If I'm able to make this ride, I'm wearing my SG-1 fatigues.
We'll just say the ninth Chevron was dialed, crashed the North American power-grid, depleted two ZPM's, and we traversed the event-horizon using a "Puddle-Jumper".
Said wormhole connected to an even, further away galaxy and now we have to ally ourselves with the Imperial Forces to utilize the core of the Death Star to dial back to SGC.
Sounds like a plan!!!!!!!

@bananaphone.
Coming from a StargatePuddleJumper, I suggest you only focus any concern on the the trilogy itself.
While the new-school, before-the-time, ones were alright, they still won't compare to the glory that is Snowspeeders vs. AT-AT's, getting tripped by A-Wings with piano wire.
Hell, the original F-302 prototype was actually an abandoned X-Wing that was caught up in a 9th Chevron, matter-stream!!!

CORRECTION.

Dak Ralter was the pilot that was tail-gunner for Luke Skywalker at the Battle of Hoth. He was the tail-gunner that trapped in the Snowspeeder, that was eventually smashed by a AT-AT.

For a split second I confused him with Zack, of the Battle of Yavin, one of the few Starfight pilots that survived the destruction of the Deathstar.

Then it occurred to me that hydrogen is way cheaper, and I could make it in my backyard (if I had a backyard) with aluminum foil and drain cleaner.

At the same time, I was thinking about what to do with the balloon at the end of the ride, and...

sorry bro, but last night's ride swore me off midnight ridazz for a while.

usually the rides just circle around a general perimeter for 20mi allowing for some (handicap, elderly, poor) to cut out whenever and still be pretty close to their car/home. but damn, last night we just kept heading east and more east to uncharted territories. you either had to wait for the pack to finish their beer or venture on your own on a long and arduous ride back to the homestead.

Bánh Mì
05.10.08 - 10:05 am

reply

Damn, That sucks Danny broke his collar bone. Do you think you can still manage the ALC with a brace on, or is that out of the question? I'm really sorry this happened.

Fortunately I remembered most of Danny's route that he showed to me. It certainly was an epic route. We started late, we had a lot of flats, but most of us made sure no rida was left behind. I had fun.

To Future Organizers:

I propose we keep future 2nd Friday Midnight Ridazz in the traditional 18 mile distance, unless the majority disagree.
I think routes like these are perhaps not the best for all types of riders. Last night's route measured up to 25+ miles. I mean, people like to show up in penny farthings and cruiser bikes, which is rad, but it makes it harder for them to want to come out to epic rides like this one. I'm all for big rides to new places, but I feel that most of the Ridazz were confused and disoriented. Nonetheless, it was something different than we have ever done, we stayed together and rode on!

Those who barrel ahead of the music trailer end up learning the hard way. Especially if you don't know the route. You are going to miss a turn or get lost. The music trailer is trying to provide a pace so that everyone can stay together or at least catch up when we regroup. People have been trying to point out this issue to others, but its hard to communicate to everybody... Don't get discouraged. Keep on riding together safely and our rides will work out well.

I believe the next 2nd Friday Midnight Ridazz is being organized by the cubbies?

I forked off by the river path in "who the fuck knows where" with some other folks, and was told to head a certain direction by many people to head downtown.

We ended up heading south for like 4-5 miles (the wrong way, mind you), had to hop a fence to get out of the path, and ended up lost in El Monte.

We were then stuck in what seemed like a redneck town in the midwest. Dude rolls up in a pickup, and an empty beer can spills out as he opens the door. El Monte police roll up on us telling us "TRANSIENTS! TRANSIENTS, GET OUT OF EL MONTE!!" over the megaphone while shining lights on us.

Ended up hitching a ride with the 2 other people we rode out with. But not before calling their roommate to come get us at like 230.

So many crashes. What happened to the dude on the red road bike (schwinn?) who hit the concrete divider in the middle of the street and promptly face planted? I heard his face crack.

keep the rides more local, slower and definitely cut down the distance. there were a lot of new people there it seemed and 31 miles is a haul, especially on a cruiser bike.

First off, Danny hope you get well soon!

Second, the only problem I had with the ride was the distance. This was not a ride for new riders. I know most rides always go towards hollywood but I think we would have been better off going that way.

Third, im getting tired of all the riders trying to make this into a hustle ride. Like go to wolfpack on mondays or something. Dont come to MR rides trying show off how fast you can go. Than that makes eveybody else want to go fast. Leaving all the new/cruiser riders waaay behind.

Okay Ive talked enough. I had a good time.

Damn, 31 miles and I didn't make it out, this definitely sounded like an epic.

