I'm not saying sober up, but let's look into more rides that don't involve having to stop near a place of business for awhile.
With all the concerned store owners and thieves that accompany rides, then disappear into the woodwork, this would be an excellent idea as far as I'm concerned.
Alternatives to this could be the ones we've tried before on rides like the PF2.
Stop in a general area void of any retail presence on the spot, but with something located nearby for short, refueling runs.
That way, if there are any thefts at those stores, no one's going to spot an enormous herd of ridazz nearby and draw an assumption.

Part of the problem is the ride is starting to attract younger people. Use to be a time when most people were of drinking age. Now a big percentage are minors and it is no secret that MR will provide anything they need to drink or smoke; part of this 'community' thing. Troubles me to see that someone got a curfew violation ticket, how young do you have to be to get one of those?
I'm all for having everyone come out on the MR rides but be more responsible when offering someone a drink or smoke. Someday a minor or even a juvenile will get hurt and the closest adult might be blamed, main reason I stay sober on these rides.
Point is we are giving an an impression that MR is a drunken party on wheels, that everyone has to have something. I know that it might be a stretch but has anyone considered that some of the stealing might be because someone cannot legally buy alcohol? Not saying that minors and juveniles are thieves but in a setting where drinking is the norm, how are you going to get your beer?

I always thought it was Sins and Sprockets because it predates Crank Mob. MR stops use to be part of the theme. The liquor store/bars stop was the SnS theme, now every ride is like SnS, so much for variety.
True, sins is up there with my list of favorite MR rides. Wolfpack Hustle, Sins, and the 2nd Friday in that order. 2nd Friday use to be #1, partly because it was the original but that too has lost some of its appeal. It is really good to have choices but when everything is same, it doesn't really matter.
The very first ride stopped at a liquor store. For years MR was welcomed at liquor stores. I remember specifically skull going to a store on temple and telling the owner we were coming by. The guy was so happy and actually kept his store open in anticipation of 50 customers coming by. NO ONE STOLE A DAMN THING.
Its not that we stop at liquor stores its that the people joining up lately haven't grown out of their selfish behaviour yet.

Having 50 friends on a ride is different to what MR has become. The numbers and the appeal has change. The reputation of MR changes the further you go away from LA.
There are several things going on in the cycling community that might affect MR. First is the growing popularity of fixies beyond big cities. The fixie is the new razor scooter or mini cycle. The popularity is fueled by bike trick videos like MASH and You Tube videos of our rides and races. As more and more kids get into it, the greater the need to find rides; this is very good.
The other thing is MR has the reputation of being a drunken ride and it is easy to get alcohol. Unfortunately this misconception is the model that many use to start their rides. This is not so good.
This might not be your vision of MR but it is a perception that is real. I suggest going back to stressing the theme. Make it that drinking is secondary.
To further demonstrate the popularity of fixies/MR. I have been asked by my club's junior team to stage a MR style ride in lieu of our last training ride of the season. So this Wednesday, I will have about 30 juniors , parents, and grandparents ride through the foothills communities of San Dimas and Claremont ala MR.

I would totally do this if I ever actually noticed the people stealing shit. It's now illegal for me to walk into the nearest CVS to my house, and I have no problem teachnig selfish fuck-ups a bit of respect. Now... self-policing does work, as long as we keep an eye out. I know when I asked someone to stop fucking with city property on the Play in the Valley ride, he stopped right away. The group just needs to confront the people screwing us over, I think they're generally more amicable than we make them out to be.

To prevent stealing, don't stop at a liquor stores, convenience stores, supermarkets. Make it everyone responsibility to bring what they need. There are countless of stores along the route and the rides does not go that fast. There is no reason why you can't stop, buy what you need and catch the back of the pack.
What hurts MR is the association with the thefts. By not using their parking lots as a stops, people will be forced to stop, to refuel, on their own. This will lead to smaller groups in the stores and the opportunity to steal because of the swarming will decrease.
Unfortunately, no one can stop others from stealing. All we can do is stop providing the opportunity for these people.
I think stopping at parks that are close to liquor stores and such are a great idea. I think It was two LACM's ago where there wasn't even one liquor store stop, it was a fucking amazing idea. But everyone had the option to go to any store they wanted and the people on the ride were giving directions to the stores.
I know it logically, but I spent the first 17 years of my life in the "Jew Bubble", so I still subconciously expect the people around me to "speak Jew", as one of my friends puts it.

Cool." the kid would be shamed into putting back/paying for the alcohol, particularly if an experienced Rida was the one doing that.
I think the title of this thread pretty much says it. I suspect that the people who do this kind of shoplifting probably have issues with authority, so having some kind of self-appointed parental figure at the door telling them not to do it is not going to sway them.

I've live in the LA area over 40 years, a significant part of that in Echo Park. Looking a kid in the eye and saying "Don't do that' does not work.

Yes it has been tried and yes it has failed. There are laws against stealing and yet in happens. For religious types, it is part of their doctrines and yet it happens. Society in general says 'Don't steal' yet it happens. How can a group like MR be more compelling than the ones I just describe?

Have two or three people at the doors during the stop, give announcements through out the ride, and if someone does do it and they get caught thats up for the entire ride to decide their punishment.

We could bring huge signs and put them up on top of the entrance of the doors on the store saying things like "STEAL AND YOU WILL NEVER BE ALLOWED TO COME ON ANOTHER RIDE" "YOUR RUINING IT FOR US" "YOUR (citys name) PRIVILEGES WILL BE REVOKED" there are tons of ideas.

Cut out the stupid boring stops in the first place, and you won't have to worry about stationing hall monitors at the door. Do this, plus teach people how to ride in a straight line, and all of our problems will be solved and we can go back to arguing about whether it's legal to ride on the freeway.

I kind of read this thread. I skipped all the ALL CAPS shit, but read the other stuff. I still want to see us stopping at stores for booze or pee pee break and stuff. The last LACM was a nice call stopping at Ralph's for our first and only stop. Peeps got and out easy and fast. Good crowd control was maintained by us and the security. I know on some of the rides we've had ridazz watching the door to see if there's any douchebags walking out with booze. This is the best way to take care of this problem. Don't put the burden of security on to the store. That's asking for them to ban us. They won't deal with it. The last thing I want to do is stop taking a break like this. Just because of a couple of fuckheads.

But seriously we do need to be able to stop at stores at least for the bathrooms... us girls can't just use any empty tree. So the best thing to do is to try and self-police at stops like that one. We now know to avoid that particular CVS, but at the time it was the most convenint place to stop on the route, and the only one open that late in the immediate area.
I know it sounds crazy but, maybe just maybe we should try to ride bikes for a while. Keep the stops just long enough to regroup and then Ride our bikes again.
I know its a crazy idea, but desperate times calls for desperate measures.

if you see someone stealing shit you should either confront them right then and there or go wait for them outside with a megaphone or the music trailer mic and announce the theif when he/she walks out of the store. at that point the group can decide what the next move will be. I dont think that person will try that shit again.
Anyone who brings unwanted police attention to the group through stealing, destroying property, getting into fights etc is in effect acting like a snitch and should be dealt accordingly.

I used to do this in high school, however, I found waiting another day or two will make it stronger... just don't wait too long, or you end up with a vinegar tasting stuff (as it is becoming vinegar), i also added a bit of brown sugar or raisins to sweeten it a bit more.
