You're all morons.

The problem with pandemic illnesses is that you don't *know* it's a pandemic disease until it's too late.

Bird Flu kills 60% of the people it infects. That's fucking scary.

The reason it isn't a pandemic, so far, is that it hasn't been able to transfer human-to-human. But that's not a hard leap for it to make.

The rest of the world took that seriously and spent a LOT of money vaccinating chickens, killing entire farms of chickens, and quarantines. China doesn't exactly have the best reputation for human health and safety, yet they went all-out to stop it from spreading.

Keep in mind that every single one of you have grown up in a world that have vaccines against all the most deadly viruses, except for AIDS. You're spoiled by modern medicine. (And as far as AIDS in the U.S. is concerned, it's totally preventable, so suck it.)

raising animals in inhumanely dense conditions to maximize profits allows diseases like this to incubate and spread rapidly and then eventually to the human population. If people reduced their meat consumption and demanded humane farming conditions these kinds of diseases wouldnt spread nearly as fast or frequently.

Mind control, among other things.

The flu goes around every year, and while this one seems a little more serious - let's not allow this to be the cause of a serious and long-term assault on liberty.

35,000 people a year die of the flu in the US.

Mexico City is forcing quarantines and who knows what other crazy shit.

It will take some time before you get the connection. By then it will be either forgotten about or taken way too extreme.

I actually hope I am a moron right now.

i think flu is a misnomer here, and a huge percentage of that 35,000 are aids patients or elderly.

Seriously I get what you're saying but take off the tin foil hat its not like this is a huge plan to make us all live in a 1984 society

I guess all I'm saying is it's an opportune time to scare everyone to giving up their rights and opening the door to the public accepting forced mandatory vaccination programs which will make huge profits for pharmaceutical companies.

I'm reading this CDC release on Avian Influenza. This paper is all over the place with contradictory statements.

From everything I've read about this swine flu, it doesn't seem like it is doing much harm then a regular flu would do. I don't really see how this is a threat that calls upon a national emergency. Yesterdays paper said 20 deaths in Mexico with 3 where dingo is at in SLP. Today it said 80 in Mexico.
So 60 people died in a day in Mexico over this????? It doesn't say that any where. I would think that would be news.

Meanwhile 39,800 car deaths a year in the USA dived by 365 =
OOOpppss 109 died in cars today. SORRY. Better go get a flu shot.

But seriously I'm reading here that the CDC say there is 36,000 flu deaths a year in the United States. 36,000/365= 98 per deaths per day.

Read this science daily report says that is not a accurate figure but a generated figure based on flu associated deaths?

I think this might all be a push to get people to get vaccines?????
More profits for the pharm companies.

You can't sue a vaccine manufacture for illness or death that is caused by a vaccine thanks to our congress

but you can file a claim with the federal govt and all of us can pay for the injury up to (I think) $75,000 if your loved one is killed.

"freedom vs. security"

a false dichotomy is a false dichotomy.

one of the other options once again is to enforce safe and humane livestock guidelines and enforce them vigilantly. If we invested money into informing people that eating too much meat is the cause of this problem rather than handing out welfare checks to pharmaceuticals we could cure the disease rather than the symptom.

there are quite a few vaccines that are pushed on the public that don't actually benefit the public. this may well be one of them.

Its true the conditions under which animals are living are not good and its a shame that we have gotten past the point where we can prevent the rapid evolution of diseases that take place.,

That's 80 dead out of 1200 infected in Mexico. That's a nearly 7% death rate, which is apparently utterly within norms according to the CDC's own data.

I found this in the CDC flu summary for 2008:

Forget that chart. That's not a mortality of flu. It's the percentage of all deaths in the US due to pneumonia and influenza. Since not everyone who dies even has pneumonia or influenza, the normal mortality rates of those have to be significantly higher, I'd think. I guess it all comes down to how much is attributable to flu and how much is pneumonia unrelated to flu. I'm done researching, anyway.

Not having to be liable for a product that is perceived as being compulsory keeps cost down, especially when you put the liabilities on the government (aka People) to where you could never be shut down for peddling poisons. This keep the company in business and makes more profits.

