I'm still thinking about watching them climb Balsom Canyon, outside Santa Paula on Saturday.
I'm conflicted by the Dark Century that night, but I've been following the race online and am getting stoaked about showing up and ringing my cow bell.
It's a 90 mile drive to get up there, but I'm still thinking about it.

Best thing about the Tour of CA is Rock Racing. I was sort of aware of their nonsense before, but then I saw it with my own eyes at the prologue in Palo Alto. Escalades and Bentleys for support vehicles, hired tits and ass girls to photo-op with the racers, absurd dayglo logos plastered over everything, and a tantrum-prone, narcissistic team owner with "Big Daddy" embroidered on his jacket.

Loudest most obnoxious team ever. Love it.

Yeah, their roster definitely kicks ass and it's always nice to have new money in cycling.

But...

Now, if they formed their schtick around the esthetic of the Museum of Modern Fun, then you might get me excited.

Mill Creek Summit is at 5000ft, I think the most direct route is up Big Tujunga to Angeles Forest Hwy and up Angeles Forest. Hell, if the storm is still here it could snow on them.

I'll be in Torrance until Sunday morn so don't think I'll be able to ride up there in time. I was planning on coming home to Burbank Sun morning and then continuing up there in my car. I haven't nailed this down yet as I have some friends coming up from southern OC and they were planning on just going directly to the Rose Bowl.

BTW, City Hobgoblin...you said Dude, maybe you should stick to golf or science or something for boring lame people.

Boy, THAT'S ENOUGH OF YOUR LIP! Now, I grant you golf is indeed some seriously boring and lame shit. But science is SERIOUSLY FUCKING SEXY. Some of the sexiest people I know are hardcore brainiac scientists. All the intelligence just makes the sexiness even more sexy.

Science of course makes it possible to do crazy shit in space (astronomy, physics, chemistry, cosmology) and build awesome bicycles (materials science, mechanical engineering, metallurgy, nanotechnology). If it wasn't for science we'd be a bunch of peasants digging in peat bogs hoping our local inquisition branch doesn't kill us next for being a witch or some stupid shit like that. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

This is a bit convoluted in the logic but if you've ever done any drugs it will make sense.

Rock Racing deserves to be and should be supported by cyclists. Not ostracized from the PRO ranks.

Why?

Take one look at the "fashions" that Rock and Republic creates. $250 jeans that are considered the Cat's Pajama's in Orange County aren't made for you, me, or the other guy.

They're made for people who think Hummers are cool.

If Michael Ball's cycling team can get their monster truck driving customer base to think cycling is cool, then those wealthy rednecks might just be a little nicer to cyclists they encounter on the road.

If Rock Racing gets chased away, woe to those in spandex.

Rock Racing has it's place in cycling. While I might not agree with how Michael Ball delivers his message, some of it makes perfect sense. Rock Racing is trying to be the 'bad boy' of cycling and with that attitude they will ruffle some feathers. But ultimately there'll will be some good that will come out of it. But for now, the money and sponsors RR brings in give the pro peloton a boost that it needs.

As for the Rock racers themselves, none of the ones that raced the ToC are suspected of implicated in any current doping scandals. Hamilyon, Botero and Pena did not race because the reopening of the Puerto scandal.

Lastly, how can anyone hate on Cipo? The man is 41 years old and can kick any of our asses after being retired for 3 years.

I don't see how that can be bad. A cyclist is a cyclist, that moron that you refer to is one of us. It does not matter how often he/she rides he/she still rides. When he/she gets into that SUV, he/she is more likely to watch out for fellow cyclists.

And why does the cost of the bike and kit even matter? When was there a pricepoint for legitimacy. The price we spend our bikes is determined by how much we can spare. I, for one, will spend as much on a bike as my budget will allow. As for a kit I will also buy the best I can afford.

From your descriptions, a 'true roadie' is a 'fred'. It is almost as bad as saying all Ridazz are fixie hipters.

Do you have a "He Who Dies with the Most Toys Wins" bumper sticker??? I'll bet you do.

Flaunting $5000 bikes and lycra to make one look like their favorite doper reduces the appeal to others of getting on a bike. If one is training to race, fine, but for the most part street clothes and just about any bike will do 99% of riders just fine. Just look at Midnight Ridazz and related groups, many people in cars get excited when they see us. When was the last time you were on a training ride and someone got curious about what you were doing? I'd venture it's never happened. In my 10 years of racing not a single person was curious about what I was doing or where I was going.

