Lost Weight on a Bike?
Thread started by Roadblock at 05.19.08 - 1:07 pm

the thread regarding the large guy on a bike is amazing.

how many people in Ridazz land have lost weight and how much? I notice some ridazz that have lost a lot of weight and look trim, asses tight, thighs em-boldened, calves poppin....

3 years ago I went from eating red meat and chicken everyday to eating pescaterian (eat seafood) and now mostly vegetarian. that eating habit combined with bike riding I believe is why I lost about 20-25 pounds in about a year and a half.

Starting from a little over a year ago, within about 6-7 months lost 30 lbs. while at the same time gaining noticeable muscle mass.

About a year ago I dropped all sugar except for Handbones Oreos. Combine that with riding a few rides a week and commuting to work on a bike as well and I think I went from 220 to about 180 in like 6 months.

i dropped maybe 20 or 25 during the first six months of wolfpack. but quitting that and doing more party rides on the weekend and drinking more, ive probably put 15 back on.
gopez punched me in the side one night and said i was pudgy. he thought i was "cut".

Ok... Three years ago I weighed about 330 lbs... All I ate was... Well there was nothing I didn't eat. Nowadays I eat much better. No fast food (Ok... In-n-out, but is that really fast food?), I have slowed down on the taco trucks, and am now conscience of what I put into my body. Since moving out to LA and living the bike-o-lution, I have dropped to 240 lbs. Truthfully, I dont think I have been smaller since high school... argh...
Only if I could drop off another twenty, maybe I could then keep with WPH up those hills...

Before discovering midnight ridazz (bet you all didn't know you were undiscovered until I showed up, right?), I dropped 20-30 pounds and took almost 3 inches off my waist by riding everywhere. I changed almost nothing else, other than to eat a little more consciously. After I discovered MR, my mileage went down and my beer consumption went way the heck up. I put probably an inch back on my waist and added a little bit of weight, but it stabilized relatively quickly. I'm trying to get back to bike commuting 5 days per week and cut sugar out of my diet. I think if I do those things, I'll drop another 20-30 with relatively little effort. But I really like my sweets, dammit.

I also need to start showing up for wolfpack again. It's kind of a mixed bag for me. Wolfpack actually reduces my miles, since I don't commute mondays or tuesdays if I'm riding wolfpack, but I think it makes up for it in motivation on the other 5 days of the week. Now that I'm all fat and slow again, I don't know how I'm ever going to keep up - or maybe there are more slower riders showing up now that it isn't freezing cold every monday like it was in November, December, and January? I rode to work today, but maybe I'll take it easy on the way home and try to get out for the hustle tonight. There's no time like the present, eh?

In my quest to develop legs so large and powerful that they make "relaxed fit" look like skinny jeans (which is almost complete - there are now literally only a handful of places where I can find jeans that fit), I have done exactly the opposite. Bike riding + eating dead animals + beer = THUNDER THIGHS!

Next step is to turn it up to 11 and go from 203 to just over 220 pounds. The only problem is that I have a Brooks saddle with springs and they already creak when I ride. BIKE POWER!

When I started riding more a couple of years ago, I lost about ten pounds (and most of you know I'm pretty thin to begin with), but some of that weight has crept back on. I think the body acclimates to the amount and type of exercise it's getting and then there's the tendency for me to think, "Hey, I'm burning so many calories, I can eat whatever I want!"

I haven't lost weight, and some people still call me "a big girl" or "fat"( if they are of the cultural tradition where that is a compliment; means I look like I eat healthy portions, or have ample buttocks), but I have never been happier with my physical and mental condition. That said, I definitely see room for improvement, and I hope my little legs can get stronger, and the rest of me leaner. Hard on the cheap, and I don't like to use too much mental energy in diet control, but, can I get some help from the ladies on how to keep energy and protein levels up, meat consumption down? (I know about nuts, and fish, and iron, and fruit...but I am looking for maybe some sort of athlete's helper kind of supplementary item--goji berries? glucose tablets? whiskey gingers?

More power to everyone trying to be healthier--this thread is a great gentle shove in the direction of living/riding harder, like the champion maniac I dream of becoming!

@vspangle

While yes, i'm not a girl, but...

There's a plethora of information out there about dieting, loosing weight and the right/wrong ways to do it. But most often than not people are actually eating too much protein and not enough carbs to fuel your body. Most often unused protein turns into fat, while carbs (if gained from whole grains and fresh veggies) get burned off in your day-day exercise. If you're biking 5-10 miles a day, drinking enough water, and have a good balanced diet (whole grains, fish, veggies) your body should eventually find a healthy medium.

Honestly, there's no secret weapon, it's all about time on the bike, and what you're eating (not how much)... Time to cut the deep fried baby heads out of your diet... sorry...

A couple good books I've read about this whole thing are:

The Food Revolution by John Robbins (debunks diet myths)
Food for Fitness by Chris Carmichael (very training oriented)

I'm not a girl either, but I've been told that my butt would look good on one.

If you really want to get super amounts of protein, try the powder supplements. Either whey (milk-based) or soy is good. I have a whey shake + banana for breakfast. Then at work instead of working I surf the Internet (like right now) and eat soy protein with cottage cheese and/or yogurt (unflavored), both good sources of protein.

Eggs are good too, plus omelettes are always awesome.