Especially when retarded farmers feed their livestock anti biotics everyday, giving diseases a chance to evolve against them
The farmers have better production that way, therefore they make more money?

She took a vaccine for a goat flu and guess what it did, it paralyzed her! she couldn't use her hands! and she wanted the makers of the vaccine to pay!! can you believe the NERVE?!
yeaahhh, how dare she try to take away from that bottom lines. So she can't use her hands, there is billions of us left that can. Best part she is supposedly not going to get the disease she was poisoned with.

I feel like sometimes this place is like a loose change fan site or something

OH my godness, how dare people open their mind to a documentary that questions things that don't make sense to them.
Things could never be different then what the government tells it is. The Bush administration, our military and the USA intelligence community could never do something that is manipulative and not in the best interest of most people. It was those Muslins damm it. If you haven't learned anything, learn this...its the darker skin people, they are always the cause of all the problems.

NOW STOP THINKING AND JUST LISTEN TO WHAT WE ARE TELLING YOU. WE ARE BIG BUSINESS, WE ARE THE GOVERNMENT WE KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON AND WHAT WE SAY IS TRUTH.
(no Virginia a marriage of business and government is not facsim. It is called a plutocracy, thats when the rich control the government and take more and more of the commonwealth and make themselves richer. Whats the difference?, it just words. Now go back and work harder for less money.

though I only started questioning the MSM since they obsessed over a blow job, the MSM backed Bush's thievery of the presidency and the lack of foreign policy coverage... now that the internet is here at least you can fact check and also read about stories that never get coverage in the MSM in the foreign press.

Just because someone stands to profit from it, doesn't mean it's not real. Remember the victim fund scams after 9/11?

pretti*ugli - What, exactly, is the difference between a drug and an herb? Do you really think that Whole Foods has no profit-motive to tell you that you should be taking echinacea every day? And if your immune system is so great, then you're a dead man. Read on to see why.

ideasculptor - Good research, but your chart is totally misleading. It's showing flu *and* pneumonia deaths. Most of those are deaths of the elderly. Many a grandmother has gone on to the Here-After because of pneumonia. That doesn't make it a pandemic.

The thing that is NOT being reported by the right/left/moron-controlled media is that what really scares the CDC about swine flu is *who* it's killing. It's killing the young and healthy at exceptionally high rates. 10% doesn't sound high; but if you compare that to the 1918 pandemic, which killed as many people as the Black Plague, it's about the same. And it killed the same kind of people; young and healthy. And if you're thinking, "well ,it's only up to 2000 cases in Mexico, that's not high." Consider this. How many Mexicans can't afford to go to a hospital that's advanced enough to properly identify and report it?

I'm going to assume that you're all 20-30-somethings who are in excellent health because you bike every day. Given that, *YOU* are more likely to die of Swine Flu than either your parents, or your little kid brother who's still in Jr. High. Both Swine flu, and the 1918 flu kill you by turning your own immune system against you. Those with the strongest systems fall the hardest. Just look at the data from 1918. Find your age, and then find your parents:

In the County Hospital ER waiting area* on Saturday night/Sunday morning, the TV was running Swine Flu, Swine Flu, Swine Flu news every 15 minutes. Oh, it was a great time. The attitude in the crowd during the swine flu segments seemed to fall somewhere between resignation and annoyance. Of course, that was kind of the general attitude to begin with, but man, what timing...

If you're interested in the dorky intricacies of pandemic flu, you might also like to know that the National Academies Press is offering Microbial Threats to Health: The Threat of Pandemic Influenza as a free download right now. This is a 2005 book, so it's not going to cover anything about this current variant of swine flu, but it should still be an interesting overview of the background science.

