SALTON sea 2010 ?
Thread started by Coe coe buttaa at 10.26.09 - 9:51 am

Will this year's Salton Sea trip be over President's day weekend? I heard it might be over a weekend in March.

Just curious because Mini bike winter up in PDX is on that weekend and it sounds like it's going to be an event worth coming up for (I know you guys already did it once).

Here's the flier from 09: http://www.zoobomb.net/minibikewinter/

Cheers <3

yesth, Salton Sea is still Open for business. We're fortunate that It hasn't been shut down for last year's Zombie infestation. In fact it is getting a make-over, the new improved Salton Sea is now a utopia* of sorts.

One thing we know for sure, it will be on Presidents/Valentines weekend (Sorry Nicki, we'll miss you if you don't come...)

Another thing we know for sure, if you stay with Ridazz Camp, there will be a fee to cover Excrement Containers and Heat Generators.

Details soon...

*ooh, yes. That's a hint for the THEME, here's another...

"The seeds of the Little War were planted in a restless summer during the mid-1960s, with sit-ins and student demonstrations as youth tested its strength. By the early 1970s over 75 percent of the people living on Earth were under 21 years of age. The population continued to climb — and with it the youth percentage.
In the 1980s the figure was 79.7 percent.
In the 1990s, 82.4 percent.
In the year 2000 — critical mass."

The truth is Imperial County contacted a couple of the original organizers and said we're going to have to create an EIR for waste water disposal, rehabilitation of the campsite, get insurance, group permits, and traffic control for the ride to Bombay Beach this year. Way too expensive.

Salton Sea is cancelled.

Dear Ms. Monster,

1. I am good. I just took a nice shower. My hair is all clean, I'm wearing clean cloths that aren't covered in fake-blood and sweat/stink. I can't tell if I'm hungry or thirsty, my tummy feels funny.

2. Tren Way are doing well, too. They're expanding and looking towards the future, as usual.

3. The Salton Sea was closed due to over-population. But the Zombie infestation seems to have subsided. The rides will be posted soon, camping may be postponed until 2010. They're doming the whole area, that takes time. So there might not be camping. But rooms may be available at reasonable rates. The rooms will at least be clean, new & private.

I love you man, you're so totally pimping the better areas of the Mojave River region in these kick ass shots of yours.
Once you get beyond the BIA-induced torture of cracker-boxes and cookie-cutters, you begin to discover the true nature of what there is to love about "that desert beyond the San Gabriels".

Just remember, all the cool shit is going to be either;
-East on the 40 going towards AZ.
-North of the 58 and going towards Reno on the 395.
-Or, Eastbound on the 18 going past Apple Valley towards Lucerne, 29 Palms,. etc

We also have a ZERO ALCOHOL policy.

If we DO pay the 7 THOUSAND to camp that means we have to pay the cops to patrol us too.

I'm guessing it'll be around EIGHT THOUSAND DOLLARS.

Thanks guys.

if the event is about the people, the events, the fun... then it can happen in many different places.. sure.. you may want to call it something else, but it should be just as much fun

i don't know how you guys put on the event, or what it takes.. but i'm sure you all are creative enough to figure out a way to make it happen

i think $40 each would be hard for many people to put together, but i think $20 each is reasonable.

Actually I just had our accoutant tally this up. It's going to cost close to $600k to cover permits a "20million" dollar insurance policy the EIR and the sherriff, Chp and homeland security. Also there needs to be an air strip reserved and maintained at Edwards airforce base for airforce one AND marine one ( the presidential helicopter) which may touch Down at ridazz salton sea. bicycle 1 will also be on call as well as beer one and blunt one.

It's going to cost a little over $3 million.

Salton Sea is great but it doesn't need more than two nights. 9 out of 10 people go Friday night and Saturday night and leave Sunday night.

It could be a chance to do something different and also have the people from PDX visit us later at Salton Sea.

As for taking your bike on the plane... No you won't. We'll have a few people go up with a truck or a van and carry all the bikes.

Anyway. You don't even have to go to Portland if you don't want to. All I'm saying is put the two events 2-6 weeks apart so that those of us who want to do both can do both.

Everything else are just particulars that aren't affected by any authority or governing organization or individual.

Laharr knows how to build a geodesic dome, BUT, his dome -which is only 6.5' at the center and about 16' across took him about 40 hours to make the custom parts. It took him about a 1.5 hours to build it. The dome that Deathguild uses as their Thunderdome needs a crane to build and a flatbed truck to haul the parts. Not discouraging you, just giving you an idea of what it entails. Otherwise, AWESOME - Make it happen.

I'm hearing that Salton Sea planning is being done on Facebook. I appreciate the enthusiasm and excitement, but it's in the works!

You have all the information you need, nothing has changed. Just start saving for transportation and food, and be ready to pay the $5 bucks when whatever collecting plan gets set up.

