The last 52 weeks were fucking awesome. We had our ups and downs.... Mostly ups. To the crew that stuck it out through the winter and got this bitch started..... Here we go again.
I would like to thank The Hustle Ride for giving me strength and shedding 30 pounds of garbage from my body.
I'm so glad I finally came out and tried this. I'm going to totally miss it the next two months while I'm in Europe but come 2008 I'll be there every chance I get.
So, this was my first Wolfpack and first group ride for that matter. I had the wonderful luck of getting a flat in the Tangs parking lot but I want to extend a big thank you to the entire pack for actually coming back to help me out before everyone took off. I never expected that.
Thanks for being welcoming Roadblock and special thanks to the Coach for fixing my tire and holding up the rear.
Definitely will be back next week and hopefully not suck as much.
congrats Sean on your first complete Wolfpack Hustle.... or did you cheat and cut down hyperion? haha j/k have a good time in Vienna see you when you get back...
Great effort last night! Hope to see you again, it might not seem like right now but it does get easier each time you try. Also you might want to invest in cages or clipless pedals. They will help tremendously.
i did on wolfpack a few months back when i was in no kind of shape, and needless to say i got burned. since then i've been riding to school every day, and and man, monday was effing fun fun fun. too bad i usually have class on monday nights. i might have to start driving to school on those days so i can make it to tangs in time, cuz i think im a little addicted to the go fast.
PS. This is the the one and only "Hustle" Ride. Biters need to become original. It's actually really really not that hard to be original. You know... name your fast paced ride something.... ORIGINAL
yo just posted on lafixed about people jocking the hustle ride.
i havent been with the crew since the beginning but ive been around long enough to see it grow and become what it is. you guys have made me faster than i could have made my self:
there have been a lot of "hustle rides" popping up all over So Cal lately. it kinda sucks. The Wolfpack started it and (in my opinion) all the other rides are just copying it. now there's a ride in riverside called the coyote hustle ride. THATS CRAZY!!! let the haters hate but EVERYONE who rides and finished every monday, rainy or dry, hot or cold weather, takes a lot of pride in the group and the ride. we are one of the fastest crews and pretty well known all over cali. i dont know how the other rides are run but come up with your own themes. if i am totally off base, feel free to come out to the REAL hustle ride and tell me.
Justin aka JT
okay just aside from the naming things after wolfpack.
I don't see anything wrong with starting other fast paced rides. I started the badger song because I was inspired by the wolfpack hustle. There you go. The badger song is not a hustle ride. It is the badger song, jtname. And, I would ask you respectfully to come out and ride with us.
it is fucking bullshit to think that riding on a fast paced ride, that isn't wolfpack, is 'just copying.' I understand that naming a ride after the wolfpack hustle might be a bit off. But, you are being egocentric and counter productive by talking shit to all of the other people who are riding fast, seating, and doing the hard stuff with their non-wolfpack crews at night. I rode with the wolfpack a couple of weeks ago on the century. It was intense. It was fucking beautiful. But, don't get all high and mighty about your ride, jtname. I ride hard with my crew every week, too. And we are not 'just copying. Had to say it. I'll leave it alone from here.+
if i am totally off base, feel free to come out to the REAL hustle ride and tell me
Drew said most of it for me. Thanks Drew.
Elitism is for the weekend warrior peacocks you see on PCH in Orange County, not Ridazz or people who love to ride bicycles for the pure joy of riding, whether they have "hustle", or not.
Okay, one more thing and then I am finished, for sure. Not trying to hijack the thread.
The whole name hijacking thing was first mentioned a while ago in this thread. And, although I am not a mind reader....I think the initial comment wasn't directed toward the riverside crew....they have been around for a while and they are fucking beautiful people (related to the awesome cycledelics crew).
I think the initial comment had to do with a ride that has started in NY (and is getting a bunch of attention). The New Yorkers have sotlen the Wolfpack Hustle's name and rep by openly saying that they are stealing the name. It isn't exactly the same name, but it's close. And, it is a weekly match sprint ride---not the same type of ride that we are discussing here. I am not mentioning the name, because I don't want to give them the satisfaction of being mentioned on this forum. Ups Wolfpack your guys are RAD!
On average, how many miles is a monday hustle and what time does it end? I live far away but would like to check this ride out sometime real soon...
Also Tern, I agree..I used to read about large groups in Germany pre-WWI that would gather on the weekend and put in some serious mileage as a standard weekend tradition. Going from city to city and trying to beat their times which led to races, etc. Much respect to the WP for definately putting in their time and effort to build up a strong LA county group...I guess you should all be happy knowing that you were quite possibly the 1st "hustle" in the area and others strive to be like you guys. Like any other individual trying to find themselves in this world, many and most will bite styles til they can find their own. Art and graf world is notorious for this as anyone can see in So Cal.
I personally would love to ride weekly with the pack and gain experience and strength from the group. But like I said above, I'm to far away which is why the City Assault was formed to create a fast paced ride to accomodate other riders in the area that couldn't make it your way as well. Anyways, good job and take it easy...
Hey, Juggernaut !. Nicely said, but we are not biting anything. We ride wolfpack. We ride cubcamp. we ride Polar Rollers. We ride Juggernausts. We ride fast at night. Badger Song. Fuck it.
Your ride has a HUGE potential, man. You are blessed. Let's make it fast and tight. You can gather a really amazing crew, if you do it right. Thanks for starting the ride!!
Just want to clarify that all the the furor is about the name and its use. I don't think anyone in the WP is opposed to other fast paced rides, in fact we support it. I've been to several fast paced rides and lent my support whether it was solicited or not.
Also the difference between using the Midnight Ridazz name and Wolfpack Hustle is using MR is encouraged. Wolfpack Hustle is more guarded. MR is us, a community of riders. Wolfpack is a specific group and the Hustle is it's ride.
There are several rides that were inspired by WP, Badger Song and Cubcamp are probably 2 of the more popular ones. WP did not oppose any of these rides. There might have been a request to change the name of one of the rides in the beginning ,since it sounded too similar but other than that nothing else was done.
Also, the WP is aware of origins. We know that we evolved from another ride called 10 at Tangs or Tangs at 10, that existed long before we were formed. What the WP founders did is intensify the ride and incorporated several other things that make it uniquely WP.
The bicycle has been around for a long time and the idea of fast rides is not new. Cycling groups are not an original concept either. All we are protecting is our identity as a unique group within the cycling community. Some of us might be overzealous but we paid our dues to be called members of the Wolfpack. Through 53 Monday painful nights many of us have formed a bond.
The WP does not exclude anyone either, anyone can join long as you can keep up and ride it consistently.
Part of what makes these fast-paced, MR-group rides fun is the crowd.
I just tend to go faster on a group ride as opposed to a solo, no matter what bike I'm riding.
My motivation is staying close to the front as possible, and not finding myself chasing the group.
wazzuupp wolfpackerinos!!! i'm riding this monday...i'll be the one in the front of the pack...with his skirt blowing in the wind, baring it all to the wolves behind me...
wow! i didnt say anything about fast rides. i love fast rides that arent the wolfpack. theres one in long beach that i go on every wednesday. i just think its un-original to name a ride the same name as another. its confusing and misleading. ive wanted to do the badger song since i found out about it but it was the same day as the hustle ride. i didnt mean to hurt anyones feelings and by no means were my comments pointed to the badger song ride. i have respect for EVERYONE who rides a bike fast. i think most people understood what i was getting at. people just need to come up with new stuff and not just copy what is already out there.
i don't really care about proprietary naming etiquette; however, there has been a lot of dissin on the "spandex peacocks", weekend warriors and so forth. i'm not really sure why. some people like to actually race their bikes for more than 2 min, and it's a look that's been in cycling for over 75yrs--for practical reasons. the TDF and Giro are probably the most intense athletic competitions in the world, so don't worship merckx on your t-shirts and then hate on the cat 4 who busts her/his ass all week to try to finish in the top ten in the crit. people love their bicycles and the sport in different ways. just because you like to go fast and COMPETE does not make you an asshole, and neither does protecting your nuts and taint. there was a nice ad slogan for some expensive-ass assos lycra in a recent cycling rag: "the bicycle is one of the rare human inventions that is used only for the good." i think most of us believe this, so lets get over ourselves, exercise some levity, patience, and good will, and be thankful (turduckin day is just around the corner) there are so many kickass people to ride with. now i am going to go slather diaper butter, as studio calls it, all over myself and dance nekkid to GWAR.
tTo PC and kyber (you are close to me, both of you), and all of the other people who are incredulous about all of the fuss....when you ride your bike with a group of people....when you ride as fast as you can for weeks on end....and you encounter injuries, citations, people shooting pellet guns at you, zero visability conditions on foggy, rainy mountain roads, people quiting because the HAVE to (for whatever reason) and not because they WANT to, you come up with a group of people that have no other choice but to have pride in their crew. We are coming up on a year's worth of rides pretty soon, too. And, I feel that I must protect this beautiful thing. The Badger Song. Just like the Hustle ride protecting their name.
I thought fast weekly rides were being called out, and out of honest appreciation for what my crew has achieved (and been through,) I had to say something. I misunderstood jtname's intentions in his post. I'm just trying to say....(not that any of you have) Don't fuck with us. We are proud of what we have created. We have to be.
The Wolf Pack Hustle ride started it for me. I saw their video with the AIR song, and I was inspired, but I couldn't make it out every week. So, now you have the Badger Song. We are small compared to the Hustle. Our crew is small compared to the Wolf Pack. But, we achieve. Consistently. And we are like a bike family. I will do whatever I have to do, within reason, to keep my bike family safe...to keep our name good. It may seem like bullshit to some people, but after riding for so many months, with all that has happened, there is no other choice for me.
all fast paced rides are dope as fuck. just fucking take one molecule of one brain cell and be original about naming your shit. it's not that hard and is much more rewarding being original. what fun would it be if there were no Cub Camps or Crank Mobs or Badgers or Juggernauts or Cruz With Us or what not? Thats part of the fun just like creating original spoke cards and ride themes. I didnt even hear about the NY heads biting... any links?
:NYC Rat Pack Hustle
New York, New York
NYC loves LA's Wolf Pack Hustle so much, we're giving 'em props by ripping 'em off! Every Monday night, starting at 8:30pm we're doing match sprint style races on the west side bike path up by riverbank state park (by 135th st). Riders go one on one and are timed in a sprint down a near-200m stretch of eerily abandoned (yet smoothly paved) Manhattan bike path. Plenty of prizes, shouting, side events and exhaustion ensue. Each participant is encouraged to bring a helmet and a headlight"
anyways....we are moving the Badger Song to Thursday night. A bunch of of us who have been on the hustle ride want to continue. Also, wolfpack can come out to our rides now. Sorry, Cubcamp, to bite your day, but we want to ride with you, too. We will make excursions, to your ride (like the last fucking intense Cub Camp Century)!!
Tern: You named your fast ride with an animal theme, and the Cubs named themselves after baby wolves because they were originally a training ride for Wolfpack. People could say that you and the Cubbies were "biting." Or they could say that you were paying tribute to the first big urban hustle ride in LA and spreading the tradition. Or, like most people, they could simply not give a flying fuck because they have more pressing matters to think about.
I'm still with Kyber on this one. Ride your bike and don't worry so much about what other people are doing or calling themselves. Have fun, take care of your friends, make your accomplishments. Sic transit gloria mundi>, guy. We'll all be dead in a hundred years, and I'd like to think that we'll have better things to talk about when we all meet in the next life than who had the right to use the word "hustle" in their bike rides.
"I don't think anyone in the WP is opposed to other fast paced rides,"
OMG best quote everrr! Best cuz as far as I can tell, it wasn't a joke.
And since when was Wolfpack something you were "in"? I always thought it was something people "did". Some Wolfpackers seem to be taking everything a little too seriously, no?
(sorry, just caught up with this thread and all the funnies.)
i'm sorry but being dead in a 100 years is the same mentality that has been keeping this country in a constant state of destroying everything in sight. and a pathetic reason not to give a a fuck...
inspiring fresh and new shit isfucking awesome... we don't have to keep imitating each other. not that i'm sayign there is anything wrong with imitation all together.
but if you are the one who wants to keep watering shit down until the source and it purities are so unrecognizable and the original concept completely lost then you are missing the beauty and the originality in the first place.
sure go ride and don't give a fuck, but i support those who are in the know to keep their soul pure. words, concepts and purity of essence can easily outlast 100 years.
I just want to say that there is no fuss with anybody who wants to ride bikes, women, men, children, families, pros, hos, dishwashers, even my own mother god bless her soul. The only problem was people using the name Wolfpack Huste, or just Hustle. There are other bike org, such as Mash SF, or Track Star Nyc, I sure they would not be stoked on a Mash LA, or Mash Ohio, or Trackstar Long beack, or maybe they would but I highly fucking doubt it. Just asking for people to come up with their own name for anykind of ride or crew or team, because we are Wolfpack Hustle, that created to Hustle ride. No problem with cubcamp, or badger song, or anybody many people who do wolfpack Hustle events or the rides do all kinds of community rides. The issue is just pick a different name its not that much to ask from a small community of dedicated cyclist, amd we can all live together and ride together till the day we all fucking die. Just with different names.
Also. No disrespect intended by the comment on the graphic. WP already has a strong, consistent visual identity working for itself. When I saw that on the announcement page it jumped out at me...
i dont think its very cool to be telling everybody what to do.
have you ever even ridden wolfpack?
Not yet. Monday night is always a working night for me. I'm looking forward to riding it, though. I'm assuming that not all of the regular participants have so much of their ego wrapped up in the name or the idea, and that there is some fun involved.
I was trying to include you (PC) and kyber in my statement because you are my friends and I like you guys. Its fun to brag about who your friends are. Okay, over and out. Back to the Badger Song thread with me, for real.
I'm wrapped up in the name, it took over 3 months for me to be a member of the Wolfpack.
I realize that there are some who just want to ride and nothing more, I can accept that. However, there are a those who do this ride week in and week out. The people who are there consistently have invested more than the ride time. They help and volunteer to promote and manage our events. Like any group the difficulty of the initiation seems to strengthen the bond.
There are many out there who criticize us and yet they have not been riding with the group consistently. There are one timers that seem to know it all and point out all our faults. For some it is a waste of time. You all are entitled to your opinions but you cannot deny that the WP has some appeal since you took the time to make a comment.
like Wolfrider said we never once complained about other fast paced rides because quite simply we never thought nor said we were the first to ride fast paced. in fact we congratulated and all that good feeling shit... didnt even see the naming of the other rides after animals as a bite being that half the cycling teams out there are named after animals.... Bearclaw Badgers Cubz whatever you may. love all you original thinkers out there, you make it fun to think of original ideas and make it fun to create our own identies and cultures in the way we ride.
biters on the other hand are akin to the corporates putting up a starbucks everywhere and calling it a day rather than actually thinking and creating your own uniquily named coffeeshop that reflects the community around you. pure corporate laziness... so PC when did creative individual thikning become the new SUCK?
No disrespect taken, I'm all for constructive criticism. I realized that graphic would of been more appropriate on a darker background after I put it up.
One more thing to consider about the Wolfpack Hustle and it's contribution to the community. When the Hustle started there were no fast urban rides in the area. They might have been small groups that would gather and ride fast but it's membership was limited. There were many start ups that fizzled. Most rides were MR type social rides.
Then the Hustle Ride enter the scene, it offered an alternative to those who wanted to ride fast (urban). The founders had a very clear vision which helped the ride grow. The Wolfpack and the Hustle have a very distinct edge to it. Many recognized this and started their own fast rides incorporating several WP ideas.
As this community evolves, fast paced urban rides will be common place. Members of the WP recognize this and we want to be recognized as a unique group in this community.
Creativity is grand, but novelty for its own sake is not much better than thoughtless imitation.
Let's say I wanted to start a fast-paced night ride down here in the harbor area, and I decided to call it...oh, let's say, the Hammerhead Hustle. The idea behind the name is to evoke the many hammerhead cranes that dot the sky here in the harbor, along with the badassedness (and maneuverability) of the hammerhead shark. Also, the creator of the ride (me) works near, and under, and in conjunction with, those hammerhead cranes. "Hammerhead Hustle" is pleasantly alliterative, and the use of the word "hustle" suggests, without having to spell it out to prospective riders, that the ride is structured along the same approximate lines as the Wolfpack in terms of time, length, pace, and terrain.
Sure, I could rack my brain trying to come up with something new! and groundbreaking! that nobody has ever! done! before! But why? It's a hustle ride. Why not call it that?
sc_nomad, good points. I see your angle, and the investment you put into it.
