Not all of you but a lot of you...
Aaron, in the video below on his own started to cleanup at Costco after you assholes left your drinks all over the place. Leave no trace on Crank mob? ya right....
Jesse and I helped clean up after the video was shot.
Learn by Aaron's example. He's on tons of rides with his lady and is one of the good guys out there.....
that's definitely something that i tried to tell people at SAFE MOB. unfortunately, asking a bunch of drunk 18-20 year olds to pick up after themselves is apparently just too much to ask.
A few rides ago, I ran into Steveo picking up trash, which he said they were collecting to buy a new sound system. they had a pickup truck and everything. weeks later, i was talking to the guys at that same Albertsons, and they all told me how impressed they were that we were able to do that.
One idea which I've had in the works is to build a cargo bike that can hold all the trash for the whole ride for recycling. I see a lot of homeless people who ride around collecting cans. Maybe it wouldnt be a bad idea to invite them to CRANK MOB, provided they're not crazy.
No, it's really not. The hard part is relaying that little tidbit of information to a mass of 3-400 very excited drunk people and getting them to act upon it (age is probably less of the issue here).
The only time I ever leave trash in a bush is when cops are involved and a quick escape must be made. (She said that)
that's pretty embarrassing.. I'm glad there's some video of it so people can actually get an idea of what it looks like... I've pretty much stopped going to the rides where clean up is left to the few conscious people, who then have to catch up to the ride and do it all over again at the next stop..
fuck babysitting for free.
on another note - Barleye - I'm very sorry I didn't make it to TRWNN. I was physically ailed and lying in bed with a bad back..
it doesnt have to be that way. let's all stop pointing fingers and figure out what we need to do. when people litter at street parties, they pay to have disposable trash cans put out.
if we can't do that we can definitely push shopping carts to every group of people who are standing around drinking.
or we can pass out trash bags at the beginning, during SAFE MOB and at every subsequent stop, place the trash bags in the shopping carts for people, so they know what it's there for.
that will serve as a proper reminder. then rather than picking shit up off the ground, we can just push the shopping carts to a single area, and leave a neat pile of bags.
Eddie and I talked about this at the Ride with No Name. Those empty cans are worth money. We need to bring trash bags and have someone collect all that trash, with a separate bag for empty cans.
Let's make some money off of this trash and maybe keep Eddie's internet connection up.
Maybe a group of volunteers with bike racks can tie/bungee crates designated for trash (and dump/consolidate before the next run)? Unfortunately not everyone will pick up their trash (jerks, drunk, left by accident whatevs), but if more people can help clean then things will go faster and be less of a pain for the few that do it now. I'll even design/make super fab spoke cards for cleanup crew?! Or bake cookies. Some kind of incentive.
It's not CRANK mobbers that are fuckin pigs, there's pigs on just about every ride. Brad, you even had these little piggies on the No Name Ride. It was rather sad to see how far we got to on solving this problem. People left their cans sitting on the sidewalk when there was a trash can less than 10 FEET AWAY!
The last CRANK mob ride last month there was a chick and a dude I saw both throw their empty cans in the flower bed at the beginning of the ride. I'm sure they threw it right back in there after I pointed out there were trash cans on either side of them not more than twenty feet away. My bet is they threw it back in there after I turned and walked away.
It's going to take alot more than cute ideas to solve this problem. I doubt even shaming them works. Maybe if we keep stressing and keep at it, people will wise up. Another thing too, I don't buy that people are fucked up is the reason they are littering. Or that they're having too much fun. The only time that excuse works for me, is if I set my beer down and forget where it's at!
So no, I wouldn't wait for some savor of a bicycle that looks like a rolling trashcan to save you. Just get with the program and clean up after yourselves. Very rarely you're too fucked up to pick up your trash. If you are, you got way more problems than some trash! That goes for all the rides! Very few places we stop at that doesn't have a trash can.
good point, its kinda sad cause i live with a super messy person and she still throws her trash away, i think we need to stress this on the next crank mob, i did see that the spoke card thing worked pretty well, maybe that will be the next incentive.
clean up your trash and be seen doing it and ill give you a spoke card...
I think some of it might be concerned when the law shows up.
I know some people who have ditched a beer on the fly or littered iin this instance when the law shows up--people that are normally quite careful about litter.
Any ideas on how to alleviate this particular variety of littering?
That's a damn shame. C.R.A.N.K. Mob isn't going to last if people trash the places we stop. That would really be a shame because it's really a great event (L.A. needs stuff like that). Some people just have that littering mentality, and it's not just on bike rides. Thanks for picking up the trash for those irresponsible people.
Because it's the first post-crankmob set of complaints in months that hasn't involved hospital visits, moderate to severe injury, road rage incidents, stolen bikes, etc., etc., etc.
If the worst thing about this Crankmob was that a few litterbugs tagged along, things have changed for the better MASSIVELY!
Sure, people need to pick up after themselves, but things ARE getting better.
Hopefully we can keep this going, so that when the jackasses return during warmer weather, things don't revert back. I like going on rides where everyone gets home safely.
