Anyone riding to the Prop 8 protest.
Yes they will block the streets again. A "circle of death", cyclone would be great too if we can get enough bicycles.

If there is anywhere close to the number of people last night there won't be room to ride a bike, although some girls on roller skates were tearing it up last night.
I probably won't be able to come due to work, but 2 PM mormon temple, anyone who can should.

Through twitter updates from people trying to find out about Mark and Rich, it seems that Mark may have been beaten by a driver in a pick-up truck. (I don't know any details) And it sound like they have been arrested and transfered to Pacific Station Jail... WTF?!

For what it's worth, these officers better not be making arrests on the grounds that they feel their religion is being trampled on.
From what I've heard, there are alot of LEO's and such that are also members of the LDS.
It would be pretty fucked up if emotions were the catalyst for those arrests.

This is turning out to be a really sad outcome, but the fight has just begun. I think I'm going to stay local this weekend to be at the protest. I missed the one last night and tonite.

It's not always that straightforward. Lawyers can't just run around saying stop you can't arrest him and the cops will let them go. If they have probable cause Cops can pretty much do what the fuck they want. A lawyer in that situation would really be most effective as a witness. Sometimes you have to let justice run its course. The cops always have their side of the story. The most a lawyer could do at this point is later on get charges dropped
That being said, there are TONS of services that deal with this type of situation for free...if need be I will put forth contact info. But right now I agree with what was stated above, we need to just sit tight. And rest assured, the lawyers are there. you just can't see 'em.

ive seen a lawyer stop a cop dead in his tracks one time while arresting someone. he happened to be there while some person was getting arrested and somehow managed to get him off. i dont know the specifics... but having someone who knows the laws extensively is a big bonus and you can rest assured that an officer would do his best to have justifiable and clear and present evidence of whatever he's charging the suspect with.

exactly. and we don't know the specifics here either. Unfortunately when you're dealing with the law, the devil is in the details.
and RBI is absolutely right. a good lawyer will always stay out of it and stand by to witness what takes place. But yes you're right the cop will be more likely to behave with a lawyer present, but the police always have their side of the story and MOST of the time are following procedure even though it may seem unfair.

I just watched mark and richard get beat down by the cops.
My 13 news just showed the incident that's on the video above that sparked their arrest, but didn't show them or indicate what happened. The guy who jumped out of his truck and clocked the protester didn't receive any ill treatment (or any reaction at all, apparently) from the police. He was standing around talking to the reporters while the guy he assaulted lay on the ground.
I can't decide whether to cry, puke, or go beat the shit out of the first cop i see. I really don't like having this much hate in me.

Bail is set at $20k each.
I know that Rich's sister is waiting to hear from him before doing anything.
It seems the following are what might happen:
1) A bail bonds company is given 10% to post the full bail and get them out tonight.
2) They are arraigned in the morning and the charges are dropped.
3) They are not released in the morning, but the bail might be lowered (people are working on getting a lawyer to argue their case).
4) Either through contributions or a bail bond company, they are bailed out tomorrow.
We will not let them spend more than one night in jail, for sure definitely, no joke.
THIS IS ALL SUCH BULLSHIT.

You might want to call the Los Angeles branch of the National Lawyers Guild. If you go to a lot of protests you know who I'm talking about: their Legal Observers are the ones you see in those bright fluorescent green caps. When I got popped in NYC four years ago during the Republican convention, NLG lawyers volunteered to represent me (and a shitload of other people) on my disorderly conduct / parading without a permit charges. NLG has also been instrumental in representing people who were manhandled or rubber-bulleted at MacArthur Park last year.
Whoever calls should have Mark's and Rich's full contact info ready at hand, along with jail location (if still applicable). It may help to point out that there is news footage of them being roughed up.
The LA NLG people can almost certainly put you in touch with lawyers who specialize in representing people who have been mistreated by LAPD. When Sexy David wakes up tomorrow and reads this, he'll probably also have some leads for you.

