Prelude to The Passion!
I'm gonna ride this route on this upcoming Friday night at the same start time and location of the actual ride but sans costume and stopping along the way to explore beachy regions and turn-offs along the way.
Anybody who wants to join in the roving as a laid back precursor to the next night's sure-to-be-off-the-chain C.R.A.N.K. MOB is totally welcome to. Just look for a dude in blue pants by the traveling rings at 9:30. We'll roll out at 10.

well I'm positive I'll be trashed on sunday after C.R.A.N.K. MOB, in no condition to attempt a fun adventure up the coast. You're right though; there are a few fun rides going on that night. Not sure if I can pull it off on an earlier night of the week with my work schedule though. I've been getting off really late this past couple of weeks.

Drew, I love that idea dude. Will somebody look into it and get back to me with an address? It might not be too far off our route and I'm open to augmenting it.
I disagree on one point though. What Women Want would be the BEST part because it couldn't quite be pulled off with a costume alone! If we could get some girls and the appropriate Mel to perform a 30 second version of the film in front of his place it would be awesome.
Undercover Bob02.15.08 - 10:35 pm
reply
Hey, I'm curious; what are some costume ideas people have? I'm thinking of going as Mel from the hospital scene in Conspiracy Theory, thus wearing a hospital gown and handcuffing myself to my bike frame (in place of the bed rail he was handcuffed to during his frantic escape).

Hah! Of course it's cheesy! That was a pretty cheesy movie. I was only kiddin' anyway but if somebody actually could whip out a 30 second version of that plot, it would probably be pretty amusing.
Love the Lethal weapon costume with mullet wig. That's a great idea!

As far as the construction, we will definitely have to circumvent that. Ryan and I are going to check it out on Wednesday. If any one drives PCH before then, can you map out where the construction starts and ends.

What wouldn't be a bad idea is to set out some road flares before we start our ride on PCH. I'll bring some myself.

kudos for the safety comments... if any of the megaphone-posessing crowd wants to coxswain for those portions come up to ryan, brandon or myself (brett) and make yerself known--
when i called malibu PD asking them about risk they stressed a semi-single file with slight staggering to max visibility etc.

hitsthepoles_ow03.3.08 - 8:06 pm

yeah, there have been a lot of bicycle related accidents on PCH in the news recently so we'll be stressing safety and order for the PCH portion of this ride. Until we're off PCH, everyone will be asked to please follow the guidelines suggested by Malibu PD and CHP. It's a single file line with two in front and two in back to allow room for passing in between. See below:

As soon as we dismount PCH it will be safe to return to a relaxed formation for the remainder of the ride.
The only reason that we may want to avoid Mel's neighborhood is that Malibu PD has developed a reputation for being particularly unfriendly with cyclists and in the interest of avoiding trouble, it may be smarter to turn around at Moonshadows. None the less, brando, hits the poles, and myself, will attempt to scope it out on wednesday

okay, we rode the route last night and it was a far more pleasant experience than I expected. The bike path on the beach takes us more than half way to our destination and the time on PCH is fairly relaxed. There are share the road signs along the way, assuring that we are supposed to be there on our bikes and the shoulder was plenty wide enough for two or three cyclists to ride side by side with room to spare (except for one 10 yard stretch where it got narrow).
The three of us felt perfectly safe all the way and discovered a few cool stopping places.
Along the way, the bike path will take us past the "beach resort" where the vacation episodes of Saved by the Bell were staged as well as a Baywatch boat, conveniently docked in a parking lot for photo ops.
Speaking of photo ops, I how about mug shots? What do y'all think of bringing a backdrop to take our own Mel Gibson mug shots?
Undercover Bob03.6.08 - 12:41 pm

User1 re: configuration, the police really just ask us to stay to the right and keep single file as much as possible with two in front and two side by side in front and back whenever safe/comfortable. Since we have a pretty comfortable shoulder along the route, I don't think it will be difficult to maintain.

