Guidelines needed for deletes?

Man can we establish some guidelines and "laws" regarding deletions? There's currently a false sense of openness about MR that really needs to be addressed.
Either that or let everyone delete a thread they started.

it is pretty much an open and free forum... but sometimes at people's requests threads photos or comments get deleted. I deleted my thread because, while I still believe that REI should have better return policies for in stock brand new items with no receipt, as mk2454 pointed out, it was ridiculous for me to compare them with a regime that committed mass atrocities.... If I were to re-post I would retract that comparison.... but the topic was over and done anyway I didnt think anyone would be so passionate about it staying up.

That's not quite right. It cost people their time when someone devotes the time to properly explain how a little bit of commerce works when there's an on going discussion about it. It cost people their credibility when threads just vanish. Much like what would happen to people during the Nazi regime. There's no record of what happened, no guidelines set, just poof, and they're gone!

And it's not that I'm passionate about that thread in particular. I'm passionate about a lack of disclosure. I'm passionate about the lack of guidelines. I'm passionate about someone just pulling a thread that doesn't violate any of the points you bring up as to why threads are pulled.

yes RB, you do censor yourself a little too much. I do think that saying "Nazi regime" is a "catch all" phrase for something is totalitarian, and unreasonable in its actions. I don't think most take it as REI or whoever killed 6 million plus purposely of innocent people and try to take over all of Europe. I think some just throw that out there, because they heard it before (it not like what the Nazi's did) and it is a easy bitch slap in an argument, for somebody who uses it.
I have a concern that I don't think most take into consideration. It this name that we all associate with. I'm sure everybody thinks they are part of midnight Ridazz, but the reality that I hear, Is that it belongs to this girl name Kim, who isn't really part of this anymore.
It is a shame that so many people put so much effort into the rides and into this site, and the realitiy is that it is a name that is controlled by someone is isn't part of this.
My wish was that when the original organizers of this ride gave it over, that they would have let the name go too. But my understanding is that they didn't. So the original organizers put in 31 rides, and everybody else has now put in 50something rides and folks.... It's not your name. You are all not midnightRidazz. This is sad to my, because so many people associate what is going on with this sites, with the rides, with the whole bicycle community in LA as MidnightRidazzz.
I wish that name would have died with the original organizer participation in these ride. I wish it had another name.
OR that the original organizers let the name go to the people who are involved in it now.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

the name is out there for everyone to use but there are guidelines as to what it stands for of course, and there are restrictions on people using it for profit. someone can not just take the name ridazz and use it to promote a for profit venture nor can they create items for sale bearing the name or mark because the name Ridazz, Midnight Ridazz and the logo are all copyrighted trademarked works. it works to ensure that some company or person doesnt abuse the name or try to hijack it's original meaning. we are all midnight ridazz because the rides and the movement is composed of everyone who participates. but dont expect to take it and profit from it.

Yes the "post new" button states in part, "The Midnight Ridazz reserve the right to remove, edit, move or delete anything for any reason.", but this is very misleading. It gives the impression that there's a governing force of a group behind this site. When in fact it's just you. So wouldn't it be better to disclose that to all the visitors here? Either put your name in place of "The Midnight Ridazz", or let the people know who are "The Midnight Ridazz." One female and one male is the governing force behind MR or whatever it is.
Disclosure is what is asked for here Don. If it's just one person, which I think it is, I see you abusing our trust in you.

I had the same issue with the note above 'post new', until I realized that midnightridazz.com is Don/Kim and Midnight Ridazz is all of us. Someday there will be other sites that will provided an enhanced service but until then this all we got. It's all part of an evolution, before this site we had bikeboom.com.

So why do we HAVE to a debate? I didn't know this was a debating web site. Personally, I like to check out this site to see what rides are going on that I can try and catch. I heard this site described as a place to go if you're looking for a ride.
I am a competent and reasonable person and I don't feel mislead and I really don't care if there are any restrictions. I'm a big boy, if I didn't like the way this site is being run, I'd start one up myself. As I recall, I asked to join this site, RB didn't force me into it.I don't see where RB is saying no one else can start up a site. If you want a site where we can debate, then have at it and start your own. Otherwise, as far as I'm concerned, talk is cheap. I'm sure you have the ability to start up your own website and maintain it. I'm sure you can find a server to host it on, so have at it.
Rather than piss and moan about it, I'm just glad he's taking the time to maintain the site and for that, I'm extremely grateful.

Lars from Bikeboom is pretty busy. There are other people on this site that can post for you, I think Richie has posting rights. Bikeboom has been instrumental in getting the movement started. Lars is certainly one of the pioneers of this movement and is a very strong biking advocate.

