Hitchens vs. D'Souza? I almost want them both to win, because they're both so despicable that it would be gratifying to watch either one lose.

That debate sounds like a diarrea tornado. I'm there!
Atheism and religion are the worst. Cynicism and cluelessness is how I roll.

“all religious belief is sinister and infantile.” -- Hitchens.
That's kind of a shitty thing to say.

Yeah, the position of a New Atheist is quite harsh and unforgiving...but it rings of the truth.

Religions is so..........so medieval. We should be passed that and see who it was produced by. Produced by man, for man, to control man. Every book, every belief was mans' creation.

So, what's the beef with Hitchens?
Hitchens is a bloodthirsty, warmongering crypto-neocon chickenhawk asswipe. As George Galloway (no intellectual giant himself) has accurately pointed out, Hitchens, who once had a certain amount of credibility, has squandered most of it since 9/11 and has been reduced to carrying water for the Bush administration and its failed war in Iraq.
I've seen him debating the Iraq war at the Times Book Festival as well as on C-SPAN, and found his debating style to be alternately bullying and self-pitying.
Also, smug, complacent atheism is at least as annoying as smug, complacent "faith."
Plus, dude can't ride a bike for shit.

I don't know about all this war and water boy stuff, I don't really care how smug a person gets, but when they don't ride a bike in worthy way. I say burn em at the stake.

@ PC: You've got to be kidding me. How can one be a former Trotsykist and a Neo-Con at the same time? Hitchens is far from bloodthirtsy and warmongering. While his position on the War are completely different from mine, to say that he carrys water for the Bush administration is laughable. While one may not be a supporter for the war...which I am not, you cannot argue with the fact that Hussein was a bad person.
While other journalists were scouring Lexis Nexis, Hitchens was one of the only serious journalists who traveled to North Korea, Pakistan and Iran....to report.
And I don't have to mention my liking of his positions on religion and Atheism.

PC-

Me-
This seems to paint the two in black and white. And we all have seen the problems when doing so from our world leader! The two are not even equal in any way I can see. I have an idea what a complacent faith based person is, not sure what a complacent atheist is, unless you are referring to Hitchens. But Hitchens doesn't represent even remotely the atheists, even though his book is referenced on Wiki under Atheism.
Most atheist I know leave the option that there maybe a god revealed sometime into our future. This includes the possibility that our planet was seeded by "god(s)". They also leave the personal freedom of a person making their own conclusions and live life as they believe. Hard to find such freedom in the religious community!
So yeah I agree with half your assertion PC.

You've got to be kidding
me. Are you not aware of the left-wing backgrounds of many of the prominent neoconservative thinkers? One of the things that distinguishes neoconservatism from standard conservatism is the utopian idealism that the original neocons brought over from their days in the Sixties left.
Hitchens is far from bloodthirtsy and warmongering. While his position on the War are completely different from mine, to say that he carrys water for the Bush administration is laughable.
I'm not laughing. During both of the debates on the Iraq war that I personally witnessed at Royce Hall, Hitchens made wild claims about discoveries of WMDs that were going to be announced any minute now, and which would surely justify the invasion. They never materialized, of course. It was also fun to watch him defend his personal friend (his words, not mine) Ahmad Chalabi shortly before Chalabi was discredited to the point that even his handlers in the Bush Administration had to abandon him. Later, during the Galloway-Hitchens debates, he stooped to the level of defending the Bush Administration's handling of Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath in New Orleans.
While one may not be a supporter for the war...which I am not, you cannot argue with the fact that Hussein was a bad person.
You know who else was a bad person? Hitler. What a dick. Seriously.

I guess you hang with a better class of atheists. Most of the ones I know are convinced--convinced!--that there is no god, and they're just as impervious to opposing argument as the most closed-minded Christian.
