Damn, there was supposed to be a linkie to my myspace blog:

"I know people have been positing this for over 25 years but after seeing Avril Lavigne rehearse at work today I've come to accept that PUNK IS DEAD. With the princess of the tweeners co-opting punk, filtering it down and sweetening it up until it's a mess of sugary pap, there's going to be a whole generation growing up with the mindset that what Mr and Mrs Whibley do is punk. Time to move on, punk is dead, but there's nothing interesting on the horizon."

I play keys mostly, but can hold my own on bass and strum along on guitar. Haven't been in a band in years but would love to play with people again. I tend to play New Orleans style jazz/funk on classic keyboards - Hammond organs, electric and acoustic pianos, etc. Think Medeski, Martin, and Wood, Stanton Moore, Charlie Hunter, Robert Walter, etc. If anyone else would be interested, I've certainly got the space to play and reasonably tolerant neighbours. I'm open to playing just about anything, though I've never found much room for keys in punk...

10+ pc band is no problem. In Highschool my friends and I decided we'd make a band called Blasphemy 666 which would have 6 guitarists, 6 bass players, 6 drummers and 6 singers. We never did it but I maintain that it would have been loud as hell.

Someone just needs to set up a rig to attach to BigBikeDan so the band band can play live on it and he can pull them around the city. Hellz yeah!

It might have to be more than one bike to pull though. I love the concept!

BBD can tow the equipment and then we could have one volunteer tow person per musician. I volunteer to tow a musician since I'm a talentless fuck.

I spoke to Nightingale Studios in Burbank today. My friend Kim from The Muffs rehearses there. Studio B is large enough to comfortably hold 10-15 people and is $16/hour with a 3 hour minimum. That includes mic and PA system. For $10 more, they will provide a drum kit (without symbols and sticks) and a bass and guitar amp.

I also called West LA Studios and they have a similar room (#7) that can hold 10 comfortably. Their rate is $18/hr. with 3hr. min.

Both places were concerned that this was more of a party than a rehearsal. They aren't really designed for that or for lots of people hanging out in the hallways and disturbing the other musicians.

Depending on what our intentions are, ie. a big gathering of people to make some music and keeping it just musicians or if we want to share the collaborative experience with alll the Ridazz, friends, etc. If its the latter, then i'd suggest we find some warehouse or other large space where we see what magic happens.

And lastly, i suggest we throw together a list of interested people and their instruments (like we do for the Den Dinner lists) so we can see what electric/power needs we may need. (if we have 10 electric guitarists, no rehearsal space will be able to accommodate us.

Thoughts???

@stevo
thanks for the research! if we get the ball rollin now, we could probably be playing by this summer! the studios sound like a great idea, if we can get 11 people to chip in 5 bucks each, thats pretty doable.

If you guys wanted to meet at a park first to have an acoustic/quieter/starter session just to figure out what we would or could be playing, i would be down.

I would love to do a mariachi punk band (dont know if its been done before) but also be into anything else thats crazy and would fit the midnight ridazz vibe. Anything goes sounds great!

Maybe first of all, can we get a count of whos in, and what instrument they play, and what genre they can play or want to play, and what area they live in?

It occurs to me that a mobile band could be quite nicely done with a bunch of beater tandems- musicians on the back with wireless transmitters to direct inject boxes on a small battery powered mixer going to a single reasonable sized amp mounted on a trailer. Guitarists could use effects pedals before the mixer on the amp trailer, though they couldn't get real amplifier distortion when sharing an amp. We'd need a lot of faith in our captains to carry expensive instruments while riding no handed, but it could certainly be done.

I've got a great little 3 octave midi keyboard that's not much wider than mountain bike handlebars. It can drive some pretty great sounds out of my laptop, which could be mounted on a rack over the rear wheel and transmit wirelessly to the mixer+amp. And I've always secretly harbored a desire to find an excuse to buy a cheesy 80s guitar-keyboard controller thing. I've also got one wireless rig from my bass playing days and a tandem, so that's a pretty good start to the project with 0 cost.

It occurs to me that if we wanted individual amps, a tandem duo should be able to tow a trailer fairly effortlessly so long as grades are reasonable, and I'm pretty sure I could pedal and play keyboard or bass at the same time (though I'm really not any good at the bass). Building a bunch of trailers and tandems would be a big undertaking at the bike kitchenovenerowave, but not be out of the realm of the possible on a reasonable budget if we're motivated.

I'd be interested enough in the idea to put some money and a lot of time into the project if there were a commitment from enough participants to make completion reasonably likely. A bicycle-mounted mobile rock/punk/mariachi/jazz band would just be a ton of fun at so many events - The Midnight Playazz? Only problem I see is that you couldn't really do horns of any kind while riding - way too much risk of damage to instruments and lips/teeth when hitting bumps to risk it, I'd think. But guitars, bass, keys, bongos, and vocals seem doable.

Anyone in?

I'm sorry to say I have the time but not the talent. I'd be happy to tow mobile equipment when the band gets going and check out rehearsals if the rehearsal spot has room.

I heard back from another lead on a space in Silverlake. Its a single room open space that should hold 15 people comfortably. Its also $15/hr with a 3 hr. minimum. Prolly more centrally located than Burbank or Westside, but doesn't matter to me.

Btw, what is everyone's favorite Mariachi Song? Or, maybe the better question would be, what Mariachi song would translate well to Punk?

EL REY

Yo se bien que estoy afuera
Pero el dia que yo me muera
Se que tendras que llorar.
(Llorar y llorar, llorar y llorar)
Diras que no me quisistes
Pero vas a estar muy triste
Y asi te me vas a quedar.
Coro:
Con dinero y sin dinero.
Yo hago siempre lo que quiero.
Y mi palabra es la ley.
No tengo trono ni reina.
Ni nadie que me comprenda.
Pero sigo siendo el rey.
Una piedra en el camino
Me enseno que mi destino.
Era rodar y rodar.
(Rodar y rodar, rodar y rodar)
Tambien me dijo un arriero
Que no hay que llegar primero
Pero hay que saber llegar.
Coro...