The "membership" thing could be a little touchy -- obviously there are some committed peeps that make all the cool shit happen: races, rides, planning all that. But the open atmosphere of the ride is pretty badass too. That anyone can show up and bust around the city with a fun group of peeps.
very simple. we feel we should be the only because we put the time and thought into conjuring up "The Hustle Ride" in order to be distinct from all other rides. we never called our shit an alley cat or a mass or ridazz because we wanted something to call our own. The Hustle Ride is in LA and it runs at Tang's at Ten. Everyone is invited no matter what.
over the past year the dedicated riders that have shown up over and over and helped with events, they are crew, family whatever you call it you got a spoke card you are crew. you ride with us and help us take care of this ride and you get a spoke card.
the main point is I would never steal or mimmick names like Sins and Sprockets, Armadillos, Trenways Fluffazz, Cruz With Us cause the FUN of it all is having a unique name. what the fuck thinks people can steal our shit?
Membership was probably the wrong word since there is no formal process. The only thing that would remotely pass as rite of passage is getting my spoke card after several weeks of being DFL, getting lost and 2 crashes. Painful but worth it. Some had it easier but the commitment varies.
when a ride like wolfpack hustle has changed your life possibly your entire view of this city and this world it is very difficult to explain to someone how strong the words have become.
I appreciate peoples attachment and conviction to the Wolfpack Hustle. it has become iconic to the urban cycling communities around this country. I know there is not nessecarliy a lot we can do when people start utilizing it for their own purposes.
but it is still imporant to stand up for its intent, the excitement, the challenge, the confidence and diversity this ride has instilled in Los Angeles cycling community.
as hobgoblin wrote I to love how anyone can show up to this ride and bust around with a fun group of peeps.
the range of people that show up at these rides is just too good to be true.
Team Bearclaw was formed before any of us knew about MR, the Wolfpack, or anything else of that nature. The animal name is coincidental, but badass either way.
Speaking of badass, 3 members of Team Bearclaw just purchased track bikes. It is rumored a 4th member is in the process of building a track bike. That means that 5 members of Bearclaw now have fixed geared rides.
We're all going to come out to the Hustle ride one night. We promise.
Keep having fun, because thats what it's all about (that, and getting ladies)
Sorry, I know this is super-duper important to some of you, and I'm truly not trying to hurt anybody's feelings or alienate anyone, but I just can't help laughing at this shit. Let's see: riding long distances, fast, late at night, on bad roads through sketchy parts of town, mixing it up with homicidal drivers and getting shit thrown at you? Sounds like every time I ride back to the harbor from a Ridazz ride. Only difference is, I don't have fifty guys to back me up if I get in trouble. Oh, and no spoke card.
Don't get me wrong. Wolfpack sounds like a lot of fun. It's just that you're fucking killing me over here with this "the few, the proud" crap. Come on, cut it out. I can't breath3$^^##$$#^$#%$^(*&(*(((((((
How is it that people such as the Cubs manage to be fast and strong without taking themselves so godalmighty seriously?
Roadblock: That Baldy ride was definantly an adventure. It was great to have you along.
We're probably going to do something like it again within the next few months. We're still waiting for the right time to make it happen again, except this time, we'll have below freezing temperatures instead of the 110 degrees we got last time.
Team Bearclaw will see you all on a Monday night in the very near future.
WOW. PC you might want to look up the definition of IRONY.
you also might want to re-read your posts so you can see how hypocritical you are. and how your posts in the forum are creating problems not solving problems.
it doesn't hurt to analyze your own "by the book" passive agressive statements
PC writes
"Sorry, I know this is super-duper important to some of you, and I'm truly not trying to hurt anybody's feelings or alienate anyone, but I just can't help laughing at this shit."
also, interesting tactic to bring up cubcamp. have you been on either wolfpack or cubcamp?
you're comparing these rides to riding alone after midnight ridazz, you honestly have no clue what you are talking about.
get off your computer and go to one of the rides sometime, see if you change your mind. then maybe your comments on this forum will make some sense.
..WP, not to sound like a big nerd but I'll try to start riding the hustle in a couple weeks when Heroes ends..sorry, i'm into comic books and super powers it's the only show I watch other than nature documentaries...
I live in Cucamonga right now and my lease is up pretty much at the end of the year, I'll be moving towards fullerton, brea, etc. area so it will be nice to be a bit closer than I currently am...
Riding through the fog was great, even though I almost crashed. I was riding towards to towards a blinking red light that turned out to be my flashers reflecting on a cars rear reflectors.
wow good reading...I agree with how passionate one must be while ... pursuing his or her... own.. woah its 4pm..
I PROPOSE A RACE!
THE WOLFPACK HASSLE RACE!!
The One Known As "I"
versus
The One Known As "PC"
from Tangs to PC's house (or apt (or box)) in Long Beach. Time must accomodate PC's frightening work schedule. No given route. Loser pays for PC's Free Haircut ($10). Team Sharecuts to donate prizes.
OK, srsly, I have to go to work now. I'll talk to you fuckers when I get back. Think of something more radical than paying for Borfo's sharecut, but less radical than ME GETTING A FUCKING SHARECUT.
PC if you look at my posts i'm not complaining about people stealing the name. but i do support the many people who give a shit and stand up for bicycle rides and concepts that inspired so many.
i hate pathetic people like you who sit in a cave and criticize riders and rides you have never even been a part of and obviously have no idea what they are about.
if you don't give a shit then why do you write so much ignorant trash?
"i" will race you. my counter offer is you ride your bike more and post less and that you attempt to create solutions instead of problems on this website. if "i" loses "i" will buy you drinks and dinner and pay for my own SHARECUT.
Hey I happen to be a fan of PC's ignorant trash!!! I happen to like someone that has their own opinion. Doesn't matter if I think it's right or wrong, PC speaks his mind! Which is a hell of alot better than people that hid behind a weak alias that no one has a clue who it is.
PC lives in San Pedro and I've only seen him once take a fossil fueled ride home! Being that he comes to quite a few rides, looks to me like he rides alot, at least in my book he does.
I got proposition to make! Loser gets a haircut from the winner and the loser looses their handle on here. Now that wouldn't keep you from coming back with another cleaver handle like maybe "u", but we'll deal with that when the time comes.
being that the wolfpack, isn't my ride, and I have rarely attended, or rarely finished when I did attend, I really have no business on this thread, but since so many of you who also had no business on this thread, did jump on board. I'm weighing in........
My first thought is what will be PC opinion about the name after he becomes a regular rider on wolfpack. I see PC becoming a regular wolfpack participant as something that is going to happen eventually. I predict his work schedule will most likely change for this.
A race between the two, why not? From i's picture, he/she does look to be taller, I would think that this may give i an advantage. Maybe, maybe not?
The stakes, FUCK NO! as somebody who has bought many of you beer with the money I was compensated for doing many peoples hair, this SHARECUT shit on PC is a definite "NO NO" , PC hair is way too cool, and it isn't easy to grow that out like that, whoever cut it last, did a fabulous job.
Borfo is his own man, but I really enjoy the few times he has come over, and I got to wack away at his hair. If he get another share cut, that is taking away from my art, and my own personnel happiness I get out of doing it.
I suggest a race from Tang's to my house. PC, i, User1, spiraldemon, city homo, skidmarcus and borfo will be the contestants.
If Borfo loses, everybody gets one wack on Bofo's ass for each minute he comes in after all the other participants.
If User1 loses, he will be forced to eat a big meal of his choosing and then has to ride all the way back home,.
If City Homo loses, he will be force to sit in a room with me for two hours while I tell him my views on life, or he has to read one of my diary for one hour straight.
If Skidmarcus loses, he has to tell me that secret I been trying to get out of him.
If spiraldemon loses, he will tell you this is the first time he has ever done this.
at the end of the race, and after the race dinner and drinks, PC and i, they will each have 15 minutes to convince, the other race participants, sexy and Uncle Nick, as to why they are the more elite riders, with a five minute rebuttal at the end. Whoever comes in first between PC and i, will decide who goes first in the debate.
after the judges have made their decisions and there is an event of a tie, Uncle Nicks will decide and his decision will be final.
The best part of this race will be, I'm not telling anyone where I live.
"i," can you at least quit crying until the race is over? Fixed gear race, by the way. I may be able to get access to a nice place in (yes, in) Point Fermin Park with an incredible ocean view (yeah, I know it'll be night, but whatever) that we can use as the endpoint of the race, and in which we can have a few well-earned beers afterward. I'll let you know tomorrow, via this board, whether I can get the place. If so, it will be next week on a weeknight, and I'll let you know exactly where the place is so that you can pre-ride the route if you want to.
Personally, I shall be training for the race by posting lots and lots of trenchant observations and incisive one-liners to Internet message boards between now and the night of the event. That's how you train for a bicycle race, right? I wouldn't know; I spend all of my time at the computer.
I happen to consider PC to be a bicycle comrade of mine. PC man, you're in the thankyou credits to one of our videos. I still thank say thank you.
Even though I feel he is off base on his criticisms of our ride I have to say that the guy does say what he thinks and I respect that. NONE of this is about elitism first and foremost so I have to say I would rather not see a race go down in order to see who is more elite but I would like to see the race go down as just a "for the hell of it" make friends type of ride. because seriously that's what wolfpack and the hustle ride have been about since day one. "this is not a race this is a hustle" is our slogan. people on this site and lafixed are ripping into our ride and yeah in retrospect its petty to even care if someone decides to start calling their ride a hustle. but it i what it is. We came up with the Hustle concept and obviously something about it rings with people in this city and other cities there's no stopping people I've realized. Myself and Wolfrider1 feel strongly about this concept that we've nurtured over the past 2 -3 years.... we still consider "The Hustle Ride" unique to us. but if people get out and have fun hustling then shit we support them too.
I put a metaphorical parentheses on this thread for this race. Sorry about earlier, Wolfpack. The Hassle belongs elsewhere than The Hustle.
y e e h a w
I would rather not see a race go down in order to see who is more elite but I would like to see the race go down as just a "for the hell of it" make friends type of ride.
Here's how it's going to go down: Eye and I are going to race, one of us (maybe me, maybe he) is going to get schooled, and then we are going to quaff beers at the lighthouse caretaker's house at Pt. Fermin. That last part is contingent on my getting the space, but me and this cat are going to quaff a few beers somewhere when this is over. No hard feelings either way, at least from me. Beers! Quaffed!
Per the name "hustle", and everyone else using the term to describe their fast ride-- I would be more flattered than anything, really.
It's similar to when terms are coined in any industry and they quickly become all encompassing.
Think "clorox", "personal computer", "windex", et al. It could be said that most people are able to point out the etymology of the term used to describe generic products such as "bleach", "home computer", and "window cleaner", respectively. And since this is strictly a non-for-profit operation, there is really no reason to take offense to someone borrowing a generic term used to describe a fast paced ride.
Keep in mind I'm not trying to detract from what you are doing, I ride cubcamp myself when I can make it, and I understand what it's like to be part of a crew. But it's important to remember that it's just a name... The fact that people want to identify with what you guys are doing means that you are all doing something right. Sure, you are the first and foremost (that we know of, at least) of hustle rides but don't let that go to your head.
nothing is going to our heads... the fact is we have a few items with two companies out already and intend to eventually produce more items for profit. that's one reason the name is something we are looking to protect... imitation is flattery which we just simply were caught by surprise that people latched on to what we're doing. I promise you though.... it's not about egos. it never was and hopefully never will be. We just love to blast around LA. if you can keep up no matter who you are... we will love you. if you are faster than us we will love you with special sauce . and if you get dropped we still love you for trying andd hope you come back to try again. some people show up 3 times before they can make it all the way. this is the shit we live for... honestly. ask around.... we're serious about riding fast and far and having a good time in the process. that's about it....
I think It's ok to make money doing what you love.... why not do something and live off it..... just dont get greedy or dishonest and if its not fun anymore do something else to make a living. What do you think of the guys who own Orange 20? or even the people that make bbicycle parts frames etc. the smaller companies obviously are more in touch but I bet almost every quality company started with people who enjoyed bicycling and are sick of working their regular jobs.... so yes, eventually it would be nice to make some well designed products and to profit from them. in the meantime if it doesnt happen I'm perfectly content riding The Hustle Ride and riding Midnight Ridazz and all the other unique rides out there.
what a treat to ride the Hustle ride with people who have practically become brothers and sisters in travels and problem solving and trust... to meet and ride with people like Cole Wise The Coach, the amazing Beatriz, studiodrome, Josh, Ian, Matt, Richard Adam Sean C. Troy RBI JT 93mm Steve Alex David Sergio Jack (who used to ride with us before it was called anything) etc etc etc and all the other friends and comrades too many to name... and to blast around with them in LA. fuck it. its a priceless experience. Cant wait to make it out to Cubcamp and C.R.A.N.K. MOB....
You can and will do what you want. Wolfpack hustle isn't a service or a product, that people will need. The only way I see you making money of it, is by putting the name on a product, that one may be may not need. It's like licensing the name. It's not really a product, it's just a name. Like when KISS put there name on everything they could sell, to make royalties off the name. What did they put there names on, cheap imported junk. Lots of this stuff is in people's closets in boxes, service really no point accept cluttering their lives. What the name was on, is beside the point. It was the name they where selling, not service and bikes, like at Orange 20.
Not to say those zipper hoodies where not a nice product, they are a nice, high quality American Apperal, sweat jacket and the print designs is fabulous. I even told you I considered buying one, but decided it would be posser like, to wear that, and not be part of the ride. Nobody disagreed with that, i'm sure your friend who was selling them might have made an excuse as why it isn't, but deep down he would probably agree. Let say I did buy one of those jackets, did I need another jacket? NO
I would have just been buying it for the design of the silkscreen on it.
yeah man thats your perogative. if you dont need anything of what we got then we're not gonna spam you and harass you to buy anything. so we have a few items and worked with a couple companies to put out collabs. if sales go good then the momentum builds and we'll eventually have the trust of companies to invest more of their resources to design something you might actually find useful...
Here is the truth, urban riding, or what ever you might choose to call it, is now mainstream. What was once an obscure genre of cycling is now in the forefront. All one has to do is look at the major bike manufacturers and see that everyone has a "fixie' or "urban" offering. Other bike companies that don't usually cater to urban riding(BMX companies) now have "urban/fixie"products. While one can argue that all bikes are can be urban, the products being produced are fairly new and have a very specific market.
Most bike shops now have a fixie section. Even high end boutique shops have something to offer that is specific to urban riding. Track bikes have always been available in these shops, but now parts that make there bikes streetable are also available.
Capitalizing on this trend is not necessarily bad. Several crews have done it and many of you have shown support. Take the MASH SF premiere, there were a few people in attendance and that crew is selling products. If the founders of the WP want to push a product, more power to them.
Even Jim at O20, whose primary reason for opening the shop is his passion for cycling, will concede that making a profit will ensure that his shop and the service it provides will continue. Take this site for example, it must cost Roadblock something. He's never asked for donations for keep it running and the are no sponsors that I know of. At the end of the day we all have to eat and feed this passion/lifestyle. Making money is not that bad.
XLarge has made some dope stuff with the Wolfpack Hustle name on it.
i know for a fact no one from the wolfpack is making big bucks off of it. i also know that all but 1 Wolfpack race has been free to enter and the winners usually come away with Hundreds of dollars worth of gear.
"Go ahead and switch your style up and if they hate, let them hate just watch the money pile up!!!!" - 50 cent/Kanye West
I just want to say that I am thankful for all the people who have pedaled their asses off, let me draft off their back tires, gave me a tube, came out to the events, showed me how to be a better rider and it may sound crazy a better person. Roadblock, she-wolf, the coach, studiodrone, j-tme, wise, mike bike, troy, ryno, chris, josh, super cole, richard, all the people at ambiguous, frank, jason berg, drew, Xlarge, and everybody else who has been putting in work to make to world a better fucking place, seriously thank you.
WR1,
I agree with you about how the WP has made us better riders. A year ago, many of us didn't know how to ride in a pack. Aside from traffic, my biggest fear was riding in the pack itself. Working together as a group was foreign to many. Many did not follow or even knew the basic protocols of group riding.
Now we ride as a peloton, pushing our speeds faster and distance farther than we could individually. Riding three abreast down Riverside, Santa Monica or Washington close to 30 MPH is not uncommon. Bumping shoulders at this speed doesn't cause the panic it once did. I am happy to be part of this transformation. It wouldn't be possible without the group who consistently make it out week after week. Thanks all.
oh hells yeah. when i did my first wp two weeks back i was scared as shit about riding in a pack. my only group experience up until that point was the drunken mob mosey that is ridazz. two hussles later, the thrill of hauling ass as a group is what will probably make me a monday night regular.
And to those who haven't ridden the Hustle yet, come out and join us. If your not accustomed to the speed and proximity of other riders, ride in the back with me.
