Pedaling Revolution: Meet the Author, Jeff Mapes in LB!

Bring your own brown bag lunch and enjoy an overview from a professional, practitioner perspective of cycling in American cities and how Long Beach is measuring up to its goal of becoming the best bike city in America.

Academic Focus 2:30-3:30pm
Cal. State Univ. Long Beach
University Bookstore
Mr. Mapes will present an overview then lead a lively discussion of social/political change in America and how cyclists are actively engaged in reshaping American cities.

Community Focus 6:00-8:00pm
Long Beach Museum of Art
2300 East Ocean Blvd.
Mr. Mapes will address key findings of his research related to cycling in America, forecast upcoming innovations, and report on political/economic trends that support cycling as a viable, attractive transportation option.

In Pedaling Revolution, Mapes details how cyclists are transforming cities in the United States. He describes how Seattle, Portland and other cities have brilliantly transformed into vibrant, healthy, safe and attractive urban cities where bikes are used in everyday lives. Mapes discusses his personal experiences as a middle-aged professional who learned how to be an urban cyclist and his newfound mastery of his hometown as a free range, healthier adult.

Mapes goes further by looking into the future and seeing how cities such as Long Beach can transform into livable communities, places where cycling and walking are designed into the streetscape as pleasant and safe transportation options.

Charles Gandy(pic on the right), the Cityâ€™s Mobility Coordinator, considers this a serendipitous opportunityâ€”Just as Long Beach is launching its own campaign to become the best bike friendly urban city in the nation, along comes Mapes providing a roadmap, statistical support, debate points from various perspectives, historic context, economic, safety and health benefits of riding bikes and creating great places to ride.