1. There aren't any "organizers" for this event, it's a DIY event.
2. The only "organizing" will be a couple rides that are basically the same rides before (Bombay Beach and Niland Critical Mass) and
3. $5 being collected, per person, for community fire and potties.
4. This isn't burning man, people live there, so realize that it's not a war-zone that we can trash. It's a place that welcomes us, and we need to be just as respectful.
5. We are 1-hour from the Mexican border, and there are Homeland Security everywhere - they WILL SEARCH YOU, YOUR TENT, YOUR VEHICLE.
6. Salton Sea is NOT A FREE FOR ALL, you can die, go to jail, or get injured if you do something stupid. Don't do something stupid.

There are more principles that people need to abide by, it's pretty simple really, be nice or leave.

I think people are used to a heavy level of structure and organization, things I don't think are needed. All anyone really needs to know is where and when to be. The $5, which is a ridiculously minimal cost, which will guarantee some basic levels of comfort that I think everyone can agree we will need, fire and a place to poop. Everyone else is responsible for everything else, including FOOD/WATER/FUN.

The thing that REALLY needs to be emphasized is keeping things cool with the locals. I've been hearing rumors of a serious sound system being brought, which leads me to believe that someone is thinking of turning our Bike/Camping trip into a RAVE. Seriously? A rave? I fucking hope not. But then again, do whatever the fuck you want - AS WILL I.

Um, so... what else? ... don't get me fucking arrested with your stupidity and lack of discretion or I will kill you. You don't run around the city screaming "Weee, I'm on Shrooms!!!" Do you? fucking morons, then don't do that shit at Salton Sea. Keep that shit on the DOWN-LOW.

PACK IT IN / PACK IT OUT

This means TRASH. Don't fucking let it hit the ground.

There will NOT be a community trashcan.

There will NOT be a community recycling bin.

Any trash you bring, or create, YOU BRING IT HOME WITH YOU.

Even if you borrow a kitchen, you take the trash and scraps that you create.

If you bring drinks, even recyclable bottles and cans, no one is going to sort that shit for you, so YOU BRING IT HOME WITH YOU.

This includes CIGARETTE BUTTS.

This includes "BIODEGRADABLE" shit.

We police our own. No one is going to feel sorry for you if another one of us catches you littering and tears you a new one. You've been warned. Some of you may have witnessed my patience and temper tested. You will lose, because when it comes to trash, I will be right.

BRING YOUR OWN TRASH BAG.

This is Midnight Ridazz's Annual Camping Trip to Salton Sea, Salton Sea for short.

1st, and foremost, it's a series of BIKE RIDES in the middle of NOWHERE.
2nd, the Camping at Slab City is pretty much incidental and it's "organization" is circumstantial.
3rd, you are there on your own free will, and responsible for your own actions.

It's no coincidence that it is being run like Burning Man. I, personally, have been going to Burning Man before I was doing Midnight Ridazz, and quite frankly a lot of it's principles are the same principles I apply to pretty much everything I ever do, such as LEAVE NO TRACE and Radical Self-Expression, Radical Self-Reliance and Do-Acracy.

Several rides will be posted soon, the start of these rides will be at Ridazz Camp, which will be within the borders of SLAB CITY, which is also an autonomously planned, organized and policed community. We will be guests there, and they like us. They DON'T like the Ravers that come once in a while. They don't like the tweakers and off-roaders that come and fuck the place up. We don't want to be THOSE people.

SLAB CITY is a DANGEROUS PLACE. You will die there if you fuck up. The locals carry guns, and there are folks that will fuck you up, steal your shit, and drink your blood - I am NOT exaggerating. But there are also some beautiful and sacred places such as Salvation Mountain and the Library. We have friends there, such as MOTH who lives in the water tower, and Charlie Chasterus, who lives in East Jesus (population 1). So don't fuck things up, or I'll fuck you up.

With that said, get ready for an amazing adventure and get ready to get your mind blown.

We are trying to do something different. Our own thing. So if you're looking for Burning Man, this isn't for you. This is for the bike community by the bike community, and so has a different approach / feel / etc.

No one is saying a Raver can't go. Knock yourself out, please come. But don't forget your candy bracelets and your pacifier. No one really don't care what you listen to, or how you look. There is no discrimination happening here.

BUT, a lot of us are saying NO to bringing a huge sound system and turning our BIKE rides into a FUCKING STUPID RAVE.

@omwemwaer What Rev. Dak was saying it that the residents of Slab City don't like some ravers. This is because there have been groups who have come through and disrespected the community by partying and trashing the place. We are staying right near Slab City - we can and should consider ourselves to be staying IN Slab City - which is a community. We need to make sure to respect that. People who roll through and party like crazy and leave a shithole behind do not sit well with the residents, understandably.

