with an official stop at the end ot the century....then another leg to SD.

FEB 2 or 3 would be real nice.
I would be delighted to do some variation of the classic DC route again, its such a beautiful route, and such a great century for beginners.

We need the Cretins, et al. to come out to this one. They were rad on LATOSD.

Seriously, let's roll to SD!
kyber12.3.07 - 5:29 pm

I need some input from the veterans of DARCKCEN.
The Dark Century is an urban ride in the Los Angeles area. To make it 'just' a ride down to SD would be giving away the culture and the idea.
But, I am all for adding a part of the ride that ends up in SD.
What do you guys think? Milla? Nomad? Beatriz? Stacey? Gordo? Creativething?
tern12.3.07 - 5:38 pm
reply
It would be like a two stager.
The first stage is DarkCen....then a few would continue to San Diego.
Is that what you mean, Kyber. That's the way I see it. I'm down for a double century.
tern12.3.07 - 5:45 pm
reply
Ok, double century is fine with me.
kyber12.3.07 - 5:49 pm

or...we could make it a one-time-only century plus a little bit....to get tight with the SD bike riders.....
input, please.

I've never done the san diego thing. I guess thats a must do, right of passage.
But yeah, I'd be perfefectly happy to do a variation of the classic route over and over. Its so beautiful and inviting to a beginner.
And of course a loop is cheaper because there is no fare home.
The ease of the classic DC loop makes it more enticing for first timers. I think that is one of the charms of DC I am one of many riders that did their first century on that route and there are many more that could and should.
That is unless you are all bored of it and want to try somthing else.
.....
On the flipside ... San Diego is enticing.
What about the freeway vs. marine base. will they let us in for sure at 3am?
3am on the freeway sounds beautiful but death-wish scary.
If we started in LB then it it would be a straight century no?
Perhaps a bit easier for the first time SD ridazz.
(20 miles isn't far except when it tacked to the end of a 100 mile ride)
The 2x century sounds totally unapealing to me.
At least in this context. I mean, sure I could probally do it if I had to.
But I'm not sure I want to find out after riding all night and not sleeping.

I vote for a loop (start and finish at the same point) within the Los Angeles basin.

Okay, milla. Nicely said. Let's talk about the ride. (we are in phone contact.)
He's right. If there is a final double century leg....It will probably be j9-20 miles over 200.
This whole thing is gonna get worked out. And, I think, everyone will be happy.
We will figure this out. Let's have some ingenious types post routes that will axxomodate all of us.

I think I am getting close to being able to pull a double with no huge problems...that being said, the DARK CENTURY has become a ride for people to get their legs. We should make it a ride that welcomes people riding their first century.
But, I still think there is a group of people who can make a 200 mile ride. So, if we do the Double Dark....the second 100 miles will be unpublished...and just after the DARK CENTURY III. There is a website for this stuff. We will update it soon enough.
The Dark Century is one of my favorite things...so I am not going to add the extra hundred mile leg immediately. I might not add it at all. I have to talk to the other people who have made this happen to see if they think it is good for the ride.
If it ends up that a double century option is not attached to the ride, then I will host another ride that is 200 miles....promise.
But, I still think there is a possibility of having an extra stage on THE DARK CENTURY.

Tern, don't shut out the newbies who may have been waiting for you to have another Dark century. A 200 would be a great ride for the spring or even planned out for later 08. man, user 1...take it easy. I wasn't trying to make upset you...serious. Marino posted about doing a double centrury and then going to San Diego. Of course, he was trying to be funny. tern12.5.07 - 10:25 pm

anyway...it seems that most people want to keep to the original format. We will change up the route this time...we might use part of the former route....
So, next if figuing out a date. milla mentioned a Friday/Saturday full moon in a couple of months. This might be a good idea...so that we can have a full ammount of time to have rides at increasing distances for those who need to get ready to ride on their first century....

I'll tell everyone the date of the ride sometime this weekend. Then we have to get busy planning and routing and testing training rides for any newbies who need the extra mileage before the ride. I don't want to draw it out for too long. So, once we are settled on a date. I'm gonna get moving right away to get everything routed, scouted and planned.
I am happy for anyone to help me plan and scout.

Tern,
i'm guessing you mean 2/2/08 carrying over into 2/4/08. if that's the case I must declare that you are not a football fan because February 3rd is Super Bowl Sunday. Its not like we are planning to
play in the Super Bowl. Stopping for breakfast at the end, will have us home at 6 or 7 am at the very very latest that gives people plenty of time to have a power nap and get all rested up so they can be fresh to eat, watch tv, and drink beer.
If your friends see your bloodshot eyes they might mistake you for being almost as wasted as they are.
I don't think the Super Bowl is a ligit excuse for anybody unless you are personally hosting a SB party. SBS party planners get a pass. (after all we'll need somewhere to go can do some recovery carboloading). The rest of us should have no problem riding all night and dragging our asses out of bed and over to a friends house to put in some serious couch time.
trickmilla12.10.07 - 10:43 am
reply
I don't even know who played in last years super bowl. I think I was out on my bike, taking advantage of deserted streets during the game.
I understand that many people are looking forward to the super bowl. And, I don't want to lose any riders because we scheduled the ride for the night before the game--especially you, mindfullofmusic....
But, there is no way around it...this is the best date for Dark Century III. I've been over and over the calander, trying to find a more fitting date.
Riding on a Friday night would hinder people who have to work from making the ride in time with traffic. We experienced this on the first Dark Century.
So....the date stands. I hope you can still make it out, mindfull. We will be starting earlier than Dark Century II because it gets dark way earlier in February.
The Dark Century III will take place on the night of Sturday, February 3rd.