There is LAMBDA Legal. I don't know if they would be set up to help in this situation. They handle the high profile civil rights cases for LGbiTG people.

i understand that the mormon temple funded the yes on 8 campaign, but generalizing that all mormons are horrible is just ridiculous. i saw too many signs at the protest last night about how ALL mormons are bad and it just made me sad that this is what this has come to.

While mormons as individuals don't deserve to be hated on... (that would be unfair generalization), the mormon institution has done a very WRONG and immoral thing. That's a fact.
I too know at least one mormon who recently "came out" to his family about being AGAINST prop 8... and it was very difficult for him. He said it was the worst day of his life. His whole family ridiculed him and his wife.

Thanks for all the support, ridazz! It really means a boatload of tiny kittens to Mark and me. People from all over have been supporting us with their kind words and just all around awesomeness.
This whole thing is pretty insane and we are figuring it out. We have meetings with lawyers next week so we will see what our next move is when we figure out the new what's next.
I'm going to give a cheer to tinycities. Those words should definitely ring true to us as ridazz. I was pretty sad yesterday before all of this happened because people were yelling at the dudes in the truck (prior to them busting that dudes nose) words like, "dirty Mexicans" and "wetbacks." As I was going over to show them that not all "Mexicans" are against this Prop 8 bullshit, that's when everything happened.
Despite everything that happened yesterday, I just want everyone to remember that (RBI quote action), and I paraphrase here, "we are apart of something bigger than ourselves." It is unfortunate that this has happened but for what it's worth, this is what it took for the voices of all those affected by this to be heard.
We are figuring out what's happening as it happens. There is a lot to digest. Things are so hectic right now and I don't really know what to do. If you know me, you know I'm initially a reserved person and this incident has kind of propelled me passed that. It is thanks to the support of you ridazz that is making this all the more bearable.
Again, thanks for the support. Let's keep clear heads about this whole thing and not make any decisions that will damage us a community. We are better than that, we are the Midnight Ridazz.

Me and Graham (another valley rider) were also subjected to an eerily similar experience after accusing us of "battery on a peace officer." Graham was lucky he got a hold of someone who could bail him out while I, on the other hand, had to leave messages on my sisters and brothers cell phones and had to spend a week and a half in County Jail because of the shortage of bail money. A week and a half... luckily for me, I am prescribed a few medications and spent 85% of the time on the special floor with the rest of the medication taking lot.
To make things short, we went to court and our case was dropped to misdemeanor trespassing, which it should have been all along, and were given an abundant amount of both AA meetings and community service - CAL-Trans. Basically, I got to spend a week in jail, lost my job, had to hire an atty, pay back the bail money and eventually just get a trespassing charge? Expect some of the same. With the video footage I can't see why they wouldn't drop it from your original charge to something stupid and petty. Keep your head up... let me know if I can be of any help.
Then too, a lot of riders stepped up and helped us out. We are all a family here...

Being anti religion is far from bigotry IMHO. Religion is an opt-in belief system that people have the freedom to join and dismiss. By definition, religion is, its own philosphy, has its own prejudice and is exclusive so therefore opens itself to criticism and generalizations.
Being a person of color or sexual orientation is something we are born with and therefore its wrong to discriminate against.

The way this is really going to change is if we influence religion to be more accepting. I'm highly critical of religion as well, but it's fine line before it becomes shooting your self in the foot. Churches are not going to evaporate between now and the next election. If we lump all religion as promoting bigotry and being the enemy, than that will serve no purpose then to justify their fears, however irrational they may be.

I was raised Christian and have my own fucked up stories and reasons for leaving, but I think it's important to acknowledge that not all religious people are [insert viewpoint that sucks]. We need to find where we can have common ground and work from there. If we make this into just an anti-religion message, it will create as many enemies as allies, and that's not how you win elections.

It's also important to point at that these Religions teach, and their followers believe, that being homosexual is a CHOICE and use that as their basis for discrimination and believing that it is wrong.
Religion is permeated with ignorance, but there are always exceptions to the rule. The Episcopalian Church is an example.
And Religion on its own is not necessarily a bad thing. Where it goes wrong is when religious people get into government and inject their beliefs into law. Religion mixing with government is where everything gets fucked up.