Thread got long while I was typing the following, but here it is anyway:
This is why my favourite motorcycle forum doesn't allow any topics of a political nature.
So there's kind of a slow moving offline discussion going on about upgrading the forum aspect of the MR site to software that offers more functionality, including the ability to edit your own posts, have multiple topic areas, and maybe even have (gulp!) moderators. Clearly, there are some who think we ought to drive that conversation forward a little harder.
These kind of meta-threads about the forum have arisen a couple of times since I've started participating, and there are obviously some people with strong opinions. I don't know anything about the midnight ridazz name, but it has a couple of things going for it - it is cool as hell and has pretty good brand recognition at this point, so I'd be loathe to abandon it. It seems more likely that we could reason with whoever does 'control' the name and allow it to be controlled by the community, if we are willing to define what that community is. But that would probably mean establishing some kind of guidelines for how the ridazz conduct their business. Bylaws, if you will. Personally, I hate having to get all formal over crap like this, and it seems to rub against the grain of anarchy the generally rules here, but it could be that at least a little formalizing of policy would be in order. We could use the opportunity to put together a committee of techno-geeks who would be responsible for putting together a plan for upgrading the site, too. I already know at least a couple of folks who are very much interested in that aspect of things.
My biggest concern in all this is to, as much as possible, not fuck with the spirit of Midnight Ridazz and the feel of this little community we've got going here, cause I really like the way it works for the most part.
I'm going to leave it to Roadblock to cast a yay or nay vote on whether we should proceed, but I'll offer up my house for a dinner and discussion for how we might proceed if the consensus is that we should do it that way (and the numbers look small enough to fit in my space).
Obviously, the tech improvements can and should be totally separate from any discussion of structural changes to the way MR conducts itself from an organizational perspective, but a single meeting in which we decide how to proceed from there will almost certainly be better than having the discussion on a thread in the forum. Personally, I'm pretty comfortable with roadblock staying on as a benevolent dictator. There's a reason the vast majority of successful open source software projects have someone sitting in just such a role. But it is also good to know the guidelines from which the BD will be working, too. It makes everyone feel more comfortable. And some folks object purely because their egos want the opportunity to be 'in charge' to some degree themselves, and anyone who is feeling that way probably ought to just go start their own community. My only concern is keeping MR as close to its original feel and purpose as possible even while we grow into an ever larger community. Yes, we'll probably have to make compromises along the way, but the trick is to keep them to a minimum.
And just for the record, it is important for folks to remember that a heated conversation on a forum thread, no matter the topic, isn't personal. People tend to speak more strongly online than they do in person, especially when they disagree, and that's generally cool, but it would be good for folks to keep that in mind. I certainly don't take anything about the REI thread personally, that's for damn sure, and I hope no one else does, either. I happen to like the company and stood up to defend them, but if I can't convince anyone else, that's OK, too. I'll still shop there. Politics of any kind online are pretty hard to moderate, but also a very interesting and entertaining topic of conversation. It is just as easy to post a retraction or apology as it is to delete a thread, though allowing post edits through more sophisticated software seems the ultimate answer to that particular problem. Some of the people whose opinions I respect most were originally adversaries in political conversations online, and we still disagree almost as much today as we did back then. Damn conservatives! But they are still dear friends, and we'd all be wise to remember that friendship is way more important than partisan opinion.
Oh, and Don, for the record, I am not in the slightest bit bothered by the content of, or the fate of, the REI thread. I just found it to be an interesting conversation.

I even think that discussing CM in this forum was a little too much but the Obama thread that clearly political. Obama's popularity and the fact that the thread was posted by RB probably made it OK but it bothered me a bit.

And some folks would just like it spelled out as to what gets deleted and what doesn't. Just because a member questions the authority of the o powerful one, should that grievance be addressed or is it off to the volcano with this member for a sacrifice to the bike gods? Do we delete all of the posts from our human sacrifice?

yeah, that Salton Sea was crazy. I was only their for 8 hours and it took me a couple of days to recover. I guess it affect everybody differently. I was a crazy dynamo with all this tension for a day, and the two times I released that tension, I was drained to where I couldn't move after.
Maybe that is what is going on, maybe somebody has some serious tension buildup that is being released around.

Hey Allan, I wasn't thinking of you when I posted about the ego thing. I wasn't thinking about anyone in particular, actually. I've just had enough experience with the internets to know that there are always folks who crave that moderator label just so they can be the big fish. Those people should never be moderators. If they don't have to be dragged kicking and screaming into the job, they shouldn't be doing it, if you ask me.
Oh, and about that black poop. I bet they ate some of Charlie's deck screws. That'd do it, don'tcha think?

Sam, when you mentioned the ego thing. I thought you where talking about the kittens eating ice cream at the REI and the store manager telling the kittens that there is no eating ice cream in the store. Then the kitten say that they are members at REI and they redeemed their rebates, with the ability to eat ice cream inside the store.

the infamous Black Poop was in the 'women's toilet, but i saw a few men come out of there.
we should have had toilet meowoderators to make sure the proper sex enters the correct toilet and then to check to see if they make black poop or not. if they do, meowoderators yells out: "MEOWIEZZ!" to alert the entire camp so a photo opportunity is not missed and then we can throw the culprit into the fire pit.

I did.
I had just woken up. I had a splitting headache and I didn't want to figure out where I could pull my wiener without offending anybody. It also had a sink where I could wash my face and my hands before handling your breakfast.

Not my term, unfortunately. Its the (semi?) official title of the person who controls what code gets accepted in some open source projects, particularly the linux kernel, where Linus has long been referred to as a benevolent dictator.