And, frankly, if you look at the MOOP maps every year after Burning Man, the areas that are the most fucked up are the giant dance camps. Why? Because weekend warriors who go there just to dance show up, trash the fuck out the place, don't care because they're all fucked out of their minds, and then leave. If rave/partying is someone's only purpose for going somewhere, then there's a likelihood that person will not consider the environment around them, the people around them, the community around them. And that shit is just not acceptable on a Ridazz trip.

THE THEME FOR MIDNIGHT RIDAZZ : SALTON SEA - 2010...

A long, long time ago, the Salton Sink was about as desolate of a place you can possibly go. It was as low as Death Valley, just as hot, but much larger. One day it was accidently filled with water to became the Salton Sea, the largest body of water in California.

Its water was fresh, its surface was calm and as smooth as glass. Cities started to pop up along its banks. Speed-boat records were being broken, and water skiing was flourishing. It was a beautiful oasis in the middle of the desert.

Then things started to die.

The pristene lake began to dry up, dead birds floated on its surface, and the putrid smell of rotting fish filled the scalding air. This forced the people leave, leaving all they built behind.

Now a land of death and decay, nature has taken over. Leaving behind a clean slate, or literally blank slabs, in its place. This is our future. This is the opportunity to create our refuge:

The City of the Future

My words may have been harsh against Ravers, lumping them with off-roaders and tweakers, there are obvious differences. But it is not me who is lumping them together, it's Charlie Chasterus, it's Builder Bill, it's Moth, it's the people at the Lizard Tree Library who have expressed their dislike of the Raves that happen there on occasion. The people there LOVE us, and many of us don't want to change that. Please respect that, and please step off with the drama. If you don't like it, don't go.

OK, now for a question:

Should we LIMIT the numbers we allow at camp? I realize that the practicality of enforcing this is pretty much impossible. It's more of a logistical problem, to make sure we have a FIRE BIG ENOUGH and to make sure we have ENOUGH PORTA-POTTIES without wasting money. If we limit, say to 100 or 150, we will know exactly how much wood to get and how many porta-potties to order. Unfortunately it will be a headache, and pretty much impossible to order more potties if the numbers increase at the last minute.

Some people will coming in an RV, they're not an issue. Some people will bring extra wood to burn, awesome. But no one will be able to bring a pottie, that's just not happening. Poop will get out of hand quickly if we fuck this up (remember AT's MOUF?)

Please discuss.

yeah I think you have to pay $5.55 if you do paypal. That's SO CHEAP for wood (it gets cold!) and the porta potties are ESSENTIAL for warding off the cops. It seems to be lawless but there are laws, written and unwritten. For example the two local "music venues" shut down by 10pm . We'll be much further away but the locals are known to call the sheriff for noise and the sheriff is known to come.

The other thing is that we are friends with some locals and it would make their life miserable to be known in their community as the ones who invite these [insert expletive]. They all depend on each other to survive there.

It doesn't mean we gotta be hush hush by 10pm . It just means we gotta be respectful and aware of the environment. That's all.

PS. It takes some time to get used to the boards. People say inflammatory stuff that unless you've been here more than 1 day you'd probably get offended by.

I have to admit that I was beyond ignorant to what had happened at the Salton Sea. I didn't realize that it was once such a thriving and even ideal desert community and to have seen what I've seen... well, it's extremely sad. I've gained a new appreciation and my respect has increased even more so for both the site and it's inhabitants.

Thanks for that video man!

If and when the sound system is broughten, it won't be a huge funkiton system. It's just speakers meant to be played.

If there is an issue while there, where people feel it's too loud, it won't be just completely ignored. We aren't assholes (not ridiculously huge assholes). Plus when we go, we are friends, not chumchummy fuck buddies, but people who recognize in one another shared interest and choose to mingle with each other.

So I don't get the fear that comes from this.

i'm going in my jeep and can take one additional person.

also, should I take a mountain bike? seems like the roads are too rough for a track bike.

slab city is small but all the roads are paved or hard packed dirt and anywhere else we ride will be on the road. the only place skinny tires are hard to ride on is in camp. everyone told us last year to bring beach cruisers and man after 20 miles to bombay beach on the highway i was wishing i had my track bike.

If you going to do the RIDE TO NOWHERE take a road bike.
It's 40 miles asphalt and 0.5 mile dirt.
It's a bitch to do 40 miles on a shitty playa bike.

Other than that the distances are so small it doesn't matter what you bring.

be careful selecting pallets for a campfire because pallets are treated with fire retardant, insecticide, fungicide, etc.

Louis, I appreciate the thought, but in my humble opinion I dont think people should be coming to Salton Sea to sell anything. The local stores and economy benefits when we go there and they are in desperate need of business. Please bring what you need, give and share if you can but leave the commerce here in LA and there in Niland to the locals. I know people are saying this isnt burning man but it does have similarities to burning man and I feel that the gift and share culture is where it's at.

also lets be careful with the wood as spiral says. it's awesome that you are working to get wood, lets just make sure its not treated wood that will make people sick.