As for the flats and crashes, don't take this the wrong way, but it sounds like, "that time of the year" again.
Weather getting warmer, jackets/coats being thrown into closets, no more vapor in front of your face.

Nice weather for riding, but most of the seasonal rida's don't seem to run into trouble as often as the regular's do.
Hence the "getting lost", "busted tubes", and shocked by a far, yet not fast, route.

I'm not sure if anyone will learn from their mistakes or not, but as grim as it may sound, I like these testimonials.
Chaos, disorder, and drunken pandemonium is what makes the unjustly of us, feel just.

As far as the few times I've been chastised for going fast on cruise rides, I continually justify it for a given reason.
How else am I gonna get that bad-ass shot of 50-500 ridazz rolling in front of my camera?

Anywho, rubber-side down and hammer away 'til morning!!!

Longest & fastest MR ride in my experience by far; not necessarily a bad thing, but maybe we want to think about if this is the direction we want to go in. Overall, it was an amazing route that took us to places we hadn't been before.

Sorry to hear about all the crashes and shit that happened, especially to Danny . . . he really doesn't deserve that. Maybe I was lucky, I had a few close calls but I didn't really see any accidents. I did notice that the amount of sketchy riding went up dramatically after we left the first liquor store stop. There are enough people who can't ride straight when they're sober, so maybe a long drinking stop just makes it worse.

I was near the back at that point because when I returned to my bike, it had been knocked over, the chain was off and the lights were askew. Note to self: be a bit more careful about where you park next time. After putting everything back together, I noticed the large amount of trash left around the parking lot and a few of us stopped to help a guy from the store pick up.

Sure, I imagine most liquor store owners are happy to see us because we put money in their pockets, but do we really need to leave every place we stop strewn with trash? I really start to wonder what it says about us a group (and like it or not, we are seen as a group) and whether I want to be associated with such behavior. It's fucking embarrassing!

I was helping with (and getting) flats behind the group. We rolled up on Danny, who had broken his collar bone, while trying to avoid another rider who was riding straight into the group, in the opposite direction. Heal up quick, Danny!

Every ride I've been on, I notice plenty of trash and plenty of rightful places to dispose of it.
What is it, to tired and winded from slow-pedaling to chuck your waste-wrappers and containers into the trashcan 5-10 feet away?

Lazy, moronoholics!!!

@Danny, get well dude. You'll be healed up in no time.

The route was awesome. I loved the speed, I loved to distance. I love visiting places I've never been to...

BUT, NOT FOR MIDNIGHT RIDAZZ

and especially not for the 2nd Friday Ride.

These rides will be the first group rides for MOST people. Keep them slow, keep them local. I think the trash left behind, the crashes and incidents ARE a direct reflection of the current state of Midnight Ridazz. I find it sad. It's not what it was, it's not how it should be.

When, and if, you even plan any Midnight Ridazz - you HAVE TO THINK about the noobies, their cruisers and freak bikes. There are so many rides now, to appeal to your personal preferences - Drunk rides, fast rides, centuries and freak-bike rides. Stick to those rides, keep Midnight Ridazz easy and local.

Think about the Newbs! Dammit!

To be honest....a recycling trailer might not be a bad idea. It'd be heavier than shit, but hey, it's better than leaving cans/bottles strewn about all over.

Plus, whoever pulls it can make a couple bucks.

I honestly felt bad after we left that first stop. There was trash EVERYWHERE. It makes us look like a bunch of slobs, and it goes against my own personal values about how I feel our planet should be treated. Like rollers said, it made me question whether I want to associate myself with people who exhibit that kind of "disposable culture" mentality.

ben dangle

From my experiences with rides of that size, when you drop something that doesn't have significant value as a drink. It is usually better to let it go, instead of causing a possible collision when stopping to retrieve the item.

So for getting wet with something when riding, that just goes with the risks and fun bikes in the big city.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

As for the guy who got arrested, I heard the police car hit him, while riding his bike away from the officer. I heard the police then started to beat on the guy, and as usual when a police officer beats you up, he called out assault on a officer, on his radio. Isn't that great, anytime you get your ass kicked by a law enforcement officer, you get charged with assaulting an officer.

If anybody saw the police officer hit the cyclist with his car,
if this actually happened
IT IS IMPORTANT TO GO TO THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY OFFICE WITH YOUR TESTIMONY. Even though this guy resisted an officers order to stop, that does not give a police officer the right to use deadly force, especially if the officer is not threatened. That is tantamount to a police officer shooting someone in the back,as the person is running away. It is not allowed

I wasn't there, this is just what I heard.

the idea of a recycling/trash trailer isn't so necessary.

Bring two Trash bags for each stop instead

Put the trash in one,
put the recyclables in another.

