And yes, i'm guessing Bike Punk must be Danny's twin brother or something.

User101.29.08 - 12:52 pm

No one has every attempted it fixed. The problem lies in finding a gear that can get you up all of the hills AND get you to each of the hills. It is probably possible, though would be very tedious. I wouldn't stop you from trying!
Once someone suggested riding the hills on fixed and then getting driven to the next hill. It was a comment unworthy of a response.

Not sure if that would be enough of a difference.

Long, ass hills=Bitchin' flight back down!!!
Not to mention they have an ending.
My recumbent's slow on most hills like that due to "no standing to put in extra torque-action", but I steam up them anyway.
When the weather get's a little warmer, I was thinking of riding from Hesperia to Silverwood Lake.
Last time I did that was back in 11th grade.
50-60 mile round trip, on an old-ass, Cannondale SM700.
The 138 winding up towards the lake is an awesome view, indeed.

For those of you still thinking about coming out, here are some tips that may help you finish:
Make sure your toe clips or clipless pedals are real tight (but not too tight that you can't pull out)
Be able to get into your lowest gear without any rubbing or skipping.
Don't wear roadie shoes. If you do unclip it makes not falling over that much harder. Also, there is a 50% chance of rain (of course) and those roadie shoes will be terrible for any walking in the areas we'll be in.
Be prepared for the rain. I'd ride in a soft shell and have a rain jacket for in between hills.
Get your stuff ready the night before. I can't tell you how many people have told me that they intend or intended on coming, but flaked out. If all your shit is ready to go then you have fewer excuses in the morning.
Lastly, make sure you bring water and some food.
See you Saturday morning.

franz, most road (short cage) derailers will only handle a maximum of a 28 tooth cassette; anything bigger than that and you'll have to change to a long cage derailer.

I would love to do this ride but...
A. Im doing the Dark century that night
B. I attempted Fargo Street last year and could not ride all the way up. I think I know how to do it now, but that one street is not to be taken lightly! It WILL kick your ass.

The first year we did this race it rained. It was so much fun I recommended we do it the first rainy weekend of each year. Witch apparently the rain gods thought was a great idea. See you Saturday for the slowest, slipperiest, race of the year.

I Feel My Legs, but not my fingers and toes, I'm not a Racer.
I froze my ass off today, this was a "bad idea ride", was snowing/hailing most of the way up. The way up was fine.. but the way down was torture, piercing wind.
good practice anyhow

the race/ ride was awesome. watching Cole busting 40mph down a suicidal hill was awesome at first then pretty painful when he flew 15 feet then slid 15 more feet on his body. I actually went back to the scene of the crime yesterday and measured. looking at that photo of Cole And Hobgoblin pretty priceless.

Studiodrome! did you see this quote from above?
"Cole broke his collarbone going down on Baxter."
That's fucking funny.
meandmybluebike02.25.08 - 3:19 pm

wasn't trying to insinuate the crash and broken collarbone as funny. rather the suicidal bomb drop Cole did down Baxter.
the hill that Cole flew down was so fucking steep that everyone was going down it as slow as possible, some people were walking down. Not only because the hill is steep as fuck and that there is a stop sign at the bottom of the hill where cross traffic does not stop but also because the road conditions at the bottom are fucked up.
so here goes Cole down at full speed, that part was awesome, when he flew 15 feet then slid 15 feet pretty gnarly, gruesome sight. though he hopped up to his feet immediately like he was fine.
it took him like 5 minutes to realize he was fucked up. Went to Hospital but made it to Pureluck for after party.

fuck, you guys there is something wrong with me today thats pretty hilarious. I literally had to read that like 5 times to figure out what was going on.
I'm quite a zombie after doing that Feel My LEgs ride with 30 pounds of cameras and shit in my bag. then doing a 4 hour tour of the Eco-Village yesterday really pushed me over the edge.

LOL Baxter. Get well soon, Cole.
I'm sure he was going faster than 40 if he was going full speed. I ride down Duane several times a week and even with two dual-pivot or canti brakes rubbing I'm going 30-35.

I'm working on the write-up, but have been swamped with other stuff. Hopefully soon. The photos keep rolling in, thanks everyone.
If only there was footage of Cole's crash. He was in the air and skidding (sans bike) long enough for everyone standing there to look at each other and reflect before he stopped sliding. It was crazy.
bike punk02.26.08 - 12:17 pm

i just missed getting footage of Coles crash, I have an interesting interview with him after the wreck though.
I went back and measured again, possible that Cole slid 25 feet after he went down, its a very difficult calculation to make.
I heard Cole was in VIP tent at Tour of California race in Pasadena?

^^ yeah he was. Me and Alex called him to come hang out on the course but he was like "no I'm special now. You guys can eat a shit sandwich." : (
I just looked at the gallery -- Jack is in the "Swarm" jersey in one shot, and a yellow jersey in another. Changing outfits between hills? Jack is worse than Prince.
City Hobgoblin02.26.08 - 4:52 pm
reply
the yellow jersey was from last year.
the swarm jersey is actually a swarm skinsuit. i'm not sure if it would have been more hilarious to have changed jerseys or to do an urban ride in a skinsuit.

Yes, the pics in the gallery represent the last two years of the event; I didn't want to start a new gallery section (maybe I should have?) so I just added to what was already there.
The most recent 40 are from this year, the rest from last year. Looks like they're all my photos. Sorry for any confusion

Thanks to everyone who came out and rode and to all the Swarm!ers who work to make this ride happen. Here is my write-up
Feel My Legs for the third time on my bloggy blog.
Our next event is an alley-cat style cyclocross race that involves riding to, and then running up with your bike, 10 different sets of stair cases. It's called Thus Climbed Zarathustra (first one was on Nietzsche's b-day). It's April 5th at noon. Meets at the dog park in Silver Lake.

Quick question.
Taking a poll of sorts. Just curious what the large cog is on the rear cassette you guys used on this event?
I did a lot of climbing this weekend and decided to replace my rear cassette to make life a little easier. I thought i had a 12-25 in the rear but learned that i'd been climbing with a 12-23 (50-34 in the front). I've climbed every hill i've trained on but its been sloooow.
I had a choice of going to a 25 or 27 for the large cog but decided on the 25.
