CALLING ALL FEMALE RIDERS!

Thread started by
Anna.annA at 06.24.10 - 2:02 pm
Hey girls!
Are you tired of being the only girl on the ride? i know i am. I have gotten together with a few other women riders who feel the same way and we've formulated a plan. We plan on getting girls out on their bikes and out on the streets. We want to show everyone that the girls can do everything a guy can do, only look better doing it! This ride will help the girls who can't ride as well or as fast as the others and will cater to the girls who want to push harder and harder each time. (because i know i do) So ladies, get your bikes ready to roll. (I'm willing to help with that for a minimal cost.) And don't forget to keep checking the thread for updates.
We'll be posting the ride soon, so keep your eyes peeled!
HAPPY SUMMER EVERYONE!

valley girl ride is faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar. also, it sounds like this one is going to start out on the easy side but push more and more each ride, which the valley girl ride doesn't do.
if that's the intent, then i'm down.

I assure you girls, we WILL push more and more each time. I like to ride fast. REALLY FAST, so this is going to be a conditioning ride, as well as social. We're gonna start on the slower chill side, the work out way faster. not too many stops.. probably only one or two.. we're still working on the kinks. This is going to be a mainly east side ride, but we do plan on riding out to the beach and other various routes. But we all know DTLA is always fun.

I crashed and didn't ride at all for a while, and am really, really out of shape...and it's going to take me a little while to get back into shape enough to ride even a little fast. Ideally, I would use this ride to help me get back into shape...but I don't want to slow people down. I sort of hear on the one hand that this will be friendly to riders than may not be as strong, but on the other hand I hear talk about riding real fast. It seems like a little bit of a tension, so you may want to be very clear before the first ride.

anyways, this sunday 4:30 at Victoria Gardens. :)

Don't worry about not riding for a while.. I broke my thumb not too long ago and getting back in it wasn't hard at all. You'll get back into it in no time..
We will start slow. No rider gets left behind still applies! I'm a MOM RIDA and we like to stick together and keep in contact.. Fuck slowing people down, you're only as strong as your weakest rider. Another leader (DROOBY) taught me this. No matter what we all ride together.
The ride idea is still being worked on. There's a group of girls along with me getting the ride ready and completely organized. Don't worry about the ride being lame. Coming from 2 mom ridaz, it cant be.

I agree. Though I honestly don't care if I'm the only girl on rides. The point is I ride and have fun. If everyone else rides harder and faster to me it's nothing but a challenge and a way to improve myself. I have no shame in being left behind or being the "slowest" I put enough effort to keep up and still enjoy. Regardless if I'm the only girl. An all girl ride would just be discrimanatory to males and I'm sure a strictly all male ride wouldn't make us too happy.

Considering the gender ratio at rides, I'm going to guess that most of the ladies of MR often expect to be "the only girl on the ride." Anyone who has their panties in a bunch about being the only girl on a ride, probably isn't riding -- just because we are "okay" with being the only girls on a ride doesn't mean that the biking community couldn't benefit from a ladies-only ride.
The previous incarnations of ladies-only rides on MR (GOGA and Sirens) weren't designed to promote a discriminatory, separate but in/equal system. The great thing about those rides was that if you were being the "slowest" it wasn't attributed to your gender, and conversely if you were "strong" it wasn't followed by "for a girl..."
They were also environments where less experienced riders could learn without being talked down to. I'm sure a number of the women reading this thread have had a man offer to fix their flat. Not only does that chivalry assumes that the fairer sex can't do it as fast/proficiently as a man, but it also keeps women from gaining confidence and skills through experience.

Uh, being feminist DOES mean you want things to be equal. Equalist is just a term for people who are scared of being associated with terms like feminist (because of course that means you have hairy legs and hate men and that's so, like, not sexy) and don't want to aknowledge that discrimination against certain groups of people is still VERY much alive and well in America.
And, quite frankly, the thing that's most appealing to me about an all-female ride (and no, I don't want guys who are coming but say they're not going to hit on girls, because you know they just want to hit on girls without, y'know, hitting on them) is that it means not having to deal with the teenagers I've heard on some rides yelling at women on the streets to show their tits.

My intention is not to be negative, I'm expressing my thoughts on an idea in an open forum. Hostility is not directed at the ride, nor the ride leader, nor the (future) ride attendees. I'm merely commenting that I don't appreciate gender segregation of any kind especially in such a diverse community.
Of course there are people you would want to filter out and wouldn't you want to filter them out by letting the undesirables know that their attitude isn't appreciated or acceptable? Why keep disrespectful (teenagers/men who hit on women at rides) riders in the dark about why they aren't welcomed at rides? Let them know that it's their attitude not their gender.
Just my 2 cents. We all have opinions and they're all subjective.

I too have no problem with being the only girl on a ride, however, I think it's a genuine concern among women who don't ride [who would like too] that they would be alone.
If more ladies on the street saw women riding together, they would probably feel more confident about coming out to ride (and if guys haven't figured out that's how a lot of women work... HAHa. You should repeat the 4th grade).
I think this is a great idea, and I would happily support it. Of course men would be invited to come but I think promoting it as a woman's event is just fine.

