I have never done these NH rides, but this one is too tempting. If I take the Red Line from downtown LA, how do I get to the start point?

Take the Reline to the very end.
North Hollywood Station.
Get off the train, go up the stairs, make a slight right at the top.
gp to the street (Lankersheim), turn left.
Go up to Magnolia and make a right.
It's a couple blocks to North Hollywood Park.
You can't miss it.

how come this is a series of rides? any reason?
dave c11.7.07 - 6:05 pm
reply
The reason it is a series of rides is simply because I came up with 4 different routes . . . but was too lazy to come up with 4 different themes. Besides, many other good movie-themes-with-cycles I thought of have already been done - TRON, E.T., Pee Wees Big Adventure.
I was watching The Goonies and when I saw them riding their bikes, it hit me - "Everyone loves The Goonies! What a fun theme for a ride! Plus, I don't think it has been done yet!"
I may plan future rides with alternate themes. We'll see how these first 4 pan out . . .

Series of rides are good as long as there is a moral lessn to be learned from.......nevermind.
Anywho, these rides seem pretty cool apart from I the fact I haven't made any yet.
It would be soooo much sweeter though if someone stumbled across an actual treasure map like in the movie.
Find some underground, cave-tunnel system and force-ride through it.
Shoot it out with some Fratelli-like people, nearly fall to our deaths 'cause Andy is a half-assed organ player, myself being the first on the pirate ship and meet some corpse that resembles One-Eyed Willie.
Ah, good times.

Thanks to everyone who attended The Goonies Ride I tonight!
It was a pretty good turnout. Maybe 40 people or thereabouts. We had no mishaps. No police intervention. No hijacking. The route went really smooth. All unfolded as planned.
I enjoyed myself and met some cool people and had some good conversations. A pleasant way to spend an evening.
I hope everyone who came had a good time. If you did NOT have a good time, please be inspired to organize your own ride to fix the problems and improve things. Put a ride together that you will enjoy. That's what it's all about!
I look forward to seeing folks on the next Goonies themed ride in December. Remember the next one is a different route. One bit of advice - PRINT A COPY OF THE ROUTE and if you show up late and miss the ride, simply ride the route BACKWARDS. That way, you are sure to connect with the group and ride some of the route, even if you don't get to do the whole thing.

Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed the ride. I have organized motorcycle group rides in the past, but that was the very first bicycle group ride I ever put together. Did it 100% solo too. No help from anyone. So, I'm relieved that people had fun and it didn't implode on itself.
You want a longer one next? Cool. Well, all the Goonies rides are already planned, and they each get progressively longer. The next one is about a mile and a half longer.

As of tonight (the Monday before Ride #2) the forecast is calling for rain on the night of The Goonies Ride II.
If it is raining, I am going to wimp-out and I will not be going. You hardcore folks can bicycle in 50 degree rain; I'll be home where it's warm.
Note that the ride will NOT be cancelled if it rains. I just won't be there if it rains. So anyone who still wants to do the ride, feel free to go. Print the map. Ride the route. Have fun.
Hopefully it won't rain and I'll see everyone there.

THANK YOU! Someone finally realizes that my screenname is from The Goonies and not my real name.
I know all about cold, my friend. I'm from Ohio. I've seen 3 feet of snow and -20 degrees (-70 with wind chill) and sub-zero temperatures on a regular basis ... I know "cold" far more intimately than any native Californian - even those in the high desert. I'm DONE with wet and cold. Had my fill.
But I am actually REALLY looking forward to this ride, so I hope it doesn't rain ...

Rain forecast is looking good. We should be in the clear.
However, it will definitely be a bit brisk and chilly. Make sure you dress in layers and you'll be fine. Remember gloves if you have them. 40 degrees isn't cold, but it becomes cold when you're holding onto metal handlebars for an hour.
In the words of Young Frankenstein - "Could be worse. Could be raining."

Another successful ride! Goonies II is now history. Not a drop of rain. Turned out beautiful. Chilly, but beautiful.
For some INCREDIBLY stupid reason, I forgot to ever pull out my camera. I brought one. Just didn't use it. So I have no video or photos. Oh, well.
Thanks again to everyone for showing up. I really appreciate you turning out. I was planning on 3 stops, but we only did 2 because everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and liking the ride!
Was GREAT to see Limeyfly on the ride. Sorry you got so lost trying to find us. I was hoping to see Brittanica and Freeekeone and LizardQueen and Christine. Sorry you folks didn't make it.
The next one is going to be the COMPLETE opposite of what we just did. Goonies II was on some of the most busy streets in Hollywood. Gonnies III is going to be on some of the most lonely and deserted roads (and a bikepath) in the Valley. Gonnies III is going to be dark. Make sure you have a headlight. And again, remember to dress warm. It's going to be January, so it's gonna be brisk. And there are NO liquor stores on the route. But there will be stops. Remember to check the ride details and PRINT A MAP. If you arrive late and everyone has left, ride the route backwards until you find us.
See you there!

Completely bummed we missed this one!!!!!
I strained some muscles at work last week. Freekeone and Christine are sick. We are gonna have to print the map and do it when we are back at full strength. Even if its just the 3 of us. The route looked really fun.
Glad everyone had a good time.
Did anyone dress up this time?
I had my "mama fratteli "pearls ready to go....AAAARRRRGGGHHHH!!!!

@LizardQueen
Honestly, I would NOT recommend you do that ride with 3 people.
These are some of the most traffic-filled streets in Hollywood. The group we had was about 20-30 or so. That was a PERFECT size. It was big enough that cars had to give us space and small enough that we weren't blocking a ton of traffic and pissing everyone off.
If you attempt that route with only 3 bikes, somebody's gonna get run over by a Lexus on Sunset.
I'll likely plan that route again with a new theme in a few months. It was a good one. Even with the San Vicente hill.

Just wanted to bump the thread and remind folks that the 3rd and final Goonies ride is tomorrow night.
A few themes I'm considering for future rides.....
Little Rascals Theme. Since there tend to be few females on rides, I thought a "He-Man Woman Haters Club" ride (with an emphasis on females being WECOME to attend) would be rather funny and ironic. I don't think this would work as well as the second idea, but I find it amusing because I love Our Gang.
Comic Con Theme. People can dress up as anything animated. Superheros. Supervillians. Comics. Saturday Morning Cartoons. Disney. Warner Brothers. I wanted to call it the "Animated Ride" but I think the popularity of "Comic Con" makes it more marketable as a title.
Anyway, those are some ideas. We'll see what happens...
See you tomorrow.

Well, that's it. The last Goonies ride was tonight.
Thank you so much to the people who attended. It was the smallest of all the rides with only about 15 people in attendance, but it was genuinely the most fun for me! I'm so glad that so many people stuck around and grabbed food at the end of the ride.
I met a lot of cool and interesting people and I'm grateful to everybody who showed up. Thank you.
Despite how small the rides have been, the positive feedback has been great and I'm definitely inspired to plan out more rides in the future. As much as I love the rides of 200-300 people, I'm happy that my Goonies rides were tiny because it creates it still-very-fun-yet-completely-different dynamic.
You made it all worth it. I had a blast. Thanks for being a part of a fun evening.