Whoa! That was one of the best rides!
The beach was amazing. There were a good number that flew at a good pace up the PCH. When we wanted to break we did. And it was easy to find spots along the PCH that were safe and nice. The police would stop by us occasionally and ask what we were up to and wish us luck. They didn't hassel at all, only to say not to get in accident. They, I believe, were just impressed.
Moonshadows didn't know what hit them. I didn't realize what an upper class bar that was. The Valet was parking high end cars and huge hummer limos (GROSS!!!!) were parked in front. And he we were the lot of us painted in and dressed in Mel Gibson memorabilia from his films. They welcomed us and served us and we took over the bar, screaming, "FREEDOM!" every fifteen minutes. The patrons were more interested than pissed and struck up conversations with everyone.
The ride back was pretty much down hill and niiiiice. Then we hit the rings and i didn't get home till well after the 5am mark --- believe it or not it was such an awesome ride, I got up twenty minutes ago -- 6pm.
CRAZY FUN!!!
When is the next one, Brando, Ryan and Brett????
What will that theme be?
bondink03.8.08 - 6:22 pm
reply
wowie WOW! That ride really did exceed my expectations!
I honestly thought that we would just hang out in the parking lot by moonshadows for a little bit before we turned back. I was as surprised as the staff of the posh malibu eatery when our whole army of face painted Mel Gibsons stormed the bar while screaming "FOR FREEDOM!!!" at the tops of their lungs. Commandeering the bar for over an hour while the swanky customers became outsiders at a party they weren't invited to was AWESOME. Thank you all for making it happen!
Big ups to B-Dog for making it all the way from san francisco for the ride and for bringing the awesome Passion of the Christ bandaids. Props to the guy on the tallbike (whose name I don't recall but was awesome enough to meet us outside the bar as we were leaving).
Soultrain! I'm glad that you're okay after that fall but I'm sorry to hear about your helmet and hat. Did your camera make it home with you? Did you get any pictures worth posting?

I have to say that ride was better than expected. I have to say though I did not get to experience the ride fully.
I could not contain myself on the HWY and had to kick up the pace a notch Emeril style. Who was the the Brave Heart in the front break away pack? His steed was a Specialized with Record Group. I have to say nice riding. I enjoyed the pace. We should ride again. I usually put in a metric century on the weekends.

The 8-bit ride sounds awesome!~ I have the perfect hawaiian shirt for that ride too! I say we get this ride in motion! At each stop we can bust out handheld Nintendo DS and play some linked games of tetris, mario cart or just send perverted sketches back and forth with the pictochat!

July 25th 2009 on Saturday would be a good day for this.

User103.9.08 - 12:57 pm

User1 so sorry you didn't make it. A lot of people who went on the ride didn't go to SMCM first. Before we left the rendezvous point a few of us started calling out "Where's User1? Is User1 here?" because we thought for sure that we'd see you.
I know people thought this ride was going to be dangerous and risky but it seriously wasn't. It was safe and pleasant. We had a beach bike path for more than half the ride and when we were on PCH we had a huge shoulder. Drivers were courteous and police were supportive. This is a far more comfortable ride than people realize and anyone who is still afraid of the route is just a wimp. Any of the 25+ folks who went can vouch for that. As far as an anniversary ride is concerned, a few ridazz talked about doing that because we had so much fun. I'd love to do it again.

That is crazy to me that the ridazz are afraid to ride this route. I thought they were adventurers. The ride was not dodgy at all..... Riding the same city routes gets really old.
I actually liked the size of this ride. Everyone met each other and there were no fake people there...very cool!
No worries to the gents who busted out ahead of the pack. Ryan, Brett and myself would have joined you but
the captains needed to stay with the ship...
I agree we should do it again this July 25th 08. It will be summertime, and it should be really nice at the beach.
8bit ride will probably be next if everyone likes that idea.
We have other ride ideas that if we told you about, we would have to kill you... : )

Well the cat is out of the bag...
We've actually been working on a "red tide ride" I have been researching it and it seems that red tide may happen randomly.
I am still looking into it... : ) Let's focus on the other rides until i can get more info....

oh man, what if we all went to moonshadows during the red tide AS the red tide? Red capes for everyone! Maybe a few people tied together with red rope? Painted up as the polar opposite of blue man group?