I'm easy to spot since I'm that one always telling people to 'hold your line' or 'pick a wheel'. It might sound mean at times but a careless move at speed can take out several riders.
But once you get the hang of it, it is a pretty amazing experience. Just imagine sitting in the middle of the pack going 30 mph and barely spinning your pedals.
as with anything that's original there will always be biters. what the hustle has done is created a truly all city ride and vibe that others wanna emulate. can you blame them? hell nah...but just be original about it.
when i look back at the early days of the hustle and to see what it has evolved into now i can only offer the highest respect to all the cats who kept it moving. but that's the beauty of it...everybody has a chance. if you can keep up with the pack then props...if not, then it'll give you something to strive towards. but like roadblock said it's been an honor to meet and ride with people like cole, troy, studio, wise, supa, city hob, scnomad, richie, hayden, alex and all other pack past, present & future.
arooo for SuperCole! Cole gets to map the next ride... how about a new tradition, when it's you 52nd consecutive... whomever you are, you get to map that nights route. I think Wise may be in the running next....
Wise has been to more Wolfpack Rides in the past year than anyone. Congrats to Supercole for always showing up but i don't know just something about that guy...
it's the mustacio! I think Wise has only missed one ride? gotta keep us all updated on when his 52nd is so we can have Wise make the map. That's gonna be scary...
My 52 should be late December since I missed 5-6, maybe less. My route will be the anti century ride, We will ride 1 mile or 1 kilometer and it will be super slow. Expect to be back at Tangs at 3:30 am. Maybe not.
I think that a small detail is slipping through the cracks here my friends.... Cole is on his 52nd week STRAIGHT. consecutive.... ongoing... never stopping... I think it's the Mustache....
Ahem, IAMTRAFFIQUE, I believe you mean you haven't missed one in 49 weeks. New Years Eve is my 52nd consecutive ride and my 55th Hustle with the 'pack. I think you started one week after me, but who's counting. Oh, wait...I am (but only because I specifically set out to do a straight year of hustlin'.)
i think im gonna have trouble making three in a row. im stuck here at school and it looks like im not gonna be out in time to make it tonight. lameness.
Thanks for the kick in the arse peoples..
I was going to say something along the lines of cherries and popping but I'm too tired to be witty and/or crass.
Thanks for making my n00bishness uh.. shit.. I'm going to bed..
Mr Rollers,
If I knew you'd cut-out early I would have joined you. We could had started the Wolfpack Shuffle, a ride for the old-slow-people-who-didn't-get- the-memo-that-bicycles-are for-kids.
My knee been bothering me all last week might be a touch of arthritis.
The Bici is Back.
I need some hustle.
bad.
Hopefully I will solohustle enough this week so i don't get dusted next monday.
Speaking of hustle...
Consider I (heart) NY
It was done for free for the city of NY
by Milton Glaser It is now an institution bitten by just about everybody in everypart of the known universe.
it is that classic.
I think hustle is also classic. And mark my words, we will see hustles happening all over the world in the next few years ...
at that point it wont be "biters" it will be "my children ... thanks for kepping the the muthafuckin' hustle alive."
hustle on.
ride on.
SC, when we got to Colorado & Fig just as everyone was already taking off for the Rose Bowl I thought to myself, "No way!" I was pretty well knackered at that point and I knew that hill up Colorado would do me in.
I had a nice ride back down Figueroa, through downtown and back to Echo Park . . . lovely night for a ride. Made it home by midnight, bed by one a.m. and I was able to get up for work this morning and still walk.
Maybe shoulda said "befrore midnight", but true, I wasn't Hustling (tm) or trying to keep up with The Wolfpack. I did stop for a red light or two, slowed down when I passed the taco stand, and took a leisurely cruise through Echo Park to look for rats and herons, but I still averaged 14.2 mph for the evening.
Remember, if anyone gets sucker punched by some chump-change Minnesota Motherfucker in a red pick-up truck-post Wise kicking the shit out of his grill. . .we Pounce. no questions asked.
Ahhh, to go back 52 mondays ago.
Fun ride tonight, I enjoyed my first Wolfpack Hustle. I don't think I can make this a regular thing with it being across town from me and other time commitments, but I'll try to make it out every so often. Me go bed now.. I'll post ride data from computer tomorrow.
Fwoar. That looks like a sexy ride. I think I'll probably join the cubbies a few more times before trying out the hustliciousness. Just to be really sure I can keep up on my two wheeled urban assault vehicle.
Sweet Baby Jebus! We did that? Thanks for The Mustache Ride! Thanks for making me chase y'alls when me chain broke. I just ordered some new legs from Orange 20. Hopefully they will be here by next week.
yo the wheel is at the bike shop. they are ordering new spokes for it straight from Campy. some how that wheel actually stayed some what true for the 15 mile ride to tangs.
you guys are sum bad azz mofos!!! i rode with y'alll on monday night and got lots of support from the the pack.....sure i was the last one but i finished.....aaaaaaoooooooooooooooooooo
I finally got around to checking the elevation on my ride home last Monday. 1200 ft. in 10 miles, for which I was already dead tired from the MUSTACHE. Four hours sleep and another ten miles to school the next morning with everything aching. I have got to get my car fixed.
That ride kicked my ass. Bummer about the horrific number of flats, but racing a few of you up Nichols Canyon was one of the most exhilarating things I've ever done on my bike.
What an amazing view. (the SKIII does it no justice)
That Nichols canyon climb was so murderous but damn what a reward rideing the rollercoaster back down to hollywood with those amazing views.
Superprops to those on fixies.
Goddammed legs of steel.
Wolfrider1 and Roadblock, You've outdone yourselves once again! The route last night was amazing, I look forward to seeing how S_C_Nomad's helmet footage turned out.
I took a moment at the top to look towards downtown (I had to PISS like a motherfucker) and it was so beautiful out. surreal to think that an hour or so before we down amongst those buildings and now up top looking down there. I wish I had my camera. that nichols canyon seemed more hurtful this time around I think because we did it last rather than first....
I rode ahead of the pack hoping to video them going down Mulholland, but except for a fast group of 8. Then every rode by in ones and twos. It wasn't bad though since I got a chance to enjoy the view.
This was my first WPH and I had a blast, dispite the extended stops.
I am so glad I left my one speed at home. My helmet is off to all you singles and fixies!
yeah the stops were insane. we've gone for weeks without flats so I guess it was the law of averages catching up to us.... good to see the SLO heads out thanks for the schmokes and good to see Carla out there and Cubbiezz
beautiful ride last night. will be bringing videocam next few many many rides as well so feel free to ask for interview, shots of sexy bike skids, shots of sexiness bicycle pedaling or possibly whatever your heart desires.
On my way home at 2:45am I sprinted to catch up to some blinky lights heading west on Fountain, only to discover it was just some random roadbiker and not a Wolfpacker.
So it was pretty wild that around 3:00am, while descending on Cahuenga Boulevard West into the SFValley, I ran into Carla and Wayne heading back to the 323. Good to see that they were safe and had stopped to eat since we never saw them come out of Nichols.
I couldn't leave Carla out there by herself. So we came up Nichols Canyon and she didn't feel comfortable riding down the mulholland squigly downhill. So we wound up going down Laurel Canyon and into the valley. OMG was it cold. i'm talking at least 10 to 15 degrees cooler than hollywood. After freezing our asses off going down Laurel canyon we turned on Ventura and stopped at Dupars. 4 cups of Hot chocolate and Some Hot food, bathroom. Oh mann, u have no idea. then we headed back out into the cold for the ride home. Brutal, brutal I tell ya. got home around around 3a.m.
...and major-fucking-serious-over-the-moon-big-time props to Studiodrome. IGNITE! If you couldn't tell last night, I'm so very damn happy for you.
So yes, bring that vidcam out for more rides! Though I love the fact that it exists and got aired, I get a little bummed whenever I watch that Current TV Wolfpack piece because I think someone else (ex-pecially a true WP rider) could make a much better docu and I'm hoping this means that person might be you.
This ride was soooooooooooooooo much fun. Thank you for scouting such an awesome route. I had never seen such a beautiful canyon at night the sides of it, the sounds of animals shuffling through trees, lots of stars and sweat. One more thank you to Mindfullofmusic: for such awesome and kind help on the way down. And thanks B. for reparing my flat by cleaning the metal shards out of the wheel.
Big Ups,One love.
hey Carla and Wayne just so you guys know we did wait for about 15 mins or so and I back tracked but figured you guys had turned back... glad you had a good time and that things worked out.
two wheels good,
i could tell you were stoked thanks for the congrats i'm very happy as well. I'll post more info about IGNITE hopefully soon. And i'll work very hard to capture some vid on the wolfpack, though it is seriously a difficult and umm exhausting task.
Indeed, my hat goes off to you cause every time I see you shooting, you're riding faster than me AND operating a camera. I don't know how you do it, cause the shots always end up looking great to boot.
Hey roadblock, no worries man. when we got up to mulholland I told her what to expect and she didn't feel comfortable going that way. So Plan B went into effect. Thanks!
Actually, Don, it was going to be a joke. But now I'm going to make sure there's a group of carolers waiting to save your eternal soul when you get back next week.
Mark your calendars!
It's a Wolfpack Christmas!
There's going to be a mixture of old fashion carols, Josh Grobin sing a longs, and Trans Siberian Orchestra. There will be eggnog (vegan option as well), scarfs, swaddled babies, yule tide feelings, and a possible Santa sighting (pulled by 8 roadies, of course). It's serious business.
As for tonight, the 17th of Decemberween:
What's this about a wet burrito? There's burritos?
Didn't expect the turnout to be as big as it was last night. Maybe I AM TRAFFIC shouldn't had said through rain. wind or snow, or whatever he said, and guilted us to going. But I was really glad I rode.
My glasses are scratched, thanks to an impromptu trip down the Gutter River. Lame. But man, that was fun. Thanks to Wayne and Rich for trying to find Dennis and I!
Im so bummed I missed this one. got in from vegas and needed SLEEP. I actaully woke up to the sound of the pack riding past my apartment though honking horn and howls... then back to beddy bye. BUMMED.
Thanks markedge for riding with me. Normally I don't mind riding at the back of the pack but I really appreciated last night. It just seemed that the drivers were a lttle crazier last night.
Rain! Big ups to everyone who rode hard and got put away wet. I learned a lesson on riding in the rain, two socks is a mistake keep it thin and you will be much better off. I cant wait till christmas eve to ride the streets and find myself out of breath in pain and hanging on to the back of someones tire. For all you that are that will be at home with your loved ones merry christmas, happpy hanakuh, happy kwanza, bitches.
Heads up. A fierce wind has started blowing through Santa Monica. I'm not sure how much other parts of LA are being effected, but it's the sort that's knockin shit over and I imagine there will be tree branches coming off into the street if it it gets any worse.
Well, I have no idea where you guys went from Barham, so I just swung down Cahuenga into Hollywood and then straight to my place in West Hollywood. Lesson learned. I'm not yet ready to ride TO the ride. And falling off the training wagon sucks. I feel like I'm starting over.
Hey Sam we saw you roll left a cahuenga off barham. well we werent totally sure cause the gas station was about half block donw. we were yelling and honking. you were gone pretty quick with momentum from the barham downhill. too quick to chase. sorry we missed you.
Hard, WINDY, and crazy ride last night.
Wolfrider1 getting doored on Sunset.
Richard (twowheelsgood) getting into a half-wheel situation near downtown and the resulting drivetrain mangling he recieved as a result.
And my foot coming off the pedal on a climb which resulted in a very nasty ankle tweak (plus I nearly put my foot into the front spokes!)
Thank you very much Don for being alert and concerned for my well being when that shit happened.
Also thanks to all who drove us onward to victory.
Good ride, good hustle, good times
PS-@ideasculptor
Don't get too down on yourself..
Getting dropped off WP is practically an initiation rite.
Hang in there and you'll see.
It gets easier every time.
Well, I wasn't bothered by being dropped at all on my previous attempts, but last time I came out, I was actually hanging with the group when I got a flat, so I felt like I had been making progress. I spent November and December variously getting a cold, then moving, then traveling for work, and that combo did me in. I had hoped that the fact that most of my recent miles were on a fixie would make up for the fact that there weren't all that many of them, but it didn't work out like that. I've got better speed now, but my stamina is gone.
As for missing you guys at the top pf Barham, it all worked out for the best. Last time I got dropped, I was also pretty thoroughly lost and it was an expensive cab ride back to hollywood. This time, I got a nice descent right back to my front door in WeHo, and since I had ridden to the ride start, I got some reasonable miles in anyway.
Funny thing is, I didn't even look around for you guys at the top, since I'd already stopped to figure out where I was via google maps on my phone. I just assumed you were long gone by the time I figured out a route home. Live and learn.
I just looked at the route map - The rest of the ride was all on roads that I'm intimately familiar with from my commute. I probably could have hung with you guys from Barham after all, though I surely would have exited early rather than head downtown.
To be honest, after looking at the map on my phone, I was a little concerned, given the distance we'd already ridden, that we were going to stay on that side of the hill for a while, and I just didn't have the legs for another major climb. Looks like I needn't have worried.
What up ya'll. Happy New Year!!!...the ride tonight will NOT be hard and will finish up in time to get your new years groove on with that special, or not so special person in your life. We might finish the ride downtown so keep that shit in mind.
01-07-08
check it. meet me at 8 p.m. Pureluck for dinner and drinks. then roll with me to Wolfpack, or meet me at Tangs at 10.
if you've never been to Wolfpack then this is a good time to break your cherry. I'll probably be drunk and riding slowish. if you're really slow ummm...
Hopefully it will be raining hard still so wear your slickers.
Damn, Ive missed 2 weeks and I hate it. while I was in Hawaii I saw this on the ground. i know wolfpack was getting into making cycling clothes and gear but fireworks?!? i had no idea. LOL see ya on Monday!
I'm back in LA. Which means I'll be back in the pack. Bike riding in europe for the last 2 months has been less than ideal what with the snow and borrowed bikes but I've been getting out when I can, that said I'm thinking I'm going to suck Monday, but I'll be there regardless. I turn 33 end of February, so if I can get back to where I was when I left in November by then I'll be psyched. I've been missing this ride more than anything, can't wait to get back to it.
Also gonna mess with my gear ratio to get a higher top end speed to see how much that helps. Right now running 48/16. Anyone have any personal fav ratios?
Good (part of a) ride last night.
Hope you all had fun in Pasadena.
I had fun going home from Downtown.
Now, I'm going to get a bunch o stitches removed.
Just wanted to suggest this route:
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1562072
We've never done the Sepulveda Pass..
Something new, something different?
It's really well graded going up from Encino.
And there is a bike lane.
Plus bike path around Griffith Park
And bike lane across Santa Monica Bl.
And at 36 miles it's not too crazy bananas.
Anyone?
"^^ Wouldn't the diameter of the headtube determine the size of the steerer tube?"
What's the diameter of a Pista headtube? Either way, I *think* you can adapt a 1 1/8 headtube to accomodate a 1" steerer tube. Obviously you can't go the other way.
we have gone up Nichols Canyon from hollywood side crossed Mulholland then gone down Laurel Canyon to the valleyside. By the way tallcans4tallbikes when you wanna shoot the footage?
there is probably a better thread for this but...
are we MOUNTAINEERZZZZING out fullerton way tomorrow or what?
the lizard's phone isn't working, and i don't have rich or dennis'. what's the deal y'all...
and totally unrelated:
also do we have the requisite number of tandems for the race yet?
beat the rain:
so i doesn't look like we will be off-roading tomorrow--too sloppy.
so if anyone wants to beat the rain and hit the pavement tomorrow morning, i'm up for any route. i'll try to post something by the end of the night if there are no other ideas.
so if yr just sittin around now wishin you had posted a ride because yr lonely, bored, feeling fat, and you are having recurring nightmares about my pink aerospoke, there is still a chance for you. lizard and i are riding from franklin and la brea @ 10:30 (which means you have almost an hour to get there freeks) up nichols cyn, to the valley to meet rich, and from there to topanga and where ever the wind and legs take us. last chance bitches.
Lost my wallet on last night's ride....... Got back to Tang's,reached for my wallet t buy donuts and hot chocolate and no wallet. The last time I saw it was at the first stop when I bought Vitamin Water. Double checked in and around the car just in case it fell out of my pocket when I took my jacket off but no wallet.
Called my bank and credit card companies to cancel cards. Wolfrider1 and Bea suggested I try to retrace the route.
We drove directly to the first stop, where I last saw my wallet. It was on the cashier's counter while I was talking to Sean. I spoke to the cashier and he did not see it. He remember a group of cyclists but no wallet.
