do any ridazz play an instrument or sing? I play guitar, im interested in starting something punk oriented, i have equip, pa, and maybe access to drums. anyone down to rock?
Damn, there was supposed to be a linkie to my myspace blog:
"I know people have been positing this for over 25 years but after seeing Avril Lavigne rehearse at work today I've come to accept that PUNK IS DEAD. With the princess of the tweeners co-opting punk, filtering it down and sweetening it up until it's a mess of sugary pap, there's going to be a whole generation growing up with the mindset that what Mr and Mrs Whibley do is punk. Time to move on, punk is dead, but there's nothing interesting on the horizon."
Apparently Punk has fallen off a pleasure boat cruise off the coast of Mexico and is considered missing. Search parties are current combing an area of approximately 60 square miles of the Pacific Ocean. Any hope of finding Punk alive and well grows dimer each day.........
I play keys mostly, but can hold my own on bass and strum along on guitar. Haven't been in a band in years but would love to play with people again. I tend to play New Orleans style jazz/funk on classic keyboards - Hammond organs, electric and acoustic pianos, etc. Think Medeski, Martin, and Wood, Stanton Moore, Charlie Hunter, Robert Walter, etc. If anyone else would be interested, I've certainly got the space to play and reasonably tolerant neighbours. I'm open to playing just about anything, though I've never found much room for keys in punk...
I play trumpet and have my whole life. havent picked up a horn in 4 years and am currently shopping for another. I would have to attone myself to all the scales again, which would take me a few months b4 my services could be worth a shit.
What? Come on!. I was sure someone would have offered up the
"I play skin flute" line by now.
As for me, i have an electric guitar and a small Fender bassman that i noodle around on and can play a few chords. But i've played Allto Sax (another popular instrument in the Punk Scene) for 25 + years, just not recently (not counting Ridgeway Den Dinner)
"Man, I've always wanted to hear a mariachi punk band. Something similar to what the Pogues did to Irish music."
IT IS TIME.
I played violin for YEARS...haven't touched it in a while, but could pick it back up again and be slightly useful in a little while. I'm DYING to play mariachi music, and punk mariachi - yes, with a goddam violin - would be SUH-WEET.
"I'm DYING to play mariachi music, and punk mariachi - yes"
Yeah, I like what Calexico has done with Mariachi La Luz de la Luna, but I'm thinking something with a little more zest. Ani Cordero gots some good stuff, too, but she doesn't have a very full band.
I play guitar, bass, keys, and 1/2 of a drum kit. Played allot when I lived in NYC but got really turned off on the music "scene" in LA when everyone I was playing with wanted to "make it big" and shit. Quit playing with people since and have only been doing 4 track cassette recordings since.
Oldest picture I have of me when I thought I was cool.
I think this was 1972.
Everybody else looked just like me.
Same flannel shirt and everything. The hat is pre-AC/DC.
My bike is just out of the picture.
I play the recorder and I am well known in the Tibetan Scream Singing genre.
I used to play a bunch of instruments in high school. I was a band geek. I played the trumpet, trombone, sax-a-ma-phone and the guitar.
Now, I just fiddle with the guitar.
@ joe borfo
id be totally down to be in a "midnight ridazz" band, but only if you would sing in your bunny suit.
@ funanu
would you be down to play drums??
y'all, lets get this rollin! this looks like we might end up with a 10pc+ band, so far, we have horns, keyboards, singers, guitars - so who else is down?
@ borfo, hows everyone for rehearsal on wednesday nights?
If this band is gonna be a midnight ridazz inspired band, how does everyone feel about dressing in costumes (i want to wear my pajamas!)
whatever man. just tell us when and where . I'll wear whatever I feel like wearing... how can we get this to the point where we can ride while we do a gig? I'm SERIOUS
Didn't South Bay Cruisers either have a band or bring in a band that traveled and then played with the riders generating power via bikes? ie. no electrical outlets were used.
And costumes? As RBI can attest, Dino Sex and GG Allin didn't need no stinking costumes (or clothes either).
don't listen to me. I'm just a shit talker.
a band of ridazz that gets to use MR as part of their name/identity. Who will be firrst/only group to do this? hahaha!
[laughs!!!]
10+ pc band is no problem. In Highschool my friends and I decided we'd make a band called Blasphemy 666 which would have 6 guitarists, 6 bass players, 6 drummers and 6 singers. We never did it but I maintain that it would have been loud as hell.
Someone just needs to set up a rig to attach to BigBikeDan so the band band can play live on it and he can pull them around the city. Hellz yeah!