It easier to pick up one or two trash bags and place them in your trash container (as a store keeper) then to pick up bottles, cans and trash thrown all over someones property.

Leave the recyclables at the property. No doubt a scavenger will be grateful for the find.

Sexy:

We've tried different systems of trash collection and it hasn't really worked. If you were there last night, that would have been a perfect example.

Sometimes people need a little incentive to do right, that's just how it is. And especially today's younger generation, sorry to say it, but a lot of people under age 25 have vastly different ideals than some of us.

And you're right, maybe we can make do with a good ol' war cry to the tune of "hey, pick up your trash you bloody cunts!" But maybe not.

At any rate, I'm willing to try the recycling trailer as a solo venture just to see how it works. I'm not expecting a miracle, I just want to see how well it does or does not work. I need to build myself a trailer either way, so it's not in vain.

Danny... when we heard what happened... a lot of people were worried about you. Heal up quick Danny.

The ride I thought was cool. I always like it when we go to new places and Alhambra and Monterey Park has really nice roads.... but also they have the their own PD and w/ only 7 sq miles to cover and the station not so far away... they show up pretty quick. I wasn't there when all that happened. Just heard what happened from others.... but again... I don't know about throwing your bike at the officer and walking away... not a good idea if that's what happened.

I definitely agree w/ what Borfo and Dak are saying. We got to think of the newbies so they would want to come back. If that would've been my first ride on a mtb w/ knobby tires... cruiser... freak bike.. that would've kicked my ass. It would be nice for the ride to circle around an area or maybe have the route ride by the start again.... at the middle of the ride so that people who get tired or can't hang can just get back easy. One reason why we went so fast... is that right when we reached El Sereno onto Valley Blvd it was an awesome smooth street and it had a slight downhill.... all the way to Del Mar.

How many stops were originally scheduled? Borfo and others.... thanks for taking the reigns and bringing the ridazz back. I would've totally missed you, Eric Hair, and chicken leather if I didn't see you waving the light saber.

Miguel from Arleta... thanks for the company back to the start. It sure made Cesar Chavez feel not so bad w/ someone with you.

Again.. one thing about this ride that I noticed... is that this is where I saw a lot of ridazz helping out others. From blackout blacklung giving his last tube to someone w/ no tube/crescent wrench/or levers... to Harry giving a push to a kid that could be Harry's own grandson... or the the guy that finally convinced to bring his girlfriend out for a ride and it so happened to be tonight. it's a good thing to see we watch out for each other.

I have to say that I don't think a long, non-local MR ride is a problem. It is great to see another part of the area that I've never been to before (on a bike or off).

But I think it is actually extremely helpful when the organizers post the route before the ride, so people know what they are getting into. At very least, they should post the distance. That way the noobs can judge whether it is a good ride for them or not.

And then everyone (including myself) should try to do a better job keeping a slow pace. Just so hard to hold back on those straight, long, smooth stretches.........

You that complains, (you all that are) you sound like the type of rider that drives to the start point. And now you're upset because you don't live by the bike like most of us, the rest of us and riding long and far is too boring and frustrating and exhausting for you, awe, poo wittle babies. It's because of hijacking fast riding idiots that rides get hijacked. In fact that same reason is why Danny went down and broke his collar bone. This happened in an effort to slow down you idiots (u know who you are, i sure as hell dont and me not knowing; that's pobably a good thing). So if on a social ride, please keep a decent pace with the music trailer. Is it that hard of a protocol to follow? If this is a fast ride like WPH then haul you asses away, but not in a social ride. Also i want to agree here with the trash at the stops. pick up your trash, that is not cool in anyway. Whinners, you throw a ride and see how much work goes into it. Then when you guide it let's see how well you do in controling it and the course, then and only then can you be that judgemental with you 2 cents.

Midnight Ridazz draws out more new cyclists than any other event I have ever attended. what you are suggesting is that every cyclist needs to ride 24/7. just because I "don't live by the bike like most of us," (I don't even know who you're speaking for) does not make me any less a part of the ride. yes, I ride my bike as often as possible. no, I do not ride to the start of every Ridazz event.

everybody needs to start somewhere. I did hear the objections of newcomers to the length of last night's ride. Ridazz simply need to be more welcoming to new people.

you go on to contradict yourself by suggesting that the fast riders should ride on WPH. the same holds true of long distances. 30+ miles is not going to encourage new people to come back.