Then Bea and I slowly retrace the route taking special attention to the places where I rode out of the saddle. I thought or sure we will see it on the climb to suicide bridge but there was nothing there.
We rode through Old Town Pasadena and made a right on Fair Oaks. There was nothing on the road. The recent rains washed out the gutters and the road was very clean. We could spot debris as far as the truck's headlights would permit.
We made a right on Huntington drive and saw nothing. I was riding close to front of the pack for most of this section so I didn't look too closely since someone in the pack would had seen my wallet if it fell out of my pocket.
Then we made a right off mission and headed toward Lincoln Park. It was dark in this section and there were a lot of fallen palm leaves. Also, I was towards the back so we slowed down considerably. But still nothing.
We made a right on the Cesar Chavez bridge and slowed down at the stop point but we didn't see anything. It was quickly becoming an exercise in futility. I was ready to go home but Bea was still optimistic.
We traced the route through Broadway then right on Second into the tunnel. The tunnel had more debris than the roads, most of it settling towards the middle of the road. We rode slowly through the tunnel. I paid special attention to the row of makeshift tents looking for any sign of celebration of new found wealth, but the homeless were sound asleep.
Towards the middle of the tunnel, Bea and I were focusing on the middle of the road when something caught her eye on the right gutter. She caught a glimpse of something square in the gutter. We past it 30 feet back. Bea asked me to backup but there were cars behind us so we had to wait. And there it was right across from the homeless, in the gutter..... a sock.
Disappointed and tired I sped out of the tunnel. I told Bea that we will trace our steps through Beverly and Rampart and if we don't find anything we will go back to OC. No sooner than me saying that, there in the middle of the right turn lane, in the end of the tunnel, in plain site, lying on it's end like a pitched tent was my wallet. We almost ran it over.
I slammed on the brakes and jumped out. I expected the worse, I had $350 in cash and checks in the wallet but I was happy that I didn't have to go to the DMV and get a duplicate license. As I picked up the wallet and everything was in there.
Man it was my lucky night. Thanks to Bea's persistence and a whole lot of luck my wallet and I are happily reunited.
So bummed, had a meeting run late last night and didn't get home until 9:45, knew by the time I got to Tangs the pack would be gone. See you next week...
kinda funny to see our article in roadbike action last night at famima... as lackflag said "first we ride on wolfpack hustle then we read about wolfpack hustle"
Yea, congrats Dennis.
Good job Bea.
That's a heck of a find.
I wondered why you guys jetted so abruptly..
My Story:
I got a ticket on my bicycle tonight.
Ran a red on Hollywood Bl and noticed the piggy too late.
And of course - County Seat Bitch -
I'll do the speedy trial and walk, but still a trip.
It really is a special treat to ride with a big group/mob.
And especially special to ride with you guys on the Hustle.
yo im happy u got ur wallet back Dennis. good thing Bea kept a positive outlook. that shit sucks when u lose stuff, ESPECIALLY ur wallet. Great story too. See u next time.
She_ Wolf (Bea) raced Saturday in Santa Barbara. She raced 2 races Pro 1/2/3 and 3/4.
The Pro 1/2/3 had a field of 20 racers. Bea raced alone while most had teammates. The team to beat was a team of three very experienced racers. There were many attacks early in the race but none stuck. With 6 laps left in the race Bea attacked and was in a break of 3. They pulled away from pack quickly and it looked like it was going to stick. The girls worked together and the gap got bigger and bigger, almost 3/4 of a lap. The finish was a sprint with Bea coming 2nd to a 3 time national champion.
Bea's second race started about 1 1/2 hours after the first. It was a 3/4 race with a field of around 35 riders. The race was uneventful for the first few laps. The promoters decided to shake things up a liitle by offering a prime.
A prime( pronounced preem) is a prize offered in the middle of race for a designated lap. The prime was $30 and a pair of shoes, Bea goes for the prime and wins it. The momentum of her sprint took her about a 100 yards from the pack. She led the next 5 laps in the lead and won a few more primes.
Bea finally got caught with 6 laps to go. She sat with the pack and recovered until the last 100 yards where she sprinted from 6th wheel to win the race.
As many of you know Bea uses the Wolfpack Hustle as part of her training regimen. I hope this will encourage some of you to race since you guys are fast enough. BTW I saw Bill from the Wolfpack at the races he raced earlier that day.
there's a few WP riders who race and place regularly. some of which ride independntly and others who ride for teams... would be cool if we could set up a notification system that would get the word out on upcoming races so people can show up and support!
"Would be interesting if a whole bunch of wolfpack riders "swarmed" an organized race, and registered as "non affiliated" cat 5..."
I had brought this up last year, but it went nowhere. I think a
Bad News Bears race is exactly what the Wolfpack needs. Throw on your stretchy pants, Helmets and racing face and get on it!
For this monday, The post says...."all city los angeles, south east. " And, I saw the graphic of the google map.
Is next monday's ride a century or some other sort of special ride?
i don't know about the spoke cards...i want black kits with a big yellow TANGS DONUTS logo on it. there are a ton of races comin up. sunday there is a crit out in brea that i know sc_nomad will be at. on the 17th there's a TT that i'm doing. and at the end of the month there is a crit in ontario. and this is only the beginning of the season. i also heard kyle say something about jim actually trying to get a team going, so drop that PAA shit, wise, and howl.
I'm pre-registered for the CBR crit on Feb 17th as Cat V unaffiliated. This will be my first sanctioned race event. I'd be down to ride with anyone who'd like to join me.
If a bunch of Wolfpackers are really going to do a USCF race I would suggest the LA Circuit Race. The great thing about doing a circuit race as your first race is you don’t have to deal with that pesky thing called cornering as much as in a crit. Believe me making 50-70 turns at 25 mph one after the other is a F*%$ing pain.
^^^^^ I agree with Wise. Also it gives WPers a month to get ready. The prospective racers should try to ride together as much as possible during the Hustle Ride to determine strengths. WP can definitely win the LA Circuit race but only if it is done as a team.
Beatriz (She_Wolf) raced at the Roger Milliken Memorial Race in Brea today. She signed up for the Women's 3/4 and Pro 1/2/3 race. B's strategy for the day was to save her energy by not going from primes and concentrate on winning.
The 3/4 race started uneventfully. Nick and I started to walk against the direction of the race course to take pictures of the racer in the roughly mile long course. Took pictures of B in the first and second laps but I did not see her in the third lap. Since the field was move pretty fast, I was hoping I just did not see B because she was riding on the other side opposite of where I was walking. 2 other laps passed and B was not in the field.
I started to see other people running toward the backside of the course, a sure sign of a crash. Nick and I walked as fast as we can towards where everyone was gathered. There were a few racers milling around attending to their scrapes and scratches. One was on the ground being attended to by First Aid. B was not there neither was her bike. I suspected the worse that she got taken to the hospital. We asked a few people and no one has seen her. Finally the course official said that one racer was walking her bike back to the start/finish. He also said that she was OK but the bike was pretty messed up.
The Pro 1/2/3 was a pretty big field with several teams with multiple members. Helen's Cycles and Rock Racing had at least 6 members each; B raced alone. Without any teammates B's strategy was to sit towards the front of the pack covering any potential attacks that might stick. She had her work cut out for her since the attacks came fast and furious. With 5 laps to go you can tell that attacks were taking a toll on B. She hang in the top 10 until bell lap(last lap). On the bell lap the field started to go faster. On the final turn B was in great position for the sprint. 50 yards to the finish half pack was in contention. One by one the racers blew up. B finished a strong third. A great effort by B after a really nasty crash.
Again Bill was there and he finish 9 or 10 but let him tell his story.
three things:
1) i already wrote in B for prez on the fifth (you had to be registered in the wolfpack party primary)
2) i love that foto of don on the tandem with the braided hottie. sly like a fox.
3) can we go to the velodrome tonight? there's a trak race on the 17th
Forget training for the WPH, just come out and ride with us. The Hustle is training. The only way to get faster is ride with the group. Don't worry about getting dropped cause it will probably happen the first few times but it gets better. The longer you wait, the faster the pack becomes. Join now while some riders are starting to wind up for the racing season.
So, I spoke to some people who rode with the Juggernauts a few, months back.
They told me the Juggernaut ride was a little slow compared to the Hustle's they've been.
We usually maintained between 15 and 25 mph, when it came to average, overall speed.
I'm in no way trying to instigate, or in any position to start a faction war. So let's not let it get to that.
My question of the day is how fast of a speed do you guys normally maintain throughout the ride?
15-25mph is a fairly, decent speed with the "truck-inspired" low-gearing, on my mtb.
But, the persons I spoke with made it sound like you were pulling 30mph+.
Not impossible, but I've only been able to keep that up in short bursts over small distances.
I do have Monday nights off, so I may come down and try this a, few times.
Only reason I haven't already considered participating in this is due to the fact that I lean towards driving down for the 200+ party-rides.
Aside from that, anyone else do this on mountain bikes, or is it going to be like, "F-22's vs. AC-130"?
Ya dude, getting dropped will actually kill you. It's killed me every single time. Luckily I'm Irish and thus stubborn as hell so I come back dead only to get dropped again and again. Woot!
As I might've said it before, the hills aren't going to kill me.
It's the long, flat stretches where my mtb hits the red and I get smoked by the 700c/54t-people.
Not much of a roadbike/fixed-gear person anyway.
If I really felt in the mood to drop people, and it had to do with equipment, I would just go with an Actionbent Midracer recumbent.
Speed and comfort in one, reasonably priced, package.
Hell, it'll save me enough to get hooked up with that stat-system y'all keep mentioning.
Shape-wise though, I'm not exactly Tour De Splat, but I'm not walking up hills either.
It probably can be done on a mountain bike if you have adequate warm-up. The thing that kills me most on the ride is my lack of warm up. The faster riders ride to the meet point and probably gone through a couple of lactic cycles. They are ready to go as soon as the route is announced. Though we try to start slow, we almost never do for very long. If you can't go through the cycle of building lactic acid and flushing it through the first few minutes of the ride, it will be a long painful night. The fact that I am probably 20 years older than the average rider doesn't help though at least 3 of our faster riders are over 40.
I clearly need to research this lactic cycle thing a bit more. I can see the patterns of when I hit walls and I'm sure there are ways to avoid that or improve it or something. I've never participated in any kind of group athletic activity like this in my life so it's all brand new to me.
Simply warming up and stretching will help a lot too. Riding behind RB is probably the best tip I can give anyone, the man is a freight train. Riding in the pack is so much easier than trying to keep up.
Stretching is something I almost never do.
Maybe when I'm at the gym and doing some weight-lifting, but that's about it.
As far as the keeping up part goes, I'll just go with the fact that 38/28/18t is too, damned small to flatland-spin for a lengthy amount of time.
Another incentive for myself not to get dropped is that I'm not entirely, familiar with that area.
Fall away from the pack and I become a lone, cargo ship in foreign waters.
B raced the Valley of the Sun (VOS) stage race this weekend. A stage race is a series of races (stages). The stages for this race was a time trial, road race and a crit.
Time Trial:( Friday) This was B first time trial and didn't know what to expect. She also raced on her road bike with clip-on aero bars. She finished in the middle of the group.
Road Race:(Saturday) The race was a 58 miles with a long climb leading to the finish. The pack stayed together for most of the race with an occasional attack but nothing stuck. It was on the last climb that I expected the teams to attack to happen but the pack stayed together until the last 200 meters. It came down to a sprint. With everyone battling for position, some riders crossed wheels and several riders crashing. B found herself in front of the crash and sprinted for second.
Later that evening we got a call telling us that the first place finisher was relegated for crossing the yellow line (yellow line rule). B was declared the winner.
Crit: The crit was 40 minutes long in a figure 8 shaped course. Again the pack stayed together for most of the race with a couple of attacks that the peloton eventually caught. Again it came down to a sprint, B had to fight through a crowd to finish 2nd. If you ever wondered why the Wolfpack sprints the last hundred yards to Tangs, this is why. All the nights sprinting against all the fast Wolfpack riders paid off.
Overall, B finished at 16th though she won the 2nd stage and came in second in the 3rd stage., It was also her first race as a Cat 2 racer, she finally got her upgrade.
Let me know if I should still be providing race updates. I just think it is relevant since B raced her first races filling in Wolfpack as her team name.
Considerably less exciting then B's exploits, but I had my very first sanctioned race this Sunday, a criterium. I placed 13th in a field of 50 which I was pretty happy about considering I'm still getting over a cold. Was coughing my lungs out after the final sprint. It was a lot of fun though and I'll be trying this again for sure, hopefully in better health next time.
Props to Cubcamp and Wolfpack for inspiring my need for speed and providing excellent training.
I'm not too excited about it being a Crit, I'm more interested in Road Races and Stage Races, never the less I have to start somewhere. As Wise said, turn after turn at 25mph is worrying.
I'll be in Ontario at 6 that morning. My nephews race at 7am and B races at 9:45. Don't know how long we will be there after their races because of the Tour of California is also coming to town.
I bailed for many excuses/reasons after the 7-11 on Franklin and Vermont, the biggest being that I'm still recovering from the flu and I had to get up at 6. But holy fuck, can we please ride through UCLA more often? MOST FUN ROUTE EVAR!!!!!!!
@xpc: The frequency of LANs has rolled off as i have moved through and out of college.
@everyone else:
My roommate in USC Journalism is coming next Monday to do a short article for the USC Daily Trojan. He will be taking pictures so bring your cool gear.
Another great ride, good to be back. Got to ride with the fast group on the way back from Encino. XPC took a long pull with Will, Bea, Richard, Wise, Sergio and me( I was hanging on for dear life). Then a couple of kids bridge the gap just as Wise decides to take a pull. Wise picks up the the tempo, a gap develops, 1 ..... 2 ...... 3 ....... feet; then boom I got caught in the wind. 10.....20......30 feet; they're gone.
Caught in nowhere land, I sat up and tried to wait for the second group . I saw a light coming towards me and thought someone in the breakaway had a mechanical, turn out to be Richard riding back to say goodbye.
I got to the foot of Cahuenga in Universal City and still did not get caught. I figured the guys will catch me by the dealerships but still no one. Passing the Mobil station and a couple hundred yards away from the crest, I thought I would make it and started to pedal faster. Resisting the temptation to look back for the past 5 miles finally took it's toll, I looked back seconds before Wolfrider1 past me.
There were 2 other lights/guys behind me. so I chased Wolfrider1 down and hopefully catch him before the crest. I got within 10 feet but no KOM points for me. I figure I pass him on the downhill but Wolfrider1 was a man on a mission, he was spinning the cranks just like a cartoon.
A quarter down the hill, I got passed by RB. That was a sight to see, all 6'7" of him barreling down the hill. I was spinning my 53/11 and he flew right by me. I just tucked in, let gravity do the work, and enjoy the descent. Someone else passed me but it did not matter anymore, the race is over.
Towards the bottom of the hill, there was a gnarly accident, two cars hit each other. We probably got there, just moments after it happened. RB says one of the cars involved past us on Cahuenga. See what happens when a car races a bike.
If you ever wonder what I think of during a Wolfpack ride, you just got a snippet. I hear voices on this ride and it is Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwin. Normally I'm lantern rouge but last night I was a contender for 8th.
nice summary SC! I didnt think we would see anybody after you guys took off. we spent another 5 or 10 mins helping paul out with his muddied clips. I'm glad a few people stayed behind cause drafting is the shit!! 35 mins from velodrom to hollywood and highland.
Last night was my 12th Wolfpack and the 4th one I finished. I was pretty much with everyone all the way to Encino but stayed back to help with the clips and that was certainly the wrong move for a slow ass like me because that was about the last time I saw anyone till I got back to Tangs but it still rocked and I still loved it.
It was nice riding with y'all. Mihai and I were the two Westsider's riding with y'all. Kieron is also sort of Westside, but recently lost his official status due to CRANK Mob shenanigans.
Mihai posted a summary here and I like SC's account too. Drafting on the unlit LA River bikepath was fucking insane.
This shit was a wake up call to stop chowing down on pizza and pop, take my fucking vitamins, and mount my steel pony more. Y'all killed it.
I love this ride! It is the perfect balance of two cycling genres. The speed and precision of a roadie ride, and the irreverence and spontaneity of an MR ride.
Thank you for taking us on one of the most fun and fast routes I have ever experienced. I wish we had that kind of pavement all over this stank ass city.
I knew you guys were going to go washington, actually I suspected Venice. About 3/4 of the way from the federal building to the beach my brake fell off at which point I weighed out the option of keeping riding or pulling over and fixing and after much consideration I pulled over and snapped that bad boy back on. Since I didn't know which direction you were going after the beach stop I thought it unwise to try to catch up and took wilshire to santa monica to melrose to highland to sunset and back to tangs. I beat you there. And I was beat, so I went home.
