LA BIKE SUMMIT 2009
Saturday March 7th!!!

The growth and interest in bike riding and bike advocacy has increased.
The Los Angeles Bike Summit is the next step to facilitate a discussion and collaboration of bike organizations, support groups, and advocates.

WHEN: March 7, 2009 9 am to 4 pm
WHERE: Los Angeles Trade-Tech College
400 W. Washington Blvd Los Angeles, CA 90015
COST: FREE

Bike Summit is a day-long meeting for all kinds of Southern California bicyclists to come together and exchange ideas. Guest speakers from New York City, Mexico City and Portland will share their successes. Panels and workshops will introduce bicyclists to ways you can get involved and make our communities safe and convenient for bicycling. Meet cyclists, learn about bike facilities, community organizing, transportation funding, and get actively involved in making LA a more live-able and bike-able city!

Need workshops on how to duct tape and tie down local politicians and force them to watch pro-bike materials until they love us, Clockwork Orange-style. Also, how to create reusable sharrow stencils and mixing waterproof paint in-house.

re: This looks boring

Well, you might trying poopooing in your cunt a bit more then. That ought to fix things.

The whole point is to bring together all the hard working, boring, people who can affect positive change to make a LA a better city for bicycling.

More vids to follow.

After all, the non-boring people get together every night of the wek and party hard to make LA more bike friendly. They are clearly doing their part.

We need some of the boring types and shut-ins who turn the gears of power to get in on this stuff too.

There was a lot of people at the bike summit. I would say it was a success. Next year will be even bigger I'm sure and tell you the truth I think it will help get people thinking politically _ dare I say might even get some fucking paint on the streets.

I don't know about a summit, but maybe we could have a Ridazz salon one of these days? You know...gather at somebody's house at an appointed time, have drinks, have a few more drinks, and (this is the different part) talk informally about ideas? Make it a recurring thing. Eh? Eh? Who's with me?

PC

...I mean, the part about ideas would scare the douchey people away. And there would still be drinks. Are you following me here? Eh? Eh?

Veronica did such a thing a couple of weeks ago at the Bike Oven.
The plan was to make conversation and then make the ideas come into action. The conversation ended up being dominated by some girl who had all this experience with city hall. Then she left before we went to work on our humble plan.

We made home made signs inspiring people to slow down that where to be posted in Josef's neighborhood. I don't know if they where every posted

Oh...yeah, I know about that, but that's more of a "let's get together and plan activism and change the world" thing--NTTAWWT. I said "salon' because I was thinking (admittedly in a fuzzy way) of a recurring event where we could talk about ideas, as distinct from people, things, or events. Did I mention there would be drinks? I dunno, man, I'm just throwing it out there.

The reason I said "summit" was that I was thinking it would be great for interested folks to get together and discuss the future of social riding.

Lots of things are different than when MR captured the public imagination a few years back, and I think it would be great to take some time to sit down with people and flesh out some ideas.

I can't wait for the next Salton Sea, I hope I can go.
I think a reoccurring salon would be great.

I just feel like would be great to have a meeting that is local, accessible and can accommodate a big group of people to discuss the future of social cycling. Maybe with some smaller breakout groups to focus on sharing info about narrower concerns.

Biketopia, Urban Design Model

It was an awesome event, filled my head with ideas and inspiration. I'll be writing more of what I got of it in the coming weeks on my blog. This also inspired me to start preparing a design document to illustrate a particularly bad intersection at Franklin and Argyle in Hollywood, and will send it to LaBonge's office and publish it publicly.

I also second the idea of a recurring summit or salon, I think it would be good if we had the annual big bike summit, but then smaller gatherings spread through out the year to get all the political actvisty people together for brain juice flowing.

I'm glad I made this event. I just wished I would have gotten there at the beginning and I could have seen some of the lectures that missed. Picking the one you want to see while missing 7 others really suck! As it was, I enjoyed what I caught.

I was most impressed with Ryan Snyder.. Any chance you get, this guy is worth listeing to.