I SAW THE WHOLE THING WITH THE COP. I DON'T KNOW THE KID ON THE BIKE, BUT THE COP ASKED HIM TO STOP. THE COP FELT THE KID WAS TRYING TO TAKE OFF, SO THE COP WENT FLYING ACROSS THE STREET AND LITERALLY RAMMED HIS CAR INTO THE KID ON HIS BIKE, SENDING HIM FLYING. AT THIS POINT ALL THE KID HAD TO DO WAS STAY PUT AND ANSWER THE COPS QUESTIONS/GET A TICKET/GET ARRESTED/WHATEVER, AND HE WOULD HAVE HAD A MAJOR LAWSUIT AGAINST THE COPS. BUT INSTEAD WHEN THE COP GOT OUT OF THE CAR THE KID STARTED YELLING AT THE COP TO LEAVE HIM ALONE, SWINGING HIS ARMS AND BIKE AT THE COP, EVEN KNOCKING THE COP DOWN ONCE, AND ALL THE WHILE RUNNING IN CIRCLES IN THE STREET. HE ENDED UP THROWING HIS BIKE AT THE COP AND TROTTING AWAY. NOT HIDING THE BUSHES OR RUNNNG HIS ASS OFF, BUT WALKING AWAY LIKE AN IDIOT WITH THE COP 20 YARDS BEHIND. BY THIS TIME ANOTHER COP DRIVES UP, JUMPS OUT, AND TACKLES THE KID TO THE GROUND, WHILE THE KID IS YELLING THE WHOLE TIME TO STOP HITTING HIM.

how fucking stupid and/or drunk is this kid to act like such an asshole. he went from winning a major lawsuit against the police department, to going to jail for drunk in public, resisting arrest, intent to inflict bodily harm, and assaulting an officer WITH A WEAPON. (yeah, when you throw your bike in someone's face, it's a weapon.)

furthermore, he's a represents midnight ridazz and all bike riders. some of you may think the cops are assholes. you haven't seen asshole. they could tear our rides apart giving tickets for drinking, smoking weed, not stopping at lights, not having light, unlawful assembly, etc, and just be general asshole. in six months time there wouldn't be one organized bike ride in los angeles. kids like this are just begging the cops to show us what asshole they can really be.

in the future if you get pulled over just stop and deal with it. you might get a ticket, but most of the time they just harass you and let you go.

@darth: who are the whiners you're referring to? I haven't owned a car in over 3 years, I ride every single day, I ride WPH now and then, and i feel very strongly that last night's ride was ridiculously long and fast for a 2nd friday night MR ride. It's just not inclusive of as much of a community as i would like. Knowing Danny as a rider, i don't fault him in the least - it makes sense that he would have considered this a totally feasible route, but he didn't even get to lead the whole ride due to his unfortunate and really quite depressing accident.
@everybody:
It seems to me what happened is that we got a lot of new people who are young and fit and like to go fast who managed to set the pace for all us regulars who didn't want to get left behind. Not that i think it was jared's fault in the slightest, but even the trailer was going pretty damn fast on the second half of the route...definitely faster than i've ever seen on one of these rides. Not only did this pace leave quite a few people in the dust, but there is no doubt in my mind that it contributed to crashes, since large-group-bike-handling skills scale very poorly with speed (ESPECIALLY with a lot of new riders...and here i don't mean people who don't ride bikes, i mean people who havent done 200+ person rides a lot). I missed all the significant crashes, but i saw 4 or 5 inconsequential ones (and the difference between the two is often a hair's width) and plenty of near-misses.

I'm all for cleaning up trash too, but the safety issues concern me a lot more.

andyway now that i got my rant out of the way i wanna say PROPS to EVERYBODY who kept the group together, pulled the trailer, was nice to cops, cleaned up their trash, and/or finished the ride! It's great to see that there ARE so many riders who are in good enough shape to do a route and pace like that, especially on less-than-ideal equipment. First off I would like to say thank you to all who chipped in a little bit to support the MR ALC team last night.

Secondly, I have to say that im partially responsible for holding up the start time last night as i didnt get off of work til 9:30 and had to go home and pick up all the shirts for everyone. Nothing I could do.

Thirdly, I need to mention about the speed. I had to constantly speed up to slow down the front pack of speed demons for 2/3rds of the ride last night. This in turn makes everyone in the back think we are speeding up when not the case. This was why danny went down because he was trying to slow ME down while I was trying to slow YOU IN THE FRONT down so you wouldnt miss the right turn on Del Mar and just in f**king general. I don't like dropping people that don't know where they are. We are a no rida left behind community and it was very difficult to keep it that way last night.

The last 1/3rd of the ride I pretty much conceded to the fact that no matter how many announcements that were made these people were going to be speeding regardless, so I then tried to keep a moderate pace in the middle of the pack out of consideration to newer riders. I don't like dropping newer riders that are inexperienced and may not be in the best of shape and/or also not have rode bikes. That shit is not cool. I want to personally apologize to all of you riders that may have been dropped unintentionally or may have had a bad experience because of the speed. Please do not be soured on this MR ride alone because the speed issue was an anomaly.

