CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM ONLY. PLEASE DON'T POST UNLESS YOU HAVE SOMETHING VALID TO SAY:
I've heard a lot of criticism of CM, and I have a few suggestions myself. CM is a great way to get new people on bikes, but if we allow douchebags to exist unabated, they will be the only ones left.
Here are the problems that I saw or heard about from others:
-cops are pissed when we run red lights
-stores are pissed that kids are stealing
-nobody is holding their line, or listening to the OG's.
Here are some ideas for solutions:
CORK MOB:
Educate corkers about why we cork, and why we are polite to drivers. Also, make flyers to distribute to cars and cops (possibly two separate flyers?)
SAFE MOB
Bring more people into the fold, make it cool to lecture the noobs. We need all the help we can get and we should be asking everyone for it.
SANE MOB
Come up with a different script for SAFE MOB: emphasis on NOT stealing (there’s plenty of free beer), being polite to cars, and a better explanation of “hold your line” possibly with pictures.
BULLHORNS:
AT brings up a good point:
“[I]f you're not universally known, aggressively calling someone out isn't as likely to work. They'll think, "who the fuck is this guy?" And they'll tell you to fuck off.”
BULLHORN=AUTHORITY.
Bullhorns have proven to be a great way of announcing dangers as well as making FUN. Let’s start using it to keep hipsters from crashing into each other.
!!!ALSO!!! with regard to running red lights:
While it may be best to keep the main group together, there are always "stragglers" at the end who get caught at the red lights. Since the cops are usually at the back of the ride, it may serve us well to show them we're making an effort, by directing traffic with our bullhorns:
-the front of the ride is not affected
-the back stops for lights anyway.
-nobody gets confused and runs the light alone
-the cops like us because we are listening to their one most reasonable request.

if they wanted to ride bikes, they would be doing so already. they would need a drunken underage mass on wheels to fit in, if you catch what im scratching at.

it's not about being safe enough. people are getting seriously hurt, and cops and drivers are getting pissed off at us. we are scaring newcomers who don't come back a second time.
like it or not, there are problems that need addressing. with all due respect guys, if you just want to complain about the people who ride on crank mob, go talk about it on another thread.
some people actually care enough to want to change something.

Force people to ride without corkers and not in any sort of traffic stopping mass. All this corking bullshit is giving people the wrong perception of riding in traffic.
these bitches cry bout vehicle rights, yet you blow through reds, drink tallcans while operating your “vehicle”, kick other cars, etc etc. you fucking hypocrite clowns, I fucking hope you get greased the next time you act stupid.

stopping for lights is a debate. if we don't stop for lights, we keep the group together. if we do stop for lights, we piss off fewer people. i'd like to prevent douchey behavior while changing CM as little as possible.

i wish the search function on this board was better so i could find the thread that was made after THE VERY FIRST CRANK MOB where someone complained about all this stuff that we have been for months and months and months. he brought his kids and wife with him and they left after the mob (of maybe 15?) were antagonizing traffic and hanging out in a parking garage. serious lulz.

not a bad idea. i'm sure we'd still get volunteers, but having someone at every intersection would serve as a good example to the first-time corker.
plus, there is the issue of manpower: we don't have enough quality people to do everything that needs to get done. we need to turn the noobs into quality people.

remember, all this bicycle business started to raise bicycle awareness and to show drivers thats its not a big deal to share roads.

corkers should be folks that are quick on their feet and folks that know how to deal with situations such as irritated drivers.

this whole asshole-ness problem is going to fix itself.

we're still having trouble with peoples bikes getting stolen.
im sorry say this but these idiot kids are that stubborn. after theyre friends bikes have been stolen, they continue to not give a shit, and then they come cry on this forum after their shit gets swooped.

That's well-said KIMS1.
Too many of the first-timers seem to not have much "solo" experience and feel naked once they have broken off from the pack.
I say we pull each little group aside to sell the idea of "commute-cycling".
As for me, I've ridden for too many years without knowing the satisfaction of riding with a bunch of cool people.
I find these rides as my way to unwind, when I'm not able to make it to one of these, riding by myself is just as normal as playing a video game.

my favorite crank mob wasnt when i drank three cans of joose and passed out in a park on one of the windiest nights ever on the westside before slowly making my way back to spooks apartment where he graciously let me sleep for a few hours. it wasnt my shared birthday crank mob with katiepoche last year, it was when some drunk guy who looked like he was near 40 reliving his childhood and not paying attention and hitting the median on some street and his lifeless body flying into oncoming traffic. finally being put into a position where i was able to use my life saving skills, but instead calling 911, because the guy wasnt moving and i didnt want to roll him over (even though i know how to properly do so). bike riding is so much fun.

