OH HAI, WELCOME TO OJAI

Hume, is this a friend of yours?

P.S. If this has been talked about before, consider this post an "update."

EARTH FRIEND JEN!
my first encounter with her was when i was trackstanding at a light downtown. she was across the street doing the same thing wearing short shorts and her pasties. i thought "oh wow, another fixed rider in ojai" but when the light turned green and she started riding towards me i noticed that she was towing a trailer on a mtn bike in the lowest gear ever. she was spinning her legs like a crazy person and for whatever reason would not upshift.

apparently she moved to ojai specifically to protest.

they said Naysayer in the article.

The article also said that she is moving too fast in town. That different story then the gearing you said she was in. Unless she can get going that quick in those granny gear.

If she makes her way back to LA for a visit, I want to have a SpokeNDissent ride featuring the Pastie Lady! If she moves to LA, maybe we can have six regular spolendissent riders, instead of five.

the cops pulled her over one day and were giving her the 3rd degree, asking her why she was riding around with very little on. they kept asking her if she was on drugs, what types of drugs she was on, who sold them, etc etc. she kept saying she was straight. after 30 minutes or so they let her go and told her to wear a shirt. so she put on a t shirt and rode to the other side of town where she took it off and continued to do her own thing.

i'm glad I saw this post.
The talk about the crystals and the fact that our body is made up mostly of water, was featured in the movie "What the Bleep" It showed in the movie, how water crystals either thrived or look really awful depending on the thoughts that where around them. Since are body is mostly water, the premise is that our body reacts the same way by the thoughts that are around us. I wonder how she works with the attention that she attracts while trying to share the message of the truth that she knows.

I'm not surprised some of you are scared of a women who knows some truth and is not afraid to share it with others It takes a strong women not to be ashamed of her body in the society that try to brainwash us that there is something wrong with the human body and it not proper not if it is not covered, in toxic material at that. Another little lesson to make us ashamed of ourselves instead of being empowered by what great sparks of the divinity that we are

I'm thankful for the work she does. Just another reminder to keep it positive, and we will all be better off.

"I'm not surprised some of you are scared of a women who knows some truth"

It's not that. I appreciate that this lady is trying to do good work, and that's great. I support her art, cycling, etc. That's great.

Thing is though, when people start talking about crystals, it becomes immediately apparent that they are not part of the reality-based community. If somebody wants to present a call to action by making appeals to nonexistent entities or supposed phenomena for which no evidence exists or is likely to exist, this is generally going to fail to get the support of rational people.

Truth is subjective in this case. Crystals picking up on emotional states makes about as much sense as astrology, child sacrifice, and fear of Zeus.

I'm not gonna live my life like that. If someone else wants to, they can feel free, but they're gonna have a hard time convincing people to do the same.

Also, she seems Really Crazy in the possibly needing medication sense.

I hope it is understood the difference between science and religion,
aka fact and belief. Science is something that can be proved, something that happens in a certain situation that can be created and re-created in the same manner under the same conditions over and over again. Religion is belief in something that can not be proved but someone has a real strong feeling that something is a certain way, even though they can't prove they feel that it is fact, that is religion, that is belief, that is faith.

What is being talked about is studying water under microscopic conditions and seeing what becomes of water when certain act happen around them. Positive thought have produced water crystals that look healthy, vibrant looking. Negative thought have produced microscopic water crystal that look like they are in decay.
These studies have actually been accomplished and documented.

Our bodies are made up of 70% water. The thesis therefore concludes that if the thoughts affect the water crystals in a certain way, that being our body is made up of 70% water it may affect our bodies the same way.

Now these studies have not been concluded to my knowledge on the human body to see the effects of thoughts on them. I do know from experience and think most will agree from your own personal experience, that people with positive thoughts will make you feel more vibrant, more happy and more healthy. Where people with negative thoughts will bring you down, make your tired, and want to retreat the area.

