So this year we will be seeing the 100th MR ride. Right now we are at #93 correct? Anybody got any good ideas for this ride? I was thinking maybe taking it back old school. LIke the first MR ride. Meeting up in Echo Park where it all started.
I always envisioned "SteamPunk" in the literal sense of Back To The Future: Part 3.
Especially with the high-speed, steam-locomotive and Doc Brown's .30-30 with the brass sniper-scope.
Ah, well, shows how little I know, I suppose. I've only met two steampunks "in the wild," and both were white males with active fantasy lives and a penchant for welding. "Pasty" is probably a bit pejorative, but chalk that up to poetic license...
Should I inaccurately pigeonhole anybody else while I'm at it?
Hey now, I'm not gonna hate on welding. I mean, if I did that, I'd probably find myself hunted down by a pack of rabid tallbikes. Welding is actually the part of steampunk that I find cool.
Back on topic, the future/past ride could kick plenty of ass, but regardless of the theme, it would be awesome to turn the 100th ride into something really spectacular - more than just a "let's all dress up and ride somewhere (with a cool playlist)" kind of ride.
Since I don't have many recent points for comparison (having been out of town the last couple years) I'm thinking of something like the Cult Ride (#18), which had four or five stops for street theater, a bike U.F.O., and an awesome afterparty. That was Bikesummer, so they probably had some f.u.n.ding for all the F.U.N. But of course, the Wild West Ride put on by the Westsidazz around that same time was, like, awesome squared, with its freakbike rodeo, tallbike hanging, secret hideout, etc., and I think that was entirely a labor of love, without access to the bikesummer moneybags. Point being, we have a community full of Masters of Making It Happen, and it would be great for MR100 to bring all those talents to bear.
And naturally, if anyone is interested in planning a particularly massive spectacle, I'd be righteously psyched to lend a hand in making it spectacular. Do let me know. (nsnider at the gmail)
it starts at 8 or 9 pm and rides through the night. Pre post the route and have times when we will be at certain locations, so people can pick it up at certain times and know when they will get to where they want to get off the ride and take off on there own way. People at the beginning of the ride, get a special ticket or something, and those that make it all the way through the hundred mile ride, get a special 100mile midnight ridazz ride spoke card.
This still has to be a mid pace midnight ridazz party type. Party all night. 100 ride celebration.
Pace yourself with the party favors, we are doing it all night.
I totally winged it, but something like this maybe?
Try to start at the outskirts of a METRO rail station. Even at the end of the Orange line might be cool, then ride east through Pasadena and down....
that is good, but what about just going through neighborhoods in LA central. It could easily cover a 100 miles, just going up and down and across neighborhoods in LA
Sexy, I love ya, but there's no adventure in that. It's a boring way to meet the 100 mile quota; it's cartographical masturbation.
MR has been a lot of places over the course of 100 rides. I think this is a great opportunity to sumarize that All City growth. What better way than redefining and expanding the boundaries of what a group ride can be and where it can go.
Another possibility is a meetup ride like the Toy Rides, where people converge from all over L.A., then ride together as a group. My thought is that a whole century might be pretty intimidating for the more casual rida. Or me, for that matter.
Eric Hair, I don't think that route would be a good idea. Going up Palos Verdes at night, 50 miles into an 85 mile ride with a bunch of newbies would be pretty disastrous IMO.
A similar route, trying to stay closer to public transit. Initial loop for the meek. Another bailout opportunity in Long Beach. Entirety of both loops for the crazies. Parks and beaches to stop at along the way. 103 miles (could easily be trimmed down to 100).
I have to admit I have never ridden most of this, so I have no clue if it is a good idea. Probably not.
Like I said, probably a bad idea. It's just a sketch of a possible route. People who are more familiar with riding through the various areas could push it onto better roads between now and then. Whenever then is. Assuming this ride idea will ever happen. Which it probably won't.
