Saturday April 12 2008,
Everyone dresses as their favorite 8-bit video game and we ride to Universal Studios (the location of the Nintendo World Video Game Championships in the 1989 film The Wizard). Of course we will have a soundtrack of 8-bit video game music to pedal along with. Activities will involve DS group gaming and possibly use of an original NES with power pad and zapper. Anyone with ideas is strongly encouraged to join the discussion.
You beat me to it. I've been secretly planning this ride in my head, but was planning to wait for the announcement if the I Am 8-Bit art show was going to be held again this year.
I had started building up a soundtrack of video game music and 8-bit music artists inspired by games. I used to be really into gaming growing up, and currently I work as a 3D artist in the video game industry.
If you wanted to collaborate my e-mail is 7 p i x e l s @ g m a i l . c o m
Hell yes! All collaboration is welcome! Shall we set up some sort of file sharing so people can pitch in their music for the ride? Does anyone have route ideas? So far the only thing I've settled on is that we'll stop at universal.
and dont you need a wireless network to play ds against ds without a patch cable or however the old gameboys used to work? the route needs wireless hotspots!
I don't know if this is 8 bit, but i have all of the Road Rash 2 music (except Hawaii) on MP3 because, i'm as bad as RBI. I think each is around 3 minutes long.
Just in: I see from Wikipedia, that this was 16 bit. Maybe you only play half of it.
If you still want it, i can put it on my idisk for the taking.
For a router you can use a regular home router and make a battery pack for it. It doesn't take much. A small 12 volt pack made from AA batteries would work.
For wireless DS play you do not need a router or anything. If you want to play people in china, yes, but if we are all with in a 100ft of each other, we should be okay!
Depending on the condition of the handlebar controls, I might manage a few EPIC games of Paperboy.
I once almost got kicked out of Chuck E. Cheese's on my own frickin birthday because I beat Paperboy twice on one token. I guess the other kids didnt appreciate me bogarting the machine for several hours.
Well folks, the 4-bit ride (scouting for 8-bit) was tonight and it was way WAY fun! Props to Brando, Fixion, and Mike for participating but the biggest props go to Brando for coming up with such a cool route. We've got some great stops along the way and the ride is really smooth if you don't count the evil hill that city walk rests atop. Even if you have to walk it, making it up that hateful hill is sure worth it on the way back down! A descent that starts with a parking structure corkscrew is crazy fun! Stay tuned, the route will be posted soon. It's about 20 miles round trip, starting and ending at North Hollywood Park.
Does anyone have a decent soundsystem that they'd be willing to contribute to this ride? Our hookup fell through and it would be cool to have some loud 8-bit tunes to ride with.
I just wanted to ad that their are bike lanes for most of the route. Including a whole bike path to ourselves, all the way to victory.
I want to second the sound system proposition.....
anyone that can bring a bigger sound system, would be a God
to us... We need LOUD 8-bit music!!
The hill up to universal is not that bad. We will rest beforehand and then walk up. If you have gears you may be able to ride up. Ryan was able to, but us single speeders and fixies were walking. We only need to walk up half way...it's a 2 minute walk.
Like Ryan said, their is a killer rest stop at the top... and coming back down is awesome..
That downhill is definitely cool but just watch out for those palm trees in that island at the bottom... yell out for a brake check and a heads up to the fixies.
"That downhill is definitely cool but just watch out for those palm trees in that island at the bottom... yell out for a brake check and a heads up to the fixies."
yeah, y'all keep your heads on straight when coming down that hill. We'd all prefer not to have any accidents on this ride.
Also, we don't want anyone to feel left out so we're planning to make a couple of cars with bike racks available at the bottom of the hill to shuttle those who either cannot or do not wish to climb the hill on their own... That means you, Bowser.
My vehicle is officially available... I can take three bikes +riders each trip. I will have it parked at the subway station across the street waiting....
Our people are currently in negotiations with Harry's people on securing big box sounds for this event. Negotiations are tense! Will keep you posted once we reach a settlement.
THnak you for this ride mate! I had a brilent tim an I thimk the securtyu at Unversty Wa;lk ar wanlers I want to go bacl and kicl those blocs asses!!! Who os with me??? Thpse motjher fuckers are cunts!!!