Buying $5000 bikes and team kit sends the development of bikes and parts in the wrong direction for 99% of possible riders. From previous posts you know my opinion on the crap that is sold today. I was a biketech geek for longer than the years that I raced but after a while of being away from the racing scene I started realizing that all that shit is unnecessary, a waste of money, unreliable, hard to fix, etc, etc, etc, if I just want to RIDE MY BIKE.

Thanks RBI,

I remember that thread. I guess it is something I've been noticing a lot lately, that we are think that as Ridazz we are more special that any other cycling group out there. That we alone are the keepers and the champions of cycling. This really bugs me.

Yesterday, I witnessed something pretty remarkable. There was a crit in Ontario. As a support person for our Junior team, I had to be there at 5:30am. Since it was raining hard and very cold, I expected no one to be there. But when I got there there were a few parents and kids already there. When it came to start time, the were almost 50 kids racing. For most of them, the race was an opportunity to ride and it did not matter if it rained.

You see the common thread that runs through all cyclists is the passion to ride.

"A cyclist is a cyclist, that moron that you refer to is one of us. It does not matter how often he/she rides he/she still rides. When he/she gets into that SUV, he/she is more likely to watch out for fellow cyclists."

It all depends on why you ride, doesn't it? I ride with MR and Tren Way, et al, because a lot of the riders look at the world in a different way, don't accept social / economic / political norms at face value and challenge the world around them. Even the existence of the rides is a political message (see the quote from Marino's page, which I will paste at the end of this thread).

Just because the Rock Racers ride bikes doesn't mean I will ever give them my respect. Hiring models as T&A accessories, driving obnoxious SUVs - fuck that, and fuck them.

Quote from Marino's page:
"Fuck politics!
Fuck appeals to the authorities for more lenient terms of enslavement!
We are forging a new society, right now!
Every Midnight Ridazz ride, every Trenway ride, every Sins and Sprockets ride, every C.R.A.N.K. MOB ride is a political ride.
Why? Because it's a public demonstration of collective happiness without consumerism, without structure, without hierarchies. It's a demonstration that anarchy is possible AND fun. "

@ toweliesbong,

I understand where you stand and what you are saying but you are missing my point. My point is: as cyclists we come from very diverse backgrounds, it does not matter how and why we ride just as long as we ride. As a whole wouldn't you agree that if more people rode then it will be better?

I don't care if it was Rock Racing and the Cadillac CTS chase car that inspired some one to ride long as they rode. I truly believe that we can talk all we want about the benefits/challenges of cycling, but that won't compare to someone getting on a bike once and actually experiencing it firsthand.

"In what universe does a route map not apply structure and since when did pit stops at 7-11's to buy stuff not count as consumerism? Not to mention "ride leaders" not being part of any hierarchy?"

This is one of those asides that distracts from the overall conversation rather than adds to it, but I'll bite. I can't help it.

Route maps:
A route map does not provide a lot of structure. If that's the most restricting example of structure, then I'll take it! Not to mention the fact that a lot of the smaller rides - tren way, for example - tend not to use route maps. The rides are organic, and people suggest ideas, and take turns leading people through areas of the city they like. Additionally, it is a question of safety to map out routes ahead of time for large rides. The maps are self-imposed structure that enhance the safety and fun of our rides. We're taking care of each other.

7-11 stops:
Touche, but only to a very limited extent. We are forced to live in the society as in a lot of ways. What are we going to do, make beer in our bathtubs? Buthtub gin ride to pass!

Ride leaders:
This was just not a well thought-out argument. Ride leaders are much like route maps - they help with safety and with the fun and success of a ride. Plus, they change all the time - anyone can lead a ride. Come up with a good idea and post it. They will come.

But, anyways. All that being said - my main point was distilled nicely and stated more calmly by City Hobgoblin: Just because it's on a bike, doesn't mean I have to support it.

I concur that the roadie hate is misplaced. Sure there are some dudes that buy 4K bikes and only use them twice a week. There are also those who passionately ride when ever they can, enjoy the excitement of a race, and wear lycra when they ride. I think every kind of cyclist is important to the community at large, and every kind of group will have it's ass holes of various kinds, Midnight Ridazz included.