The stops on an MR ride should usually equal roughly about 5 miles. This helps us regain control of 500+ and helps us from leaving straggling ridazz behind. Restrooms should be considered for our girls too. I just cant see an MR century being practicle for this type of ride. How bout just a Birthday Ride? Dress as anthing B-day related. The end point will have Vspangle pop out of a big cake and sing Happybday ala Marilyn Monroe.
No problem: just have stops at mile 5 and mile 10, and then at mile 10 the ride forks off into two groups: the Easy group, which loops back to the start (stopping every 5 miles or so), and the Century group, who continue on with the route (stopping every 15 or 20 miles or so).
tonight around 8pm in little tokyo while eating at mr ramen, liz and i saw not one, but three, three twenty something asians dressed as steampunks. it must have been a steampunk parade.
How core elite? Super double triple core elite with sprinkles.
Here's another way to do it: century riders start earlier in the day and ride the first eighty or so miles, with mile 80 being the start for the night ride. Then everybody rides together--yay, togetherness--to the finish, and there's a big, togethery afterparty where everybody celebrates togetherness together, and handshakes and hugs and frottage abound. How's that?
PC, I like that idea, of having the century lead into the shorter ride, instead of the other way 'round. That way, the shorter ride wouldn't just feel like a send-off for the century, and the centurions wouldn't have to worry that they're missing out on the party.
But then, when would the century have to start in order to make sure the rides are able to meet up? 5pm?... 3pm?
I would say all idea whatever we decide on, should be based on fun. If you can't do a century and keep it fun, then maybe think of something else. KEEP IT FUN, its a midnight ridazz ride
I'm also down with PC's suggestion. That way the full century people can wind down at the end and get faced rather than attempting to start off that way. (oh... and the part about frottage)
okay lets think about it. 2nd friday of each month is a MR ride. but we also have to keep in mind with the cruzz with us rides because they are part of the MR rides. so im guess sometime around september?
Waitaminute, since the last Hollywood Ridazz got an "official" number too, couldn't that potentially move up the timeline if it continues? Are the H'wood Ridazz "made?" If so, then (taking a look at the calendar) the numbering of future rides would look like this:
May
#94 - Cw/U Stuffed animal ride
June
#95 - Alphabet soup
#96 - undetermined H'wood Ridazz
#97 - undetermined Cw/U
July
#98 - Grateful dead ride
#99 - undetermined H'wood Ridazz
#100 - undetermined Cw/U
August
#101 - Pillowfight Ride 2
September
#WTF happened to #100?
And even without the H'wood Ridazz adding to the count, #100 would actually be the Cruz With Us ride at the end of August. The 2nd-Friday rides would all be odd numbers and Cruz w/ Us would all be even, assuming nothing else steps in to throw things off.
Maybe the 2nd Friday in Sept. can be set as the "official" #100, and the other numbers can be shuffled around just for the hell of it. Or would this lead to some kind of coup?
Also, what's with the "end less: summer" item on the calendar and its vague admonition to "save the datezz" for the 2nd Saturday and Sunday in Sept? Is it gonna be fun, or something?
I might get shouted down for this or called an elitist, purist, or worse, but I think if we're talking about the 100th ride, it should really be the 100th second Friday ride. It seems a little arbitrary otherwise. Nothing against any of those other rides, in fact I was on several of them. Just felt I had to say that.
sorry if I haven't been part of this bike scene as long as you have, but I've not been part of an underwear ride.
there's no need to be terse or overly critical. if you're gonna be overly critical, pull out some constructive criticism out of your bony ass. for example, exercise and eat more so you're not so skinny and bitter.
as if there's never been a repeat of a themed ride
i was not trying to be an asshole. and i dont appreciate what you said about me being so skinny. ive never talked to you before and what you posted up makes me never wanna talk to you. ive actually thought about saying hi to you before because i always see you at the rides, but now seeing what kind of person you are, makes me glad i never did.
I think this is fantastic idea, and I'm all about celebrating the 100th ride, but...
...I'm still stuck on Eric Hair using the phrase "cartographical masturbation." The genius and poetic license (licentiousness?) truly blows me. Away, I mean.
I have no clue how the first one was organized, but for those that have an issue with "repeating" rides, I'm sure we can come up w/ a totally different aspect of it to keep you on the edge of your seat.
