I'm slowly becoming convinced that this forum can only be saved by moderation.

iiiii know... i was just saying this on another thread.. we tell people to come to this website and then they read the forums and their thinking... why are these people so mean, all they do is talk shit.. it didnt used to be like that untill we have the trolls that just sit there and talk shit about people and rides behind a fake persona... if you need help moderating let me know!

Any Forum breeds trolls and to me that is the byproduct of anonymity in internet culture. There are good trolls and bad trolls and we all like to joke and have fun. I understand the focus should be on Riding and bike related stuff but you will always have a certain amount of noise.
I am not sure about moderators though. Where do you draw the line? I have seen forum nazis take over and try to control forums because they are mods.
I like the idea of a thread voting system, so you can vote up or vote down a topic much like DIGG.
My 2 cents only worth 1 cent in these tough times.

Instead of (or in addition to) moderators, how about just providing some categories?
That way, instead of one open forum, we can have sub-forums for rants/bike activism/lolcats/stolen bikes/fundraisers/rides/events/bike shops/miscellaneous.

place the breast in a ziploc bag and press all the air out. place the bag in a bowl of cool water and agitate occasionally. if the water gets too cold, add a little bit of hot water. you want the chicken to thaw slowly and completely. if you use hot water, it will cook the outside first while the center is still frozen.

Moderation encourages people to be precisely as uncivil as the moderators will allow. And when someone gets called out for pulling some borderline offensive bullshit, they will say "hey now, I don't see the moderators complaining." Thus, you end up with a perception of order, but with an atmosphere of constant passive aggression.
I wouldn't object if the forums adopted something like Slash or Scoop. Threading! Comment ratings! Yay! But that wouldn't make people less stupid. Stupid people are here to stay.

you guys post all the time... that must mean you, to some degree, must like it
and if you don't, stop using it... let the people who do enjoy it have it, and just stick to doing what you like
the forum here is something unique and awesome and while there isn't always something good in here... every so often it either makes me cry laughing, gets me into an interesting discussion, and in general it provides me with a unique way to interact with people whom i'd probably not otherwise.
say what you will about the forum, but i think in the end you will realize that despite all the things you hate about it, you won't want to let it go

You already moderate the forums to some small extent.
When people croos the line . or you find content that is dangerous, !@#$?phobic or racist you usually just erase it.
• I'm not really sure what officially "moderating" would actually comprise.
But one step would be to put a reminder at the top of the forums of what type of content is acceptable.
• when 2.0 comes out i am guessing it will have different sections this will help keep the pointless crap in its own place.
• 3) as long as MR remains not for profit and community based you can expect people to be willing to volenteer for free, a tiny stipend, or perhaps some other perks (shop discounts, free fluffing, bike co-op membership etc.)
• with the help of technology the community can help by self policing ... like the flagging system on craigslist. combine that with a group of volunteers that can ocassionaly check out the list of flagged posts and it could be a very low maintainence job.
• I would want us to error on the side of free speech except in cases of oppressive, violent, or threatening language.
Its wise to consider this cause stuff does sometimes get ugly here and if 2.0 goes as planned every fucking jackass on the planet on two wheels will be coming here chewing up our bandwidth with their infantile potty humor (in between planning shitloads of bike rides).

Some of the comments in the threads are so negative. Going off topic is fun and silly and community building, but the negativity is really a bummer.
I don't care what people think about Midnight Ridazz and I don't think other people really care either. Which is fine. Sometimes when I tell people I ride a bike, they say, "So, do you do those big rides? What's that called? Midnight...Mass...something like that?" MR is realistically such a subculture that it doesn't affect the majority of people - they are too busy reading celeb gossip, getting gauged at movie theaters, and shopping aimlessly at the mall to care. Those who are interested are perhaps fundamentally a little more radical and the forum doesn't matter...they are already in.
But the negativity is counterproductive to everyone and especially to those who write it - it's just exasperating. It becomes a terrible self-perpetuating cycle. Perhaps banning consistent negativity would be a plus, perhaps other posters could vote...some sort of comment rating system, so the better comments would rise to the top while the worse ones sink. People can vote individuals off the island...and if the vote seems unfair, the person can appeal.
Maybe. I don't know. Whatever you do, not everyone is going to be happy with it. That's just a reality. So go with what you think is right and hope for the best.

and to be fair, i found this exploit from a typo.
i could've gone the old ijunes route and blasted every thread on the top 20 with the same such code.
but RB prevented that by adding 250 topics to the list.
