widowmaker,
Not sure learning Dutch is necessary. I mean they'll be flattered, but they speak English so well there, and just about all of them do, it's really not necessary.

guys, seriously, come to amsterdam, its the best... i live & ride here for the last 2 years, check out the last years custom bike event... if some of you make it this year - from 29th July to 3rd of August, i will show you round and stuff.. nearly everyone on event rides custom bikes but you can also get some of the 'normal' stock bikes rented here if you wanna ride with us.
see my pics & vids at http://FBIChoppernation2008.blogspot.com/
and this years event schedule is at http://www.choppernewsnetwork.com/fbi-part-8/fbi-8-program
I was always trying to find some cool mass rides here, but shiit, people here ride to work, from work, to the shop, from the shop, to the bar, from the bar etc etc, they are not interested. so the FBI is the closest thing i found.. last years night cruise was about 300-400 people...
let me know what you think, serj@pimpmyfiets.nl
PS - I would really love organising something like the Midnight Ridazz here, i love riding at night... if anyone is good to offer me some advice, it would be much appreciated :)

As far as PC and Amsterdam being safer than LA. I think there is some truth to it, but only sorta. Alot of it as I saw it was the general societal acceptance of the bike and the numbers of people who embrace them. Since the general public uses them so much and the laws work to protect them, people are looking out for them and expect them to be on all streets at all times. LA.....not so much. Also, In Amsterdam, there are real bike "lanes" set up. some separated, some not. Driving there is also more difficult and expensive, so there are fewer cars. So over all I think it likely is safer. BUT, I think sometimes the people in Amsterdam are kinda out for themselves, bikers included. If you think MR people run red lights and ride with impunity, you ain't seen nothing till you go there.
A cyclist there will run you down, keep going and yell at you for being in their way.
My favorite bike city so far is Copenhagen Denmark. There are almost as many bikes as Amsterdam, the people are generally nicer, and the bike infrastructure is better. Bikes have there own paths and stop lights and it's as flat as a pancake.
They even have a free city bike program. It's like "Welcome to Copenhagen, now get on your bike....Oh, you don't have one? Here ride this one for free."
http://www.bycyklen.dk/english/thecitybikeandcopenhagen.aspx
There are some hiccups in the plan, like finding a good bike all the time and needing to return the bike to a city bike rack when your done, to get your 20 Kroner coin (about $4.00 US) back. Over all though, it was awesome!!
Definitely go to Amsterdam. It is a beautiful city with alot to offer. But do your best to get over to Copenhagen too. I think you'll like it.

I cant speak for Prick Captain, but I think he might be referring to the fact that Bicycles in Amsterdam are mostly separated by roads and lanes that are blocked off to car traffic. Yes, this is safer, but the cyclists get less elbow room and have to deal with heavy cycling traffic in close proximity to each other. Yes, you can ride on the streets, and cars are considered "guests" on the roads. However, all these separated, busy and narrow bike lanes can seem confusing to someone who is used to just riding on the streets alone.
