Oh shit, I hope I can go to this.
If I do I'll be bringing my homemade Geiger counter!

For some reason I thought the title was going to be "Is That a Missle in Your Ass?"
Maybe it was the Bentstrider thing I read just before.

That was a Bicykillers route.
Al, you been peeking in our Play Book? Actually, we didn't end up doing it I think because of weather... or fear. Can't remember.

@neverclever, I'm not sure how late it'll go to yet. We'll definitely be out of the hills by night fall. Last place I wana be is around there with all those ghosts flying around! That's just crazy talk!
@BICYKILLER, Repost? Where was this posted up at? Link? I didn't even know you guys had a play book!

hmmmmm I haven't done it before and I don't plan on scouting it. KiMS1 and I believe GodLovesUgly has been up there. Maybe they would know. I'm not sure if I'm bringing my road bike or the MTB with road tires yet. Probly the MTB. If it gets too steep, we just walk it, no biggie.

ive always gone up desoto to the top and its pretty damn steep.
i srsly recommend walking it or using a geared bike.
also, its pot hole city
also, bring a lock bc you have to jump a fence to get inside the area and i dont think u wanna jump a fence with ur bikes.

I just attempted to ride up to the top of this route. I got about half way up and found a gate that said it was private road and no trespassing, etc. I saw the trucks full of hill billys going up with a bumper sticker that said (i shit you not) "IF You Don't Stand Behind Our Troops, Feel Free To Stand In Front Of Them!". So I decided to turn back. It looked like there residential properties up there and I didn't want to deal with any nonsense. I doubt it will be any issue when you all ride up.
Over all it is a pretty ride. It looks like the wildflowers are starting to bloom, so hopefully they will be in full bloom when you all ride up.
There is a couple of creeks running through the area which was really nice. There is a one lane bridge that is all gravel.
There is also a Buddhist temple on DeSoto about the 11600 address about 100 yards before Rinaldi on the left that might be interesting to stop and check out. I didn't stop I didn't want to break my stride. You might feel the same way and want to stop on the way back if you decide to check it out.

OH my, the plot thickens! That's all public roads up there. I've seen hillbillies do this before when I used to go hiking. It's only a public road when it needs repairs or maintenance.
Regardless, I'll have a good reason to wear a t shirt I've been wondering if I'll ever find a ride to wear it on.
New t............
Thanks for giving us the heads up sexy. We'll just say we're 100% Americans and we love our country, but hate the direction it's going. We think we need to see a stronger military. Everyone got that?

I wouldnt recommend fixxed... but hey, I've seen crazier things. I'm gonna be bringing my mountain bike most likely, or something with gears.

is this a road friendly ride or do i need a mtb
sancho105.7.09 - 10:04 pm

It's road friendly. If the roads get too steep or rough, we'll just walk the bikes. I'm taking my MTB cause it has lower gears than my road bike, and it has a rack.
Everyone needs to make sure they bring enough water. I'm bringing two bottles. The forecast for Sunday states a high of 85, so that sounds nice.
BTW, I just ran across a site that gives alot of info on the missile sites that were around LA.

Devonshire and DeSoto will be the last place to stop to buy water or whatever provision you will want. I think there is a new Trader Joe's right there.

oh wait... I just read the above posts about trespassing, etc. Maybe I shouldn't do this... considering I'll be reapplying for my work visa extension in a month, and need my record squeaky clean.
Also, I read you're all bringing mountain bikes. So yeah... I'll be up late at Pics Or It Didn't Happen tonight anyway, so I'll probably just sleep in.
Have fun dudes!

Done it. Rode it, walked it, and raced my mini bike to the top of it. There is a park about 1/3 of the way up and you can go there, the signs are there just to scare you off but you can be there for sure.

Sorry, I haven't got very far down the thread list.
The ride went went well. The turnout was small, only three ridazz total. I give mad props to Barry for even making it to the point where the route went under the 118. It was just Sonny and I at that point. We went passed the gate and on up the hill. We got to our intended spot and was not disappointed. I'll post up the rest after I post up my pics tonite.

suggestion.....
since only three people who wanted to do this ride made it out. And you must have a fair amount of spoke cards left.....why not do this again and call this last ride a scout ride?
I would have loved to have gone. I was planning on meeting up at Dev. and DeSoto, but as life would have it other things kept me at home.
What time did you leave NoHo? What time did you get to the 118?
How long did it take you to ride to the destination from the 118?
Sorry about the phone call, I spotted someone eating at a restaurant and thought it was this group.....

Ok well sorry for not getting back to anyone after my last post before the ride, but that was the last time I was online. I went to the shindig at the Oven then to B-rad's party. I missed the last train to LB, so I had to ride home to LB. Needless to say, this not the way you want to prep for a ride with climbing!
Anyways I got about 4-5 hrs of sleep then it was out the door. One hour train ride to the end of the red line, and the first person I recognize is Sonny. Little did I know this was going to be the only person I recognize! There was one other rida joining us, Barry from the valley. We leave the station about 9:35 and make good time getting through the valley. We arrive at Trader Joe's A little after 11. Have a lunch, refill our waters bottles and we're on the road a little before 12. We get to what I consider the trailhead at about 12. The trailhead is where Brown Canyon Road starts. Right at the start of this road it's a hiking it. Regardless what bike you have. That's pretty much the story for the rest of the "ride". There's a few spots here and there that you can ride it, but it's mostly a hike.
I was thinking of bailing and calling it quits, but I soldiered on for my buddy and myself. I told myself that I'm going think about turning back after we see what's up above this one hill.
We finally reach the destination, but it doesn't sink in that we're there. We just thought it was outpost before the missile silo. We don't realize we're at our destination until we're on the basketball court and see the burned out bus! This is the only basketball court I know of that has a million dollar view btw. So Sonny and I go back to where the burned out bus is and do a bit more exploring.
We find that all the hatches are welded shut and some platform as been built to keep nosy people out. We're not disappointed though cause it was a serious workout to get to this point. We saw some cool stuff, and I think Sonny saw some cows for the first time! LOL
To answer some questions. I think the gate you came to RB is
this one. You can barely see it 15-20 ft from the car parked on the road. That bus has not been there very long. I went inside it and found schedules that were dated 2008. Finally even though this wasn't very well attended, I'm not interested in doing this one over. I am interested in going further up the trailhead though. We left some of the area unexplored, so we do have a reason to go back. But I'm not about to ride 38 miles through suburbia again! That was fucking torture! Even taking a bike would be somewhat pointless. The roads are too steep. Riding down on a fixie would have been suicidal. Watching a fixie downhill race would be tits though! I'd definitely go up there for that! Just to clarify, that's with no brakes gentlemen. :-)