Well said. Do not lose sight of the fact that there were improvements! We just need to keep building on these improvements without impeding upon the crazy attitude of the ride!
It would be really, really fun to have one of those shopping cart hybrid bikes. I smell a January BRW project for yours truly!
Also- this just pooped into my head: how hard would it be to make a random-purpose trailer for bike-car?
@ Nathan: haha! i can't believe you remembered that! and i can't believe that i caught that comment after not having logged on in over a month.
it's true. embarrassing people and/or calling them out in front of everyone works. you just have to have a bit of courage and not worry about their response.
what a bummer to hear that this is happening.
NO Pick Up Trash? NO DANCE PARTY U.S.A, little fuckers!
jonnyboy- i love that you said 'the idea just "pooped" in your head' because the bike car as it is weighs around 200, isn't the most reliable ride (for now at least) and it's also really difficult to find people that want to ride in it... since most people want the freedom of their own bike and to leave whenever they want(of course it's fun to ride around the block but try 15 miles....).
the idea of collecting other people's trash to make money is kind of lame... unless you plan on leaving the bags there and collecting them later.
we just need to call people on their shit and remind these inconsiderate newbies to pick up after themselves.
or
we should just threaten them and tell that they will be blacklisted from future rides if we catch them littering.... scare tactics...
Every time a litterer has noticed me noticing them littering, they have bent down and picked up the trash they just threw down. No words ever exchanged. Its all about the mind control, baby,
But that Ralph's in the Marina deserved to be trashed, I can't believe they called the cops on us for "loitering" after we bought so much shit from their store. We should consider boycotting businesses that have a track record of not playing nice.
I don't necessarily like giving people the idea that "someone else" is going to pick up their trash for them, which incidentally I've done more than my share of.
It's pretty fuckin' obvious to me that anyone who leaves trash just wasn't raised right and needs educating. No excuses.
1. Clean up Call 5 mins before we start each stop! (Plus inspection)
2. Dont ride ahead of the Ride leaders! (You’ll miss the turns)
2. Call shit out and Hold your line! Maintain your position. Ride straight, ride predictably
3. be polite to everyone on/off bikes!
(4. If you can’t hold your line don’t drink and ride too drunk)
5. Ride on the correct side of the street!
I told one guy to pick up his trash and he got all confrontational! What an idiot! I’m not there to fight! But If I must put some one down with my deadly Brazilian jujitsu I will! Then ill take the wallet and shoes!

PLEASE PICK UP AFTER YOURSELF AT CRANK MOB THIS SATURDAY. I WILL BRING A FEW TRASH BAGS FOR BEER BOTTLES AND CANS AND LEAVE THEM FOR PEOPLE TO RECYCLE.
THANKS FOR YOUR TIME AND ENJOY THIS VIDEO OF MY DOGS.
"I can't believe they called the cops on us for "loitering" after we bought so much shit from their store. We should consider boycotting businesses that have a track record of not playing nice."
well what do you expect when you have a bunch of assholes on bikes drinking in your parking lot and trashing teh place?
stop crying bout some store owner kicking you off his property.
its a fucking parking lot.
maybe if these rides weren't full of fuckheads, store owners wont give a shit.
either keep fools in check, or dont post the rides on teh forum. we all know each other and have each others contact info.
organize rides privately so you can weed out idiots.
and dont even try to say anything about how these rides raise bicycle awareness, all these rides do is show the public how cyclists are just a bunch of asshole hooligans.
Crank Mob can be a party and be responsible at the same time. I know its hard to believe and would really break the party hooligans stereotype but if even 30 people decided to work together it wouldn't matter how many douchebags dropped their beer can in the lot.... we could clean it up in 5min.
I enjoy crank mob immensely and I'm willing to do a little extra work at the stops to ensure we're still welcome at all the places we visit.
I know last crank mob we were turned away from one super market that was open and simply didn't want our business.
Stop whining. Come on the ride and help us keep it clean. Or don't
on the second crank mob....or was it the fifth....richie had a shopping cart bike.
But, we accidentally dropped him in an underground parking garage, because his trash bike was slow. He was pissed. But, we waited on him at a park and he eventually showed up.
Trash bikes are slow. ???
oh...that was back in the fireworks / tagging crank mob days.
Tyler, riding by myself up here only leads to a night of busted mail-boxes and watching the sheriffs department show up from behind a shrub.
Without the rowdiness of the crowd, I go from observer of wacky shit happening, to being the Wacky-shit happening.
On the ride i "lead", i always announce at the start of the ride for people no littering, etc. At the stops i check on each of the smaller cliques and tell them to "not burn the spot" and to clean up. I think that announcing "5 mins and start cleaning up" is a really great idea too. I always carry a few extra plastic bags for clean up. WHoever "leads" the ride should organize with a few of the regulars to help police their ride. We've had a pretty good run of riders telling people to go pick up their shit that they drop while riding. THe offenders stop and turn around and pick it up. If the group makes it not cool to litter, people want to conform to the group and will not litter.