So this poses the question for MR rides. What to do when this situation arises again? because it will. To we employ a tough love attitude of if you want to lead the trailer you better not drop yourself. im sure we as riders can do a better job of getting the msg of the music sets the pace to everyone as when there are 300+ ridazz not all of them will hear the announcements. Discuss.

i didnt plan this ride but was more than happy to lug around and extra 80 lbs. for everyones enjoyment. Thank you Zuko & Co. for planning it, we did the best we could after your fall. Advice to the next planners. Use a similar plan that S&S does. 1 in the front that slows ppl down when needed (suck ass responsibility, but necessary as last night suggests) and 1 in the back for support. maybe 2 in the middle for additional support.

I had fun regardless of the logistics and it was good seeing everyone. Danny, suck it up and get back on the horse again cause we gots 545 miles to bike. RIDE ON MOFOS

Yeah it's a vicious cycle (ehe) when some of us hustle up to the front to yell at everyone to slow down, but along the way it naturally ups the average pace...I think the only way to do it is try and enforce a 'everybody behind the trailer' rule or have visually distinctive riders who should be in front at all times like S&S.

Then you have to NOT give out the route - at least nothing halfway specific - so people can't rush ahead.

eyy'all.

The no-fast-no-trash-shorter distances talk, and many other discussions, need to happen outside the board too.

This is obviously an ongoing problem, and I believe partly because those people that are causing problems aren't regular, committed, concerned members of this community (however amorphous it is) and don't visit this site. Or don't care.

Talk to people.

I do believe in the tendency of fear and drama to feed on itself. It would suck if some negative and self-serving assholes caused in-fighting and weakened this badass community. Stay positive, friendly, and lead by example.

By the way, funny story for anyone who knows me. I learned a lesson about independence last night. I I had to pee. So I went to the front, ducked out, and lost everyone...had to ride for a couple hours alone in a foreign land (befit the adventurous nature of Star Wars right?) getting strange looks. (Remember, the love child of Yoda and Leah had on a wig, fake eyelashes, and elf ears) until I finally found my way home.) When I was feeling most lost and close to defeated, I removed my costume (didn't want to attract too much more attention and searched for a place to ask directions. First street I crossed: Dangler. Silliness and hope were restored.

Interesting new territory, Danny. Distance and route might have been fine. Maybe start no later than 10, stop more often.

Thanks everyone for coming out. The costumed especially made my night (lonely as it was!) And it's always great to see people pull off a more difficult ride together, especially when they never knew they could!

The best way to slow down faster riders = tractor beams. Duh.

Seriously though. I remember when people started complaining about the kids who went to shows just to mosh. That was a big thing when I was growing up. Everybody I knew complained that "those guys" were ruining the scene and that they didn't care about the music and they only came out to beat on each other.

Well, those guys are now probably baggage handlers at LAX with 4 kids and a vicious alimony payment. Yet "the scene" lives on. Point is, you can complain about meatheads till you're blue in the face. They'll always be there in a group this large. The trick is to continually evolve and eventually they lose interest.

WOW! I must be riding in a parallel universe.
I didn't see any accidents or incidents with cops.

Must be the same ride though cause like everyone says it was long and fast. I didn't mind except for the lateness.
Whittier Narrows (605 & 60FWY) at 1:30AM ???
Then 20 miles back home and I had to teach a class at 9AM. Showed up at 10.

I loved going to new towns. It gets boring to do the same circle around downtown & Hollywood every time. Local rides get fast too for newbies every time we have long straight stretches.

My suggestions:
- Meet at 9 and really start at 10. No exceptions not even for the music trailer (GASP!!!) and VIPs
- Make the rides more zigzaggy. There is absolutely NO WAY to keep some people at 8mph on 4 mile straightaways. Let them lose some turns and then they'll learn to follow the bikes that know the route. How come S+S rides never get hijacked ? The organizers are always up front and the routes are too complicated to "guess".
- If it's past midnight start heading back. Don't take the group further away from the starting point.

Or otherwise... embrace the chaos. So what if it's long and painful? On my first ride with MR I had MTB. I couldn't keep up. I had to walk it up the hills. I didn't curse the organizers. I swore I'd get better at it and come back.

Really late fast and long rides is the best way to maintain the 5 to 1 guys to gals ratio.

Four hours of getting supplies, revisiting high school chemistry and babysitting a bubbling bottle of chemicals, only to be defeated by textured stucco. I bet Emperor Palpatine never had to deal with that shit.

