ACTION ALERT: Expoline Bikeway Meeting!! Thurs. 2:30PM 500 Temple St.
04.2.09
Attention Cyclists: We have an important opportunity to demand that the Expo Bikeway is built!
WHAT: Expo Board of Directors meeting
WHEN: Thursday, April 2, 2:30pm
WHERE: Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration , 500 W. Temple Street, Third Floor, Board of Supervisors' Hearing Room 381 B
The Expo Board will vote on a design alternative for Phase 2 (Culver City to Santa Monica) and they must address outstanding bikeway issues. At this meeting, we need to get a commitment that they will build the bikeway.
Please attend this meeting and speak in support of the Expo Bikeway project!
You don't need a polished presentation; just let them know we need this and it needs to be done right. Here are some key points:
- The bikeway must be built with the Expo project. Since it was not included in the Draft-EIR, we need a commitment and a plan from Expo on how that will happen.
- Some intersections where Expo proposes the bikeway go have serious problems with road crossings: Venice & Robertson, Pico @ Gateway, Olympic @ Stewart. Expo needs to work with LA and Santa Monica to find safe and convenient solutions.
- Expo, Metro and the cities need to find funding for the bikeway so that it can be built at the same time as the rail line.
- If the Expo Bikeway is not built at the same time as the rail line, costs will increase dramatically and construction difficulties could be created
- The goal of the Expo project is to reduce auto use. The bikeway is a critical component because it can deliver transit users to stations without car trips and provides a much-needed crosstown commuter bikeway.
We need as many cyclists' voices as possible to ensure the building of the Expo Bikeway!

If anyone is interested I'm going to ride to this meeting today to speak during public comment. I hope everyone out is going to find their voice as well. Like the bulletin says it doesn't matter so much what you say in support of the bikeway, just that they know there are people out there who want this. This is important for Cycling in LA. We desperately need to fight for every inch of bicycle infrastructure here.
I'm riding today from Sunset and Vermont at 1:30 to this meeting. Join me.

Damn...
I'm only semi-jobless which means that when i have to work i have to work.
it is absolutely insane that we would even consider building 1 inch of light rail or urban freeway without adding bike infrastructure for a minute fraction of the total cost.
The orange line bikeway is a good precedent. Every transportation construction project (roads, freeways, and rail) should include bikeway spending from now until the universe implodes.

hey roadblock i'm gonna try to make it but i think i have a few things in my backpack that probably can't go through the security screening at the building. not sure what to do about that. i'd be skipping out of work a few minutes early so i don't have time to run home and drop the bag off either. ideas?

Are you mixing your bikes with politics again?

Yes sir. I'm mixing my bike with bike related politics and hopefully it will make a difference in making LA more bike-able.

Ingrid just did a great job speaking on behalf of the bikeway. I love how her comments just became repeating of the word bicycle.
Roadblock04.2.09 - 2:54 pm
reply
Ok... preparing my comments...... if I forget anything I'm just gonna repeat the word bicycle.

Dang, I wish I would have known about this yesterday. I might have been able to work this in my day today.
Oh well, fight a good fight! And when in doubt, spam the board!

Everybody needs to text or call Sexy right now. I'm power lobbying him to jump in on public comment since his comment card got rejected due to lateness. 323 574 0341 (I'm sitting next to him)
Another question..... why did the LACBC not organize a ride to this a week ago?? People could have planned for this. Only 5 reps for cyclists are hear and a couple have been rejected! (Due to lateness)

I know, my email notice came in last night after I was gone. Not good.
User104.2.09 - 3:55 pm

Yeah. Was it their only post on this? It was late last night when I got it. I could have planned for it.
Joe Borfo04.2.09 - 3:58 pm

Nope didn't get the notice till last night.
I was glad to hear the board speak highly of the bikeway.

congratulations ridazz for making your voice count. we got 5 ridazz to show up and 4 to speak. very short notice! next time one of these meetings happens lets try to catch it in enough time to get more people out.
note to anyone from LACBC. please post the meetings as soon as you can. I guess this one was announced last minute thus the short notice.

Didn't anticipate that I wouldn't be able to comment if I was a bit late--the Metro board is apparently more strict than the city council and the BAC. I still submitted a comment card in support of the bikeway measure.
FWIW, I just walked into the building and into the meeting without getting any kind of security beat-down. I must have an honest face.

First, I can't believe that even though they use the same room as the County Supervisers, my phone number didn't work. If it did, I would have posted it...sorry, but nothing lost.
They're usually not dicks about "signing in on time" but because of all the problems they've had with Damien Goodmon and friends they try to limit comments. It's bullshit and anti-Democratic and I hope someone called them on it in the public comment period.
Darrell Clarke (Friends 4 Expo and Sierra Club) said the cyclists represented well, and I've heard Ingrid and Roadblock before so I have no doubt. Good work everyone that went, sounds like you got their attention.
