Thats what I'm talking about. I got $500 on it. But lets look at them first, I'm a pretty decent judge of cars by looking and listening to them. We should do some research on these models, and see what problems they have, and what the insurance liability is on them. Service history, mileage and condition should all be taken into consideration.

LOVE IT!
please report on this one...

I do have an issue with this, and I want this issue to be discussed more:

Do the Ridazz want a completely gutted bus (like mine for sale), or do they want a finished bus (like above)? Is it better to do both?

RE: "READY NOW" version, as posted above, and with most other large vehicles I have seen.

advantages
-lower cost, and/or no time involved in getting ready.

disadvantages
-lesser quality is typical.
-little to no room for improvement. less-customizable.
-to become customizable, it would take substantial time/$$.

Do Ridazz want or NEED a large, freak fest bus thats a blank slate for customizing and exploding our circus?

This is very important to me, as we have spent/ will continue to spend much time designing for this purpose. I am a trained architect and designer, and am pursuing the Ridazz as a client, free of charge. If a simple answer to Ridazz Road Trips is whats listed above, then I shouldnt be working on the project with Ridazz at all and should go elsewhere with my project.

We are designing the Ridazz Bus as we speak, and I can tell you with certainly you will love what we have. It cant be accomplished as cheaply or quickly with a "ready-to-go" version.

I want the bus to change Bicycle Culture in North America.

So, the question is whether or not I am wasting my time. Thoughts?

Do you want both?
Either?
Neither?

Marino,

I may be wrong, but I think what Marcus really wants to say is - you are pooping on his parade.

If we CAN do both, then cool. I'd be excited if there was another means of transport for more people & bikes for trips. However, if it is going to cut into the possibility for Marcus's dream to happen, then boo.

Marino technically I probably have 8x more debt than liquid assets between my camera gear and bikes.

I like the idea of having a smaller bus like this one. A big freakie bus means you have to have more peeps on board to do stuff. A smaller bus is more nibble and will be in demand far more often.

Marino, I take it this bus is not a diesel? With a diesel you'll have 30-40% better mileage per gallon. Diesels run and run and run and is made for heavy duty work. A diesel engine can burn bio-diesel. I do like the size and floor plan though. This size bus with a trailer would be an awesome setup.

This is crappy timing. I've been thinking about buying a car/truck, mostly for getting bikes and motorcycles to events and racetracks. A bus would work fantastic and the price is certainly right. But I leave tomorrow night for a month. I'm bummed.

Marcus,
ask Nicole. I've had a bus boner for a long time. I post on the TWBG list weekly about that. My intention was not to poo on your parade.

Maybe I got misunderstood.
If I'd buy a bus I wouldn't ask this community for anything other than gas money and perhaps someone to hold the title.

I wouldn't drain any bus resources. All I was asking was for someone to come with me and look at it.

On the big scheme of things, I think it's more realistic that a few small groups own a few small buses than the entire group owning one BIG bus. But I don't really want to argue this. If I was asked I would contribute to both.

On the even bigger scheme of things I don't think we should confuse what we love doing in our leisure time (friends, bikes) with what we do for work/career. Yes in an ideal world there would be no division between the two but it's not an ideal world and MR pays nobody's rent or even beer.

While MR is a lovely group of people I don't think they make ideal clients for a business or architecture project.
- They are very loosely connected if at all.
- They are broke.
- Even if they are not broke they like to act as if they are. It's part of the less is more philosophy that bicycles and fixies are all about.

Asking MR to spend more for more is kinda counterintuitive to their philosophy.

From an architecture/businesss point of view I think the time is ripe for alternative RVs for GenerationX.
Right now RV choices are the beige whales that are the equivalent of suburban tract housing and the highly individualistic Burning Man Art Cars with a thousand doll heads glued on them.

Between freak and boredom there is nothing in the middle.

There is an opportunity for designers to develop an RV that's sexy ie not beige. It could just be a concept RV. It wouldn't have to be roadworthy. The emphasis would be on design. This would be a worthy business proposition that would definitely deserve investment support.

15 years ago I asked a group of peers to help me fund a project.
10 people x $200/person = $2,000
Only one person came forward.
I did the project alone and when it was complete I leased it back to them and many others and made back my money many many times over.

Moral of the story? If you believe in something, DO IT and the rest will follow.

Diesel! It's got to be diesel. During the summer (it's got to be hot) you can run vegetable oil without any conversion. And you can run bio-diesel & regular diesel at any time. Veg-oil conversions are actually pretty affordable, and should be factored into the cost of any vehicle we buy.

This is what I see is happening. I know Marino, I trust Marino. And he's willing to just buy into a bus. No business entity, no business plans, no worries. He wants us to have a bus, as a family would buy a bus. Because he sees MR how I see it. As a family that will take care of it's own. Smaller bus, smaller costs, less hassle... and we'd have a bus. "By the weekend"

While the SMASHARCH Bicycle Freak Circus on Wheels Bus is a much bigger endeavor, with much larger start-up costs, greater concerns, and a longer time frame before we'd see the thing on the road.