I'll miss it next week because I'll be in texas at SXSW, but will be back after that.
Aw man, i got dropped so fast, that's what i get for takin' up the back. I chickend out big time at that light. Better luck next time! L'il pup's is a fast ride too, but a little slower than wolfpack, come on out tomorrow :)
xpc and i had probably one of the only breakaways in wolfpack history that was never caught before reaching tangs. shit was intense!
Actually not true. Tony Z, Cole, Richard, XPC, Adam and Wise have been in several breakaways that have never been caught. The most significant was a ride back from the Velodrome where some of the guys mentioned above finished 10 minutes ahead of the first chase and almost 30 minutes from the main group.
My Dearest Darling Wolfpack,
I am too exhausted to be witty and seductive and charming to you right now, or I'd otherwise tell you I like the way you freak LA like the dancefloor it is.
You a nasty girl.
Do you like bearclaws?
wow you guys are crazy. good job! be careful though..i got hit by that car on washington and crenshaw..bad memories but i'll be back on the bike in five weeks...
if nothing else pay particular attention to :42 of the video. Mikey Walsh is next to an SUV with some chick babbling about something and Mikey's dog growls grrrarararaar back at her hahah I crack up everytime I see it
you are all artists in my book. I propose a race amongst artist who bicycle, the winner receives one month solo show at Gagosian gallery or maybe just some shit hole show in Chinatown.
no no, the winning artist of the bicycle race gets a gallery show at Shepard Ferry OBEY store and a fixed gear with yellow rims similar to Kanye West bicycle.
Blum and Poe gallery will be funding the dope test after the big wolfpack hustle race.
and yes all you art school brats, they will be testing for marijuana and adderall. all of which are banned by WADA. unless your doctor fills out your TUE paperwork. Alcohol is also on the list, so heads up.
Mr. Christmas of Ace Gallery is arguing his racers have a naturally high level of THC and Adderall, as documented on the new biological passport program.
Also, Ace Gallery argues that the riders chimeric twin have created an abnormally high level of blood alcohol ratio.
-roadblock- i'm actually 80% better. the scratches on my face are healed and just a little pink now. my elbow is the only thing i'm waiting for since there's a tiny fracture, but just 5 more weeks (maybe less). my knee is a little swollen still but the doc said i can get on the stationary bike at the gym, with no resistance, to get it moving again. i'm excited to ride again.
""Wolfpack. The Hustle Ride. / brandt-sorenson's blog" "
LOL! I have a feeling he would LOVE that. he seems to crave the attention in order to sell his clothing line. dude even made a fake Ridazz myspace profile for which he uses html trickery to make it look like I'm one of his friends in the top 8!!... presume-ably so that others would think the page is legit and join up? weirdo. with his tiny print attempt to (tm) the Ridazz name to himself and sell product LOL. newsflash to Nick, the ridazz name is already tm'd long ago to the person who came up with the name!
look at his Ridazz profile, he lies about his alleycat losses to JACK (wonder which other of his "stats" are lies) and he has multiple profiles on here for which he talks about himself and how he can out run wolfpack but then never actually shows up to our open invites. what shenannigans are next? stay tuned!
bflover:
"And when can we all buy a pair of wolfpack hustle brand skinny jeans?? "
Ha. The fixed gear guys say Wolfpack is a bunch of roadies, and the roadies say Wolfpack is a bunch of hipsters.
At any rate we can all agree B.Sorenson is a bit cuckoo. Nice guy in real life, from my experience, but I never understand his posts. Does he love or hate? Are we witnessing some kind of internal conflict playing out?
I think I've done 15 WP rides now, and I can say that it's not roadies or fixed gear guys or any other cute little box anyone wants to put it in. It's it's own thing where people from the above (and more) all fit perfectly together and it's amazing. I dream about it on off nights and I'm actually pissed when I'm not in LA on a Monday night because I know exactly what I'm missing.
The guys been complaining about not being pro for like the last ten years of riding. Dude cant even upgrade to category 1... its not that hard. In fact, last weekend at the Elite Cat 2 National Race, dude finished dead last. He'as a dirtbag, sleeps in his car at all races, never pays for a hotel.
"weirdo. with his tiny print attempt to (tm) the Ridazz name to himself and sell product LOL. newsflash to Nick, the ridazz name is already tm'd long ago to the person who came up with the name! "
Erik Tonkin from Portland Oregon came up with the Ridazz name and logo. Skull with spoke eyes, text mouth back in 99.
Who knows how that shit migrated to LA in 2003... but its definately registered TM to Tonkin in Oregon.
I am not keen to whoever this Brandt-Sorensen dude is and I've never seen him on a ride, but holy fuck. That is the most self-indulgent and self-important profile I've ever seen. Way to go, dude.
This one time I saw a brakeless fixed gear guy crash into B.Sorenson at a street race, and I was like "oh shit he's gonna be pissed." I approached him later about it, like "dude I saw that guy wreck into you" and he was totally cool about it.
Not super bad, but the kid rode his bike right into the rear wheel on Sorenson's x-thousand dollar road bike. I was like "eek!" But Sorenson was like "ha."
"And when can we all buy a pair of wolfpack hustle brand skinny jeans??"
funny you should ask blackflaglover.... wolfpack hustle Knickers designed by Ambiguous coming out for the spring season. grab a pair. you're sure to look hip.
"Aw man, i got dropped so fast, that's what i get for takin' up the back. I chickend out big time at that light. Better luck next time! L'il pup's is a fast ride too, but a little slower than wolfpack, come on out tomorrow :)"
So... you invite us.. I come out.. and you get dropped on your own ride!, WHAT'S UP WITH THAT!! Everyone was stopped and willing to wait but Andrew was anxious to take off.
markedge: i'm surprised you're making such a negative judgement on the guy based purely on his external image and whatever image it is he's trying to sell. come on!
"So... you invite us.. I come out.. and you get dropped on your own ride!, WHAT'S UP WITH THAT!! Everyone was stopped and willing to wait but Andrew was anxious to take off."
Whatever, i try to keep up the best i can and try to keep good spirits about it. It sucks enough being dropped 3 nights in a row without people talking shit on message boards about me [- way to be understanding and welcoming to new people. thanks a lot
Hey RC, I don't think XPC was trying to be mean, I think sometimes meaning is lost in words on forums. But for what its worth I totally hope you come back out. Hayden and I try to run an all inclusive ride and I think most people would agree that we aren't competitive at all. This is not a race, this is a hustle. Be sure to introduce yourself next monday. Thanks for coming out.
Hey RC what RB said, I think he was trying to be funny not mean. I get dropped all the time and no one has ever been anything but encouraging. Definitely don't give up and please come back.
RC, Sorry it came off that way, I was just making fun. In no way did I mean to discourage or offend you.
I've been dropped plenty of times myself, and plain and simple it sucks. But it's just like anything don't give up, and keep on practicing and you'll do better.
Tune in tonight at 10pm Pacific (11pm Mountain/Central) when our special guest star will be yoyotweak from New Jersey who emailed Roadblock back in January about coming out to LA and riding with the 'pack.
This was fucking fun even though i didnt even last up to 6th street. Y'all are fucking monsters and even though the weakest (me and my freind with the mountain bike) get left behind i got Alot of support. props and see y'all next friday. fucking hustlers.
Okay, I'm intrigued by the different replies from this thread.
I don't know if I ever asked, but how many do y'all start out with, how many get dropped and left to fend(then get eaten) for themselves, and how many are left standing?
i did it tonight, died once i hit ktown and couldnt see any riders so i quit. rode up vermont got some tacos then hit the cahuenga pass and made it back to noho. enjoyed it alot. good vibe. thats a response from a newb.
More than half always finish. Not unusual for the whole group to make it back. Mostly people get dropped when they sit too far back, once the pack gets moving it's gone. I'm usually there to pick up stragglers
I waited for handbone on 6th for a few minutes, he didn't show . I also had a mechanical so I went up to Orange 20. Hang out with Jim C until 12:30, watching Hitman.
For those who don’t know this race is run on a two mile section of Westchester Pkwy just north of LAX. The course is four miles of rolling terrain with two 180 degree turns. The cat 4s do six laps for 24 miles. The field was full with 100 racers. The wind was blowing very hard.
I was racing with five of my PAA teammates. We were able to keep at least three or more guys near the front for the entire race. We all were at the head of the pack at some point. I attacked into the wind on the third and fifth laps. No one really responded to these attacks. I guess because of the wind. The sprint is slightly uphill with a tail wind. I hit 42 mph. In the end I got tenth place.
I just read soooo many posts on this thread... I rode 3 times got dropped all 3 by a band of caliber individuals who for no reason at all were in support of my personal hustle .I never felt left out... I just felt slow, like i needed to work on my hustle nuff respect ... i will be back.
I did that "slow roll around the Rose Bowl" with the group and didn't expect you guys were going to sprint down the back side of the bowl. By the time I got back to the lot, Geof was the only person there. RB, Cole, and Matt waited for us up on Linda Vista (thanks guys) and we tried to catch up with the group and headed down into to Old Town instead of up to Montrose (oops). See you guys next Monday.
Nice riding with you guys again. That loop around the Rose Bowl was fun, I had never ridden over there. Note to self, do not let Marcus convince me to participate in donut eating contests before an intense ride.
rb,
too many consecutive days of drinking and smoking and riding. and on monday i had already gone downtown to glendale and back (with scenic detours through hollywood and los feliz), and then downtown to highland park and back (these arent huge miles but im just pooped) and i was high all day dear god i need a real job. i was instantly tired as soon as the pace picked up, my legs said no.
Cat 4/5
I started out strong and won the prime/bonus (3 points). It was pretty much uneventful until the 9th lap where I got caught on the tail end of the only crash of the race. Around 15 people were seriously involved. I came to screeching halt and my finger and drops were hit by the carnage. For the next two laps I was behind the group by 100 ft pushing to regroup, I used all my energy to catch up over two laps. Then the final lap came and I had no power for the sprint, and finished 35th.
Last week was pretty funny when Yong rolled up and started pulling Hayden up the hill on colorad, then Cole grabbed Hayden's belt, then I grabbed coles fanny pack, then adam grabbed my belt hahahah wait was that Adam? where has adam been??? who grabbed my belt?
oh hells yeah. along with hitting the rosebowl, gettiing dropped, rolling arroyo, and taking that sweet picture, that was my favorite part of last monday. ya'll were hanging off that car four strong, and i was right behind, laughing my ass off.
so sad...gonna have to miss t'nite. working for social justice down in conservative san diego. woot. cole--i just hope you didn't do that cloud burst ride yesterday. i'm dying to do it next weekend. think i'll drop the SDSR if i can get my money back, as i am reg. to the wrong cat and don't want to fuck about trying to get them to upgrade me. also i found out this weekend that cyclo-x is the best of all time. like road biking and mtn biking at the same time. in the drops on a single track eating shit in the bushes. chalk up another good sat. in the mtns thanks to lizard and king richard. solidarity.
B had another great weekend of racing. Del Mar(Saturday) was a crit in the racetrack/fair ground parking lot. The course was oval shape with a tailwind on the start/finish leg. The Women's Pro 1/2/3 was a fairly large field with over 20 racers. The race was pretty uneventful. B found herself working a lot whether bridging a gap or pulling, not having teammates is hard work. There were a few attacks for primes but nothing really stayed away.
It came down to a field sprint. On the final turn, the sprinters position themselves for the sprint by moving up the pack. The sprinters take off and B finds herself behind slower riders in 15th or so. She moves to the extreme left of the course, riding so close to the barricades she can almost touch them. With the finish line in sight she takes off and finishes a very respectable 4th.
Sunday’s race was in Ontario. The course was a mile loop with 7 turns and it was windy. There about 20 racers in the women’s field. No team had more than 3 riders, B rode alone. The first part of the race was uneventful, a few attacks but nothing significant. Then, by chance, B and 2 other racers found themselves about 30 feet from the pack. One racer takes a hard pull then B takes a hard pull then the third racer takes a pull as a fourth bridged the gap. The four racers stayed away for the rest of the race increasing their lead a few seconds each lap. On the final turn, which was over 100 yds from the finish, the girls started sprinting. It was a long sprint, B came in third.
I wasn’t there for the race two weeks ago but this is what I heard. B got in a breakaway with two very strong girls, a former pro and an Olympian. They got away towards the middle of about an hour race. They stayed away for the rest of the race but B got dropped and caught by the peloton on the home stretch, she finished 7th.
While it seemed to be a disappointing lost. B gained insight on her responsibilities in a breakaway. Every race is a learning experience and as showed in this example experience is an advantage.
Fuck... I have to give props to the Wolf Pack. All night I was chasin you guys and chasin you guys and chasin you guys.
I had a great ride though. For the past four years I have been riding on a constant basis, I have never kept that type of pace for that period of time. I am sure you guys will whip me up to pace in future rides. Hopefully I will be able to attend more often.
Fuuuuuck. Can't believe a couple guys got tickets from the smpd (who else). Well actually I believe it after all we ran the light right in front of them.....
THAT FIRE WAS CRAZY!!!! I tried to drive past it to get a look at the carnage, but a double bus got stuck in the middle of the street. Tring to do a U-turn, or perhaps block traffic.
A lot of new faces last night; few finished, others will try again. Don't be discouraged, it takes a few tries to finish. Last night ride was flat at a decent pace; most nights won't be. Just keep on coming out, there no better training than the ride itself.
i'm adding to the wolfpack hypergraphia by saying that last night was my first + most challenging + funnest ride so far; i was so wired after getting home I couldn't go to bed for a bit. since we rode through familiar areas, being dropped ALL THE TIME isn't as bad as it sounds. dying a few times also isn't as bad as it sounds.
thanks beatrice + dennis + don + cole + everyone else.
I'VE STILL GOT A PAIR OF LEGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm going to be in Berlin next week, and NYC the following week, and SF the week after that. Shit. 3 weeks in a row with no wolfpack lovin. what will I do???!
FYI....in case it hasn't already been mentioned....the latest issue of Bicycling magazine has a quarter page blurb about Wolfpack Hustle ride. If you start getting a bunch of newbies, that might be part of the reason.
All ridazz are welcomed. Just be warned that it is a relatively fast ride. There regroups but they are short ( approx. 10 mins) few(3-4), and far between (approx every 10 miles). And lastly, the group does all it can to wait for people but some will be dropped.
you're not talking to a newbie buddy. im familiar with the routine. but i guess now other "newbies" that read this will have this elaborate warning of the trechorous horror.
Like I've said ' All Ridazz are welcome". I not trying to discourage anybody from coming. I'm surprise that you and Roadblock would even think that. You guys should know me by now and I'm as much an advocate for cycling as you guys are. I might not have started a forum or work at the Kitchen but I do what I can. If you guys don't think so, then you guys can fuck off.
sc-nomad....you're the coach. I knew that even before I knew you have that nickname. You fully helped me with my riding and helped to make the Dark Century what it is by helping me so much on the first one. I understand your above posts and have no problem with them. Also, thanks for believing in me and asking me to join the juniors bud's ride. I should have taken your advice and taken you up on the offer. I think I'm going to jump on next season's ride.
getting dropped isnt really that bad yo. im headin out next week, my goal's to make it further than last time. great training and everyones supportive. you feel great after as well. just follow the blinkies ! wolfpack got me riding my bike again and made me get some sexy calves.
Not GOpez nor I will F' OFF. We'll just slingshot around you and give you a good pull. we have the bikeside to our advantage. may the force be with you.
Easy there coach you know I was just pullin ya chain on that comment. You always joking about being DFL and all! We missed you loco. Its never the same without you bud.
I'm not really upset at anyone and might have sent the wrong message. I just don't want people showing up and being disappointed. It is a fast ride and you might get dropped. Also being a newbie does not mean slow. There are newbies that show up and kick ass.
No one sees the struggles of the ones, that come unprepared, as much as me. I ride with them week after week. I do everything to help them catch up, I show them how to work together. I'll lead them through shortcuts to the next stop, if there is one. I do all I can for them to have the same experience as the faster ridazz, some nights it becomes a ride within the ride.
To make it clearer here are some things to consider to gauge if you’re prepared.
1. Can you maintain 15 -18 mph solo for around 10 miles? The pack goes faster but working in pack will probably be the same effort.
2. Is your bike ready? Is your bike mechanically sound that you can ride for 30 miles without breaking down? Flats are an exception.
3. Are you geared correctly (for fixies/single speed)? Spinning at a comfortable cadence can you maintain 18 - 22 mph?
4. Do you have a plan B? If case you get dropped, do you have someone's phone number that can tell you where's the next stop or how to get back? If you come to the ride for the first time, most regulars will gladly give you their cell numbers, in case you get lost.
