I am at LACM and FUCK FIREWORKS. I just had to dodge a fucking cylinder of gun powder flying towards my face.
CRANK MOB FIREWORKS ARE GOOD. THEY ARE FAR AWAY. PLEASE KEEP THEM AWAY FROM FELLOW RIDAZZ.

I was on a ride recently and someone was throwing rockets at people on the street. This gives ridazz a bad name. This makes people afraid when they see a group of bicyclists on the street. This is not the image we want to give people. If a pedestrian gets hit by that shit, its all over.
If you are going to launch off rockets, don' t just throw them on the ground. Launch them in the air where innocent people arn't standing.

Quit trying to police everybody's fun!
These rides are about individual indulgence, not about trying to create some sort of greater community. If people want to get too drunk to cycle safely or throw fireworks at bystanders or steal shit or tag, that's their decision. These rides are non-confrontational, so stop trying to bring everybody down with your rules, you fascist.
(In case you didn't catch on, that was sarcasm, I'm sorry you almost got blown up and am glad you're ok. I just wanted to cut to the chase, as that's where these discussions always end up. Some people can't understand the difference between laws that are broken as an act of civil disobedience in order to make a point about cyclists rights and well-being and keep the group moving as a cohesive unit, and laws that affect individuals' rights to personal safety and private property, and use the group as cover for their own stupidity, which sucks.)

I saw the guy preparing the fireworks at the CM start. Although i have a bigger problem with Fireworks on the Westside where the Police are a little less tolerant of us and i prefer not to keep 'poking the bees nest'. I'd rather stay under the radar and keep partying without alerting cops or anyone where we are.
But downtown, there are less cops, less people and more open streets for those to light the FW off if they must. But lighting them off so close to people ( i was about 10 feet away) is just plain irresponsible. I didn't say anything at the start because i figured it would be fine since we were going downtown but now i'm regretting it.

I sometimes wonder if a well-aimed, paintball gun would be a good way to knock out a potentially, harmful firework.
Kind of like those Phalanx, CIWS' that are used on board aircraft carriers to shoot down missiles.

It seems as though the answer to our recent problems (safety, stealing, etc) is that each of us take responsibility for the whole group. Preventative action by talking to ridazz who are riding crazy, or talking to those making fireworks, or i know that if i'm in line at the 7 eleven and i see a rider going to steal something i will say "don't even think of stealing on this ride". If i see someone running out the door with a 30 pack, i'm going to tackle them and return the beer. I haven't and wouldn't have done this before, but since the grateful dead ride, things have changed for me. I'm not saying any of yous should do the same, but if you tolerate it, it will continue, and I won't accept it.

I would also go to great lengths to say that the hot-weather has ballooned the crowd, as well as brought the petty-thugs out of hiding.
While the weather was cold, I rarely saw any postings here in regards to any errant behavior(save for my ass plowing into Leo on that rain-soaked, Valley-escapade).
I say we just try to hold shit together until the Holidays.
By then, I'm betting real money that the shit-makers will be too chilled to their ass to want to try anything stupid, let alone go outside and catch a head-cold.

Yes, I couldn't agree with you more. I've been riding for almost a year now and what impressed me from my very first ride (Storm the Pier II) was the sense of community that I felt on the ride. I didn't know anyone but I really felt that everyone was really looking out for each other. I think that the recent surge of self-indulgent activities on rides (theft and fireworks) threatens that community if no one speaks up against it when they see it. The last two times that I have seen irresponsible fireworks at play (almost setting a tree on fire and throwing a lit rocket into an alley full of pedestrians) you can bet I've said something and you can bet that it stopped. We are a community and people in this community who think that this sort of behavior is dangerous and irresponsible need to speak up whenever they see it happening. Nip it in the bud! Who's got their bud nippers? I know I do.

I agree that there is something lacking in the sense of a communal spirit that these rides used to have. How do you think we can improve on instilling a stronger sense of community back into Midnight Ridazz? I'm just curious if you had any solutions.
I really think theres no point in telling these kids what to do. Hopefully they will develop some common sense and not do anything that will cause the authorities to bring these rides down that have been carefully and thoughtfully developed after so long. There's nothing you can do. Just find rides that still have that sense about them. They are out there.
I encourage anyone who has never had a chance to take a trip to Burning Man. Despite all it's rap, it still has a unique sense of community to it and I believe it may inspire and educate a lot of people who don't quite get it yet.
Anyway, just giving my opinion. It's not like I'm not going to get pigeoned as an uptight asshole or whatever it is they are saying.
There's nothing you can do.

The two times that I mentioned above, I spoke to the person doing it and they stopped. No backtalk, no complaining. They will probably do it again on other rides, but at least on those rides it stopped. If everytime someone does something irresponsible that endangers other people and someone spoke up about it, it would stop eventually. Or at least mostly.

Part of me really tries to stay out of the whole forum flame war nonsense, because I agree it can often seem silly and pointless and nonproductive.
But then part of me believes that, if the voices of reason become deafening, then the voices of stupidity will either realize the error of their ways and become responsible members of the community -- or they will tire of being constantly rebuked and simply leave. Either outcome seems to be a positive one.

Those fire works were a stupid ass idea, wtf is the point of throwing one in a trash can when it can easily set up fire. Especially at a place where we constantly meet up for rides.

I met the guy with the fireworks he seemed like a cool guy, but some of his ideas for fun with fireworks were definitely on the extreme side to say the least.
At the start point he was saying that he would prefer to land fireworks on car hoods & windshields. I don't know if he was serious (sure as hell seemed like it) but he even went on to say that he would be aiming to land fireworks in open car windows!!!!!!! WTFASDFJLS:KDHNT
I said to him "EHHHHH I dunno man!!". I asked him what would happen if one of those went off in your lap. I asked him what kind of a reputation that would instantly give us. He then said "Yeah I guess that's not such a good idea..." The fireworks he prepared could completely remove a hand, according to him. HOLY FUCKING YIKES DUDES. Then we made small talk for a while and I checked out his bike! Definitely a cool guy but dude was just way too extreme with fireworks & clearly was not thinking about consequences of his decisions.
I 100% agree with the comment about keeping the fireworks in the sky for all to see and enjoy. We could use more of that, those are just fucking sweet and will never go out of style.

The respect and admiration I have for the MR community is not something that developed overnight, and the sincerity of those feelings is much deeper now than when I first started going on the rides.
For me this growth has been 100% attributable to the examples set by others Ridazz in the community. Every rider that would pull over and help fix a bike, lend a cell phone, go out of their way to see a group of riders back to familiar territory, hand out beer, speak up when someone's doing something stupid/dangerous, etc. Every time you do these things you set an example for new riders.
Unfortunately, every time you do something stupid you're also setting an example for new riders. So like Roadblock says, 'be the change you want to see in others.' People do notice and it does have and effect.

Those fireworks on the last LACM ride were weak. They didn't even explode like fireworks were suppose to. They sounded like rejects from some third world country! Yeah if one had blowup next to you, it would hurt or have your ears ringing, but loose a hand??? Hardly. And yes I was right next to one at the China Town stop. I was surprised at how lame that one was tell you the truth!
Now the ones at the Crank mob ride, those were epic! And yes I saw that they were quite responsible. And no I don't think it really signals to the cops we're here. It signals to the cops that that was an illegal fireworks that just went off. To him, that's a low priority.
