so i just found out about a bit of the drama with the conflict of the VeGaNBaNaNaPeNiS Ride and the formal ride. and although juno called me yesterday and spoke to me about meeting up, i didn't realize that he had rescheduled his original date because of conflict with another ride. so, having realized this, i am a bit hurt that he rescheduled for robotz but not for my ride (even though it is a westside ride).
i do think that anyone should be able to post a ride any day, time, location etc. the reason i planned my ride for this particular date was because it was available and NO ONE had claimed it. i originally schedule it a couple months ago, but realized that there were other big rides happening. i suppose i understood that there was an unspoken rule and i wanted to respect whatever tradition i felt was holding this great group of ridazz together.
i foolishly assumed that the 2nd and 4th friday were the BIG Midnight Ridazz rides where everyone got together for one huge orgy of a ride.
i understand now, especially with the influx of new ridazz, that the unspoken tradition or 'respect' for it, is an archaic model, if it ever existed.
i'm just sad that some of the folks who i had hoped on attending my ride (funanu, franz, sc_nomad (who rarely comes out to rides)), are possibly going to the other ride.
anyhow, RIDE ON!!!!

I plan to be there and i'll be happy to represent the westside if they don't show up. But i thought their ride was earlier and they planned on hooking up with your ride. Has that changed? I haven't been following the threads recently.

MR started with eight people. The "one big ride" aspect of it is something that just happened as the scene exploded in size, mainly because (I'm just guessing here) few of the currently existing social networks existed, even as late as 2006, to sustain other big group rides. There's nothing traditional about it, in other words; it's just something that developed organically and will someday undevelop organically. There's certainly nothing about it that rightfully demands any cult-like "respect."
To be sure, there's a lot to be said for a recurring big group ride where you can see all of your friends from around the city. If nothing else, it can act as a countervailing force to the social disintegration that is already starting to happen as people spin off into their own regional/niche bike events. But the way to promote that is to tell people
why it's a good thing, not to nag and shame them into doing it because if they don't do it they're not "respecting" some imaginary "tradition." That's my only beef with it. I hope this makes sense.

once again i would like to apologize on behalf of well umm myself.
the first time i changed the ride date, it was from courtesy.
the second time i changed it i just got frustrated. didn't seem like it would be possible to get a ride to not conflict with any others.
it may be my new self but i was not aware that these MR rides were recurring, i just thought they happened when it did. that's my foolish mistake and I will pay for it.
if either ride is capsized, i am very sorry, but also note that i got a lot of the first time riders in the past month to come out for this ride, and wish i could make some sort of compromise.
this wasn't an act of disrespect towards anyone, more like ignorance and not enough info on my part.
but this is a one time thing, non-recurring event (so far). for future big rides, I will take better note to scheduling and even plan them very far ahead of time.
but around 10 ish we will turn on La brea heading west after going east on santa monica. we can raid pink's for a little while and have you guys join us. We'll take it back down melrose all the way to san vincente before heading to the park.

I will be in this ride, not that it really matters.
Part of the reason I was trying to find out what the 'official' 2nd Friday ride was is; I somehow became the coordinator for my group for the 2nd Friday ride. We come from North Orange County and the Pomona Valley. I coordinate the carpools or give people info on where to park and such. While most eventually find out about this site and make their own arrangements, some would rather defer to me. Also, we get MR first timers every month and having someone there to get them to the rides helps.
Most of the people I bring to the rides are already avid cyclists but the idea of having a local ride of around 1000 ridazz, in the middle of the night, is foreign to them. Part of the appeal of the ride is how many people show up.

i don't get why it's such a big deal. i love the idea of the banana ride but it's on the eastside which is really hard to get to by the start time from the westside.

Traditions are important to the extent that they are useful to human beings. Beyond that, they're baggage.
"No rida left behind" is an ethic. An ethic is something you do because you perceive it to be right. A tradition is something you do because somebody else did it in the past. See the difference?

there are always plenty of other one time rides that people put up to celebrate a special occasion on top of a regular ride. its bound to happen.
now if i started a REGULAR ride every second friday of the month on top of the MR rides, thats disrespectful.

i wish there was a way to resolve this "issue". some of the MR riders seem unhappy and that's not what i went for at all. I'm not for conflict at all and I've found a new home in the MR community. sure i may just be the naive little nephew now, but i don't want any feelings of "disapproval"
i hope all the riders not in formal attire, attend the MR ride. which by my calculation should still outnumber us in large quantities.

that's what i enjoyed about the 2nd and 4th fridays.
when someone changes the date of their ride out of "consideration" for one group but not another, that's a bit inconsiderate. (just a tad.) but this is a "Do What You Want" community, so Do What You Want. i just wouldn't call it considerate.

