I humbly suggest going to Austin any time except during SXSW. It will be kind of hard to see Austin when every square inch of it is covered with Industry weasels and hangers-on.

Then we'll have some extra space in the van...aaaannnd I am also thinking if people are interested in this we can build a trailer for all the bikes! I wouldn't mind towing em at all!! Then we would have a trailer for future trips too!
Just bear in mind that if you build a trailer, somebody is going to have to register it with the DMV under the PTI program and get a plate, VIN, etc. The fees aren't that much, and they're good for five years, but they will want to inspect it first, so try to stay sober while you're designing it.

Like all of TX there is no seasonal climate per se, it changes daily, hourly. It could be between 40-80 degress anytime of the year. Summers are def. hot, Winter's def. cold...I suggest June or so because Texas summers rule, we'll be outside riding and occupying porches 24-7 and not give a f* how sweaty we get! Oh, I miss you TX..
"NO BIKE CULTURE" haha, you should re-think that one before you go. Jeez, The Yellow Bike Program started there! They have a decent Critical Mass (bigger than LACM) and have wild-asses like Skid Marxxx and Black Label. If it was that bloody in Portland I am expecting even more blood and diseasezz...
Also, Its a 22-25 hour drive there, so likely you'd want a whole week to be free. Or at least I would, after driving that far to get there.
I'm sticky to my suggestion on doing this during SXSW event. Sure there's going to be alot of schmucks from LA, so what? For those that have gone to SXSW, I could see why you wouldn't want to go again. Hell I would too more than likely. But for those that want to do the trip, SXSW is just an extra tossed in.

i hear that every bar in town has a cramed/good line up thru out sxsw alot of indie stuff, id say it be nice to go to sxsw,,if that was the sole purpose..sure great music lotsa out of towners only keep the party going.. i our case i think we should bring our own party and really catch a feel for the city, ride with townies ,check local dives,get reasonable logding, i dunno kind of like base our whole attention on this beautiful city and what its got to offer.

I'm also against going during SXSW, for the reason stated above. The demand for everything is going to higher during that time, it may make it more difficult to do something, or see something, and your patronage will not be as appreciated, during that time.

Heard plenty of good things about Austin.
Too bad I was forced into hyperspace when approaching it in my recent rig-jockey days.
Lot's of techno-industry, artisans, and all those other types you would usually associate with a "happening" city.
Hell, they even have my usual favorite places that I won't even bother mentioning.
So, if this trip is in April, it could still be doable.
That all depends on how my actions right now dictate future events.
Possible scenarios making it possible for me to get down there.
1)Take a week off from work/potential college classes and join y'all.
2)I've been miraculously re-inserted to the trucking hive and get a load out there like PDX.
3)Pull an "Into The Wild" after a stressful stretch of hard work, and ride my ass down there.
Whatever the outcome, Sirius Satellite is playing a major role in this operation.
Austin is a very cool city. Last time I was there, some people in a house just put my friends and I up for the weekend without even knowing who we were.

whenever works for me....i have a four bedroom house with room mates, but i can squezze folks into one of the rooms and some downstaris on the couch....just bring a blanket and pillow.
and for some of the other comments about ATX and no bike sceen that is retarded, there is a BIG scene here and our rides that we have every month are awesome...we have critical mass, our full moon rides (every full moon) midnight ridazz rides (organized by Jessica) cemetery cats pub crawl rides (pub crawl every sunday w/ midnight ridazz and cemetery cats) and all sorts of other rides and races every month...
this city is awesome and the only place to be if you live in TX.
I welcome all ridazz!!! to my city, make sure you can go up a few hills though, because we do have those. I run 47x14 fixed, and it can get a little rough

its a really long drive... but driving would probably be your best option...just because the flying thing would get really expensive... however if you do decide to fly im sure with everyones combined extra bikes we would have enough for you guys
I drive from Los Angeles to Louisiana regularly. I have an SUV and a 3 unit bike rack and I know that it will only cost around $300.00 for gas, hotel room, and trucker speed to get there. Maybe even less cause ive got friends that would give up floor space. I may enjoy a trip to Austin since Ive not been in that area in almost a year.
FYI - Trucker speed can be substituted for food anytime!

I was told by my former company that I could reapply after every six months to drive again.
If freight is high this year and they're starving for drivers, I'm hoping "corporate desperation" will blow in my favor.

I am having to go back to Louisiana in April to go pick up my car (Rav4) and drive it back to LA. I could plan around this trip so that I can shuttle 1 or 2 folks and their bikes back with me. I have friends along the way in major cities that we could more than likely crash at too.
I'm for the middle of October, June/July will just be miserable to be in TX. Why would we want to leave southern california at that time of the year anyways? Unless we are have some mild summer, which who Knows?

My timing suggestion would be to ask people to take 5 days off of work maximum....whether because people don't get paid vacation or because people only get so many vacation days, asking any more is too much.

It would actually make more sense to leave a whole day earlier. That way we could make the most of our riding time on the weekends. If it turns out that we can't, then we can keep it at 5 week days only.
That's not what I want to hear. I want us ALL to make it happen. I'm wishing we will have a Ridazz BUS by then. I'm wishing we all communicate with Austin Bike Folks and figure out lodging and food and general activities for the duration. I wish that we all are equally motivated to work together to make this happen.