Also, most plain clothes cyclists wear lycra underneath for anything long in distance or high intensity, because that shit is practical. So why be hating on those who wear it on the outside.

I saved & invested in a carbon frame bike because at the time I knew my passion for biking was growing exponentially, and I could sense I might have the potential to race competitively. Something I have just recently started doing.

I'm now glad I made that investment, and I get to push my bike to the speed and intensity it was designed for. It doesn't have the greatest components, but I will likely upgrade some of them in the future. If that makes me worthy of your hate, then bring the lynch mob, and I'll tell them to fuck off and just ride yo damn bikes.

I'm not suggesting we all hold hands and support anything or anyone on two wheels, I'm just saying hatin on a large group of people who ride a certain way that's different then you, is not useful energy spent.

I'm not saying that I think all Ridazz have the same perspective. I'm just saying that the reason why someone rides is going to heavily influence whether or not they support something like Rock Racers. I ride because I love it, because the people I have met riding are amazing people, and because it is a context that I feel challenges social norms - the very social norms that the rock racers glorify.

"Why you ride doesn't matter cause once you've ridden, you are more likely to understand riders cause."

That might be true, and I accept that. But I can still talk trash about their gender politics and the elitism they embody, and say that I while I fully acknowledge that MR isn't the only group of cyclists out there, I sure as hell do think think that as Ridazz "we are more special that any other cycling group out there."

thanks SC-NofOC

Your post 's are the type of bitch slap we all need every now and then. I think as a group that prefers to participate in rides like MR, are looking for is a different type of ride, then what is considered a roadie type ride. There might be Roadies that participate in MR, but it is a whole different type of ride.

Roadies are serious about the athletics of the sport, so they spend the extra money on the bike and the equipment. It true we spend what we can afford. The type of riding we do, would not only require a $5000 bike, also, it would not be the wisest decision to take that bike out on a MR ride. Even tho digeablesoul Al's bike is expensive, can you Imagen how much it would suck if is bike was $5000 and Richie did a wheelie on his tandem into it. The bike's frame might be worthless now.

The type of riding we do is not as serious as a roadie, we are various types of riders who get together to have fun and party on our bikes. You don't get a $5000 bike to have a beer on, that wouldn't be the smartest move. If you are that serious about the sport you wouldn't do anything that would hinder your performance, like drinking a beer while you ride. If you are that serious, it might be why a bottle cage with less grams, is worth the extra $60. You would feel that a lighter accessory will enhance your performance, so you spend the money.

If I would have bought the carbon bike model, instead of the alum model that I ride now. With the way I ride The carbon bike would have been toast in a month and I might have seriously hurt myself on it.

Who would spend $600-$1000 on a scissors tool? Most would think that is a waste of money. Not a hair cutter who makes his living off of performing his art, trade, love with those shears. It is worth it to me to pay that much, and most cosmetologist have 5-10 sets of shears of that value. Its not unheard of, it actually the rule.

Most MR riders are commuter riders, or those that just ride for the fun of getting together on these rides, it is totally different then pushing yourself to do your best on a bicycle, like what a Roadie ride is. I would think we feel a sense of pride by our rides, because of the connection we experience while riding together, socializing, and getting inebriated as a group, along with the endorphins it produces while doing that together. (let me say that pride is a poor choice of words, for something that makes us happy - "we are proud to be American's" ---what the fuck does that mean??? it means we are happy that we are part of this country..)

I don't think you get that same experience from a pure athletic ride, like a said 'roadie ride', as a MR type party ride. You may feel good that you pushed yourself, and there might the experience of connection through a peloton line, but it is a not the same as the above descriptions on a party ride, its competitive vs non-competitive So I think, we feel special about the connection. I don't think we necessarily think of ourselves as better, but luckier, to be a part of something that brings so much joy in our live.

There might be animosity, about the fact that there is not that connection when somebody is doing a roadie type ride. If you have a goal, to get to certain place by certain time, with a certain speed, certain heart rate, certain rotation per minutes, you don't have the time to stop from achieving your pre-calculated goals, to say "HI" to another rider. With all that as the goal, you might not want to stop and help another rider, who has a mechanical problem.
People around here who stop and help others when they see another rider having problems, might think that those people don't get the connections/empathy, that they think bike riders should have for the another cyclist.

Overall, I'm saying they are two different types of rides, with different goals, that create different feelings, as a result of the experience.

I ain't mad at ya!