No google map yet, and that's because the hybrid thing gets me all confused up at the Santa Fe Dam. The route we road went a lil sum like dis:
Meet at Orange 20's
Right on Melrose
Left on La Brea
Left on Washington
Right on Alameda
Left on Vernon
Left on Leonis (or however you spell that)
Enter L.A. River Trail
Ride to da LBC
Ride to end of RV Park
Go over some bridge to Ocean Blvd, go right
Go all the way to Belmont Shores
End up on PCH (I forgot the exact way, so it was probably by magic)
Enter San Gabriel River Trail
Ride all the way up to the Santa Fe Dam
Meander to the 7-11
Ride Huntington all the way down to Colorado Pl (there's a fork in the road by the Santa Anita Race Trck so we went right)
Head to Colorado Blvd, ride into Old Town, Pasadena
Go over Suicide Bridge (the one with the pretty lights)
Head down Colorado
Left on Figueroa
Take that down to San Fernando, go left
Right on Pasadena
Right on Broadway
Right on Cesar Chavez
That turns into Sunset
Sunset to Vermont
Vermont to Melrose
Back to O20
This is the ride we scouted. Any further "doctoring' up of said route will be done by the Tern.

Sorry you're the sicks. For next weeks training ride, we are thinking of doing the LAPD support ride. It's 50 miles, plus whatever we through in. Should be a slow pace. Good for recovering from flu's.

NewB, many THINGS for posting the route. Looks like Tern has improved a good thing with Old Towne Pasadena. Just remember your lights. The Pasadena cops like bike lights.
I'll see you Saturday at the Academy. 8 am...yeah!

I'm excited! This is gonna be fun and epic!
I've been bike commuting (a fairly long commute--about a metric with 2400 ft. incline). It rained last night on the way home and it rained this morning....the rain isn't so bad...I'm wearing wool knickers and sweater and long underwear...it has worked really well so far....
Make sure to have enough warm clothes for tomorrow night...if we have mechanicals, we could be standing around a bit...those are the times it gets coldest...
See you there!!

Plus....it will be my bithday, once we are about 70 miles into the ride! I can't think of a better way to spend my birthday than riding 100+ miles overnight, in the rain, with my friends!! For Real.

I can imagine the thiose who make the ride will feel an extra sense of accomplishment after riding in the rain. That's the reason this century is at night.
When can you ride a hundred miles?
On a warm spring morning?
How about at night?
How about at night when its cold?
How about at night when its cold and raining?

I talked to a bunch of people who have become a part of the dark century over the last year, and we agreed that keeping the dark century it's own thing would be better for continuity. So, we decided not to add the SD route to make it a double century.
but....the double century is in the works....and it ends in San Diego...
Maybe you'll be able to make that ride later this spring, mixtemotions.
Tomorrow though......Dark Century....rain or moonshine!

Hey Tern,
Not sure if you're aware of this. When it rains, they close down parts of the San Gabriel river trail due to flooding. we may need an alternate route.
mindfullofmusic02.22.08 - 3:13 pm
reply
That shouldn't be too hard to figure out. There are plenty of parallel paths to the south that are easy to take. Once we get up near the damn, it may be harder. But I'll have a computer on my bike to track mileage, so if we need to improvise, we can still try to hit 100 miles.

Hey guys,
Wish you the best tonite on your ride.
I see there's a couple of questions on what to wear tonite. What you DON"T want to wear is crap made out of cotton. With exception of your undies, everything you put on should be made out of anything but cotton. The other rules still apply which is to layer and stay warm. Hot liquids do wonders too.
Good luck.

I'm wimping out. I'm all for riding in the rain under normal circumstances, but I know I'll get pretty miserable on a ride this long if I'm wet, no matter what I wear, so I'm backing out. Oh well.

9 of us did the route. Leslie (Creative Thing) started it early and met up with us at Orange 20.
I have never been so ridiculously miserable and ecstatic at the same time. I slept for like 4 hours, but my internal clock is flipping out. OH man, I am in so much pain.
Kyber, your socks ruled until my leg warmers slid down my legs and water trickled inside them. I was swimming in water for about 30 miles before I was able to change into my spare socks in Duarte. Those stayed dry for about 5 miles.
AHHH WE ARE AWESOME. BEST DARK CENTURY EVER!!!!

Epic insanity. I've never pedaled through water that deep in my life. As Meghan pointed out, it's a good thing the motor on a bicycle doesn't cut out when submersed underwater. Amazing everyone, that was the most hardcore shit ever. Who the hell bikes 100 miles in the rain, in the dark, with cold head winds. We do, because we are mental.