I'm willing to invest in BOTH. I see getting the smaller bus as baby steps, and a test for something bigger. We already know we can go on long trips, as a group. So it's natural that we're looking into ways of getting MORE OF US on these trips. Thus, the Buses. Marcus's SMASHARCH RV/BUS project is something we definitely need to invest time, and look into. It's an opportunity for something great.

Buying a bus on a whim? awesome. Why not.

Ridazz Bus vs Rivalzz Bus

Here's my - brief - thoughts.

I'm ok with Marino going forward with the Rivalzz Bus. Done right it should prove the Ridazz Bus concept, by demonstrating the demand for something like this. From what I understand the van to portland was packed to the gills.

I'm committed to work on the Ridazz Bus. The Ridazz Bus is really an ambitious project, and something that could be awesome, not merely a vehicle for road trips. I'll watch the Rivalzz Bus with interest, but I'm not putting my shoulder behind it.

I'm thinking of it all as Voltron where the big Ridazz bus is the head/body/pelvic bone... and the other buses/cars are the arms and legs... you can guess what any one guy on a motorcycle would be... hahaha uh.

Also, apparently it's only $12 to ride the Marino Mobile.

This is very interesting.

I never actually said, implied, or more importantly meant any of these though:

Marino is stealing a project from me.
The Ridazz Bus is my dream, and/or mine alone.
This bus is a rival. (haha, "Midnight Rivalzz")

I wanted to make this thread an open discussion for the topic though. Marino brought it up before, once online, and once at the meeting but it didnt get the attention it deserves. What style of bus is right? The response to the question has been extra-double-triple-tall-supportive for the Big Bus to me, and SMASH will continue as planned.

@Marino - I am personally excited to hear your thoughts on the housing concept. "the beige whales that are the equivalent of suburban tract housing". This is the essence of the inspiration for our original residential vehicle concept. Its a new mode of dwelling which is becoming more relevant and has plenty of room for exploration. We hope to do more work in this area. We are not implying everyone should get "The Box", but we want to work on RV's as an alternative to the standard housing market. Awesome to hear others speak on this.

and regarding "The Moral" : Exactly. Love it.

@AlexThompson, oh dear fellow. Marino's interest in getting a bus has been around before Marcus put his bus on the "market". In fact, TWBG has been talking about getting a van conversion, or a bus, or plane (not really) for a while. Then richtotheie popped up with an RV, and Marcus suddenly showed up with an old RTD bus. We were jealous, a bit, but mostly inspired, and the project has never left our sights. By you declaring it as Ridazz vs Rivalzz might be creating an artificial rivalry, stirring things up unnecessarily. That's just silly. If that rivalry is in the same spirit as the Tren Way BG vs Armadillos 42 kind of rivalry, then that's cool. Party On. But, as it has been shown, the battle for NELA is serious business, NOT.

Marino's bus may very well become the Tren Way Bus. And in no way would it be a challenge to the Midnight Ridazz Bus. More likely, than not, it will become an arm of the Midnight Ridazz Fighting Machine.

Marino, keep looking. I want a diesel.

@Dak

I think other people first raised the issue that this might detract from the Ridazz Bus effort. The Rivalzz Bus moniker is tongue in cheek. I like to name things = it makes the discussion smoother.

I did read the various claims of priority, and I don't really see what that has to do with anything. I'm saying "I want to help with the Ridazz Bus, but I'm interested to see what happens with the Rivalzz Bus." It's pretty clear to me that the Rivalzz Bus is a bigger project than the Box, and there is a risk it would detract from the Ridazz Bus project.

I don't know about the diesel thing. They say diesel saves about 2mpg but try finding a 20 passenger diesel bus for 3K. The more I look the more I like the Tradewinds Adventurer I posted originally.

The bus idea still sounds great, but I'm still thinking of getting a late-80's, Ford F-250 with the 7.3 IDI-Diesel, as well as a 4x4 and 4/5spd manual.
With rental cars still biting me each time due to the "under-25" surcharge, I feel something like this would be good for getting to the MR rides and accomodating many bikes at the same time.
Not to mention the role it would play in the "stranded-rida-rescue" field.
Another reason for having this would be to serve its purpose as a back-up vehicle in case something catastrophic happens to one of my bikes.

I've seen a double decker red bus from London online, I'm thinking about buying it for Midnight RIdazz It'll be the 2 story bus so that if there are any riders we want to quarantine we can put them upstairs, plus I've always liked the idea of a london bus, I used to drive one!!

It doesn't need a lot of work and it should be almost a turn key operation, plus they get great gas mileage.

Problem with the London bus is that you won't fit under some hwy bridges, I think. I'm pretty sure they are taller than a semi, many of which barely fit. There are DEFINITELY some city streets that can't accomodate one because of low power lines and traffic signals and such. A shame, because they'd make the ultimate road trip vehicle. Leave it configured wth seats downstairs and have a living area upstairs.

you could always hack the roof off the top, exposing the seats like a convertible. Keep bikes up top and seats just no roof...