@borfo, how can I help to make this happen, then? You clearly have a vision. I have the type of work schedule, that it doesn't matter to me WHEN. All the matters to me are costs. Those are what I need to see so I can make my final decision. I believe THAT is what most people are waiting for. Just like Portland, and all other trips we have done. People will get there on their own if the "organized" travel arrangements don't work for everyone.
Once the dates to be in Austin are settled, I'm sure we'll be able to do the next step, figure out how to get there.

Really think about this whole 10 days. Can people get away for ten days. Can they afford the cost of a ten day trip. Can they really get away for that long. People go to Europe for 10 days, not Texas.
If we stay at peoples houses, are they going to appreciate us staying 10 days. Remember the guest/fish analogy, after three days you and the fish start to stink.
I for one can not get away for that long. I really don't know if other can get away or afford that expense. If they can, more power to them. I just don't see it being reasonable.
If you want everybody to help plan this, don't blow up or get sad, if somebody has a different view point. (FYI Stepanie, I've been harrassing Joe, all afternoon, it is a dance that we do) When I bring up your wife, I'm not poking, I respect your marriage, thats why I'm being serious about this, I know your home situation (I might not know about this trip in particular). I think it is a long time. Don't go being rash and say "all right then, you make the dates"! Lets talk about this and work out a good time. Weight out all the "pros and cons" of a certain date and decide what would be best.
If the majority can do 10 days, then so be it. I think it is pie in the sky, and as the time comes closer, less people will be able to do that many days.
Another note, we party hard. I mean, to the point where it takes most of us a few days after the weekend to be back to normal. The weekend in Portland probably took six months off each of your lives. I know this life style has a price. Just the mother of all rides and San Diego, kicked my ass, something serious. I had to sleep in Tuesday to get myself back in shape. Can we really live like that and survive for 10 days, I know I can't.
As for having a child, it will change your life, but you are not going to be buried and not be able to go out and play. You will still be coming out, as long as you desire it. It will be your choice. I see it with friends who have kids all the time. I have even seen families at Burning Man.

My vision of this entails that we camp, that we make friends with Austin Ridazz and stay with them, we cook for ourselves, we look after each other.
You did not go to Portland, which was quite an experiment. Sure there were some accidents, but we learn from our mistakes. Portland bike community has a lot more respect for us now because of the trip. I am hoping we can do the same and even better for the community in Austin.

4th of July most everybody already gets off, so It would only equal to 4 business days.
Just imagine, We take Thursday the 26 or Friday the 27th, Either way its going to take us at least a day and a half to get there. We are going to be beat by the time we arrive. Saturday we would have a chance to do a ride. Sunday as well. During the week days, we could ride and explore on our own a different way each day. Then the 4th of July weekend should be chock full of insanity. We would probably have to leave Saturday, night. (bummer) Or Sunday the 6th all the way back home....
I guess we could chop shorter so that we leave on the July 1st so that we could be rested and ready for the Weekend events and leave on Sunday to arrive Monday evening. Using up a total of 4 work days...
Should we do that instead? If that sounds more feasible , then I'm willing to hack of one of the weekends.
Start scouring the links on this site for info what is happening on the potential dates. Please? Tell me when Jessica's Midnight Ridazz is and Critical mass and Frankenbike, etc..
I'm not saying it can't be done. I'm just saying...dude, it's ten days. Some people will be able to do it, many won't.
The best--or at least the simplest and least clusterfucky--way to handle it may be to organize two "trips"--one long one and one short one, with the short trip happening within the date window of the long one. That way, there will be at least a few days where everybody is together, but you can still accommodate people who have varying degrees of responsibility to non-Ridazz entities like jobs and families.
Well, in the case I'm not able to come, will someone please fly the image on my profile as a flag?
I'll even find the necessary cloth and printscreen shop to have one made.

IF YOU FLY, you lose .5 days to travelling.
Think about it. Weigh these options. Also consider how fun driving can be if you have Ridazz with you, esp. flying in a bus-castle. Flying not so much. Just thoughts...
Its fucking far, guys. The above date is perfect, July 4th is a given. Just take 4-5 days off.
Also, the city of Austin just got electricity, and rumor is they'll have interwebs come JU-ly. Just sayin, check into your "office" or whatever it is you play hooky from while reading this site all day.

I dont care what anyone says about SXSW, those have been some of my most memorable, fun, CHEAP to FREE, amazing, weeks in ATX ever!
BUying a wristband is not necessary at all. THere are free open bar parties every day and night. Everyone walks or rides around on bikes. Its the perfect trip for ridazz to go on.
I am ending my winter trip by flying into austin mar 16-23rd. It would be so amazing of lots of you great people are there too.
I know I can help get people places (w/ in biking distance)to stay for free. Then maybe I can get yall to bring me my bike!! : )

whenever works for me....i have a four bedroom house with room mates, but i can squezze folks into one of the rooms and some downstaris on the couch....just bring a blanket and pillow.