okay okay i'm not trying to add drama i'm just bummed that it has all exploded to this. i've never seen it before and i had no idea there was a rule and neither did ijunes. i used to think the midnight ridazz rides were once a month, but i could swear there were two in one month once so it's confusing.
i just hope we can all meet peacefully in the middle but i don't know if it will happen at this rate.

once again, and for the last time, really really sorry about the scheduling conflict.
as far as consideration goes, moving it from the robot duckz, was my first considerate move.
then it became the friday before crank mob. i got shit there so i moved to one day before my original date.
after i conflicted with VBP, it became a compromise mission. if it were up to me, i'd be doing it on the 13th like i originally planned.
so i got shit for having it on certain days, and i got shit for changing dates.
i checked the ride calendar every time before i changed the date.
i've eaten a lot of shit.
and i'd also like to apologize for not understanding many of the unwritten rules, as i try to familiarize myself with them as we continue, and hopefully we can all have fun tonight in peace.
come to either ride, each ride will be a different experience, but i have yet to have FUN at a ride (except for the one where we all got searched by LAPD, that was wack) and should i ever post another ride, I will definitely do more research.
once again to resolve this "issue", i personally would like to apologize to the old riders for whom i fucked this up for.
some of the new riders may not care, but i have much respect for the people who have been doing this a long time.

marino- I'm pretty sure even though I've never met you in person that you were in one of my dreams last night.
We were inside this huge dome thing and I was firing lasers at these invading spaceships with what seemed to be a laser pointer. I was also wearing some sort of Darth Vader-ish helmet which had light up buttons in the eye sockets and it was really hard to remove to push the buttons. A terrible design really.
I specifically remember firing a laser right into the cockpit of one of the spaceships and hit their control panel... Man did they get fucked up.
It was really cool.

You've way too much drama going on between these two rides. I read most of it but it seems you've taken a complete opposite stance than what you've taken before. What was your position when Night Train crew wanted to do a ride the day before S&S ride? They also wanted to start at same place as the S&S ride started at. Your position was that anyone can do a ride any day and any place they wanted to. You stuck up for the Night Train folks and said we were silly for even disputing this. So why the change in positions here?

Big thanx for your trailer-services after the batteries in mu jambox went kaput!!!!
First, BBD had his experimental-trailer go out, then it was basically myself bumping the ride along until the Whittier Blvd park place.
After that, my system bent over, then yours sort of took over.
Anywho, lots of interesting and new faces to be seen and interviewed tonight.

i arranged the cops who went BaNaNaS!!! i want nothing but the best for you all. all little game of split up the bikey bikies and watch the bikey bikies scatter sucked, but was sooooo strangely exciting. i really thought the ride was over when all the cops started showing up, but was so proud and relieved to find a bunch of VeGaNBaNaNaPeNiSeS scattered around downtown and finally converging into one enormous group again. good job, everyone!
thanks to all who showed up! you all made my ride the success that i'm hearing and felt it was. the turn out was surprisingly large and i only wish i had made more spoke cards.
congrats to winners of the VeGaNBaNaNaPeNiS distance toss (forgot your name. sorry) and costume contest (PC). i'm glad you all got so into it! it was hilarious. (except i felt bad for stumbling pc.)
and thanks to theroyalacademy (sean) for helping with the awesome spoke cards and sean and alex (tallcans) for helping with route ideas and herding the cattle. you fuckers pretend you're dominant but actually enjoy a little submission when i put you in your place!

Despite the police-interaction, that night was one of the most interesting ones I've experienced this Summer.
I mean, this shit get's entirely better each weekend.
Annie, I hope you're not mad at me for not playing any of your fine tunes.
It's just that I had to fine-tune your IPod to get good sound through my boombox.
My IPod alone takes me about 15-20 minutes to fine-tune for optimal-listening quality on that system of mine.
Perhaps a banana-split in the near-future will iron this out.

The hundredth Midnight Ridazz party I mean bike ride is very special, and I am pleased to say it I was a part of it. Looking back at all the rides that have preceeded it, and all the changes to the scene that have come along, it was nice to see where things are going. I like that this one had only one stop, glorious Hollenbeck park and its sparkling lake. The rest of the time we actually did what we set out to do, which is ride bikes all over this beautiful city and enjoy it's urban landscape.
I know there was a little static in DTLA regarding LAPD and some riders, I myself got pulled over with one of my signature tallcans on my tall bike, but I narrowly escaped un-ticketed! The multi leader dynamic of this ride, Annie, Royal Academy, and my Tallbike (not me, the Tallbike does all the talking) is the way to keep a large party going even when it gets torn apart by the Fuzz.
THANK YOU Annie, Shawn, and Roadblock and Skull for letting me realize my dream of stepping up and not just following the 2nd Friday MR!!!

A shout out needs to go to Steph and Lance and the Mosey. Because stopping at Hollenbeck Park was my main contribution to the route and I would've never known that park existed without the Mosey.