It's probably just as well. At the speed the ride was going, I would have had to let the thing go after a couple miles anyway. Hydrogen Death Star Balloons are a much better idea in principle than in practice. And they're not even a very good idea in principle...

You know, simply stopping at intersections now and then -- and letting some/most of the group catch up -- would probably be helpful in the future. Seemed like we hardly did that at all last night (esp. in proportion to the distance we covered), at least not in the last half of the ride.

....

But I was riding with a relative newbie last night (he used to ride a lot, but probably hasn't been on a bike but once in the last five years), and while he had a little trouble keeping up towards the end, he was totally into it and is definitely coming back. So let's not act like the ride completely turned off ALL newcomers.

How about this;
Stage a crash at the front when it's evident the ride's about to get hijacked.
Except equip both crash bikes and the volunteers with smoke canisters, flame-retardant, and pyrotech-kits.

The aim is to shock the audience with what might happen if tires rub in a speed contest.
Then wait ten minutes, get back to reality and scream, "PSYCHE!!!", through a megaphone.

I think I may have been one of the 'speedy' people up front, and i feel badly that it seems to have been such a big problem. Of course there's a but:

1) in SD, our music trailer is where it is--it doesn't set the pace, and we didn't know to stay behind the trailer--would it ruin the spoke card to put that info on?

2) we were playing sprint tag at the front, and not intending to "hijack" the ride; we stopped when we were asked, we slowed down when the line got too spread out, and were usually speeding to get to a bathroom or liquor store stop--of which there were much too few. a few times, we did try to help stop the ride so that people could re-group/catch up, but a wave of LA riders went past us, and since we didn't know where we were or where we were going, we started riding again.

3) we had a two hour drive ahead of us and given the late start, wanted to get back to our cars to get home. my friend (the blond who crashed at the corner with ian) is a newbie to bikes--only riding two months--and she was getting increasingly nervous that we were out in the middle of nowhere at 1 am with unbelievably few people who knew a) where we were or b) how to get back to our cars. of course when we finally hit chavez we mashed it on in!
if this isn't how you want your rides to go, be considerate of people who might want to be a midnight rida, but not a 3 am rida and a 5 am driva... give people "the way back" routes/maps/alternatives so they can cut out rather than speed up the rest of the ride.

4) we were yelled at quite angrily to slow down going UP hill towards a stop light (at which we were told (and intended) to stop). Yep, we were yelled at for going fast up a hill.. On the LA-SD ride, we all rode at our own pace, and then we stopped to re-group. It's just too difficult on a 30 mile ride with smooth straight-aways or hills to ride your brakes. With longer rides and this many people, it may be much better to just have more stops for re-grouping and let people follow a their own pace in-between.

again, sorry to have added to the speed problem last night--we had a blast and we adore your faces and nice smooth streets.

I hope everyone injured, sore or jailed, heals fast and justice is served.

It was freaking long, but it was some smooth riding and great locations.

The trash is embarrassing and sad. PICK UP YOUR JUNK

We need more words of encouragement, clear and succinct at the beginning and at stops:

-Pick up your trash
-Ride straight
-Stay behind the music trailer
-Help each other

Veteran Ridazz, sorry, but many don't know many common sensibilities of riding, so you need to be examples of how to do it right. And or put it on the spoke cards. the $1 donation is worth it. Also: Call people out. You see a fool being a fool, call him on it.

There will be many more newbies coming.
Last night showed us what can happen, lets prepare for the next with the lessons we learned.

Ride On!

"These rides will be the first group rides for MOST people. Keep them slow, keep them local. I think the trash left behind, the crashes and incidents ARE a direct reflection of the current state of Midnight Ridazz. I find it sad. It's not what it was, it's not how it should be. "

Agree with Dak , there is quite few of us that have rode on MR for a while and had been involved with hosting some of the biggest MR rides and it has changed a bit .There is not that feeling of appeal to lure new riders because you expect a fun, decent paced ride that will work for all.I have not even been attending or taking new riders like I used to since I dont know what to expect anymore.
I was just talking about that with a few of "old school" MR riders and agreed that its not as fun as it used to be.Many of us dont show up any more because of it.Its also noticeable on the low numbers that turn out.Having 1000-1500 riders was not so bad.I know many had an issue with that but there was a kick ass feeling riding thru LA streets with such a melting pot of people. Not just the hard core 24/7 riders.
I love, fucken love MR...I hope we work it out and I hope I get to ride again with all you fuckers that I miss.Just like the old days.

another thing. THE RIDE SHOULD START ON TIME, meaning no later than 10pm. all fundraising should occur between 9:30 - 10pm or during liquore store breaks.

