Roadie Rage

My friend Sophia was riding her pink freewheel bike up Hyperion. She wanted to make a left turn on Rowena. Before changing lanes she looked back. 200 yds away she saw a Prius with a bike on the roof. She waved like friendly bike people wave to each other and she started changing laves. She stopped at the red light in the left lane. The Prius stopped behind her and the driver started yelling at her.
"YOU FUCKIN BITCH, YOU SHOULD LEARN HOW TO SIGNAL. AND YOU SHOULD WEAR A FUCKIN HELMET."
Sophia was shocked by the guy's reaction. She rode past the stopped cars in front of her to wait in front of them for the light. The guy got out of his car and walked right next to her and kept yelling:
"I JUST RODE 20 MILES UP ANGELES CREST. I'M A PROFESSIONAL CYCLIST. YOU FUCKIN BITCH YOU SHOULD LEARN HOW TO RIDE A BIKE BEFORE GOING OUT ON THE STREETS."
It went on like that till the light changed. Sophia moved on with a friendly female driver shielding her from the angry roadie.

Wow. That roadie has some serious skillz. Not only does he have a Prius he can ride 20 miles uphill both ways! Wait, couldn't he have also ridden his bike to Angeles crest? Some pro!

once again...
riding a bike does not automatically make you a nice person...
driving a Prius does not automatically make you a nice person...
being a roadie does not automatically make you a mean person...
being a professional certainly does not make you the authority on all types of riding...
and no, not all professionals wear helmets...
although signaling when you ride is probably good, especially on these streets of ours...

maybe not this instance, but there was a beach cruiser who was riding in the bike lane, i had enough room to pass on the left, and then she decides to get cute and starts swerving left to right in the bike lane about 10 feet ahead of me.
i cussed her out, but not any different from how i cuss out drivers.

There are definitely people who could keep up with you on an mtb, and regardless, even if they can't, why not let them try? Just let them know that you won't wait.

I understand your point. But the problem with such bikes is that they're slower. But that's a self-correcting problem: they get dropped!
Letting them get dropped will give them motivation to get faster, maybe to a buy a road bike. Telling them they can't ride with you just sucks.

I'm not really the type of person to drop a person. really. i usually end up at the back of the pack a lot of times just to make sure nobody is left behind. i feel fucked up for dropping someone, especially after i've taken them 50 miles into the middle of nowhere. this is as advertised, and intermediate level ride meaning you have some cycling experience. there are plenty of other shorter rides that i do not personally feel responsible for so not giving much of a fuck for. but even then i usually try to rally people up.
rayrayray was our first munchies metric century rider, and 2tern, you remember ray on the mountain bike. Yeah he did it, he was very tired, very unprepared.
that kind of shit worries me cause what if this kid straight up passed out because of dehydration. he's clearly not used to distance riding, how is he going to know when he's completely bonked?

My only complaint against the cycling collective up here is that it's exclusively geared towards roadies even though they claim it isn't on their boards and paper-flyers.
Thing is if we want to get more people on bicycles up in the desert, make it more appealing to the average Joe.
The Armstrong-wannabes can take their ass-kicking contests to some actual, challenging spots and meet up using their own cell numbers.
The way I see it, the first MR-ride consisted of "average-dressed", Joes who were tootling around and just happened to be noticed by similarly-average, bystanders.
It's all about making it user-friendly and socking it to them at a level they won't black out at.
Now, as far as having a road-bike, funds are tight and my next ride's going to be an Under-Seat Steering, 20"/26", SWB-recumbent.
If I'm going to ride solo, I could always say "fuck those guys" as I blow past them on fairing-equipped, comfort-eagle.
I guess if these local-yokels won't accept an MTB, then I'll just get even by making a cheap-laugh out of them!!!

That's why Mightnight Ridazz is the shit. When you get tired of the serious spandex riding and dealing with assholes, you can have fun on a casual ride. Don't let that fool get to you. No pro would brag about riding 20 miles up angeles crest.
Velocipede04.1.09 - 7:28 pm
reply
I'm sorry, but this is silly. The guy in the Prius is surely not a pro cyclist because no pro brags about a 20-miler up Angeles Crest. People who wear spandex ride on the same roads as everyone else here and have the same terrifying experiences with cars. Lance Armstrong rides on city roads just like everyone else here and in his 500-mile weeks he might have had a few brushes with bad drivers. Those who believe that the only "real riders" out there are the commuters on cruisers, hybrids and fixed gear bikes fail to realize that the pleasure they get from the simple act of riding a bicycle is shared by every one of those roided-out, spandex-clad carbon fiber wannabes. Honestly. anyone who chastises a rider for not wearing a helmet clearly has the safety of the cyclist in mind. As for the language and general attitude of the Prius driver, it's not justifiable. He was obviously an asshole. But please don't get so carried away with this us vs. them mentality and make such ludicrous generalizations. End of rant.

why would a cyclist have burly arms? whats the point? you dont pedal with your arms. at most you throw your bike left and right. are you going to tell this guy that he isnt exercising? of course you wouldnt.

No, I'm just saying most of these guys spend too much time focusing on one muscle group.
Hell, 40-100 pushups/day wouldn't hurt, but they don't seem to want to do that either.
What I'm getting at is if one of these guys wanted to shoulder-check me during a fly-by, then they'll be the one getting tossed around like a salad.