I'll have to check the stat's on them, but in the meantime, we'll just have to stay away from routes where bridges are 14' and under.
I always had to watch out for this type of thing when driving the rig.
Especially when I was nearly caught up under a 14' tunnel with the train-wires running over-head.
Luckily, SFPD got me out of that one, citation-free I might add.

Went to look at the buses today with Sexy and another friend.
The guy really needs to get rid of them. He has 3 buses. 2 running one not.
Basically you can name your price.
His last offer was $1500 for a running bus plus an extra non running bus for parts thrown in for free.

One of the running buses has 400K miles, the other 700K!!!!!
Engines have been rebuilt several times.
We test drove one, the engine sounded OKish but the ride felt sluggy, heavy and underpowered. They really didn't inspire confidence for a long trip.

I guess I was foolish to expect that for 3K I'd be buying some smooth running ride. These things are projects and I just don't have the time or patience to maintain them. I'd be happy to chip in towards other people's projects though.

Depending on the make of the buses, they were most likely equipped with some various, big-block, fuel-injected, gasoline-engine.
These things only last so long until the usual, wear/tear of mechanical parts begin to show, and the ECU/electrical components also do the same.
I myself am still going to keep a lookout for a Diesel-equipped, 4x4 pickup.
Or, another cool idea would be to get one of those ex-military, 2 1/2 ton trucks and sticking a camper on the back-end!!

Jesus, MR is going to have so many buses.

I wanna see a bus with, like, fifty bikes strapped to the outside and on the roof. Bikes everywhere. It'll look like it's made of bikes. Maybe old bikes that can't be salvaged can be mounted on the bike bus permanently.

A warehous is a great idea. Other cycling communities that I've been a part of, both in Northern Cali and Minneapolis, both had communal warehouse spaces that served everyone well. They are the swiss army knife of events, projects, storage and living.

I'd contribute to both a bus and a warehouse. I was thinking of a communal warehouse on the way home from my gf's today, actually. The last two years we've had to find venues for the Toy Ride, if we had a warehouse we could have many rides start or end there and not worry about space.

User1

Alan don't be a hipster. I hate you for suggesting auctions. Don't you know I hate auctions?
I hate auctions in all their forms.
House auctions
Car auctions
Ebay auctions
Auctions exist to benefit 1. The auctioneer 2. The seller
There is no benefit for the buyer. And they are no fun.
I'm old school. I'll trade you 3 goats for 2 carpets. That's how I roll.

Anyways... there is a bus like the ones on your "auction" down the street from me. They are asking for $2,800 and it's been sitting there for months.

Here I have some pictures from a junkyard I found in Lancaster last week plus pictures of the shuttle bus I looked at in Santa Clarita. It's a sexy beast or maybe it's just Sexy making it look sexy. It's worth $1,500 bucks just for the bike stickers in the windows alone.

Hell yeah! Any money spent on it would also be tax deductible. Like beer for 'events', welders, grinders, shakers and movers.....all deductible.

Keep in mind, I'm not trying to do any thunder stealing here. I think the bus and the warehouse are totally sperate ideas....aside from each being beneficial to the other.

Brassbuns had told me they were looking into warehouses a ways back, any word on that?

Eric, the problem with warehouse space is that it's mucho dollares.
If we have trouble raising 5K for a bus how are we going to raise 5K EVERY MONTH for warehouse space?

You need to live there or have a business there to make it work. It's a lot of money to be raised on a volunteer basis.

Well... these gals at sitela hustled Quicksilver to give them an awesome 3,000 sq ft space on Sunset and Alvarado.

I found a warehouse complex in Lincoln Heights (photos here if you are my flickr friend) that's very reasonably priced for LA (under 50c per sq ft) but it's still a shitload of money cause the spaces are so big.

Even classical micro economic theory, which is like a whole theory built to benefit sellers (suppliers), somewhat backs Marino's POV that auctions benefit the seller more than the buyer.

Man that's an awesome spot those ladies got! Yeah the only way to make the warehouse space cost effective is to make it a livable space too. I suggested before and I still like the idea or moving in trailers for living space. You could even go for a trailer that maybe questionable to being weather sealed if it's going to be under a roof. Regardless, moving in trailers allow peeps to have their own space and still have a warehouse space.

Hipster Alan,

I doubt a 60 year old bus would make reliable transportation but I thought that one could rent a 10K sqft warehouse and instead of building walls and subdividing the space into 'units" one could bring buses as the individual living spaces.

An indoor trailer park?

Marino,

This hipster bus sounds way cool. Too bad it's 240 miles away from me or I would check it out. The bus is at Templeton, CA. At a storage space. The owner is in Seattle and doesn't have the time to deal with it. Peeps at the storage place says it has leave cause they are remodeling. It's got to be gone by mid month. This can be had for next to nothing.

The bus is all aluminum body/frame. Inside is stainless steel and wood. It hasn't moved in 10 years. From talking to him, sounds like it doesn't need much to make it run. He has extra parts and the 6 inch thick manual for it.

He doesn't have extra pics to see. Too bad this isn't closer, I would have loved to check this out.