I have no problem with a female-only ride if that's the direction you want to go, but I would humbly submit that it is not the only solution to being "the only girl on rides." You could also just plan to show up to other, all/any-gender rides as a group. If four or five of you show up together -- bam -- none of you are the only woman on the ride.
(But, yeah, boys can be really dumb. One time a couple of dudes on our ride were hooting at female pedestrians and whatnot. It was very embarrassing. Thankfully, when we got to the first hill, they wimped out and went home.)

Last time I encountered a cyclist by the side of the road with a flat tire, I offered to fix HIS flat and did so. Nothing to do with "chivalry." I just don't assume that every cyclist automatically knows how to use a patch kit or has ever had to use one. A lot of them, whether male or female, don't or haven't.

Since you don't assume, so I suppose you ask, right? Something along the lines of, "Hey do you need a hand?" or "Do you have tire levers and a patch kit?" Those questions allow a person the space to provide answers about their skillsets.
It's the unsolicited, "Here let me do it..." offer that bothers me. Those sorts of statements are built on a dynamic where the speaker can fix something that the addressee cannot do or would rather not do.

When I'm trying to help people out by the side of the road, I'm frankly unconcerned about allowing them the "space to provide answers about their skillsets." I just want to get the person, and myself, back on the road as quickly as possible. Some people are shy about admitting that they don't know how to fix a flat and/or they don't want to impose, so I just straight up offer to fix it in order to get the hemming and hawing out of the way.
How often do you, personally, actually hear "here, let me do it," as distinct from "do you need some help"?

Well, rest assured that if it was done to you by me, it wasn't because of your gender; it was because I wanted to skip the awkward exchange wherein the person I'm trying to help stares at the patch kit I've just handed him or her as though it were some inscrutable alien object. And then I have to be all like "you know how to use this, right?" and they're all (*insecure voice*) "yeeeah?" and I'm all "you sure?" and they're like "not really" and THEN I have to make the offer. It's nothing personal and there's no implied statement about people of your gender...more of an implied statement about people who don't carry tire levers and spare tubes or patch kits.

well then lets make sure if anyone has a flat, we have that person do it, step by step. walk them through it and make it a learning experience. so that way they can be more confident in their riding and venture out on more solo rides. i didn't ride by myself for a long time because i didn't have the proper tools or know how on basic maintenance. now that i do, i am riding a lot more.
because these ladies only rides will be smaller groups (yeah this aint no 30+ person ride, at least not right now) we can take the time to take a break and learn something new or even teach someone something useful.
and if you don't want to teach or learn, then consider it a smoke break.

Open with some other than "you know how to use this, right?" - it doesn't matter to whom you are speaking, that question implies that the person should already know how to use it, and always already makes the other person feel bad. Basic interpersonal skills.
What the rest of this boils down to, PC, is that if a group of women feels that an all woman bike ride would be an empowering experience for them, it is not for you to argue with them. It is a hypothesis to be tested by the women, and it is for the women to decide if it is a useful method or not. Period.

In the case of fixing bikes, I think that a lot of women are just quick to assume that they're being asked on the basis of their gender, which is often not the case. As one of the people who used to hang out at the back/fix other people's flats all the time, I can understand what PC is saying about assuming people don't know how to fix their own shit. For example, stillline said he likes riding with me because I'm actually capable of fixing my on shit, but that hasn't stopped him from just grabbing my bike to fix it himself on occasion. It's got nothing to do with the genders involved, it's just that most people have a self-bias and assume they are the most competent person around.
"It is a hypothesis to be tested by the women, and it is for the women to decide if it is a useful method or not."
Ms. Stephanie, I'm interested in your thoughts on this specifically. I feel like I've just watched this hypothesis be tested, and fail, time and time again in the Midnight Ridazz scene. As a scientifically-minded person, it seems absolutely ridiculous that it continues to be tested. That's why I tend to continue to chime in on these threads. I just don't understand it.

Honestly, I think a lot of it comes down to the fact that, like any ride, for it to be sustainable people simply have to like riding together. And everyone being female does not in any way mean that the riders are all actually looking for the same kind of ride (fast/slow, mostly riding/mostly social, etc.) or that they even enjoy each other's company.