One of top ten reasons why I enjoy it for the "outlaw concept".
Better than all the humdrumedness that I encounter on a daily basis.

And the way I see it, it was formed on the Westside, so there's no chance it will wander away and infect other regions of the Southland.
The problems associated are more of a centralized problem to this ride, I've rarely heard of this madness being reported at other rides.
Do what you will, but the way I see it, this ride goes from good-to-bad-to-good-bad, this is schizophrenia on a grand scale, sucka's!!

I don't think crank mob is much different from any other huge ride I've been on in terms of safety / drunkenness / recklessness. The only thing that separates it (in my opinion) is the dancing and stellar ratio of girls to guys.

i enjoyed crank mob.
the route was sick, you guys had a fucking band play in an albertsons parking lot (i mean, wtf, thats pretty rad), it was a lot of cool shit.
but what bothers me was the crowd.
just a lot of folks not comfortable on their bikes, not paying attention, just drunkos, and the god awful amount of kids.
i think the reason i like the eastside and valley rides the most is bc thats where my peers are at.
maybe im just jealous of these young ass kids in SMA with their sweet ass cinelli's hahahha.

agreed i've eaten shit in front of people more than i can count.
i just can't afford it now. i've been putting in a lot of work and effort. hence why i havent been to a ride i should've been fucked up at in a good 2 months.
i also don't think anybody who is enrolled in a k-12 school can both handle their alcohol AND ride on a bike.
its bad enough they don't know the law and don't wear helmets.

I love Crank Mob and I'd love it if everyone that showed up knew how to go down a hill without falling over and getting run over and causing a general clusterfuck. Seriously saw like five people just fall over when they first started going down the hill after Wilshire heading to Santa Monica.

Well, I'll obviously agree that age plays a gigantic factor when it comes to the demographic of the ride.
Luckily, I'm also cheerful of the fact that it has a decent, male:female ratio and that I myself have a noticed an even amount of behavioral-types spread out amongst the crowd.
As for why I've decidedly given up the ghost and accepted solo-status in the desert?
The cycling club up here is a sausage/hammerfest and if I'm going to go "over-the-bars" while distracted by the rare, desert hottie in the drop-top, I'd want her for myself!!!!
Oh, and most of the people who are on it have like, 5-6 kids and "fear God" more than I do.

Let's assemble teams for each Mob:
I volunteer for Safe Mob, which includes lecturing riding through the crowd to spot ppl who are not holding their line, and doing things out of order.
Wylie can help me with Safe Mob. We will wear costumes so that they know we are OG. Also I'm setting up a hall of shame, where I will post pictures of Crank Mob no no's. I will photograph hoolagins and make their failure public, especially if it endangered another's safety.
Example, the dude with grills who pops wheelies on his mountain bike and drops beers while riding in the mob. I also saw him stop downhill and turn sideways. He'll be the first!
Who's down for Cork Mob? There should be a corker assigned to every large intersection, and they should rotate and know their assignments.
Etc, you get the point. Be specific with tasks, assign them and they will be covered. Let's be responsible event planners with duties and assignements delegated and things will fall back into place the way we want 'em.

we have a responsibility to demonstrate how a proper MR ride is suppose to be conducted and enjoyed safely and responsibly.
Otherwise we, who promote the event, are responsible for the consequences that happens to the attendees. Example, accidents, theft, ...

Last thing we need is to require everyone to sign fucking releases.
It's bad enough when innocent, local cycling clubs require them, but if any of our rides start doing this, then I'm definitely taking up bull-riding.

I just don't see the need for them to require those due to the fact that beer-drinking and other forms of debauchery are not part of their itinerary.
And even when I rode over to one of their meets just to inquire about their group, they were pretty anal about it.

Sexy spoke cards to reward acts of C.R.A.N.K. nobility. Folks could be distributed throughout the Mob to take note of polite corkers, folks who call out dangers, etc, and at the stops reward them with a sweet spoke card. And I mean, it has to be a super sexy spoke card, ya know?
I've only ridden in the Mob like, twice, but it is dear to my heart. Would love to help out/be more involved.
Anyway, just a thought.

Last one I saw you at was the July MOB that parked itself on the beach at that GLOW festival.
Not naming names, but that was the only MOB that I didn't really agree with.
Felt more like a ten mile ride to a so-so event.

yeah i was at the anniversary one for an hour or two but we left before midnight. the one at the glow festival was great because people tried to fight me because they were shooting off fireworks. F.U.N.

Well, on the bright-side, it appears that I've been offered two jobs already!!!
#1 will be starting this weekend, #2 is kind of an iffy due to the fact that the employer is in Ventura and the post is here.
I basically have to wait for the paperwork and then call him once it gets here.
Although, I do like #1 since I was told it's going to be looking after a high-school all night.
