Those guys on unicycles are crazy. They have decent balance to be doing that in the woods even with dirt trail terrain!
I still am watching that Break the Cycle vid. I'm not normally into mtb, but I love shots in Ireland, and those riders look like their having alot of fun!
It saddens me that popular mountain biking culture seems to have completely abandoned any thought of stewardship of the land or sharing trails with other trail users. It's all about skidding through switchbacks at top speed, riding with no regard for the shape of the terrain or existing trails, and hauling ass down trails despite the existence of other trail users. True cross country riding seems to have been replaced by shuttle-driven freeride and downhill mountain biking, too.
To me, all the appeal of mountain biking is in spending a day in the woods with friends, packing a picnic, and enjoying the day, not just shredding to the bottom of a hill as rapidly as possible. I'd far rather do big climbs offroad and bomb hills onroad, if I have to have a preference. 60mph on a roadbike is way more thrilling than 35-40mph bouncing down a fireroad or 20mph on a singletrack. Conversely, grinding up a paved road sucks, but the sights and smells and conversation during a long fireroad climb is stimulating.

haha, too far away for me this summer. i'm going to be working my ass off til late summer. but, like i said, a trip to to the southern sierras. i should get out on a mountaineers ride one of these days.
To be honest, I agree with PC, but probably in a less sarcastic manner.
I grew up mtn biking.
I've done fairly extensive tours on a mtn bike, and have probably logged well into the 5 digit range off road in my lifetime, and at least twice as much on the road in LA alone.
I got the rest of my family into mtn biking, they went on to race, I never did, for me the woods was just about being there.
However, I've come to really, really prefer riding on the road, particularly in a place like LA.
My riding actually takes me places I want to go, and I can get there on my own power.
Traffic is always different, the same road is almost never the same.
And to be honest, with LA's crap roads, I'd argue riding in traffic on 23c's is just as technical.
not quite. it depends where you are and all that. but most road riding is on boring roads, I'm talking about the type of riding weekend warriors do. I rode extensively in the mountains too, its where I got my start, and all the mountain riders I knew thought road riding was tremendously boring and roadies were all a bunch of fuckin snobs anyways. but all bets are off in LA.
aw man... that video reminds me of biking through the river trails in my hometown. I never rode anything but mountain bikes until I moved here. Now I'm kinda missing it.