Instead of pasta or grains, try quinoa. It's 15% protein and tastes way better than rice.

at crank mob the other night, i was thinking "god she has the perfect body"...and i'm not into girls or anything but i really do think you have an amazing body -size and proportion wise. your legs always look so perfectly toned. but if you feel like you need to get stronger, i'm sure you will since you're trying.

i will never have your body becuase i'm shaped like my mom - super wide hips/ass/thighs. i just have to get my body fat % down to feel a little more comfortable in my skin. i just like sweets too much. but i love that instead of going to bars on the weekend, i can go on bike rides (and drink too if i wish). sooo much better.

I've been riding for two years. I've gained 10lbs. 195->205
My legs look great but my stomach looks pregnant.
I don't eat junk food but I do eat fatty food.
Bread, cheese, beer. Mostly at night. No breakfast. The summo wrestler "diet". Eat and then immediately sleep.

I think the biggest problem is that I work from home sitting in front of a computer all day. Whenever I get a job that takes me out of the house even if I DRIVE I actually lose weight.

Since most of my life I was skinny I don't really see myself as fat. My self image has not caught up with my self memories. In any case, I don't see fat as ugly. I had 200lb girlfriends when I was 125lbs. More to love.

I think fitness is more important than weight. Are you fit to do a physical task without collapsing from exhaustion after x minutes?

The last few days I had to do a lot of work in the garden I have a HUGE garden. I also hired people to help me. Young people, older people. I couldn't keep up with them.Going up and down the hill felt like I was 1000lbs. What does this mean? I'm not fit. I think that's a problem.

Sometimes I think the only way to move more and get more exercise would be to move to a different more walkable city.

I lost about 15 pounds, down to my ideal weight of 165. I've gained muscle and tone and I feel healthier than ever. My diet has stayed exactly the same: I eat whatever I want.

Most of this was done with riding to work only once a week and adding a slow MR-style social ride about once a week. Anyone can do it.

Fitness trumps weight, for sure. We all have different body types, best thing is to do the best with what we've got. Me, I hate being short, if only because it can be hard to project confidence without someone thinking "Napoleanic complex." Plus it's harder to find bikes!

I've been riding to work (almost) everyday for 3 years, and I have gained 15+ pounds.

I eat whatever I want, usually burritos w/beer.

My average is about 70 miles a week on the fixed gear.

I don't think the bike is doing much for me anymore, except maintaining what I already have in terms of muscle mass.

I want to get a rowing machine to get buffer.

It's important to note that 'losing weight' really means losing fat. It's easy to lose weight, just stop eating altogether and your muscles will atrophy pretty fast.

In order to lose fat, the "secret" is burn more calories than you take in. Examining your diet is integral to achieving fitness. Starting a food log can help you figure out where you can easily (and painlessly) cut out a lot of extra empty calories. Often times you will also find out that you can easily substitute what you eat or drink rather than eating less overall. Eg.: Instead of a Coke, you can opt for a glass of water or tea; an apple or other piece of fresh (preferably organic fruit) instead of a candy bar or bag of chips. Or whatever your personal vice may be.

Also be sure to drink plenty of water, and get plenty of rest. And remember to start off slow and gradually alter your diet. Fad diets, and other harsh and abrupt lifestyle changes almost NEVER work.

Eating less animal products really helps too. Especially dairy, which honestly has less and less benefits than we originally thought. After I gave up dairy and went vegan, I quickly lost 5-7% (BMI) of extra fat that I was carrying around. Just something to think about...

From 2000-2004, I was taking medications that were most likely part of the cause for myself to jump to over 300 lbs.
However, in early '05, I essentially phased them out of my system with little withdrawal.
It was then that the weight slowly began to creep down on it's own.
That's when I decided to augment the effect and start walking/biking to work.
That started to speed things up, but I wasn't happy enough.
I cut down on soda-drinking and got into the gym as well.
That's where the weight really started to get thrown off and brought me down to the 180-190 I now maintain.
I also do a body-fat test every, other week and I tend to stay in the 12-15% range.

However, when I was truck-driving last year, I was maintaining 165-170lbs.
This I could probably attribute to less, white rice being doable while on the road.
That and an everyday diet of Wheat Bread/PB, and powdered-milk when a Jack, Del, Carls, Farmers, or In'N'Out weren't available at "food-time".

So, to sum it all up, it's safe to say that a little bit of everything brought my weight down.

I wouldn't say I lost much weight once I started riding a bike. I was already at a normal weight. But I did start to feel better for a longer part of the day. I had more energy. I felt calmer. The city's alright on a bike. I should be some of my family on a bike though. Some of them are starting to feel what I feel being on two wheels.

I gained weight, when I started riding - muscle ways a lot - and my thighs were getting more and more muscular. now that i have been off of my bike for nearly a month (broken collar bone), my legs are like toothpicks again, and I have lost a lot of weight.

I started riding about 4 years ago. Got hit by a car and stopped for about 2 years. Then I decided to kick my Ex out, filed for a divorce and started riding again. Lost 60 pounds in a year. And I wasn't even riding a lot just about 4 miles a day, not as much as I do now (16-20).

I inherited an SUV and drove that for a year, joined a gym and only lost 20 pounds, would yo yo a lot. gain 10, lose 5 and what not.

Decided to sell my piece of shit SUV and buy a better bike.

I've only lost 6 pounds since doing that. But I've gained a shitload of muscle.

I'm still big, people who didn't know me when I was 80 pounds heavier really don't believe me when I said I used to be REALLY big.

I don't feel awkward on my bike. I feel great actually. I look forward to losing the rest...
