Same ish I've been saying for the past 10 years.

To quit smoking and to lose weight.

I've quit smoking on 2/06 and got back into it this past October. I didn't smoke today.

On the losing weight... I want to start riding to work again. Maybe 2x a week. Then increase it.

I hate having the same resolution every year.

I was supposed to stop drinking coffee. I already relapsed. I guess I want to be more creative. I never really paid much attention to my sets of crayons and color pencils because I never thought I made anything good. I just decided to make stuff now because it's in my head and it needs to come out, even if it isn't the next thing in the MOCA. LOL

Hey Al,

Sorry to hear about your relapse. I would like to share with you and everyone else my tips to quit smoking. It's what helped me to quit, hopefully it will for you too. I have stopped for well over 10 years now and I used to smoke a pack a day like clock work.

First of all I never bothered to mark the day I quit since it was for the rest of my life. Why count the days/ weeks/ years? So I can pat myself on the back cause I quit X number of years? Only to end up smoking again? It's better to don't think about it since it's going to be for the rest of your life. I say 10 years above, it well over that, I just don't sit down and figure it out. It's not important to me.

Another thing you want to avoid is stopping and starting. Makes it harder to quit for good. That is your goal right?

When you do truly decide to quit, change the brand of cigs you smoke. Buy the nastiest smokes you can find. Smoking those will help you prepare for quiting.

Remember it gets easier to stay away from cigs the longer you're away from them. The hardest for me was the first month.

I never used all those aids they market. I resolved to take responsibility for quiting upon myself. If I used some aids, I could have easily blamed the aids instead of myself. I wanted to avoid this.

The other tips are more common and you probably know them. Avoid friends that smoke, avoid spicy food, avoid things that you like with your cigs, beer, drinks, etc.

The method I used above worked for me, hopefully you can put them to good use. Now if I can figure out how to lose 50 pounds!

Good luck!

Oh yeah! Resolutions are a bunch of crap too IMHO. Why wait for one day out of the year? Work on changing for the better every day. I haven't done a new years resolution since making my new years resolution to never do new years resolutions again! Doing pretty well too!

I have 3 new years resolutions:

1.) Stay more current on the MidnightRidazz Forum.
2.) Start living my life according to the evermost holy, Rev. 106
3.) Tell City Hobgoblin I love him when he starts to lash out

I like to make resolutions on my b-day, it makes sense to me cuz it's like, MY new year... Anyway, it's now the 2nd and I have some resolutions I feel like making anyway, they are: consume less, keep having as much fun as did in the last few months, listen to more music all the time, be more receptive to everything and finally, I resolve to harness the crazy ideas that bounce around inside my skull and do them justice.

My last year New Year's Resolution was to stop making resolutions.

Also, I quit smoking sometime in June by reading "The Easy Way to Stop Smoking" by Allen Carr. The premise is, in short, to continue smoking while you read the book so that when you finish the book, you are certain that you've quit. I have (and will contuinue to) recommend this to anyone who is tired of smoking.

As for me, I've never looked back, never had difficult withdrawals, and don't miss it. However, I did pick up a nasty Funderstorm habit.

@Rev106

Through all of recorded history people have used ritual and and ritualized days in order to foster certain societial functions:

*reuniting families
*making one individual person the center of positive attention
*marking the passage to adulthood, or masquerading and partying to get outside of ones self
*or to mark a date where one lets go of old things and makes room for new things.

Sure as individuals we should strive for positive personal change throughout the year. But if practicing the ritual of the new year's resolution if effective for people and makes them happy ... then yeah you are right: its totally gay (especially if we express our happiness through colorful festivness).

My resolution is to be more cheezy.

"I'm resolved to play more D&D and start doing illegal soap box racing." Bofro

Yes! wait, I already do those things.

New years resolutions are for the weak. Waiting for some random day (the callendar has changed many many times over the years) to resolve change won't make you change. Now, what if you're Chinese? I see only negative from this end of year crap, because the idea now is that you make a resolution but don't keep it. Failure is acceptable in this fourm, thus my distain for it. Now, if it worked that would be noteworthy.

Nothing wrong with failing. It's failing that makes you better at things. If you don't fail from time to time, then you're not trying hard enough.

How come bikers have scars all over their arms and legs, even faces? Because they failed, really hard, a few times. Because they tried, really hard, lots of times. Pushing yourself beyond the limits of what you think is possible = great success or epic failure. FAIL HARDER.

Maybe that'll be my goal for 2008.

January 1st is not a "random day" it is a chosen day that occurs annually.
A random day could be any day of the year picked by some form of random number generator (see below) and that day would change every year.

January 1st is also not an "arbitrary day", it is chosen specifically to coincide with the first day of the western calendar. There is a symbolic reason for this. The last day of the year represents "the old" the first day of the year represents "the new". Clearly new year's resolution makers choose to harness the symbolic meaning of "new and old" to assist them making distinct personal changes. Perhaps the desire to use ritualistic assistance to achieve goals can be noted as a "weakness".

Why not be a rebel, a maverick? Show the world your disdain for collectivism, ritual, and cultural tradition by using this random number generator (if it works) to pick a RANDOM day to start working toward that positive personal change you have been wanting. That would be the action of a STRONG, independent, individual.