As you can see, none of my guidelines is difficult. All it takes is an average level of fitness to keep up.
" @0gravity:are newbies a bad thing in your eyes? Is WolfPack an exclusive group? If they can ride and hustle... let them be (newbies). See y'all again in June. "
Sorry I wasn't clear. I wasn't making a judgment either way about newbies. I guess that's a derogatory term so I can see why you assumed they were bad in my eyes. They're not. I've yet to do a WP ride partly because I'm on the west side. So I'd be a newbie if I ever show up anyway. Bottom line, the more riders the better, IMHO.
Not a bad list coach.... one thing I would add.... buy some flat resistant tires like armadillos or the like. A lot of streets are filled with potholes and crap.
was cool to meet some new faces last night including a guy named Pete a fixed gear rider from tampa who had no problem keeping up and even threw down some tricks at the stops. Dopeness
i've only done wp once. it's heated but there were plenty of stops to allow for catch ups... a very considerate group. wednesday ktown forge and gorge runs at a similar pace but is a bit shorter and starts a earlier. if anyone feels overly intimidated with a wp run, see how you perform on wednesday first. or just go for it. best pack run in town.
AGITATOR. I like that. Thanks for clearing that up. I may have sounded like the newbie because i was advocating for friends whom i know are capable but still won't try the ride because they are intimidated. Maybe i'll call them out in here because it's about time they try this ride. So these fools i speak of can do this based on the stats posted by XPC last night. i've riden at those speeds (actuall moving time) with these guys because my computer tells me so. Anyway XPC's GPS is far more accurate though. either way i know these people can do it but they are intimidated and i think even more so when they read the thread. You guys are overly excited and i understand this excitement... i have done 7 of these. In my over a half dozen rides i have enjoyed the adrenaline and the thrill of our own little peloton and or paceline zipping through our magnificent city. 40 miles in one night at avg. speeds of 18-22 is an amazing rush that lasts the whole work week. Anyway the see all the talk and they think it's super elite pro-cyclist work to be out there. I don't want to say any names but it think it's time ZUKO tried one. RB, tell him to try one already. tell him he can hang. Sorry Zuko!
No offense taken and you're cool NOMAD. I meet your guidelines buddy above and beyond. I'll see you fast mothaphucka's back in june. Im gonna admit it. i may need lots a back wheel the first night back. Ride Hard. ARRRROOOOOOOOOOOO!
next monday you should roll through normandie and we'll photograph and video tape you as you bomb down hill from (clinton) on through beverly and straight through to third street. whattaya think. i can get a pro lense camera out here and a video camera in a week and we can shoot from my rooftop. RB, you saw my apt. bldg. whattaya think. if not next week some forthcoming week. just a thought.
if you can do this... you can do wolf pack hustle.

The Fiero lives! richietotheie, I had no idea that was you. I noticed the bike racks but I didn't see the KITT car light up front. Come back and ride with the pack for old times' sake.
Hey Darth Veloz....how come you (in one of your other screen names) don't want to wait to ride with Wolf Pack until June, but you will ride on the upcoming Badger Song right away? Who says the Badger Song won't be a bit fast for you (with your ankle injury)? Well...there is a good chance that you will be fine.
But how about this. You. Me. Your House to San Diego?
How about that, foo? ;) In fact, this is a good time to ask other riders out for this ride. I have a good route to SD....different from LA to SD--but It starts near the Santa Fe Dam. It's about 150 miles, and we ALWAYS have cool peeps from SD to put us up.
So what do you think, tough guy? Should we make this a race (no) or should we get some heads to ride down?
The start point is accessible from the metrolink....about 5 miles.
I broke my ankle... it's been in cast since late feb and got the whole month of april to go on a removable brace. I won't be ready to ride aggressively possibly until JUNE. I won't be back to ass kicking, back wheel riding, slingshotting around your left speed until late MAY to early JUNE. so look out for me in JUNE. I'll be on your back wheel and on your left as i am passing you...
Man, I didn't know you were so badly hurt. I get it now. It seems like everyone is taking some hard injuries...especially in the last year or so. I'm starting to worry more about having insurance. Just off of the top of my head
tbone
marcus
nicole
the portland fiasco
and bunches of more people are getting some serious injuries....
It seems like eveyone should have a paypal account for their bills.
sucks...
Hope you get well faster than expected.
yeah, i'll be back as soon as i can make the ankle rotate many revolution per minute.
So who's this DARTH VELOZ character? I ride with that fool all the time, he's a strong rider and he's taught me the ways of the bikeside. What foil tern?
Sweet, glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the feedback. The ride is just right, fast enough to challenge most people but does not leave you exhausted. Toughest thing is trying to sleep after the ride.
If you pick the right wheel you don't even have to pay attention to traffic too much . Some of these guys have been riding together for a while and are very aware of their responsibilities to the ridazz behind them.
rope them when you're fresh, you will get tired trying to hang onto that wheel, then when you get dropped you'll be much closer to the re-group... that was my plan for my first ride and i am glad i did it that way
Way to interview Don!!!! You fucking rocked it ;)
Adam sorry dude, I didn't mean to lose you at the 7-11 I thought you pasted me so I tried to chase you down but no luck...
Yo Chris,
Sorry I lost you after the 7-11.
Guess that's kind of the nature of the ride.
A swirl of madness.
I left the fountain with a beer in my hand.
Very nearly rolled right into that sobriety checkpoint with all the cops on San Fernando Blvd... but managed do toss my half-full beer :( into the bushes about 20 yards shy of the piggly wigglers.
Do'h.
Good seeing all y'all
See you at the Hustle.
what size is your tire? I have an extra 700 in oretty good condition that will last you the ride if you want it. I will show up 15 mins early and you can put it on if ya want let me know.
sorry Roadblock I worked from 5pm to 9pm ... couldnt respond in time!
Have fun!!.. or I hope you had fun !!!
I will be there next monday in tip-top shape... !!! NEVER WILL THIS HAPPEN AGAIN... i cant believe I am missing this... i had too good a time last week
Oooh Weee! That's the second week in a row that I've been dropped, and I mean dropped bad, fast and hard.
I was thinking that it's the malfunctioning of my mechanism because of my medical issues, but now I'm afraid it's just old age catching up with me.
Any Wolfpacker out there over forty, give me some words of encouragement, I'm desperate.
I'm afraid to show up next week.
TROY! I got dropped like amother fucker last night too. there are a few guys who ride with us who are 40+ you arent alone. I wont name names cause you all look young as hell for your ages but know there are some older cats rockin it every monday. give it another shot.
Second time out, Second time dropped. I could not get the last part of the directions on the last leg, so I just took Hollywood back to Tangs.
You guys are monsters up those hillzzz.
Does anyone know if herb helps or hinders on fast rides. I know any amount of alcohol kills me for fast riding, (meaning fast by my not so fast riding) what about herb?
Troy, I don't know what going on, accept you probably ain't been riding enough. Your age has nothing to do with it. I'm under 40 and get dropped like a hot potato, it has nothing to do with the age, I'm just an out of shape fatt fkr
You see those crusty LA wheelman collecting Social Security checks, them guys go fast.
You can disregard everything I said, I just want to hollar at you TROY
My man, whats up! Good to see you on this board, and good for you that you are riding that bike. Keep going back. You'll get back in and you will be leading the pack again. Just come out to all the rides, if for any reason, I like crossing paths with you.
Does anyone know if herb helps or hinders on fast rides. I know any amount of alcohol kills me for fast riding, (meaning fast by my not so fast riding) what about herb?

i would keep the alcohol intake maybe a little less on this ride and keep the herb for the finish line. or maybe for the last checkpoint ? get some sativa ? but yeah i doubt it will enhance your performance.
^ does wph.com ever spotlight "roadies" it seems to me it's pretty bias and never spotlights "ROADBIKE RIDAZZ". if im wrong please reference roadie spotlights.
Roadblock,
you ride road. what's your 2 cents on this?
soso it kind of felt like you guys were predators being that you hunted us down at our first stop... good to see you guys jump on board and ride with us. make sure you represent at the drag races this saturday!!
Patrick and I missed the conversation so when the cops stopped further down the road with back-up, we figured 'We're fucked". But it was something else and the cops were actually cordial as we rode by.
RB
sorry about the contrast....you guys hauling ass and my weak ass passing by Tang's on my v8 SUV jsut contaminating...
Sometimes I just have to keep it L.A. like that.>>cant get into the green frame of mind but I guess feeling guilty is a start.
Saw a solo rider pull into Tacos Mexico parking, seemed like he had a work out.Thought he was behind till I saw the rest of the pack swing by after him.
dee, i too am guilty of lots of driving lately. i just got my car back and i've been resorting to it because of my ankle. when it is too far to bike too or walk to i drive. i still can't quite walk without swelling but i can ride a hell of a lot better and that produces no swelling, infact it reduces it. but now my bike's cassette and chain gave out. im performing the transplant surgery on black tonight and regreasing the headset. he's gonna be a happy and fast stallion after tonight. maybe new cables and brake bads are in order too. HE's rearing with excitement... excuse for a sec. DOWN BOY,,, eassy now. GOOD HORSE.
la chotta almost took the dingo in.thank god roadblock was able to sweet talk the officer into thinking we were just innocent little boys trying to get a workout in.i was sweating it for sure
@ ROADBLOCK
Sorry I flaked on ya!!! I had a domestic situation which could have been taken care of earlier but I also had SMPD over my apt on monday evening reference my altercation at the bikerowave. :(
After a cubcamp ride this guy was hassling one of the riders and I asked him to leave,(not with the group) he was high on something but eventually left. When we all came outside he clobbered me from behind with a large brandy bottle and put a huge gash in the back of my head. 12 staples and 3 souchers (SP) later at St John's An interesting initiation to cubcamp!!
I had to id him from photos along with all the other witnesses, Richie, Alex etc. It looked like it could have been uglier, but thanks to Spook, Richie, Slidmarcus, Alex etc. who took care of me till the police and fire dept showed.
I think he's going to gt assault with deadly weapon
again sorry for flaking but between that and my daughters I couldn't make it, both were surprises, but I'll be there ..................even if I don't complete !!! :)))
Race Report: Bakersfield State Road Race Championships
62 miles. 31-mile course. Two laps. 1800’ of climbing per lap.
Saturday I raced 30+ masters cat 1-4. There were about thirty-five guys in this category. I ended up in a six-man group chasing a six-man breakaway made up entirely of cat 1 riders. I took 9th place.
Sunday I raced Cat 4. The field was about one hundred strong. I finished in 21st place.
124 miles later I am a little tired. Don’t worry I’ll be out to ride Monday night.
RACE REPORT:
Haven't reported on B lately so here what's been happening the past few weeks.
As many of you know B crashed pretty badly 3 weeks ago. While no bones were broken, she's had pretty bad road rash. B got on a bike as soon a she could, she feeling better now and is getting stronger by the week.
Her first race was 2 weeks after her crash, she raced in San Diego's Barrio Logan Crit. The day started at 5am on Saturday with a drive to San Diego. B raced the Women's Pro 1/2 and took 5th. We immediately took off after she got her prize and headed back north for the WP Drag Race 3.
As soon as we got to town we loaded the scooters onto the truck and gathered all the things we needed for the Drag Race. We got to the drag race a helped run it. We left B's bikes at home so she wouldn't be tempted to race since she was still healing. But did not work out so well as B could not resist racing, she got a run in and qualified. A clerical oversight prevented her from racing which turned out to be a blessing. After being up for 24 hrs and 2 races later we headed home. (That was a great way to spend my birthday).
5 hours after getting home, B was on her way back to San Diego for a 65 mile road race. With less than 5 hours of sleep and very little food, B finished a very respectable 7th in the Women's Pro race. She would had done a lot better if she had more rest and drank more, her legs cramped at the sprint.
Today she raced the State Road Race championship for Women's Elite. It was a 62 mile course with 1800 feet of climbing. Drawing from the lessons learned from the last race B ate early and often. It was a very strong field of over 35 women. It came down to a bunch sprint, 6 - 8 wide the girls started for the finish. One girl just shoot a head of the pack, then B counters. B gets closer and closer but the finish line comes too soon. B gets second by less than a bike length. B missed getting the State Jersey but earned points making her a couple points short of upgrading to a Cat1.
I wish I had known she would be here..(SD) I would have been there to support. Maybe we need a where is Bea now thead. Hell maybe a site.
Hope your total recovery is swift as you are.
I TOTALLY!! going to try and come out to night, I've been out of town working, I'm in San Diego right now and I plan to drive up tonight, I may show up a little late.. 10:30.
909 717 8276, If I miss the start, plz text me the stop.
Richie was also at last weekend's races. He raced with the Pro men. I spoke to him right before the race on Sunday and he looked strong. A flat shortened his race but I think he finished strong in the Master's race the day before.
It's amazing how many people from the Wolfpack race and do really well. I was surprised how many Elite racers have heard of the Wolfpack Hustle.
It’s quite an accomplishment really. RB and I attended B's first road race February 2007 hoping to start a Wolfpack team. It was not the best initiation to road racing; the conditions that day were just awful. It was raining and we had an early start time. Just when you think things couldn't get any worse, B missed her start.
B started her race over a lap behind. The race had broken into a breakaway of about 4 racers and the field behind them. B caught the field within her first lap. She sat in the field for a while waiting for anyone to bridge the gap. No one did so she bridge it herself taking one other rider with her. It took a couple of laps but she was able to bridge the gap and losing the other rider in the process.
Once she got close to the breakaway, she kept a distance of a few bike lengths behind the breakaway. She matched their speed throughout the race. At times she found herself riding with the breakaway. In the breakaway, she was confronted by a couple of women in the group. She assured them that she was not a threat since she was a lapped rider and will not sprint, but that did not stop the cattiness. B fell back a little and just rode her own race. She finished dead last that day. Her second race a few weeks later was a disappointment.
Though initially discouraged, B started training a little more. She also joined a local team, SCVelo, to learn how to race road. One of the first things the team wanted to change was her bike, she was racing on a heavy cyclocross bike with road wheels. Her team manager lent her a frame and some wheels. B pieced the bike together with spare, borrowed and some donated parts.
B started racing again in June of 2007. With SCVelo's support and a Wolfpack attitude, B started winning races. She moved quickly to a Cat 3 and found herself short 7 of 25 points needed to upgrade to a Cat 2 by the end of the 2007 racing season.
At the start of the 2008 season,(mid January) B chased those 7 points as soon as she could but a change in ruling found her short 15 points or 3-4 first place finishes ( considering the average field size). Through a lot of hard work and kind consideration from a USCF official, who expedited B's request for upgrade, B was able to race as a Cat 2 by mid February. Three months after, B accrued 30 points to upgrade to a Cat 1.
Under the tutorship of Dominic and Betsy Galenti, B has learned a lot about the strategies and tactics of racing but the Wolfpack edge is ever present.
OK, Hustlers, I'm taking the train home just so I can save my legs for tonight. And I'm going to get my actual road bike out of mothballs to compensate for the lead weight that is my belly. And then I'll probably have an almost immediate mechanical problem and wind up eating donuts at Tang's instead. But one way or another. I'm comin' to wolfpack tonight, dammit. So everybody else should probably set their brake pads to rub their rims a little - or something.
I will admit: I was not ready for that. Cahuenga was brutal. I am weak. But I made it, despite having a wicked cramp since before even the first stop. Thanks everyone! (And sorry to the guy I cut off at the gate in the park.)
Mercifully, I already have plans next Monday, but maybe see you in two weeks (after a little more training!).
I got a job and gotta be up by 5am every day. The last time I went out, I only slept for 2.5 hours and worked for 9 and was beat. Im going to save some dough to buy a nice road bike and make it out whenever I can.
How difficult tonight as far as climbing? im good on the flats now, im dying on the climbs. ankle still a tad bit weak. please do tell. im eager to join the pack once again.
I can't imagine that your older, more successful cousin would ever ever ask a question like that.... "Emperor, is Hoth too cold for us to invade tonight should we wait till the weather is sunny?"
i will be back again, with shoes i can get out of the cages, and hopefully with a little more hustle . I had a blast last week(what an ass kicking). and so the saga continues . thanx
Haven’t missed one week since New Years Day of 2007.
I’m amazed that I made it to this milestone and want to thank my fellow ‘pack members—especially Wolfrider1 and Roadblock—for transforming my riding and making me the much better cyclist that I am today.
Woot! I'll be there tonight too, as I'm in town on a Monday at last. Can't wait to get left in the dust by all the folks just back from ALC who are certainly in the best shape of their life or something.
Thanks to all for the warm wishes and props. Last night was F-U-N. I’m stoked that everyone dug the route, even though it was a bit of a thigh-burner. And how awesome was it to see Jack and Megan bombing it on that tandem? Twice as awesome!
