Acura LA Marathon 2008
Thread started by dl1245 at 01.3.08 - 11:38 pm

Whatsup everyone..
Could only find the thread for last years LA Tour and was wondering if you are going to this years ride. There's only information on last years ride, so I would like to know if anyone is going this year and what their thoughts are on the '07 ride. Let me know if we could get a MR team going.

reply

Ill probably go if i'm not dead by march.

When is the date ? Can you post more info on it.
I did the Pill Ride and part of the route prior to the actual Marathon last year ......it was groovy.

^ +1.

Last year there was a bunch of baloney where people were making a bunch of crappy arguments as to why you should pay the fee, and heated arguments ensued. Let's avoid that this year, yeah? Everybody crash it, OK?

K thx bye.

Whatever argument you wanna make about registering vs. not is fine with me, I can almost see both sides from here, but the real turn-off to registering is having to go to that feckin' "Quaity of Shit Expo" at the Convention Center to pick up your bib and bag of crap that you don't want anyway.

Yeah, so I made a fake bib and crashed it last year.

There's no reason to debate this - if you want to raise money AND ride the event, ride for an organization like Team Parkinson, MS Society (not Microsoft, multiple sclerosis), etc.

If you're not into doing charity, crash the ride. No need to discuss any further.

And wasn't it the number 666? Hilarrie.

Shall we have a fake number making party?

(Speaking of fake numbers, this is a little off topic, but I keep meaning to do this for Rosarito - Ensenada, but each year I forget and wind up getting chased around by security.)

Step 1: Steal image of bib from Agent Orange's blog.

Step 2: Photoshop(tm) in desired number and clever saying.

Step 3: Print bib image in guesstimated size.

Step 4: Glue to Tyvek(tm) backing (used FedEx(tm) envelope).

Step 5: Pin to backpack or clothing.

Step 6: Ride in the Akura(tm) Bike Tour like you belong!

Just so everybody is clear on this: NOBODY is checking for bibs, and in a crowd of approximately 10,928,481,293,147,182 there's nothing they could do anyway.

Make funny phony (phony funny) bibs if you want, of course. I'm just saying, for the sake of anybody who didn't know, that there's no reason to sweat it.

PC

PC is undoubtedly correct. Making a fake bib was something I did for amusement - a little dadaist art project - rather than an actual attempt to fool anybody.

mr rollers
02.9.08 - 11:44 pm

PC is right on. What are they going to do, tackle you because you don't have a number?
The only two places where they may have any control are the start and finish lines. Its easy to join in a block or two beyond the start line, and turn off (if necessary) just before they channel the finishers to the refreshment tables at the end.

And they won't try anything like this with a bike.
This happened at the 1967 Boston marathon.
Women were not allowed to run back then, and this woman got a number by entering using only her first initial.
There's a word for people like her and us. Race organizers call us "pirates".
Arrrgh.

Yeah, she finished the race.

When I rode the marathon route, I didn't even know you were supposed to register for it. I just showed up at 5 a.m. and followed the lame-o people in spandex.

THE LOS ANGELOPES
should be at USC around 2:30am more or less.

We should meet on the Southwest corner of the campus like last year. That worked out well. We can just go where the wind takes us. Man, the group photo is classic..

Sexy and I crashed the ride two years ago, with no fake bibs, and with large political signs and flags designed to attract attention. We had no problems. I didn't crash it last year but I'm thinking 3am is too late. Security and cops if they by chance wanted to start shit with us will be somewhat in place at 3-4am.

I think 1am or 1:30 at the latest should be the start time.

any thoughts?

I dont think the cops will be a problem. We just need to figure out when the roads will actually start closing. I think thats why 3 am is a good time to start, we will know when they start to shut down the streets.
A buddy of mine works for the D.O.T. I am going to ask if he has any info on when they will be closing down the streets.

LA CACOPHONY MARATHON REST STOP- RECAP

It was short, but sweet. The runners went through well over 4 dozen
donuts and almost a 30 case of Tecate in 2 hours.

This was my first time. At first, I didn't quite understand the
concept, but after seeing the expressions on the runner's faces as we dangled Glazed Donuts and Frosty Beer in front of them, it all became perfectly clear how this is an annual tradition.

We were interviewed by some reporter of the LA Times, and later we
were interrupted by some rookie cops for handing out closed container beers to adults only... Overall, I would say it turned out well.

I enjoyed hanging PC who showed and participated, there were 8 others as well!

thanks for allowing me to vandalize you faces: user1, bbdan, stephen box, ms. stephanie, the usc marching band, and random cyclists. the officer who threatened to ticket us for consenting face vandalization was un-fucking-awesome. :p

me and two other people went to mcdonalds over on 39th and fig to get some sustenance before the actual ride. we wanted to wait a few minutes and let everyone else leave before we did. i think we started rolling around 6:30 or so. it was easy to spot spook on the tallbike in the crowd. so i start zipping through everyone and i keep hearing people call my name out. annie was yelling at me, then eddie started yelling at me, and then my friend andys parents who came out all the way from phoenix to do it started yelling at me. i thought jeff went caucasian and grew boobs because they both told me to get a haircut.

The section on us reads:

"Members of the Los Angeles Cacophony Society dangled doughnuts on fishing poles and offered cans of beer to the runners. "We're giving people what they want," said Joe Borfo. The society, which has been attending the marathon for a decade, has previously offered fried chicken, poetry readings and lap dances."