When a person does something against there own self interest, I would think that people would think that the person is not mentally healthy. By choosing to embrace positive thoughts and rejecting clothing that have been treated with chemicals designed to kill the respiratory system of living animal is far from crazy, it is actually life substantiating to one self and the eco-system around them.

I respect what Earth Friend Jen is doing (for the most part), but the ice crystals stuff is just ridiculous.

The "experiments" appear to be done by one guy, who is (intentionally or unintentionally) cherry-picking the results to fit his preconceptions. If he had done these experiments "blind," that is, without knowing what kind of treatment the water had recieved, and if he chose to present a large random sample of the resulting crystals rather than just presenting one picture as the definitive result for each treatment, then this might be "science." As it is now, it falls somewhere in between "junk" and "superstition."

A while back, I saw some of the bottled water that Emoto puts his stamp on selling for 3 bucks a pop in some health food store (it's only $35/case if you order direct!). I don't think this guy is necessarily doing this crystal business as some kind of cynical capitalist ploy to sell more books and water. He may believe everything he says, but his methods are about as scientific as looking at the clouds trying to find bunny shapes.

Nobody, so far as I can tell, has reproduced Emoto's results under controlled conditions. Seriously, though, does anyone need "science" like this just to prove that happy people make others happy? You don't need some kind of exotic quantum mechanical babble about emotional vibrations in order to explain that.

Anyway, ride on Earth Friend Jen!

OK I'm not into crystals and all the new age stuff. I get highly suspicious how they always find some new way to monetize their "discoveries".

But for the same reason I get suspicious of what passes as mainstream science and "medicine" these days. Most science is payola from some big corporation with it's own interests.

Blind studies my ass. Blind to anything that the funders may find competing with their claims!

marino -
"Blind studies my ass. Blind to anything that the funders may find competing with their claims!"

Me -
That doesn't make any sense at all my hairy-backed friend. The science that the academic society and all of the scientific community accepts as a common standard is the "scientific method".

Scientific method refers to the body of techniques for investigating phenomena, acquiring new knowledge, or correcting and integrating previous knowledge. It is based on gathering observable, empirical and measurable evidence subject to specific principles of reasoning. A scientific method consists of the collection of data through observation and experimentation, and the formulation and testing of hypotheses.

Among other facets shared by the various fields of inquiry is the conviction that the process must be objective to reduce a biased interpretation of the results. Another basic expectation is to document, archive and share all data and methodology so it is available for careful scrutiny by other scientists, thereby allowing other researchers the opportunity to verify results by attempting to reproduce them. This practice, called full disclosure, also allows statistical measures of the reliability of these data to be established.

Your crystal mumbo jumbo fails on just about every point above. With or without funding, the standards are followed regardless. Really the only thing someone has for the supporting evindience is that it feels good. Unfortunately or fortunately, whichever way you want to look at it, it fails the scientific scrutiny.

Follow science, not superstition!

re: sign @ marino
I'm the negative sign, matey ;-)

But seriously, I actually will agree with you that corporate payola anything is crap, and that goes just as well for corporate payola pseudo-science, as well as faux-independent think tanks, and christian "universities" that push bullshit like "intelligent design".

But the real deal is good stuff. Properly peer-reviewed, academically driven, experimentally verifiable science provides us with the most accurate view of the world and the universe that we can get, and it's getting better all the time.

More importantly, it gets us fancy bike parts. You will never get fancy bike part designs from astrologists.

ephemerae

@User1
I think Marino's point about monied interests swaying scientific results is valid, whether or not it applies in this case. Hardly a day goes by without the pharmaceutical industry taking another beating for dodgy trials and obfuscation of results that run contrary to the bottom line. But far from casting doubt on the scientific method, I think incidents like these just strengthen the case for more rigorous analyses and better transparency in the trials process - i.e. more science, not less. There are hucksters with crystals and hucksters with pills, and it's science's job to make sure that their biased "research" doesn't get taken as fact.