Also from boingboing -

"Why It's Called "Swine Flu"
By now, you've probably heard about the fact that this particular strain is basically a genetic tossed salad of pig, bird and human flu virus. So why is the pig part getting all the "glory"? According to Andrew Pekosz, over at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, it's because the two genes most important to determining whether humans are immune and what level of protection they have (that'd be the "H" and the "N" in H1N1, by the way) happen to be ones that came from porcine flu strains. We call this chimera "Swine Flu" because that's where it got the genes that really matter most to our health.
On a related note, the AP is reporting that an Israeli Deputy Health Minister is vehemently opposed to the name, because he finds the pig reference religiously offensive. Yeah,I dunno, either.

Swine Flu Was Genetically Manipulated to Target Conspiracy Theorists
It's true: If you own a tin hat, you're ten times more likely to contract the virus. Seriously, though, could the Internets please stop forwarding those increasingly out-of-context videos of Dallas County medical director John Carlo? In some recent interviews, Carlo referred somewhat clunkily to culturing samples of H1N1 in the laboratory. This quote is now being used as "evidence" in a delightful meme claiming that H1N1 is a man-made virus, wholly created in the laboratory. As Carlo himself has pointed out, that is not remotely the case. In reality, those video quotes are actually Carlo referring to the common practice of taking samples of a virus and growing it in the lab until you get enough of the virus that you can analyze the thing. That's how researchers learn what makes a specific virus unique and how they figure out ways to combat it. Scientists studying cultured samples of a naturally-occurring virus =/= evil plot to create a man-made super-virus. Please, tell your friends.

How Nature Makes a Chimeric Virus
As frustrating as that whole Carlo debacle is to me, I can understand where some of the confusion is coming from. Everywhere, you're reading that H1N1 swine flu contains genes from human, avian and swine flu viruses and, for most people, the imagination immediately jumps to genetic engineering. But, let me assure you, nature can do this perfectly well on its own. No human tampering required.
It works like this. Flu viruses have eight genes, each of which is on a separate piece of RNA and, each of which replicates independently of the others. Multiple types of flu virus can infect the same cell. If a cell is infected with two or three different viruses, genes from the "parent" generation can easily get shuffled around and randomly repackaged into chimeric "offspring". For a visual, think about taking two shakers of dice, tossing the dice out on the table, swirling them around and splitting them back up again into the shakers. Chances are, some of the dice that were originally in shaker 1 are now in shaker 2, and vice versa. And that's basically a simplified version of what's going on with flu virus genes when they create something like H1N1.

Some Thoughts on Factory Farming
So I know that Grist, and a couple of other places, are promoting the theory that the genesis of H1N1 swine flu can be tied directly to factory farming practices. I'm no fan of factory farming, and it definitely has some associated public health dangers, but I'm not yet convinced that this one of them.
First, according to the experts I've spoken to, nobody currently knows specifically where H1N1 swine flu comes from. In fact, the information we're getting out of Mexico seems to have a lot of holes in it, to the point that (as of my writing this) nobody even knows how many supposed swine flu cases/deaths are actually caused by swine flu or what percentage of people infected with swine flu are dying in that country. As Pekosz told me, there's no evidence one way or the other.
Second, while past pandemic viruses have had connections to farming, they haven't necessarily been connections to factory farming; but rather small-scale (and, particularly, subsistence level) farming, where animals of several species share close quarters. This is important for the H1N1 swine flu. Pigs seem to provide a particularly good environment for flu viruses to get their gene-reassorting watusi on. But to get that pig/avian/human mix, the most likely candidate would be a pig who'd had close contact with both people and poultry. As I understand it, it's less likely that a human who works with pigs and chickens separately could pass the avian virus to a pig. And, factory farms, which tend to be single-species outfits, aren't really great places for pigs and chickens to interact.
Now, I can see some ways around that. Say, if the pigs were sleeping or wallowing in muck that was contaminated with chicken feces or something. I could also be interpreting the facts incorrectly here. But from what I've read, and from the researchers I've spoken with, it seems more likely that H1N1 would have been created in the communal barn of a small farm, than in a giant hog-only factory farm shed.

I'm going to be enthralled with the swine flu story for weeks, I'd imagine. So if you've got questions about it, or rumors you'd like to hear the facts behind, I'm more than happy to put my nose to the research wheel on them. Best thing is to email, though."
