Anyone have any good recommendations for a good over-sized bicycle backpack. I've seen a few riders with big boxy collapsible bags, do you know who makes them. Would it be better to install some mounts to carry bags on the back wheel? I would mainly use it for grocery/etc. shopping (so I make less trips), and possible for touring later.

if its for groceries, i think itd be best bet with panniers.

Cool thanks. A pannier setup might be best, I could put it on my other bike and leave it on.

I have Jandd bags that I like just fine. Different model that the one in that link. Mine are a pair of bags that are not connected so I can leave one behind if I don't need it. Thought about adding a shoulder strap so I can carry it easier when I lock up. I think they make a version with backpack straps just for that reason. They are also nice for hauling beer around and having a cold drink while everyone else is standing in line at 7-11.

Ortlieb panniers aint cheap, but they kick ass and have great shoulder strap/backpack harness mounting options.
I'm all about my rack n pannier setup...i ditched my messenger bag a few months ago and couldn't be happier.
Just finally got my Long Haul Trucker and Ortlieb setup in today, so now i can carry about a 100 lbs if i really want...obviously not necessary, but it makes the week's groceries seem like no load at all.

Can you lock your panniers onto your bike?
With all the bike / bike part jacking going on lately, I'd be worried about my panniers wandering off.

TransIt Metro Pannier would be ideal but it doesn't carry that much and the reviews aren't the best.
I bought the
TransIt Large Waterproof Panniers and this stuff can carry a lot! I did have one of the buckles break but Performance is pretty good at returns. No shoulder straps.
The Ortlieb bags are pretty pricey but are sooo worth it. The mounting system is fool proof and solid!
I also have the
Topeak MTX Trunk Bag DX with the topeak rack which holds the bag really securely. I also liked this set up but went w/ the transit bags so I could use the one sided pannier to use w my music system on my rack.
The topeak one has a shoulder strap which is cool. I was able to fit 1 2qt orange juice and gallon of milk in the trunk section... and the panniers held vegetables and stuff. The pannier side of the bags aren't big. Basically imagine you can fit a pair of shoes on each side w/ some room to spare. I think sportschalet has the topeak bags if you wanna see them. But if you went w/ the topeak... you gotta buy their specific rack to go w/ the bag special slide on system thing.
I recently bought a messenger bag just to have one for short trips when I don't feel like hauling a pannier. Like Lance said... rack and panniers is just the way to go! No sweaty back.... no stress on shoulder. But I do like the messenger bag cause you can just lock up and go and have your both hands free when you walk around.
But then you say... if the topeak bag has a shoulder strap... then why not stick w/ that one? Well... again it's just not big. The topeak is like 1630 cubic inches while my messenger bag is 2500 cu. But you can't go wrong w/ the topeak but bigger is better i say. Just go around check them out.
I went to REI and their Novara bags have a similar system as the ortleibs but still is on the pricey side.