Yes, very good ride.
Hope this one becomes a regular route.
I'll take a little credit for leading us over the Sepulveda pass the first time... back in the rainy winter months of this year.
But you perfected the loop by adding the Griffith Park pass.
Nice job Richard.
Pretty soon we'll celebrate your 100th!
Hey Coach, I have a friend that I would like you to meet. He's way faster than me, and he has placed in the top ten Cat 5, on his first two races. We were talking...and he is a ridaa, too. He's been on wolfpack and finished with the group.....but he wants to race. He did his first century with me...and on the second time out, he was off of the front the whole time. Not that this info means anything.....I just think he should ride with you guys in San Dimas. He has huge potential.
What happened last night? Mikey Wally's post on twitter makes it sound like it was a weird one. I got a flat right out of the gate and didn't have a spare tube, but also had a super early meeting this morning so I took that as a sign I should call it a night early. What did I miss??
I would have to say that Johnel is the first rider I've seen on wolfpack who could actually have gone faster save for the wind drag caused by oversized lats....
Last night I was taking the Amtrak to SD and I hung out with these two ridaz from Portland. They were meeting friends in SD for some crazy backpacking trip. They new MR and were really in to Wolfpack. I guess they new the 2nd street tunnel from photos and were all excited to see it like tourists at the Chinese theater.
every now and then, something tells me to look at this thread. Drew's above post made me glad I did. That is hilarious and wonderful at the same time. You guise got a rep.
Sorry to hear you are/where sick Cole. I wish you the best.
In order to be triumphant on my return i will need lots o back wheel fellas. can i be a wind chaser on my return? will y'all gimme some love in the form of back wheel? I'll gladly pull you all down the descents (lol).
Last 10 miles I really felt my knee give out, couldn't put any pressure on it. Couldn't get out of the saddle to pedal, nothing. So I'm giving it a rest today, hopefully it heals up fast.
THE SKY, THE WINDS OF THE WEST, THE WESTERN MOON AND THE WOLF ANIMAL SPIRIT ARE CALLING ME... I'M BACK ON THE PROWL. I ROLL WITH THE PACK ONCE AGAIN...
SOON I WILL HAVE NEW SON OR DAUGHTER OF WOLF IN THE KLAN. A MALE OR A LIL BITCH TO BREAK INTO THE PACK MENTALITY, THE SEX OF THIS SOUL..., IT IS STILL UNKNOWN. I WILL BE A GREAT WOLF UNKLE TO ANOTHER SON OR DAUGHTER OF THE KLAN. THE SON OF WOLF KLAN. DATING BACK TO THE FORRESTS OF THE MOTHER LAND... THIS LONE WOLF WILL RIDE TRIUMPHANTLY AGAIN... NOW I'VE GOT A WOLF NIECE AND/OR NEPHEW TO LIVE UP TO. AROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Eddie "GOpez" López
[LOPE 2 LATIN=LUPUS]
[LOPEZ 2 SPANISH/FROM LATIN= "SON OF WOLF"]
that was Shawn from Ireland. Here for the summer.... we lowered his handlebars and inflated his tries. Hope to see him next monday. on another note... Where has Johnel dissappeared to? I was getting used to the Wolfpack chants and whut not.
while she wolf was out gobbling up pros like a 20 piece chiken nuggets, i was repping wolfpack in the PRC. i tried to shoot as many of the weird bikes as i could (bikes with chikens, bikes with kabob grills, chinese mail bikes), but i can't figgure out how to post a gallery. so i will throw up a flickr gallery and post the link if anyone is interested. i'm also thinking of printing up a couple of them, so if anyone has any ideas about where they could hang, please let me know (the oven?, the wave?). see y'all on thurs at the races or sat at mtnerzz or mon at the ride. i missed you.
Great ride, and Meghan was excited to try her first Wolfpack ride, and hung on longer then she had anticipated.
About the kid who went down, I hope he is alright, and I think he has a legit case to sue the city. That was straight up faulty traffic engineering, they literally made a giant mound of asphalt right in the left side of the bike lane. I saw that thing in the day this weekend, and it's brand new, and high enough to be a lopsided launch ramp. Someone made a little asphalt mountain in the bike lane where no heavy vehicles are present to flatten it, and thought that was good enough. As long as the city thinks it is immune, it will continue to do shoddy repair work, that can make life even more dangerous then the worn road was in the first place. There needs to be accountability for this kind of shit.
the law of averages caught up with us last night.... flats, a bum tire, and two ride ending crashes. good description of that asphalt hazzard Gary. I'd like to see the city hel liable for that mess. half of it was a pothole the other half was a mound. what the fuck is wrong with street maintinance. bunch of retards at the helm. Sunset is filled with bullshit like that.
Is this mound / hole on sunset? I hit some new crazy bump on the eastbound side the other night and I think I flew a little!! It might have been fun if I were ready for it, but I was totally scared I was going to eat it! Hope whoever fell is OK and riding soon!
yes. the bump is just west of Parkman/Silverlake blvd. on Sunset. The guy broke his finger. I wish I had his contact info because I have a lawyer contact to pass to him from Meghan.
yo wolfpack:
hows this for a "clear sign from the universe?"
-
I headed over to the start on my still tweaked/mashed ankle
and knew I had no business riding fast.. just going to say hi
-
Then as I hung out.. I wanteded to roll w/ the pack for the first leg
even though I knew it probably was a bad idea
-
the pack started to roll.. and I grabbed my bike..
and my back tire was totally flat!
----->> d'oh
got to hang out and patch my tube and see Denis who showed up right after everyone rolled out.. hope you caught everyone. I also pointed another rider to the first stop.. hope you caught up too. good seeing everyone, and I'll see you next week.
delicious first ride. I was a little upset that i left the house and forgot to bring my gloves and my helmet but luckily i didnt really end up needing either.
Sorry for my shitty biking ethics and inability to hold a line, im definitely working on it though!
Man.... fucking glad to be back on my specialized. Tons faster than that big ole cannondale 69cm.
Great to see vspangle hustle that shit proper.
Johnell was superstoked to have earned his spoke card!
Adam. You rule. I wish I still smoked pot. And what the heck happened to the jesse and chet bearclaw. I know its not possible for them to get dropped....
This is the one fucking event that I absolutely look forward to every week. Its literally what keeps me in LA, on bikes.
I miss Beatriz. I know she has been absolutely rocking the cycling world going cat 1 pro and winning races like a mad she wolf that she is.
Wolfpack is getting back at 1AM, being awake from the adrenalin rush at 2AM shower and trying to get to sleep even though the adrenalin is still going strong!!
For the first time ever, we actualy knew our way back, so we cruised down to the end of the pier to see if we could find any babes (we didn't, but we tried) and used the bathroom. We'll see you in a few Monday's. Keep it real.
Man ive been coming on this ride for the past two weeks and this ride is everything the hype has made it. Super fast but super fun. So glad JT told me to come for a few. Def plan on making this my every Monday night for a long time to come. This is Nate btw.
A great ride last week but i have to say this...I'f you're not willing to call AND point out oncoming traffic, please stay the hell off the front. I speak to the near Multi-Casualty Incident on Ohio in S.M. And if you continue to fail to do this even after that incident, please stay the hell home
who ever rides in the front should keep in mind that you are being trusted by the entire pack to keep your eyes and mouth open. we were just getting way too fast for the particular blind intersections on ohio. if it's blind and you cant see, you must slow and be ready to stop AND be vocal about it.
"there's nothing wrong with stopping for red lights."
definitely.... I'm not trying to get all down on people cause we all make mistakes.... there is a constant tug of war between respecting the reds and blowing through and we were on the wrong side of that threshold for a minute back there. if it aint clear for the entire pack we gotta stop! sorry if that rains on your parade. maybe we can make the lights more fun by holding impromptu track stand competitions! hyuk hyuk
Yes, sorry to make it sound like it was a total free-for-all. 99% of the ride went well. But that 1% communication breakdown sticks out like a giant, possibly-fatal sore thumb in my memory.
I agree with RB ... normally the first couple guys in front have some distance on the pack and when they call it everyone has time to react...
We were rolling too fast to see around the blind intersection AND everyone was right up on wheels of the people infront! I trusted the people in front to call. They did. Just we as a pack didn't give them a safe distance to relay the message.
ANSWER - SLOW DOWN ENOUGH TO KNOW YOU AS AN INDIVIDUAL WON'T GET HIT ... THEN CALL ASAP
If people blow by your going at the red and you know they are going to fast to safely see and call "clear" or "car" follow them at a safe distance. Don't follow them unsafely then yell at them for not calling it fast enough... YOU TOOK THAT RISK WITH THEM.
I knew those intersections were sketch and I was no where near those cars that came close. Ya it took at lot out of me re-accelerating after you speed demons. But I'd rather push harder and get more training out of it then get hit or lose my nerves with a close call.
because we are drafting, the ones in the front have to be the captains and recognize the intersection as blind, all blind intersection REQUIRE a slow down. call it and slow everything up. I heard people saying that they called it, but yet everyone up front went straight through so it's confusing for the people behind as to trust the call or believe that the people in front are going by the golden rule of wph which is if it isnt clear for the entire pack then stop.
while true that we are individually responsible for ourselves. it's hard to act as individuals without considering the people behind you. we've seen crashes where one person decides to stop and the person right behind cant react in time and crashes into the person stopping. fixed gear riders have an even harder time stopping.
we just need to get more proactive and VOCAL with hand signals about the pack as a whole and always be on alert heading towards any intersection whether green or red.
I think one of the reasons we all love Wolfpack so much is the rush. But sometimes the thrill is not so thrilling. We as the riders of Wolfpack must accept that what we do can at times be very dangerous. Perhaps those who are not willing to understand this should reconsider if this is the best ride for them.
I do feel that the attitude of the pack toward reds has changed. At one time we ran reds when we could. Now it seems that we run reds at all costs. From my perspective as one of the riders who is more often than not in the first five on the road; I have seen the pack stop respecting the judgment calls made by the lead riders. There was a time when if I was on the front and stopped at an intersection the pack would stop. This is not the case any more. Now what I see most of the time if I stop is twenty bikes rushing past me into an unsafe intersection. Swarming cars that hardly have time to stop. Let us all try to remember that this is not a race it is a hustle.
Wolfpack has a National Champion. She_Wolf wins the U23 Crit National Championship in Anaheim today. She also podium in yesterday's Time Trial Race in Irvine, she placed 5th.
As for the whole running every red light thing... I don't say shit, because it's not my ride and I'm only a visitor. But I can remember a few times that the guys at the front would yell "car left!" and start to slow down, but everyone else would ignore them and act shocked to shit when they almost got hit.
Here's my take: if a cyclist gets killed while running a red, I don't really care, it's one of the dangers we assume when we make that judgment call. But, eventualy, someone is going to swerve to avoid us and end up in an accident with another vehicle, and someone who was completely innocent is going to end up hurt/killed because of us.
There are plenty of lights the pack can run with relative safety, but there are also a lot that are completely blind, and no ammount of calling "car left" at 25-30mph is going to help. The pack just needs to come to terms with the fact that they may have to actualy slow down a bit at certain intersections. I know that idea may suck, but if we cause a major accident, injury or death due to our negligence, you can kiss the Wolfpack ride goodbye, and look forward to a shit-ton of lawsuits and possible jail time. The actions of a few idiots on bikes can easily make life much more difficult for all cyclists. The motorist-cyclist relationship is a two way street. We can't expect motorists to accept us or respect us if we treat them like shit.
Slowing down at some of the dangerous inersections only adds a few minutes to the ride. The Montrose ride covers over 50 miles in just over two hours with almost no close calls.
Just my opinion. The Wolfpack ride is always fun and we always have a damn good time. I'm not talking shit at all, just giving my opinion as an outsider. See you bastards next week.
one thing I've been doing lately is to try and think ahead and TIME the light. I know the fixed gear riders have a painful time stopping and going so it could be a lot easier to just slow up well before the stale red and time it so we hit the green...
that sort of planning might lead to higher average speeds every night... and with less dead stop to full speed accelerations at sketch reds we might save a lot of energy to keep pace higher... riiiiight?
I think so. All it would really take is slowing the group down enough at some lights to make the proper judgment call. There is just no way to make a good call at 30mph in a blind intersection.
a blind red, as oppposed to reds at large intersections where you can conceivably see a few seconds farher down the road, esp. from the inner lane/middle of the street.
intuition is something im more aware of lately. i ignored mine
today.i didnt listen to it like i haven't in the past. but the amazing thing is that this time it was a strong one i ignored it and suffered the concequences. thank god im okay. we'll see in the morning but i think i'll be fine.
i have been doing wolfpack again for some weeks now and was going on my 4th in a 5week period coz i missed one 2mondays ago (so my 14th or 15th ride total since the start of WPH)... I had a feeling, a bad feeling about riding tonight just b4 leaving and i had it again just after one block of riding into this journey to the meeting point, just one block from my house and 30 seconds later (4 blocks away from home on council and alexandria... i get hit by a car making an improvised right turn way over on the left. i decided to pass her on the right (something i never do because i can always turn left with the car if it it just so happens they are turning left...that way i can slow down into a left turn and be more successfull at slowing and turning with them but i thought she was going to turn left (on the right you don't really see it coming til it's too late) and she fucking hit me dead center on the left side n and left crank section and thew me to the ground and i skidded 5 feet into the intersection and infront of the car into a tumble to a stop. i scraped myself a bit and feel a bit sore but did not hit my head just my chin with the bike or the ground and have bump on my chin and some scraps and bruises with a lil backpain. . im a lil banged up and the worst thing is that i bent my handlebars and deraileur hanger and losened my rear wheel hub and my headset with the impact. other than that the bike is okay. and im okay and im going to be okay. i took her dl number, plates, vin number and her insurance info. im gonna go get checked out tomorrow and call her insurance. fucking drivers need to fucking signal always. we are trying to read them and and be aprehensive of their fucking unpredictable moves all the fucking time but for fucking sakes please fucking signal even if it's last minute and or improvised.... godammnit!!!! be careful, oh and i was not wearing a helmet but was lucky to have cushioned the fall the right way and only bumped my chin with my bike arm, knee or frame, not sure but it was not the ground, my head was spared of impact and am lucky but please let's all wear helmets as much as possible. i learned my lesson tonight. thank got im okay. watch for cars that are dead center in the middle of an intersection undecided about a turn. their easy to spot if you are being apprehensive... just read them well and you will be successful. listen to the force.... listen to the intuition within you. the seve chakras of the earth are connected to the seven chakras of your body. connect to them like i have been. mother earth (ghaya) loves you already and wants to protect you because you and i and everyone whom primarily rides a bike and not a car.... ghaya, mother earth. she love syou and protects you always. listen to that intuition. i know you all have it. be careful, be safe out there.
seve - i meant 7: the seven chakras! the seven chakras of the earth are all connected to the seven on your body!
p.s. the extend of the damages are seen on my handlebars and my rear deraileur is bent. i only made an old scab on my left elbow bleed again. the rest is a car parking light plastic (rug-burn like) scrap/burn and a tiny rope burn on my right wrist from a friendship bracelet the girl im seeing and i got as a fun and cute symbol of your bond. that's about all the physical damage besides the bumps and soreness im experiencing. but goddamn i know how to fall now, it's amazing what reflexes and falling techniques we develope on these beautiful inventions that are human powered. balance, agility, time to correct and compensate for error is amazing and has improved with time. we are all amazing. all of us, especially us fast and ridazz who commute in traffic and messenger for a living. we are absolutely fucking amazing. we are a dying breed that is re-emerging with some young and old strong ridazz. we are the urban cowboys of these times... these are some signs of the times....
damn eddie! hope you get well soon. shit. ride like cars can't see you. I'm glad you made it out alive dude...more reasons to wear a helmet out there.
good ride tonight. we really really worked the lights this time. much much better than last time. timed a lot of them and it just felt much safer and controlled.
new best time from the Encino Velodrome to Hollywood and Highland. 32.5 minutes...
toasted to our national champion BEATRIZ! how dope was that??
A speedy recovery to you!
I hope you are OK. Don't let the fucking insurance company screw you!
--------
Last night was my first WP in 3 months and possibly my most epic for several reasons.
1) my first WP fixed
2) my first time to Encino
3) my first time riding in a Velodrome
4) I missed the turn on Victory and got lost in a hilly, rich, neighborhood for 45 mins
5) I met a guy speed walking in a kilt and tank top at 1:30 am who told me how to get back.
6) On the way back I saw and caught up to 4 wolvz who got dropped due to several flat tires.
7) My first real time doing the Genie as a rolled over Cahuenga pass
8) I kept seeing shooting stars throughout the evening
I knew I was gonna get my ass kicked, but I had no idea it was gonna be so much fucking fun.