I think if you want to get more comfortable around men, you should be around them vs creating a “safe” environment and excluding the other gender. I never care if I am the only woman on a ride or anywhere for that matter (and many people have said the same, except this was not on the original thread which to me sounded a bit belittling to be honest). I can go on an all ladies fast paced ride and get my ass handed to me just the same! I don’t think that being around other women automatically means you get more support and high-fives, it may actually turn out to be quiet competitive and even catty. I am not suggesting this is going to be the outcome of THIS ride, but to me it is about the group of people and not their gender. Nancy and Kevin are awesome and give me lot of support and encouragement. Actually a lot of the men on the Cyclones ride did the same. I mean, no MAN has ever spoken to me the way Anna was addressing some of the women on this thread, which makes me feel a bit unwelcome – yes! Gasp! By a woman! Just sayin’ ( I don’t know Anna and maybe it was not intended that way)
I am not discounting the fact that other women have been treated differently and have been in a group of shitty bros or wished more women were out on the ride. I understand it but I can’t relate to it. Whatever gets people more comfortable on bikes, I say go for it but I hope they don’t get stuck at this comfort level but instead take it out to other rides and commute!
If someone comes by and tells you “let me fix that for you” just say something like “nah man I got this” and let it be.. what’s the big deal?
well then lets make sure if anyone has a flat, we have that person do it, step by step. walk them through it and make it a learning experience.
This can be cool if you are in a group and generally know your surroundings, however when you are keeping the rear on a ride in a shady and/or unfamiliar neighborhood and want to get out of there ASAP it is probably best to help the person out and catch up with the ride. I usually put a new tube in when I am on the road and keep the old one to patch when I get home.

the big deal is encouraging autonomy, it can not be fostered by enabling reliance.
gender will always be an issue until there is equality in society. misogyny and sexism is alive and kicking. In the case of the riding scene in los angeles think of the various reasons you have heard of why women don't ride. those reasons may be/are(?) bullshit to you but them its valid to them because of societal conditioning. In order for this community to grow it is determined by women and men to be able to think outside of themselves, and understand what is working against them. the scene here is not all what it's cracked up to be, there is shadiness,,elitism, way too much selfishness(LA? i can blame the city for so much), and overall meanness. It can change if people are willing to change it. The rhetoric here since quite a few have expressed that they found it abrasive, it can change and that is the point.
To address the "cattiness" ,on the receiving/giving end, don't forget maliciousness can come from both genders don't let past biases fool you. don't discount someone before you have met them.
Everyone has their safe haven if it's with a certain gender, and that is okay. The point is that about having a choice and making it available.
This is like black kids on bikes the choice is there for black people to go on there and it's open to other ethnicities. i like having the choice even though i don't go as much as i want to and most importantly i like that the choice is there for others.

SHUT THE FUCK UPPPPPPPP!!!
start your own ride if you don't want to exclude anyone. Do you women honestly think WE CARE AT ALL about your hateraid? NAHHH..
It's not even about "excluding" men, it's about getting those women who don't ride BECAUSE they have no one else to ride with, it's about getting those women out who aren't confident enough to ride with a group of fixed gear guys YET.
FORGET ALL THE DDDDDUH-RAMA
It's okay that you all have your opinions, but honestly, find something better to do with your time then write a 4 paragraph( or what should be 4 paragraphs, i'm seeing a lot of run-ons) comment about how you dont like the idea of my ride.. I don't care, i don't think anyone else coming on this ride cares, so just.. like i said.
People that know me, know i'm the shit, i friggin hate drama, i'm a MOM RIDAAAA and i know how to completely disassemble and reassemble my bike, by myself.. I don't know many girls who can do that, but i know a lot that i would LOVE to teach how to..

I am all for that since i tried to get a couple of my female friends to go out there....
my question... what is the difference between an evening when the kitchen closes for one gender and open for another gender... and this particular ride.... can the same concept of the kitchen be used for this ride?

Confession, I built a bike from frame up, but didn't know how to work a presta valve. I had to have some one at Bikerowave show me how. So I could install brakes, shifters, cables, etc., but didn't know how to work a presta valve! We all have things to learn (especially when changing from one kind of bike to another). I would be happy to help other women and teach them the skills I've picked up.
Would be cool to do like a little lesson before each ride. Just like a quick 15 minutes. How to change a tire, how to use a chain break tool, how to adjust your seat post, how to install brake cables...(can easily be demonstrated in 15 minutes)...Then we ride like hell and tear up LA!
(Or we can just do the latter.)

It's okay that you all have your opinions, but honestly, find something better to do with your time then write a 4 paragraph( or what should be 4 paragraphs, i'm seeing a lot of run-ons) comment about how you dont like the idea of my ride..
Don't like it? Don't read it. Problem solved.

Open with some other than "you know how to use this, right?" - it doesn't matter to whom you are speaking, that question implies that the person should already know how to use it, and always already makes the other person feel bad. Basic interpersonal skills.
I'm not there to make the peson feel warm and fuzzy and self-actualized; I'm there to help the person get back on the road. Frankly, if she doesn't know how to use a patch kit, she should feel bad because she's gonna be be late to work one of these days due to her lack of preparedness. Feeling bad because you don't have your shit together can be a valuable tool for self-improvement.
What the rest of this boils down to, PC, is that if a group of women feels that an all woman bike ride would be an empowering experience for them, it is not for you to argue with them.
You couldn't possibly be more wrong about that. But feel free to
try to use the dogma of identity politics to squelch dissent and see how far it gets you. :)

Wes hasn't been coming out, i think she's got a lotta stuff on her plate too, so it's all good. Happy to hear work and school are keepin you busy.
