Okay, I posted the ride so it's going to happen!
http://midnightridazz.com/viewStory.php?storyId=2318
Who wants to ride in celebration of the year of the Ox?
If there are vegetarians who want to do this ride, speak up and I'll find a restaurant that has veggie options. Otherwise, I want to get Xiao Long Bao.
reply
O ya, I <3 food. Who wants to ride across from the Westside?

Yes I want to ride from the Westside!

Dzamn, it's gonna be about
30 miles one way. I can only imagine how much I will eat once we get there. What I'm not sure about is if I can ride back at a decent pace afterwards...
Any update on the route?

Here's the route:
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2504334
It's the least climbing I could figure out, so the ride can be all inclusive, if we decide on the day that we feel like climbing, there's a couple changes that would add some nice hillz. (i.e. entering Pasadena from Colorado and then cutting down to Huntington...)
Food will be had between miles 18 and 19 around the corner of Duarte and Baldwin at Din Tai Fung (dintaifungusa.com).
With stoplights and a mechanical issue, we got the restaurant in 1.5 hours this weekend... does everyone feel comfy doing an avg 15-16mph? Otherwise we can move up the roll out time by an hour so that we can have more breaks.
Given the possibility that we will all be too stuffed to ride far/fast after dinner, we can also ride to the Gold Line and take that back into the city to shave some miles off!

there is one person who is coming just for the food and not the ride, so peeps can always just meet us at the restaurant too.

I'm riding for Tet!
Any Pho places around there?
pretzels01.20.09 - 10:16 pm
reply
@pretzels -- the two vietnamese places i like in that neighborhood are golden deli and vietnam house, both of which are on las tunas about maybe 1.5 miles southeast of din tai fung. both have pho, and i think vietnam house serves booze.
nancine01.20.09 - 11:37 pm
reply
I all for the ride.
But will the puny hills kill me?
How big are they?
rayrayray01.20.09 - 11:42 pm
reply
@cranktankerous -- they won't have chicken feet at din tai fung but we can grab you some at phoenix bakery next door. where they have the best post, sweaty ride drink, coconut milk with taro and tapioca.
sugar + veggie fat + 2(starch globules) = yum!
nancine01.20.09 - 11:42 pm
reply
@rayrayray, with the current route, the steepest incline would be the stretch of glendale heading towards fletcher (before the red lion tavern) and the rollers on cesear chavez/sunset could be unpleasant if we're full and tired at mile 37.
i think when we did the route scout last weekend, cranktankerous said that it was slightly faster than a ROBOTZ ride. is that a good gauge?
nancine01.20.09 - 11:54 pm
reply
Did someone say Phoenix Bakery?
As in "best strawberry cake on the planet" Phoenix Bakery?
I will bring a backpack to carry extra slices back with me.
pretzels01.21.09 - 8:55 pm
reply
this is going to be a night of gluttony!!!
@pretzels - i've never had any of the baked goods from phoenix. perhaps we can have a taste test, there's a jj's bakery across the parking lot that gets really great reviews too.
nancine01.22.09 - 12:20 am
reply
Enjoy the gluttony! It's not like it's some deadly sin, as far as I know.
You know, I don't think that's the same Phoenix Bakery that I know - the one on Broadway, that has these cakes:
We do pass the area on the ride back, so maybe I'll swing by when we get near. It will be worth it.
pretzels01.22.09 - 1:08 pm

if it goes faster than robotz then i can't go because i won't be able to keep up
i'm doing the caturday metric the day before

Assuming an hour and a half to get to Scoops, I would say leave BRW at 2:30pm. Lymbzero may want to roll with us, I'm pretty sure he's on the westside.

I think west-siders will be meeting at Bikerowave around 2:30 pm.
Not sure how much the meal will cost. I say a max of $20 as cheap as $10. but, the more people the cheaper it will be.
LOBSTER Anyone?
I is there.

I'm not sure what the plans are to eat. Are we eating half way through the ride, or at the end? Where at?

