great ride. reminded me of ride arc with the speeches at the stops. i love the history and knowledge and first hand accounts and whatever else you want to call it that some of our riders have had with the early punk/hardcore scene.
i also hope that big bike dan is ok after his crash and that his hand isnt broken.

I didn't get a chance to read the booklet until yesterday, Saturday. Rollers did an great job putting this thing together. Thanks Rollers, your work is much appreciated.
BTW, if there's an extra booklet, or a pdf of it, I would like to get a copy. I gave mine to someone that didn't go on the ride, but wanted to read it. Also if there's a CD of the music floating around, I would love to get one if possible.
Thanks

Anyone knows if there's a story on this pic here? I'm curious if the high flying thrasher was ever identified and interviewed? Did he crash to the ground and fucked himself up? Enquiring minds would like to know.

They tell you all about it in American Hardcore. Which you can watch the whole documentery on youtube.

Allan dude....a somersault? come on man...it's a stage dive!
I read somewhere recently about him ...i'll try to track it down again.

Oh brother!
Here's a stage dive............
Here's a Somersault, which btw is an acrobatic stunt in which the body rolls forward or backward in a complete revolution with the knees bent and the feet coming over the head.
How to Perform a Somersault
Can one do a stage dive into a somersault? Yes!
Can one do a somersault off a stage? Yes!
Is the original pic on this post a guy doing a somersault? Yes!
Dude, check out my profile, Dave's got me backed up on this.

from wikipedia's L.A.'s wasted youth page:
On the Back of their 1st Album (Reagan's In) there is a individual doing a back flip off the stage into the crowd, this person is Chuck Burke who grew up in Hawthorne as well and attended Hawthorne High School and was a excellent skateboarder.

Keeping it in context as a punk rock show, it's a stage dive as he's diving off the stage.

"So the consensus here is that the dude flying through the air is not doing a somersault?"
Well, I'm going to side with you here a little.
Literally he's doing a somersault in the air. People who have their knees not as bent are literally stage diving. However, both of those are stage diving, like Brad said.

See, It's like this: In Olympic diving there are all these different kinds of dives that have different names, but they're still all known as dives, right?
From Wikipedia:
"Dive groups
A male diver performs a reverse from a 1 meter springboard in the tuck position
There are six "groups" into which dives are classified: Forward, Back, Inward, Reverse, Twist, and Armstand. The latter applies only to Platform competitions, whereas the other five apply to both Springboard and Platform.
* In the Forward Group (Group 1), the diver takes off facing forward and rotates forward
* In the Back Group (2), the diver takes off with their back to the water and rotates backward
* In the Reverse Group (3), the diver takes off facing forward and rotates backward
* In the Inward Group (4), the diver takes off with their back to the water and rotates forward
* Any dive incorporating an axial twisting movement is in the Twist group (5).
* Any dive commencing from a handstand is in the Armstand group (6).(only on platform)
Dive positions
During the flight of the dive, one of the four positions may be specified:
* Straight - with no bend at the knees or hips
* Pike - with knees straight but a tight bend at the hips
* Tuck - body folded up in a tight ball, hands holding the shins and toes pointed.
* Free - Some sequence of the above positions.
These positions are referred to by the letters A, B,C and D respectively."

Just remember, when crowd surfing, if they send you toward the open part of the mosh pit, you're going to get a face full of concrete!
Oh and people love it if you crowd surf when you weigh 300lbs and are fat and sweaty!

I remember vividly being at xposur 54 and Jimmy Thrill of Rattlesnake Shake ran from the drum riser and jumped in the crowd...except the crowd parted and fell right in the middle of all of us.

I saw this dude stage dive once where he dove too far and caught the back of the group. He barley snagged a shoulder as he was flying through the air. It spun him enuff to land flat on his back from about 8 feet in the air. He somehow poped right back up and continued.
OK for clarification since there still seems to be confusion about what each is representing.......
stage dive...
stage dive into a somersault.....
That concludes our punk rock lesson for today. Tomorrow, did punks get more street cred if the snuck into the show, or if they were on the guest list?
Till then, rock on all you mofo!

barleye03.23.09 - 4:42 pm

its all cyclical. if youre on the list, you get in free. if youre sneaking in, youre getting in free. punks get in free. therefore, punks have the most street cred.

if youre diving off the stage, then its a stage dive, regardless of how your body contorts in midair.
if youre at 924 gilman street in sf, you arent allowed to stagedive.