Could just as easily argue that the bible it self disagrees with that. Jesus taught that we are not to pass judgment on others. Or what about religions like Buddhism that are focused on a path to self enlightenment? Keep in mind I'm not a religious person, I consider my self agnostic. I'm just saying the world is more complicated then over generalizations. This movement is about equal rights, not lets end religion. There are people who are liberal and accepting of other views who still consider them self Christian, and if we want to pass liberal measures, we should be reaching out to those people, not alienating them.

Incidentally, Jesus didn't really mean that nobody should ever judge. He wasn't that much of a chump, no matter what Nietzsche may have said about him. The idea was to remind people that they themselves would be judged some day, so they had better not be uncharitable in their own judgments or else God may give them a taste of their own mean medicine. A person who truly refused on principle to judge anyone, ever, would inevitably devolve into the kind of wishy-washy sap that even Jesus would want to punch in the face.

There is a big schism in the Episcopalian church right now between the progressive side - which is REALLY supportive of gay rights - and the conservative side - which is very much not. There was an interesting article about this in the
June issue of Harper's magazine.
Incidentally, a good friend of mine in SF just married an Episcopalian priest last week, in advance of the vote. He's pretty damn happy that they decided to go ahead and do it, natch.

Interesting question, you'd have to talk to the National Lawyers Guild. Observers can't just go out anywhere to observe stuff, so the NLG would have to get involved, if you want I can send you email addresses of people to contact. every wonder about the similarities between your disgust toward same-sex couples, and the irrational hatred and disgust that the black /colored community received (receives) from those who not only participate in making law (i.e. voters and law makers), but participate in contributing to the continued support of these irrational and hateful sentiments?
It was once thought interracial marriage was gross and disgusting. Do you think so? A black penis in a white body is disgusting, right? If only interracial couples could just hide their love for another, then the world will seem a lot more beautiful, right?

look- i didnt think anyone was gonna take what i said srsly, i mean read the tone of what i said its a joke...and all jokes aside- Im not agro towards gays at all...and im man enough to tell those of you who i offended -I Apologize. I'll earnestly try to word how i feel a little nicer next time, but i feel like i should be able to post the way i feel about a subject...and in all honesty its good to play devils advocate sometimes. I did blurt out that comment but in some ways i just feel like there are much more important issues right now...and to ride to that? i dunno i just thought that this wasnt a political thing?
I too feel like this whole prop8 movement can be a bit loud...why cant gays (even heteros) just be happy with being life partners...whats the big deal about getting married...isn't marriage a religious concept?

@md2 - im egyptian, and my gf is lakota sioux and white. no joke. ppl look at us like we're shit...ppl look at me in general like im shit. also id like to think that im open...but im a homophobe for sure...i just havent had any good experiences with them...ive noticed too that most gays that ive met look at me like im shit too...i mean im a dark black egyptian...sometimes i feel like shit really must roll downhill when gays look at me like im weird or something.
for those who want me gone from here ...ive tried trust me, but i am stuck with you ppl and im a much a part of this community as you are.

In case you haven't noticed amodone, the MR community has largely been leaning to the thing that's the "opposite of right".
We've all got our own views on certain ideas and topics, but at the end of the day, bicycles and having a good time with them is what MR.com is really all about.
Yeah, I used to babble on about unrelated topics that had nothing to do what-so-ever with bicycles, but after noticing that even regular political discussion arenas wouldn't give me an inch, I've let it fall to the way-side and now just discuss bicycles and how it relates to future human-culling expeditions.
I mean, you have to be sneaky when it comes to managing such intelligent prey.
Deer, moose, rabbits, and even squirrels become easy game after awhile.
It is humans that are the most stubborn of all species, one-shot/two-shot, bullet or bolt, they just keep on running not wanting to become a dipping piece in my BBQ sauce dish.