Talking about newbies...starting on time...and speed...

I had some newbies with me 1-2 weeks ago at the Hollywood Ridazz. Not particularly young or sporty. The types that ride twice a year on the Venice boardwalk and that's it. They came with MTBs and knotty tires. You know what their main complaint was?

- Long waits standing around doing nothing. Not enough riding.

Lance, Jeff,

chill...

you know I make you and a great amount of our group the exception. you were not the whinners, you were not complaining about the rides inefficiency or lack of amusement. I too was surprised at how far we went east of DTLA. I didn't know where i was until i saw a montebello cop car (just before the incident: cop car vs. bike). I do have to say that danny has these far fetched ideas for the rides sometimes. he tends to think that everyone can endure these long routes and sometimes he's wrong and you end up with frustrated, bored, and exhausted riders that feel like they've been put through a gang hazing initiation ritual.

what Veloz means is that he still enjoys himself even if there long rides. after all it's a workout. I have helped danny w/ some rides and i do believe we the planners can take some of the blame in the ride being to long. it's true sometimes he wants to cram a lot in one ride... but he means well. he does it hoping you'll all be as excited as we were during the scouting of the route. I too didn't know it was going to be epically long. but the point here is safety first and foremost. The lack of responsible safety by a few speedy speedsters resulted in his injury. and yes I also believe that if you come to a ride you follow that simple protocol to follow the trailer stay a little ahead of the trailer or the ride leader, in the case one of the planners or the team of planners. And the trash, please take it with you for later disposal if no trash recepticals are in sight.

all I know is my knees hurt like hell and my day today was very difficult because despite the fact that I left 'early' I still didn't get home till almost 4am, exausted, famished (but too tired and irritated to eat), and generally not happy.

not cool.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.. you wanna go fast and into the super unknown?? there's rides for that. tthey are not midnight ridazz 2nd friday of the month.

the other thing I wanna say is - WE HAVE A MEGAPHONE - LETS USE IT to make announcements before we leave stops such as "PICK UP YOUR SHIT!" and "STAY BEHIND THE MUSIC TRAILOR!"

Danny - I appreciate all the work you put into this ride for real - just wish I woulda been warned because I probably wouldn't have gone - I was wanting to say hi to some friends, ride for a bit, cut out and make it home and in bed by 2 am. my day today was too busy for a ride like last nights..

and I hope you get better REALLY FAST!!!!!! find a root called Solomon Seal and make a tea witth it.. itt aids in healing bones and stuff... email me if you want more info about that..

The way we keep Forge & Gorge together (and it works 100% + it's a fast ride) is only 1 or 2 people know the route, and they set the pace. Easy.

Alternatively, would it be so bad if the entire group didn't show up at the stops at the same time (it would deffinitely cut down on the wait time)? Veteran ridazz, if you think the ride is going too fast then holler at some other vets around you, form up and slow down. People will glob onto you. There's so many music systems now that even if we spread the group out into 4-5 sub groups everyone still gets the dog with all the toppings.

This worked really well at the last S&S ride. We had a route slip, we had music and we could care less about keeping up with the rest; and that attracted other riders. Be proud to really define a gap within the group; it allows for some breathing room and it would pro'lly reduce crashes by increasing the buffer zone. I've never seen a rider better at this than laharr, go find laharr and ride with him.

First of all a BIG thanks goes out to Danny, Jared, and all the rest that put all their time and energy into this ride. Your effort is much appreciated. Danny, wish you the best and hoping for a speedy recovery.

Many things went right with this ride yet no one really acknowledge it. For example all the BMXrs were riding like the rest of us. They took their jumps and stunts away from other ridazz. Props go out to them for not making any drama with the other ridazz. I also liked seeing people stopping to help for each mechanical problem I saw someone have. Each time I asked if there was help needed, they said they were on it. I never saw one person stranded alone. Yeah these were issues not long ago.

One issue that keeps coming up on this thread is the length of the ride. Talking to Danny last night, he said the route was 24 miles long. I would say this is in the range of a normal MR second Friday ride. The extra length came from hijackers. Not much someone can do to stop the speeders and the hijackers. I certainly don't want to be the one policing this issue. I say we just let the guys that want to mash go. Let them ride as fast as they want and stop trying to slow them down. If the get lost, they only have themselves to blame. Peeps behind them, the same thing, it's their fault for following the faster ridazz and not following the ride. Have the music trailer set the pace. Anyone in the front is on their own.

Another thing that keeps coming up is the trashing of the stops we make. On the first liquor stop, it took me a minute or two to find the trashcan. Why don't we just grab the trash can where we roll into and set the thing in the middle of the parking lot? It would be easy to find and people will more likely put the trash where it belongs. Then we just set the trashcan back when we roll out.