Damn Eddie! You're barely finished recovering from your last "crash." You ride like a crazy person sometimes....or at least like a suicidal. Knock it off!
Chops said you called before WP last night to see if I wanted to go, I returned you call, but it whent straight to voicemail. Maybe you were in the process of getting leveled by that car. Weird!!
okay. so i have the lady's dl, insurance and vehicle info: there was a witness but when he figured i was pretty much okay he took off before i could think of asking him to stay and tell his account of what happened and exchange info.
Any clue how i go about calling the insurance company to get compensation for my bike repairs and possible medical costs?
guise, im okay, just feel a bit sore and stiff today. I just want to get examined today or tomorrow, this week if I can get an appointment.
so any clue how i approach this with the insurance agent?
im gonna call my atty from the mta case i was in. y'all remember i was intentionally hit by a bus once? that and last night's incident are the only 2 occassions i have been hit by a car.
i've had the same scenario occur before without injury. usually a lil brush or a love bump or shrug from the car barely causing balance and equilibrim issues but it never knocked me down. similar fucking thing, the car decides to fucking turn when you are there, improvised fucking turning, arrrgggghhhh.
For getting insurance money you have to file a claim with either your own car insurance policy (if you don't have one then you have to file it with their insurance company) and make a statement to a claims agent.
If you are wanting to sue them for any reason you need to make a police statement asap.
I just went through this insurance thing.
stolbac@gmail.com
thanks! but if i was on my bike why would i want to get my insurance co for "my auto" involved. i just spoke to my atty and she told me to start a claim with the drivers insurance co. directly and describe in detail all he pain im enduring and that i am contemplating going to get examined by a dr. that's what im gonna do but if you have some more helpful advice that would be appreciated. i'll e-mail ya soon dude. thanks again!!!
gopez, You'll probably get more solid feedback if you start a new thread, cause not everybody looks at the WP thread.
I've never had this situation before, but I have heard many horror stories about dealing with the insurance. They will try to drag it out as much as possible. So definitely let them know that you have a lawyer and he will be contacting them if they do not cooperate. Also,
don't "think" about going to the doctor, do it.
If you have any pain that has not gone away by now, get treated.
They are 100% liable for all of your medical expenses.
There is a limit on how much insurance co's have to pay for property but no limit for medical.
On another note:
Last night was great fun.
Even tho I got a flat right as the pack was leaving the 'Drome.
I patched the thorn-hole and got back on the road..
Who did I see on Ventura Blvd?
Dan, Matty, and Mikey Wally all sitting on the side of the road fixing the flats that Matty got (13 thorns!)
They were just finishing as I arrived so we all rolled as a group, and then Trickmilla came chasing after us and joined the mini-pack.
See his earlier post describing his lost-adventure.
We all hustled over the pass and I headed home from H+H.
Good first ride back after a little break.
Hooray for the Hustle.
Wolfpack, like whoa. I've been bitten. That was every bit as intense as I'd expected it to be. My first of many, I hope.
I was lagging behind for most of it, but I managed to not get dropped. By the end, I had enough adrenaline and endorphins bouncing 'round my system that it would've been hard to suppress a wolfish grin. So I didn't.
Thanks, Wolfpack. That ride was awesome, as in "inspiring awe, admiration or wonder."
Wow. What a fuckin HUSTLE tonight!!!!! God damn.... wow. I got most of that run on stop motion thanks to Agent Orange for showing me the way and to mr. Rollers for hooking up my macgyver tripod properly. Video tomorrow.... good night mother fuggahs.
All City Team Race... I keep hearing whispers and rumors.... we gonna have a good ass run.
I and the pack was honored to be riding in the pack with Beatriz once again.
Hey where the hell is vspangle? She had so much promise... we need her and Annie and Tattiya back on this ride.
Where was the last stop? Cesar went to Staples Center, but no one was there? Then he went up to Tang's, but everyone was gone? What time did the pack get back to Tang's?
The last stop was tangs.... 1:22am about 42 miles.
We didn't hit the staples center. We usually do from the venice pier but tonight we rolled another route up sepulveda....
Wise... I can not believe I kept your wheel the whole way back. I know you were holding back fucker.
And SERIOUSLY What's it gonna take for you guys in the front to slow down for those blind red lights?? Does someone really have to die on this shit??????
hey hey... i just have to say thanks to everyone for a good hustle !
the ride back from venice pier was amazing and so fast!
for about 3/4 of the way back 6-7 riders in front were calling lights and cars and screaming but then we realized we were alone ... then the pace picked up
so i talked to cesar last night and I think there has been some kind of misunderstanding or a case of mistaken identity or something. He remembers me saying something along the lines of he probably wont finish if it was his first wolf pack.
I dont remember saying that but i will admit to saying retarded things every once in a while, but let me be clear, I only want to encourage people to try there best, and as far as cycling abilities go, I am a total scrub, and after watching cesar carry around all that sound shit at every ride, I know he has what it takes to whip all of our asses.
So anyways, if I said something like that, I am really sorry, I shouldnt say stuff like that at all, but I really don't think it was me that said that.
Tonight's ride was awesome. short but awesome. i did about 120miles this weekend all in all.
COACH/SC NOMAD/THE AGITATOR!!!!
Thank you so much for that SAG vehicle lift to the next stop after my flat. that was incredibly awesome and not to mention super generous of you. Thanks again Dennis!
It was also great to see Cynthia, AKA chinchilla make her triumphant debut on the huslte. She was the only hot lady in spandex out there amongst all that testosterone and she dominated the field well. she was hustling alright. Just like i knew she would. I've been inviting her for months now and it was great to see her ride with the pack tonight.
Last night was my first Wolfpack finish! I would have been up in the front with the group... but I stayed back... ya know... to uhhhh... make sure no one got left behind.... like myself.
I have to say that these guys and gals are the real deal! So nice and supportive, organized, and they really look out for one another.
Yesterday would have been the perfect recovery for you. Looked like a brisk pace but not as fast as the usual. I didn't even break a sweat, the speedo on my car did not past 20 mph.
you mean you didn't break a sweat in your speedos because you were not riding on your speedos you driving in them. btw you hauled ass to get me caught up at the next stop. thx again.
An observation I made while following the pack in my car Monday. I do not know who the people are cause if I did I would have talk to them personally. But here is what I saw:
While on Sunset towards downtown, the pack was taking both lanes on traffic (nothing really wrong with that). But here is where it get dangerous, the cars are starting to pile behind the pack waiting for the a lane to clear. Someone calls 'car back' or something and the left lane clears. As the cars start going to the left lane to pass, someone darts into the left lane without looking back. This happened at least 5 times, down Sunset, Glendale and probably the closest call was on Washington.
On Washington a car almost took out a big chunk of the pack. Same scenario there were about 6 cars behind you. The cars trying to find an opportunity to pass. The left lane clears, a car darts for the opening, someone cuts him off. Car hits brakes, the 3rd car was caught inattentive and swerves to avoid hitting the car in front of him. I happen to see everything and gave the car enough room to get in front of me. But know the driver is irate and blows by you guys.
Here is a solution, call 'car back'. On multiple lane roads give up a lane, move to the right lane. At the time of night we ride, traffic comes in waves. It just takes a few seconds to move to the right lane, let the cars past and take a many lanes as you need.
LA is shrinking man. fucking powered Glenoaks last night. damn.
btw GREAT work on stopping for that cop last night. Glendale cops are not fun. But when he saw how disciplined we were in stopping he let us go ahead and run the light. thanks officer.
I was the guy in the yellow shirt last night. Just wanted to say thanks everyone for a f-ing stupendous ride. That was my first hustle ride and I'm a believer now. Nothing like going fast on a bicycle with a bunch of fellow masochists
1. No drinking / no one is drunk
2. no EGOS
3. cooperative competiton
4. intense workout
5. all out HUSTLE from start to finish
6. everyone looks out for each other
7. random people who show up from cities around the world
8. we co-exist with traffic very well including group lane changes
8. Johnell
I am trying to help out my friend Rebecca (the girl that had a terrible crash on the pier last year)
Her lawyer is asking if anyone else could help provide any memories of what happened that night. I remember it like it was yesterday, but she needs us to step up and offer any info that might help her win her case.
Roadblock any pics you shot that night, please find and email to me. Also if anyone remembers the mishandling of her body by the Paramedics, that would be of much help.
Thanks guys and gals. Email me colemaness AT hotmail . com
I saw Rebecca spill at a distance. I have this crazy memory of her getting up, taking her helmet off and throwing it on the ground in anger before everybody got her to lay down and stay still. We hung out there until the paramedics arrived. I don't remember anything particular about how they handled her.
I remember seeing her bike and the fork was badly bent, her tire touching the frame, seemingly the reason she flipped. remember hearing her front tire hissing and quickly draining of air immediately after the crash.
I don't suppose any of the stuff helps, but i can always be contacted at
trickmilla *at* aol *dot* com
I've got a 50 cm all carbon frame and fork for sale. It is a compact frame so it can work for someone who rides a 52 cm. I will bring tonight. Looking for $150.
i assume wolfpack is on for tommorow; but it's not listed in 'upcoming ridezz' - don you must be falling behind working on that all city team race video...
I haven't missed a Wolfpack ride in 89 weeks, so I'm terribly bummed that I won't be there tonight. I'll still do my 100 WPNrides, just no longer all in a row.
Riding with the pack has made me a much better rider in so many ways. So huge thanks to Wolfrider1 and Roadblock for continuing to host the best hustle around week after week.
I was the last down the hill (Sepulveda) only to see the blur of flashing red tail lights in the far distance. Now to catch a few warriors on a mission from God: catch the Pack. Brent was one and Pisano, the fixie and a few others who joined to catch the pack with an amazing effort.
Then, we were bombarded by Jonall at Tang's for hitin' Twenty Foo all the back and bein' the first one there. I nickname him: Sure 'Nuff.
fuckin weaksauce frame. everything about that bike gave out on me in just two years.... some to be expected some not. I needed new wheels because the spokes on the stock wheels broke several times a month. I needed new cranks cause the stock ones stripped. new drive train new derailleur and now the weld at the bottom bracket sliced completely through. fortunately specialized has lifetime warranty, unfortunately I wont be getting the new frame in time for next monday.. gonna hit the bicycle kitchen yo.
Don,
I'ma put down 50 cents for every mile I coast along on your wheel. I say it's the FASTEST and SAFEST way to cross town! Sign up a couple more high speed commuters and you could finance a new Ti frame. In the meantime I'll keep my eyes peeled for a big rig.
James
Good news! Jim Bledsoe at the bike kitchen took me under his wings and HOOKED it UP. We rolled after hours and Switched all my components off the specialized right on to the new Cannondale! Can't believe everything fit perfect. I had a good feelin about that frame. stiffer frame and bigger just went on a test run with Chris tang's. Rides REAL NICE.
MOI! You crazy soul you. I hope you are taking pictures and enjoying every mile.
I would expect a fast ride, requiring you to hustle, and ride in a pack, I'd also expect 25-35 miles. We stop for drink/food about every 8-10 miles, so you may want to bring money.
If you are out of shape, you may be dropped, or at least follow our blinking lights for a while and catch us at the next stop. In this case, be sure you pay attention when the route is shouted out. Or you may find yourself dropped, and lost.
XPC, WITHOUT THE ARROGANT TONE BRA. ive seen your arrogance take the best of u my friend. be a humble wolf, be more like an omega. true alphas dont send out vibes of arrogance like u do. just ride n talk about how freaking awesome the ride is without the unnecessary n false intimidation u try n give the newbies or new inquirers. u an i have had this talk here b4. easy boy!!!
Eddie, If you thought I was trying to discourage riders from coming out you're mistaken. I simply stated that some may fall behind. Which IMO is a fair warning.
Anyways, Great ride tonight, It really kicked my ass.
Also, That gate could of been bad news, good thing no one got hurt.
Also Also,
I was looking at some crankmob photos before I left for wolfpack, and spotted Candy Cane Bike Girl and then we run into her and a tallbike rider at Staples Center. Cool bike.
i would only now i broke my collar bone... at least 2 months b4 i can. early in september they stole my roadbike and all i have now is my new khs flight100 track: fixie/singlespeed 44/16
(74.3metric inches per pedal stroke) n still would not be able too keep up on most climbs (if the case were i didnt have a broken collarbone). i would surely get dropped on that during the climbs. i miss my roadbike, please do keep your eyes peeled for it still.
i do have to admit though... i have a flip/flop hub w/ a 16 tooth freewheel and ive used it once for one commute. ive never flipped it back from fixed since because its too much fun!
cyn,
see! aren't you glad i brought you out to your first WPH??? Now you're hooked on that adrenaline rush that won't let you go to sleep for hours after the rides are done. Im so glad you like it. Can't wait to see you out there slingshotting around us at the summit of a hill when we are all spent from climbing. you're back wheel sucking and slingshotting at the summit technique is superb. I like it. damn, i kissed your ass again.
Hey Now,
I like to do Highland Park up the 2/Angeles Crest to at least Clear Creek, but with someone to ride with maybe we go farther??? p.s. this is James with the black on black on black carbon roadbike (now with matching WPH spoke card yo!). Sundays or earlier on Saturday. Nice little climb and its all WHOOP WHOOP back down!!!
Horse Sense, Black on Black on Black. Hmm, doesn't ring a bell. Although , it's all good. Hopefully Roadblock will ride and I'll draft on his wheel all the way up ANGELES CREST HWY !! LOL... I reckon I ought to bake him some cookies for all the tows !!!!
Chinchilla,
...I'm thinking Saturday so I can rest a little on Sunday, and be strong for the Hustle on Monday, but I'll do Sunday if that works for you....and yeah Roadblock is welcome on any ride that dude pulls like a freight train.
Chinchilla,
Saturday it is. We could meet at BudgetPro bike shop at the Eagle Rock plaza (I go there and bug TonyZ every chance I get) or we could meet somewhere else like Auntie Em's to fuel up on the worlds best coconut cupcakes. I have been wanting to get into some longer rides to get ready for the (sound the trumpets) WPH Century next month. You can call or text me at 323 899-8898...
Hey guys
Some of you know me; I'm Lexi (Shankster) from SD. I rode the LA-SD ride last November, and Roadblock, I think you gave me Ben gay and Popeye's bicycle spinach =).
anyway, i moved out to DC and started a wolfpack style ride out here; we'd like to call it wolfpack if you guys don't mind, but don't want to step on any toe clips. Trying to bring some ridazz fun to federal disneyland!
Also, if any of you guy/girls are ever in town and want a bike-friendly place to stay, message me (ashankster at google's free email service).
the Hustle Ride does not ever stop. be it rain, snow, earthquakes, hail, hell fire, acid rain, locusts, nuclear holocaust, terrorist strikes, civil unrest, famine, riots, republican presidency, the new world order and the like.
GET YOUR FUCKIN' SLEEP. YOU'RE GONNA NEED IT TO GET UP AT SOME FUCKING POINT IN THE DAY TO GO VOTE FOR FUCKIN' BARRACK FUCKIN' OBAMA BETWEEN THE HOURS OF 08:00HRS AND 20:00HRS.
IT'S FUCKIN' ORDER FROM COMANDANTE EDUARDO "GOpez" LóPEZ of the BICYCLE BRIGADE OF EL PUEBLO DE NUESTRA SEÑORA DE LOS ANGELES. CALIFORNIA
la duderina. nasty battle damage last night. I'd say look into gatorskin tires. Before i started to come out to LA Rides, I decided to switch out my stock tires to Gatorskins. Ive been riding with wolfpack and bicykillers for 2 months straight now and I have yet to get a flat (knocks on wood). I personally vouch for these tires and wouldnt hesitate to buy another pair when the time comes. Also, I top off before EVERY ride I do... i guess that helps too. LA Streets are vicious.. who cares about "Optimum PSI". Max that shit out..
It was really my fault though, not the tire's. That tire was on its last legs when I bought that bike a couple weeks back. I'm STUPID for not having replaced it sooner. I just kept putting it off so long it didn't even cross my mind before I left last night...even though I had just finished fixing a flat on the front tire! I was too stoked to go out and haul some ass ha.
Entirely appropriate that it should finally shred to pieces on wolfpack though, right? lol
I felt like such a quitter for leaving the ride early... my first time ever, by the way. But having only ridden 25 miles by 1 am... I had to bail cuz I had to get up at 6 the next morning.
I'll make up for it on the Century ride tho.
cant wait. :)
hey what is that pretty painting that was posted on the listing for the ride a couple of weeks back? the one with the wolf chewing on a spear?
it looked like part of a larger painting and i'd like to see the whole thing, and know who painted it and when.
thanks