@secretragingcow - Westsiders will be riding out from BKW at 230.
@ijunes -We are eating half way through the ride at din tai fung -- it's a place that does xiao long bao dumplings and noodle soups and stuff like that. So it won't be expensive, it kind of depends on what you order.
@user1 - we are eating half way through the ride (mile 18.5)

@EVERYONE - thanks for coming out and making this a kickass New Years!
BIG PROPS to the guy who brought hong bao for every rider. (I don't know how to spell your name, so I won't name check you!) It was really thoughtful, and I'm going to laminate mine as a spoke card! Also BIG PROPS to the kids who attempted this on non-road bikes/fixies...I can't believe you hauled the weight of your bikes up those hills! If you guys get lighter framed bikes, you'll be speed demons!
@pretzels, injunes, and wylie -- sorry you guys missed it, i was worried that perhaps the time change would have f'd things up! (sorry pretzels!) but there was talk about dinner about doing a Iranian New Year's ride and possibly a recurring foodie ride so keep an eye out!
Chinese New Years Ride Report:
Four of the Westsiders rode out from BKW, and got to Scoops with time to spare so we noshed on ice cream and got to meet the other nine riders who came out. The Sunday afternoon traffic on Sunset and Glendale was pretty chill, and once we crossed the 5 things really lightened up. One rider did turn back, but the remaining 12 made it to Din Tai Fung at a pretty good clip! Luckily bitingduck met us at the restaurant and put our party on the list beforehand and we were seated pretty quickly. We had worked up a mighty appetite and ordered the following:
7 platters of pork dumplings
7 platters of pork and crab dumplings
4 bowls of spicy beef noodle soup
3 plates of sauteed garlic spinach
2 bowls of fried pork chop noodle soup
3 plates of shanghai rice cake stirfry
2 platters of red bean dumplings
(did i forget anything?)
I have never seen chopsticks move so fast! And I don't think this restaurant had ever had such a motley crew of sweaty hungry folks!
After gorging ourselves, we reconvened to the Phoenix Bakery next door and ran into FrenchConn and his friend (who's name I didn't get). They were gracious to join part of our return route! Our return took us along Valley and past Cal State, and we took a rest stop to order quesadillas from a taco stand (because clearly all that food listed above wasn't enough!) and made it back to Scoops by 11:30. We only had one flat and that was while in the parking lot of the restaurant, so we were blessed by the bike gods!
Avg. pace was 15.8 mph. Total distance covered: 40 miles for those who met up at Scoops and 52 miles for the Westsiders.
Gōngxǐ fācái!

What a feast that was. And the quesadillas on the way back - I had never had anything like that before, so ill, so different. That alone begs for another ride to that spot.
I'd never ridden that far North East before. Arcadia... Sheesh!

Nanci,
Thanks for putting this ride together. I had a great time rolling with everyone. Great route and greater food! Tell you the truth, the reason I jumped on this ride was cause the ride headed East. Not too often I have a chance to ride east, so I jumped at the chance. Love going east! Btw, FrenchConn's friends name is Stomachache. Look forward to rolling with everyone again.

Dim Sum and quesadillas...I love LA!
No need to apologize for my not keeping up to date on the ride specifics. I'll just catch you on the Iranian New Year's ride! I don't know what Iranian food is like, but if it's anything like Armenian food, I'm already salivating.
Hmmm, I just realized...since I have jury duty this week, I can swing by Phoenix Bakery and get some of that sweet strawberry cake!

Just came across this. This is Nanci that rode westside GOGA? I used to GOGA before grad school came and took over my life. (BTW, is it still going on?) It seems as if I've always had class on Tuesdays. But I still love to ride, and I love food and Jonathan Gold, so this ride sounds right up my alley. However, I work on Sunday mornings. Is this an afternoon/evening ride? I see the last ride started at 4:30. This one, too?

We're doing Year Two of the Chinese New Year Ride!
http://midnightridazz.com/viewStory.php?storyId=4206
It's going to be on Saturday February 13th (the day before Chinese New Years...) This is a moderate paced ride from Scoops to Arcadia so expect to ride 14-16mph for 20 miles, we will then massively chow down and then ride home.
We spent $22/person last year at Din Tai Fung and we will try to stay in that budget range for this year's restaurant choice.
