and his buddy Daniel) for putting us up all weekend.

I must say, for me, the bestest part of the weekend was the full on sprint out of the port... that shit was a blast.

I need to go back to SF, I'd never been there before ,and really didnt get to see much of the city... I wanna go for like a week sometime or something.