As if the "joining up with a crew on your side of town and wearing super cool shit" part of it isn't cool enough.
I need to dump out the following out of my brain before I can allow myself to fall asleep:
- the movie ends in Coney Island, therefore we have to include a ferris wheel into the ride
- the item above therefore requires that this somehow becomes a ride from Silver Lake to the Santa Monica Pier
- many subways in the movie, therefore the Metro Rail is heavily suggested as a way to get to the ride itself (and therefore probably scaring the heck out of whatever passengers may be riding at the time when you get on w/ your bike crew, face painted the same way, clothing ripped in the same style, etc)
- at stops during the ride, Warrior crews will have to battle each other in future Olympic events such as group jumprope and dance battles and bike-tug-of-war and rooftop soccer and _____
- only cardboard baseball bats allowed (please?)
come on, whats more grand than that!?!?! people will be super-excited to train for it, and riding a PARTY CENTURY, SLOW AND LOW, HAS NEVER BEEN DONE!
Thats the kind of thing that makes riders from other cities jealous, then they move here! THATS WORLD CLASS RIDAZZ STYLE! DO IT!!!!
just an idea: the costume theme can be "dress from your favorite century" and people can band together and dress alike...Cubcamp could be the 15th c. for example and we'd all dress like Shakespeares!...
This would be November 14th, correct?
IF WE PLAN IT NOW, PEOPLE WILL GET INTO IT!
I personally would love to plan but I am out of town for the next 4 months...Plan it! Please!!!!
i dont think doing a century for a MR ride is a good idea as it will take for fucking ever for most ridazz due to the number of stops that will be needed to complete it, and not to mention the various fitness levels of ridazz in general.
If this is done, i predict that there will be no more than 20 ppl left when this ride ends at 7am the next morning.
getting home after a crank mob at 6 is brutal enough and that mileage is no where near what is being proposed here.
i just don't see it being able to be pulled off successfully.
We can always have a 20 mile cut off point for those who want to leave early. ( Perhaps loop it back to the start by mile 20?) The rest can carry on the CENTURY!
The king is correct on this. You'll have very few peeps at the end of this ride. Also you'll have very few peeps game to even think about doing this. He was somewhat wrong on the time and was being rather generous about this ride being over at 7am, imho. I'd say it would take at least 12 hours for some, if not most of the peeps to finish this.
Let's think of something that's more inclusive. The warrior ride sounds awesome and I think is the best idea so far. So what if it's been done before. There's alot of peeps that have never done the ride. Plus if it's a awesome theme, then it deserves a repeat. I would be just as happy falling in love with a ride the second time around, as I did the first time!
Why doesn't each side (West side, East Side, Vally peeps, an so on) each clan together. We could then battle it out on the ride with water guns, balloons, anything else that will not cause to much bodily harm. The final show down could be at Pan Pacific. Winner takes all... All of what? How the fuck should I know?
The Warriors ride concept has been done TWICE - Warriors Ride AND The Mother Of All Rides...YAWN,,,

Wait, November? September 12th, I thought... At least, that would be closest to the "official" 100, for whatever that's worth.
I think PC's version of the century is the best so far. Do a century that starts in the afternoon, leading into a party ride that starts at the usual time and ending in one massive afterparty. A party century that started at 11pm would be a blast with a relatively small, relatively dedicated group. With the typical contingent of 300 leisure ridazz, it would probably be disastrous. It would be natural selection in action*. It would leave a ton of people dropped, exhausted and pissed off.
The Warriors Ride would kick some ass, but that ass has already been kicked. Nothing wrong with having a theme ride where we divide into factions and battle it out, but why recycle a movie that's already had it's day?
How about we combine the "dress as your favorite century" idea with the Warriors theme and hold a battle of the centuries? The ridazz who do the full 100-mile century beforehand would get some kind of special place in the melee. And there could still be a party. And frottage.
Anyway, that's my suggestion.