Personally, other than the crashes, I thought the ride was awesome. I didn't learn about the po po incident until the next day. Riding east was an excellent choice and was fun rolling to a different area. The stops were spaced out correctly as was the time spent at them. The second stop could have been stopped a bit earlier, but that's a minor complaint. What would be a good idea is announce the miles of the ride on the thread so that people know somewhat to expect.

Thank you for coming to this ride, although we had some issues with it i think we can all learn from our experiences and make Midnight Ridazz something more positive and fun, I've read all of your comments. All valid points and opinions that I will take into concid,

I had a great ride. Even after my fall, I had people with me. I wasn't left behind, I understand some of you were, for that I offer my apologies. This is now how we roll, I'm sure on most rides I dont plan you all have seen people like Spook and myself cork, and hold up the back, speed to the front and do it again, People like Gary trying to keep the back from not dropping into oblivion and sprinting to the start to tell us to slow the fuck down, I was sprinting with the SD ridazz to the first stop only to make sure no one passed it up, they helped me make everyone turn into the parking lot, so thanx
I spend the rest of the ride trying to keep a slower pace, sprinting to the start several times to slow the pace down, I tried and failed at stopping the ride right before the right turn on Del Mar, I stopped the first bunch but the riders behind us went right around us and continued on valley, this bunch was not leading the ride and did not know to turn on Del Mar. On Del Mar I saw a few people fall, i wanted to regroup but some riders went down del mar, I had an issue with this cause If someone is down, we should stop, three people went down at the corner. and riders were passing them by, This is where i almost lost my voice and a few yards up this is where I fell. I'm ok though. I heard some people got lost and dropped, I don't know anything after this point since , I was standing on the side walk evaluating my sich,

The route is 25 miles and the inclination did not go above 200 feet in two miles, the flatest route I've ever done, route slips were handed out at the start, free of charge, as far as newbees are concerned, mayuko a newbee out of LBC was there with me after I fell and was
attending to me. I want a do over, same route, as soon as i heal up

I thought the ride was excellent. The roads were smooth.
I don't live and die on my bike. I ride when I can. Last night I gave up the gears for a single speed. It was a damn good ride.

Danny... speedy recovery!

Leave no trace. I fully agree. I don't think a trash barge is necessary if we all just pick up after our selves. Its not that hard. quit being a lazyass. Thank you for offering, but I am committed to leaving my world a better place.

I may not know you all by face or name, but when I need help finding someone in charge of a ride, it would be good to be able to find you. Knowing who is in charge.. like the wookie...I can find the wookie. Theres 500 people here... where are you? We should tie a balloon to you

My only gripe about the ride is the retard at whittier narrows lighting fireworks. You're a total inconsiderate asshole.
Please think before you act. We left the ride because of you. You do not shoot fireworks over dry brush. Thats a fucking comminity resource and a habitat for all sorts of wildlife. Totally rude.

I confess: there were times on this ride that I rode fast. Mostly after the last stop when I realized it was nearly 2am and I was 15 miles from home. At that point I thought most everybody knew the way home so I just got on my way (with a bunch of others).

As it was I got home at 3am and got to bed at 4am. I'd been up since 6:30 that morning and put in a full day at work. That's a long day for an old dude like me.

I'm not blaming or pointing fingers, but believe it or not, there were times when the rides started on time and the stops weren't so lengthy, unless it was an end stop.

Thanks to Danny, Hungerford, etc.. for a rad ride.

I would like to volunteer for scouting some North & South destinations. Who's coming with me!?

Maybe some lengthy bike path sections are in order.

I've already chimed in on the Route (Awesome, but not for a regular Midnight Ridazz). So I wanted to touch on the trash issue.

Recycling Trailer: MAKE IT HAPPEN. If you want to collect recycling, do it. Make a trailer, collect it, etc. Keep the cash, if you want.

Picking Up Trash. I've given up cleaning up after people, I ignore it now, because I have to let that shit go. If, you are on a camping trip with me, you know what I have to say about trash. You make it, You take it home with you. Most people get it, some people don't. The fact is the fuckers that leave their trash behind are the same fuckers that throw their trash out of their car windows while driving down the street. They're the same fuckers that drop their losing lottery tickets on the sidewalk in front of their liquor stores. They're the same fuckers that don't pick the shit up left behind by their stupid pitbull. They're the same fuckers that leave their trash on the tables after eating at In n Out. They're the same fuckers that clean up after themselves, ever. It's seriously like changing the world, people are too lazy to do it. And if it doesn't affect them directly or immediately, they don't care.

Step Up People, and call them on their shit.