Also, if you're going to do a Wikipedia cut'n'paste, at least source it. Another hallmark of good scientific research is giving credit where credit is due.

As for astrology... Year of the Horse. I say down with this Greco-Romo-Mesopotamian hegemony - I'll have none of that Western mumbo jumbo dictating my fate, thankyouverymuch!

What were we talking about, again? Bikes or something? Will science let me get my fancy bike parts covered in crystals?

nathansnider
04.28.08 - 3:04 am

Well yeah, I figured that people would be able to find the reference to the scientific method on Wiki on their own, hence the absence of a reference.

I never actually disputed that science doesn't follow the $$$. Sadly this more true today than ever before. A great example to that is NASA now receives it funding via the Pentagon. And we all know where the research will be concentrated on now, yeah?

James Randi, founder of the James Randi Educational Foundation, has publicly offered Emoto one million dollars if his results can be reproduced in a double-blind study. Randi has also stated that he does not expect to ever have to pay the million dollars.

Me -
The rest of the reference is not too flattering either.

Look what you did mofos! Earth friend Jen moved to Ashland, Ore.

Ashland Ore is about as similar to Ojai as you can get. A former hippy town overran by rich new age assholes.

It was Asland Ore where the police last year kicked out the Sprockettes for dancing without a permit.

Good luck Earth Friend Jen. We'll miss you!

Ojai's Pastie Lady leaves town
After a year of biking downtown in pasties and a G-string, Jennifer Moss moves to Oregon, saying that she is tired of police harassment and that the town isn't environmentally conscious enough.

After a year of near-naked environmental activism in Ojai, the Pastie Lady has decided to hit the road for greener pastures.

Jennifer Moss, 32, caused community strife and gained local celebrity for the bike rides she took daily through the center of town, clad only in a hemp G-string and pasties.

But last week, she said she'd grown tired of police harassment in the Ventura County city of 8,000, and moved to Ashland, Ore.

She said the Ojai area was not the environmental Shangri-La she envisioned when she arrived a year ago. People use pesticides on crops, she said, and herbicides to get rid of bamboo on the Ventura River.

"Police attention was part of the reason I left," she said. "But the No. 1 reason I left Ojai is they are not conscious enough about the air, the soil and the water. Either you get it or you don't."

Moss, who calls herself "Earth Friend Jen," had touted various environmental causes during her streaks through downtown. She's passionate about water and thinks everyone should wear clothes made of hemp.

But she'd been ticketed for traffic violations several times and had twice been cited for public indecency. The Ventura County district attorney's office declined to prosecute either case, said Bruce Norris, Ojai's police chief.

"They just don't believe they can get a conviction on the nudity issue," Norris said. "There are constitutional issues about why a man can run around with no shirt on but a woman can't."

Moss said she was always within the law because her skimpy outfit covered key areas. In Ashland, she said, she will no longer have to worry.

The city's laws do not prohibit public nudity, which she recently confirmed during a visit to the local police station. Moss said she celebrated by stripping off all of her clothes and doing a headstand right outside the station. Then she rode naked through the center of Ashland, even though it was chilly out.

"This town is known for performance art. And even though it's not the status quo to ride around naked, it's been done before," Moss said. "So it was no big deal."

As word leaked out in Ojai about Moss' departure, almost everyone had an opinion.

"Good riddance!" one anonymous poster wrote on a local news website.

"I think it's terrible she's been driven out of town," wrote another.

For the police chief, her move will have one concrete benefit: Police will no longer have to waste time responding to complaints.

"I hope she finds real happiness up there," Norris said.

"... towing a trailer on a mtn bike in the lowest gear ever. she was spinning her legs like a crazy person and for whatever reason would not upshift. "

This is the funniest thing I've read all day! And then clicking on the link to see her throwing the peace sign up with the little pasties was priceless.
