I did two or three laps... I dont remember well... I know I did one less than the people who did all the laps...I thought it was late, and to my disappointment it was barely a little after 8am.
Lance ended up signing some autographs, but it was kind of bummer because everyone swamped him. He jumped in his SUV... the crowd got silent, we cried a little, gave each other hugs... and then I called work to let them know Id be late.
THAT WAS FUN... especially passing a bunch of fat roadies on $2000 bikes.
I can say that I passed up Lance Armstrong on a ride (but dont read too much into it).
What up to Roadblock, Borfo, Dak, Dingo and others... cool chilling...

I will always remember the looks on the all the wheezing spandies when I thrashed by them up the hill in my cut-off shirt and jean shorts, blasting Justice from my speakerpack. There's a certain level of delicious joy that I got from that.

yeah... I have to admit, I take pleasure in passing a bunch of muscly men on expensive road bikes.

Did you, or anyone else get good photos?
I was right next to him about 3/4 into the first lap (turns out MR picked a bad spot to camp out in the lot)... I saw everyone cut through the lot (cheaters)...
I caught up to Lance and the front group about 3/4 into the first lap... but it got really tight riding there, so trying to take a pic would have been dangerous.
Once he hit the lot at the end... there were all these funny people "running" next to him as he cruised up to his SUV.. I have a photo of some Asian dude in sandals running next to Lance, totally blocking Lance int the shot... i was like "what the fuck?"-- thats not fair, you didnt even ride.

Could anyone who attended guess the percentage of people who drove there to ride? I love that Lance specifically said 'Get out of your cars LA,' but doubt many took it to mean leave the damn things at home.
On a normal day in Griffith Park I'd guess that 50% or more of the people I see riding drove there...which is embarrassing, but exemplary of the problem here in LA.

I was at this ride too. I'm not even a huge fan of his but it just seemed like it would be awesome and as a result now I can imagine when I'm old in about 50 years sitting around telling my grandkids "i went riding with Lance Armstrong once"
I started way too far back even behind most Midnight ridazzzzzz so on the first loop around I was no where near Lance and in fact i hadnt even seen him so when i got back to the start I camped out with a bunch of other riders and waited for the pack to reemerge where I blended in near the front, I managed to to move up the pack a bit to where I was on the far left right near the front and then we hit the big hill and I couldn't hang anymore since I'm as much in biking shape this summer as I was.
But it was still sweet as fucc and myself on my 300 dollar fixie in my baggy I bike LA t shirt flapping in the wind managed to hang in there with at least half of the "racers" a little too much spandex for my tastes but I'm a pacifist so it's ok.

Lance is built to conquer grand tours, he's skinny and ripped. Most of the best stage racers are like 140-150 pounds. You gotta be that light because you gain most time on the mountain stages.
I would have loved it even more if Lance did a commuting ride instead of doing laps in Griffith Park, but I don't think it's productive to rip on people for doing purely recreational riding or wearing comfortable clothing or even for driving to the ride.
I got up too late and missed the ride but got to see many Ridazz on my way there and while looking for Lance. I wasn't aware they were just doing loops so another rider and I went out to Frogtown before someone told us they were still at the park! It was nice to get a ride on before going to work nonetheless.

fyi, just because someone is wearing spandex, doesn't mean they are fast or even trying to be fast. sometimes it means someone is just trying to remain comfortable and stay cool. sorry if that makes you uncomfortable but keep that in mind next time you pat yourself on the back for passing someone clad in synthetics.

fyi, just because people make fun of spandex doesnt mean spandex itself needs to be defended nor the act of wearing it.
however... i doubt, highly doubt, those targeted by the spandex jokes, were wearing spandex to "remain" comfortable (as if they were comfortable before, and only spandex would keep them comfortable) nor to stay cool (as in temperature).
Come on... why pretend like you dont know what others are talking about...

cabhauler, sorry you missed it's fun to see you on rides.
I agree with what you say. I found on long rides, I like the padding in my spandex, it really helps so I can't quite figure out what the problem is.
Same with my having to drive to the ride. I can't figure out why I have to be negatively judged because I happen to live far away. WTF, at least I went to the ride and gave it my best. Instead of driving would it have been better to lie on my couch and watch TV instead? Give me a break. The woman next to me in the parking lot told me she hadn't been riding in three years and this gave her an excuse to give it a try. She followed it up by telling me she wants to do it again and now that she got her bike out, it's time to do more riding.
Added to all that, I don't much give a shit how anyone feels about Lance or why that even matters. At least he was able to tweet out a message and pull a lot of riders out on an early weekday morning on really short notice.
When I hit that hill on the first lap, I dropped way back. When I got back to the start, I saw a lot of people hanging around but it didn't look like the ride was over so I went on. Just as I got to the top of the hill on lap 2, I looked to my side and saw Lance surrounded by a lot of riders and followed them downhill. I brought the wrong bike, it had a mountain cassette and the most I could squeeze out of that combination was 33mph, those bastards were really moving.