*which reminds me... Feb 12, 2009 is Charles Darwin's 200th birthday. We should totally do an Evolution Ride.
how about you think about what midnight ridazz is..........????
a game of hide and go seek? been done a couple of times, but that not really midnight ridazz......
a roadie century..? oh yeah, that is midnight ridazz, fer sure
a ride around the city at night, viewing the treasures that the city behold, enjoying the various people that have come out to the ride and connect with them, leave no rida behind, all under some silly theme That is what Midnight Ridazz is to me, and has been for many of the rides
Why not have the 100th ride, be a midnight ridazz ride,
I think there have been many century rides much larger than we could muster even here. Perhaps "world's latest century" or "world's drunkest century"? We've got to play off our strengths here...
Also, I didn't know that the Mother of All Rides did the battle theme too. That makes the whole battle thing a little less attractive. But Battle of the Centuries has such a nice ring to it!
Not to burst any bubbles, but there are many large group centuries that have happened every year. Tour de Palm Springs had 5-10,000 entries and i'm positive at least half did the century. On the Aids LifeCyle ride, Day 2 was approx. 108 miles and all but about 200 of the 2500 riders didn't finish it. I would love for us to be the largest, but i'm guessing it will be pretty hard to obtain the new title. But i'll be there to try.
I also renew my support for PC's early start, with "final lap" 10pm join-up for the timid, idea.
I also sort of liked that idea someone had of retracing a bunch of old routes in succession, adding up to 100 miles. But they would have to be really good routes.
[Warriors are cool and all, but the 100th shouldn't have a recycled theme. No way.]
Someone head up the Beginning of the Century ride, in the afternoon. That's all there is to it, MAKE IT HAPPEN.
It's ridiculous to think that the average Midnight Rida is going to bother an attempt at a century. There will be two rides, End of the Century (E.o.t.C.) & Beginning of a Century (B.o.t.C.). The End of the Century will start at the usual time, 10pm. The Beginning of a Century ride will start appropriately the afternoon before and their last 15-20 miles will be with the rest of MR. B.o.t.C. Whoever is plotting the route for the B.o.t.C. should post the route & approximate times so people can join up to do metric centuries, etc.
We're making it happen. We just need to figure out which DAY MR#100 is. I'm with Mr. Rollers, I think it should be the 100th Second Friday Ridazz.
A century comprised of five 20-mile routes that reach out in all directions. There's a continuous "base" party, which begins at 5pm and moves around via a series of shorter rides to meet each group at a new location as they return. People who only want to ride 20 miles can pick which route to do. People who want to do a century can do all the routes. People who want to do some intermediate distance can mix and match, party for a cycle or two and head back out for another, etc.
I don't know what the theme would be. A Ridazz Olympiad with five interlocking routes? The Captain Planet century, where each loop retrieves some elemental artifact, and all of them are combined in some dorky fashion at the end (Earth! Fire! etc...)?
It may be "cartographic masturbation," but it'll be F.U.N. And seeing as how this whole "100" business is basically an exercise in numerological masturbation to begin with, I hardly think most people will mind. Think of it as a great big cartographic/numerological group grope.
We should definitely hold a party in celebration of the 100th 2nd-Friday ride which would be, y'know, sometime in the year 2012... But this is about holding a party in celebration of our arbitrary numbering scheme reaching the triple digits. I mean, nobody really cared that the 21st century technically began on Jan 1, 2001. People got psyched about 2000 because, dude, check it out - three zeros!
What about having an all day Party at the epi-center (like the hub) and have 5 rides that go 10 miles out and 10 miles back (like spokes). But each ride is one after another. So, after you finish one ride, you are right back at the party. Hang out, Drink, refuel etc. then go out and do another spoke/ride. Then, you are back at the party again. This way everyone can do all the spokes/rides or just one or two, and you always come back to the party!!!!
From the calendar entry, it like the Scoops Ride was a Hollywood Ridazz concoction.
Since there is already some uncertainty about when and whether the Hollywood Ridazz take up an "official" number, there's not really any way to know ahead of time which one will be number 100, unless someone just up and decides to make it happen by "reserving" #100 in advance.
