There will also be nineteen workshops available throughout the day to learn more and share information about a wide range of key bike, transportation, and health and environmental-related topics.

workshop list

Workshop Title: Bicycles and the Southern California College/University
Presenter/s: Ramon Martinez of the Green Bike Program at Pitzer College
Short Summary: The goal of the workshop is to promote bike ridership on campuses, connect student activists to professional activists, and cultivate lifelong bicycle advocacy and jobs. The workshop will address the role of campus programs in moving forward the larger Southern California bike movement.

Workshop Title: Overcoming the Barriers of Bicycling through Social Networking
Presenter/s: Ron Milam of Bikesage
Short Summary: How does someone decide to start bicycling in LA? While many people have started bicycling in Los Angeles, the majority of people still do not ride on a regular basis. This panel explores innovative, peer-to-peer strategies for encouraging people to start riding a bicycle. The workshop will present the initial results of the BikeSage concept, areas in which it has been successful, as well as areas in which challenges remain. After an initial presentation, the format will open up into a facilitated discussion.

Workshop Title: Advanced Bicycle Planning Tools
Presenter/s: Ryan Snyder of Ryan Snyder Associates (Urbanist transportation planning consulting firm)
Short Summary: Many of the streets that can easily add bike lanes already have them. Many of our flood control channels and other rights of way have bike paths. Yet, our network is far from complete. We have to use more innovative and assertive techniques to provide a reliable bicycle network. This session will cover newer bicycle planning tools such as bicycle boulevards, road diets, roundabouts, colored lanes, sharrows and more. The presenter will bring knowledge from across the US, Canada and Europe.

Workshop Title: Complete Streets: Lessons from the Past as a Blueprint for the Future
Presenter/s: Erik Knutzen, Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition and co-author of The Urban Homestead
Short Summary: Our streets used to accommodate more than big cars. We'll take a look at what streets used to look like one hundred years ago and what they look like in other parts of the world today. What does a aimlessly wandering donkey cart have to teach us about democracy? Why is it illegal to cross mid-block as a pedestrian? Can I ride an elephant down Wilshire Boulevard? With short videos and slides we'll show how the answers to these questions can make our neighborhoods and cities livable, democratic spaces once again.

Workshop Title: Bike Safety in the Inner City
Presenter/s: Mark Johnson and Lottie Cleveland of City Lites;
Short Summary: Hear representatives from South Central LA's City Lites tell of their advocacy for health and wellness through bicycling.

Workshop Title: A Ciclovia in LA?
Presenter: Adonia Lugo and Bobby Gadda of Ciclovia
Short Summary: Help establish a Ciclovia (recurring car-free festival) In Los Angeles! Learn from examples in other cities and countries.

Workshop Title: Women and Bikes Panel

Short Summary: Hear the stories from women on the frontlines of local bicycle advocacy, including women from Long Beach Associate for Children with Asthma, LA County Bicycle Coalition, Biclycle Bitchen, and CICLE

Workshop Title: Creating a Transportation Greenway along the Arroyo Seco Corridor in Northeast Los Angeles
Presenter/s: Arturo Gonzales and Tim Brick of the Arroyo Seco Foundation
Short Summary: Learn about efforts to create a bikeway and greenway along the Arroyo Seco, incorporating watershed restoration elements.

Workshop Title: Engaging Bicyclists in Safe Routes to School
Presenter/s: Elisa Wong and Andrea Azuma of Kaiser Permanente and Brooke Driesse of the Safe Routes to School National Partnership
Short Summary: Join the movement to improve opportunities for children to safely walk and bike to schools. Learn about the Safe Routes to School National Partnership and how organizations and individuals can get engaged.

Workshop Title: Lose up to Two Tons in One Day: The Amazing Car-Lite Diet
Presenter/s: Liz Elliot and Shay Sanchez of CICLE;
Short Summary: Learn the importance of living car-lite, and how to create great bike routes, carry loads on your bike, and keep your experiences positive and fun.

Workshop Title: Power Analysis Exercise

Is there a time shedule for the day? I haven't seen anything that lays out how the day is going to go. I'm assuming that there's going to be multiple events going on at the same time too, yeah?

It seems like a missed opportunity that one group of people worked so hard producing the amazing ArtCycle event, and another group has been busting hump to produce the Bike Summit and they are only a week apart with no seeming connection between them.

I didn't even see any flyers for bike summit at the ArtCycle event.

There is no doubt that this Bike Summit will be worth attending.
From what I have seen it will be a bit more on the academic/ activist side of things. No disrespect to those who have done the heavy lifting on the bike summit, but I think the next level for our community is to bridge the gap between the vibrant bike culture, bike activism, and practical cycling, in an event that EVERYBODY in the region feels like they must attend.

I think we need to cross-pollinate!

Politicians, Bike Punks, Commuters, Activistas, and Tranpotation Wonks rolling around in a sweaty pile until a mutant bike baby is conceived that will grow up and take over L.A. Thats the kind of bike porn I wanna see.
