hi
i'm thinking of getting one from
junky rusty bikes
my question is how do roadbikes handle urban streets, ie potholes, cracked road, curbs with no slope
and regarding handling, harder or easier to control then a mountain bike on a city street?
thanks.

Mountain bikes on the road are not as efficient. Their tires are of a softer compound and the knobbies wear off quickly. The purpose really matters, for commuting get a bike with skinny tires. If you need a bike for short errands, anything will do.

Or go cutting edge and have a MTB with road tires. Sooner or later all the hipsters on fixies will be doing it.

THE ALMIGHTY HYBRID!
Not tough enough to really go off-road, not fast enough to keep up with the road bikes, not cool enough to get you laid.

Any bike with a wide availability of off-the-shelf, here-today, no-fucking-special-order bullshit is the bike to have!!!
This usually means any mountain bike with basic systems.
I mean, if I get a flat at 2AM, and I'm out of patches, no spare tube, but next to a WalMart, I'll most always find 26" tubes there.

Those could actually be full-suspension cyclocross rigs with smooth 700's or 29'ers on board.
I read about those things in an MTB magazine awhile back and I was like, "Yo' shittin' me, right?!?"

Buy the bike that makes you happy.
I love my MTB with 1.5 inch road slicks, but I'm a big guy who needs something way durable.
Fixies and road bikes are faster and cooler, but also usually more expensive, more fragile and more likely to get stolen.
Hybrids / beach cruisers / comfort bikes are fine for cruising around / party rides / etc. They don't get much respect, but they're simple and comfortable.
But seriously Vlad, IS THERE a bicycle cool enough to get one laid?
I mean, I know that happens with cars, but that's usually because it signifies that the owner has the spare $ to provide for a materialistic girlfriend.
But if there's a bike or bikes that work their magic on the ladies, it would be interesting to hear which they are.

Speaking of jumping down stairs, no one here mentioned urban freeride bikes. Some of those with the more relaxed geometry are quite ridable, and are pretty fucking tough. A lot of kids in Calgary (Alberta, Canada) ride those, probably because they do DH/freeriding in the parks and mountains, and also because those bikes seem to be pretty good in the snow. LA doesn't have too much of either, but it does have some places (esp. downtown) that would seem to be good for urban FR. Beats BMX anyway. I've yet to see one here though.
@JB
It happens IN cars, but the fact that it happens WITH cars is a big myth from the luxury/sports automobile cabal. Even the skankiest hoes I know (and I know some pretty skanky hoes) don't put out just because of the car. On the other hand, I pimped out my fixie with yellow tires, chain, saddle and bar tape, and now I regularly get girls coming up to me to tell me how nice my bike is. Have you ever seen that happen to a dude in a car? Unless he's at a car show of some kind, not likely!

Women often admire both of my track bikes, yet somehow not a one of them has followed up on this with an offer of immediate commitment-free sex.
For the longest time I couldn't figure out what was wrong. After all, it's not like I don't ooze hot manly virility and sophistication, as evidenced in the photograph below:
Then finally it hit me: it's because when I get off the bike (and often when I get back on it), I am pouring sweat. Apparently this isn't as much of a turn-on as one might think. Thus, I am selling all of my bicycles and purchasing a Segway. I am going to get so much action it is not even funny.

Segway ain't the way to go either, trust me on this. You'll get constant questions about, "Are you from the future?", "Can you give me a good stock tip?", " Will we finally have our jet packs?". Dude, does this Segway give you a clue?
User108.28.08 - 12:50 pm

i want to trounce the fucker on the segway in ojai who rides that stupid thing when hes inside the bar. he doesnt park it in the corner or lock it up outside. he stands on it while ordering drinks and talking to elderly women. never steps foot off of it.
ive seen him more than once leaving the post office the same way, only its during the day and instead of riding on the sidewalk he hogs the lane like a cyclist would, except those things go like, walking speed and not bicycle speed.

What we need is a bike with adjustable geometry for the intended use!!!
I'm talking about a bike where you could adjust the forks/triangles for different wheel sizes, brake-heights, and lean angles.
I mean, yeah you could be cool and have an armada of bikes within your reach, or you could be a cheap-ass like myself and keep a single bike for all seasons.
Another thing that would be nice would be a wheel that could be switched over from 26" to 700c in a snap-lock of a second!!!
All you gotta to do is carry foldable tires and tubes, then you're good to go.
bentstrider08.28.08 - 9:44 pm

well the main thing with that is weight and durability.
make a bike out of titanium but make it weight like aluminum!

If you're worried about shitty road conditions, get a cross bike (surly cross-check!) or one of the cool new urban bikes by swobo or similar that can take like 28s or 32s but are still much closer to road bike body positioning/weight...i think that's the great balance between rolling resistance/stability.
Not that i'd ever ride bigger than 25s myself... :O