I spoke to Nightingale Studios in Burbank today. My friend Kim from The Muffs rehearses there. Studio B is large enough to comfortably hold 10-15 people and is $16/hour with a 3 hour minimum. That includes mic and PA system. For $10 more, they will provide a drum kit (without symbols and sticks) and a bass and guitar amp.
I also called West LA Studios and they have a similar room (#7) that can hold 10 comfortably. Their rate is $18/hr. with 3hr. min.
Both places were concerned that this was more of a party than a rehearsal. They aren't really designed for that or for lots of people hanging out in the hallways and disturbing the other musicians.
Depending on what our intentions are, ie. a big gathering of people to make some music and keeping it just musicians or if we want to share the collaborative experience with alll the Ridazz, friends, etc. If its the latter, then i'd suggest we find some warehouse or other large space where we see what magic happens.
And lastly, i suggest we throw together a list of interested people and their instruments (like we do for the Den Dinner lists) so we can see what electric/power needs we may need. (if we have 10 electric guitarists, no rehearsal space will be able to accommodate us.
@stevo
thanks for the research! if we get the ball rollin now, we could probably be playing by this summer! the studios sound like a great idea, if we can get 11 people to chip in 5 bucks each, thats pretty doable.
If you guys wanted to meet at a park first to have an acoustic/quieter/starter session just to figure out what we would or could be playing, i would be down.
I would love to do a mariachi punk band (dont know if its been done before) but also be into anything else thats crazy and would fit the midnight ridazz vibe. Anything goes sounds great!
Maybe first of all, can we get a count of whos in, and what instrument they play, and what genre they can play or want to play, and what area they live in?
It occurs to me that a mobile band could be quite nicely done with a bunch of beater tandems- musicians on the back with wireless transmitters to direct inject boxes on a small battery powered mixer going to a single reasonable sized amp mounted on a trailer. Guitarists could use effects pedals before the mixer on the amp trailer, though they couldn't get real amplifier distortion when sharing an amp. We'd need a lot of faith in our captains to carry expensive instruments while riding no handed, but it could certainly be done.
I've got a great little 3 octave midi keyboard that's not much wider than mountain bike handlebars. It can drive some pretty great sounds out of my laptop, which could be mounted on a rack over the rear wheel and transmit wirelessly to the mixer+amp. And I've always secretly harbored a desire to find an excuse to buy a cheesy 80s guitar-keyboard controller thing. I've also got one wireless rig from my bass playing days and a tandem, so that's a pretty good start to the project with 0 cost.
It occurs to me that if we wanted individual amps, a tandem duo should be able to tow a trailer fairly effortlessly so long as grades are reasonable, and I'm pretty sure I could pedal and play keyboard or bass at the same time (though I'm really not any good at the bass). Building a bunch of trailers and tandems would be a big undertaking at the bike kitchenovenerowave, but not be out of the realm of the possible on a reasonable budget if we're motivated.
I'd be interested enough in the idea to put some money and a lot of time into the project if there were a commitment from enough participants to make completion reasonably likely. A bicycle-mounted mobile rock/punk/mariachi/jazz band would just be a ton of fun at so many events - The Midnight Playazz? Only problem I see is that you couldn't really do horns of any kind while riding - way too much risk of damage to instruments and lips/teeth when hitting bumps to risk it, I'd think. But guitars, bass, keys, bongos, and vocals seem doable.
"I'm sorry to say but this wouldn't be a good time for me to join a band right now."
I'm sorry to say I have the time but not the talent. I'd be happy to tow mobile equipment when the band gets going and check out rehearsals if the rehearsal spot has room.
I heard back from another lead on a space in Silverlake. Its a single room open space that should hold 15 people comfortably. Its also $15/hr with a 3 hr. minimum. Prolly more centrally located than Burbank or Westside, but doesn't matter to me.
Btw, what is everyone's favorite Mariachi Song? Or, maybe the better question would be, what Mariachi song would translate well to Punk?
Yo se bien que estoy afuera
Pero el dia que yo me muera
Se que tendras que llorar.
(Llorar y llorar, llorar y llorar)
Diras que no me quisistes
Pero vas a estar muy triste
Y asi te me vas a quedar.
Coro:
Con dinero y sin dinero.
Yo hago siempre lo que quiero.
Y mi palabra es la ley.
No tengo trono ni reina.
Ni nadie que me comprenda.
Pero sigo siendo el rey.
Una piedra en el camino
Me enseno que mi destino.
Era rodar y rodar.
(Rodar y rodar, rodar y rodar)
Tambien me dijo un arriero
Que no hay que llegar primero
Pero hay que saber llegar.
Coro...