To all that put this ride together tonite, awesome ride man! Had a blast and loved the route. It's great cruising through streets where we're welcomed. Thought that just about everyone was giving us a thumbs up. All except the a holes at Universal Catwalk. Like Harry said, we got to go back and show them whasup.
Great meeting all the peeps behind 8 bit and the passion ride. Look forward to rolling with you guys this summer.
Sorry bout Harry.... He gets carried away I guess. He's cool.
LOL.... holy crap Harry is gone! I've never seen him type like that... he didn't even use any html stuff.... signs of a good time.
Those security guys at Citywalk are jerks. One time one of the Cruz with Us rides made it up there and we were able to walk w/ our bikes through Citywalk... the security guys were all freaking out but there was already too many of us walking in so they let us go. The Sheriff's deputies were just like whatever... said hi and everything..... it's just those damn security guards.
What another epic Ride. Another spectacular ride. I am going to miss ya guys. :-P My only complaint last night was that City walk bull shit and it also included the sherifs and CHP besides the rent-a-cops. WTF?
But the race down the spiral ramp and the hill out of city walk was garly! I bet those motorists were fucking confused as hell as to what was going on. I definatley would go back just to race down that spiral again even if it meant getting harassed by the security.
Again, fantastic feaking job on this ride!
YAY! Thanks to everyone who came last night! Special thanks to Harry for bringing out the system and pedaling it all the way up the gnarly hill! Also, special thanks to Richie for hoisting the party flag and flying it from the top of the tall bike all the way! Tarsis (sp?) thanks for giving my hat back!
I agree re: the cops/security. I got separated from you guys before the parking structure because a few of us were trying to divert some CHP dudes and then we ended up dealing with some angry security after that. What the fuck is their problem? They have bike racks up there! I propose that we stage a "use the bike racks" ride to Universal in which we all race for the bike rack next to the parking structure by the front entrance (we went the back way last night) and immediately lock them to the rack. We'll create a giant mesh of bikes locked to bikes locked to bikes, locked to the bike rack. Then we'll see if they want to continue bitching at us for using the bike rack that they have installed for... bikes! That way we'll also be right by the entrance to the parking structure with the cork screw so we can make that the start of our departure/retreat route.
P.S. I also need to give super special thanks to josh and mike for letting us crash at their place last night. That was an awesome end to a fun night.... but damn did I ever get fucked up on that vodka. You know it was a great ride when you wake up the next morning wondering where you are and whose tent you're in.
Speaking of the tent, sorry I didn't break it down before leaving, but I was really struggling just to get my bearings and stay on my feet.
Coming down the GIANT Universal Hill through the long lane of traffic with Harry letting the corporate assholes hear it over the sound system, behind the tall bike AND everyone made it to regroup -- epic!
Peace, Soultrain - come back and ride. You'll always have a place with our Ridazz.
I just finished posting the pix from the ride. I had a fucking blast, thanks to everyone who came out. Special thanks to Ryan, Brando, and Tim for putting together and organizing the ride and Harry for the kickass sound system/security guard harasser. Special fuck yous to the security guards at Universal City Walk who have no sense of humor and can't tell the difference between violent thugs and a group of bikers out having a good time. Mad props to everyone for making our escape down the hill weaving through packed traffic - my adrenaline was pumping after that one! Thanks to Little Mike for letting us come back to his place and hook the Nintendo up afterwards. It made lugging it around on the ride all worth it. Last but not least thanks to Soultrain for coming out on one last ride before leaving us. We'll miss you!
I literally just woke up!!! it's f-ing HOT!!.........
Harry, thanks man!! Soultrain, we WILL miss you. I'm planning a trip up to frisco to ride with you and chill.....maybe a ride to frisco??? User1, it was a pleasure to finally meet you..
I had a great time last night!!!
Ryan, "100 PROOF" Vodka!! THE SAME GLASS BOTTLE THAT DIDN'T BREAK WHEN I CRASHED INTO THAT DUDE AND IT FELL OUT ONTO THE STREET....HAHAHAHAHA!!
A HUGE thanks to everyone that came...
FYI, the Second edition of "the Passion of the Bike" ride will be in July, so check it out and pass it on. It's already posted on the site..