I love my hipster bretheren..we're all just people who love bikes in the end. You can giggle at my obsession with matching my bike, kits, helmet and sunglasses...it is pretty pathetic!

The spandex versus hipster thing always seems to boil down to an either or debate, but I think quite a few roadies ride casual dressed for some rides, but prefer comfort of spandex on most rides. I've basically turned into a roadie, I wear spandex for what I consider training rides, but if I am commuting or casual social riding I dress more casually, although sometimes still with bike shorts underneath depending on how long I expect to be out and how much sweat will be involved. When you spend a lot of the time in the saddle, the bike shorts really are a god send and help prevent saddle sores and chaffing. As far as I am concerned everyone on a bike is a good thing, no matter the type of bike, the way they dress, and yes even if they drove there, but I do think people ought to ride to rides when feasible. Ironically the few times I am in a car anymore is car pooling to bike races where riding to the race is a lot more than a warm up.
About the people feeling good about passing people who aren't racing you, maybe you should sign up for a cat 5 race and see what it's like to race people who are trying. You would also be surprised sometimes just how fast some fat dudes in spandex can be in the flat land races like crits. And if you don't feel like racing in spandex, I did see a guy in jeans and a skater helmet and t-shirt at dana point race. He got points for style, but he dropped off the back.

"But there's a lot less of that now.. And I believe I am correct in saying that wolfpack is faster now than it was before, yes?...and in a way, more serious than it was before? Just as there's more spandex as there was before?"
If the argument is:
1. Wolfpack riders are faster and in a way more serious than before
2. Wolfpack has more riders wearing spandex than before
Concl: There must be a relationship between the increase in spandex, and wolfpack becoming faster and more serious.
I dont think this is an argument, as much as its a question of "what is the relationship (if there is one),
The conclsuion that does not follow is:
Therefore, the increase in spandex "causes" or is a reason for WP becoming faster or more serious.
or
Therefore, the increase of speed and seriousness, is the "cause" or reason for more spandex.
whats missing:
The causal connection (does causation exist though?)... you need at least another premise, such as:
1. Wolfpack riders are faster and in a way more serious than before
2. Wolfpack has more riders wearing spandex than before
3. If more riders wear spandex, they will become faster and more serious
The problem, is that (3) is where this whole argument started...
Wearing spandex doesnt mean shit -- it means you found spandex in a size that fits you (or you think fits you). Some wear spandex and sit in a parking lot, others wear it and ride great. others wear it and walk around malls buying burgers and soda.

my point is that it can be causal (i.e. the reason a rider is fastER).
it can be correlative (i.e. some riders progress toward spandex)
but neither is necessarily true.
parking lot guys show that you can be neither serious nor fast but wear spandex.
Wolfpack may be faster and more serious, but to simply say its correlative may not be the case either.
It could be everyone in Wolfpack had there wardrobe burned except spandex, thus having nothing to do with seriousness or speed.

While it is hardly my place to make this criticism, it would seem that you are all looking at things too rigidly (so to speak). The question is not one of correlation v. causation but rather one of dynamic equilibrium based on underlying structural relationships.
I would urge you to consider the
structural model of speedy cycling, in which "spandex" plays the role of the ego, acting as a mediator between the demands of the super-ego (i.e. "seriousness") and those of the id (i.e. "your junk"). "Spandex" employs certain defense mechanisms that allow you to cope with the insecurities produced by "seriousness" and also shields the external world (with varying degrees of success) from the often inappropriate impulses of "your junk." At the same time, "spandex" allows one to express the socially-responsible demands of "seriousness" while protecting "your junk" from the ill effects that could result from direct interactions with the external world.
It's all quite simple, you see. You have been talking too much about "spandex" and "seriousness" when you should be talking about "your junk."
