Possible stolen bike on Red Line?!

I was on the Red Line coming home to Beverly/Vermont station. I saw a short guy with a bike too big for him. He was sitting next to a bike polo player, who has a red Nishiki MTB with white disc wheels. The polo guy started asking him questions.
Apparently the bike was for sale, for $100. It was a blue single speed, two black brakes, a red stem, black riser bar with a BMX-style crossbar, SPD-looking pedals. All black wheels with thickish 28-32 tires. Short guy was about 5'4", Latino, had somewhat spiky short dark hair, ill-fitting grey t-shirt and black pants, and black sneakers that were not clipless shoes.
Next thing I know the short guy is yelling loudly. He thought polo player was taking a photo. Short guy punches him in the face, polo player doesn't strike bike and gets up from seat. Short guy lands another blow. Polo player gets off at next stop. Short guy was super pissed, kicks bike as he gets off train.
I got off the train at my stop, the short guy and bike kept going. I felt the urge to do something but honestly I was afraid. How do I know the short guy doesn't have a knife? More importantly, how do I know what really happened? It's not like I could have asked him if the bike was stolen!

This reminds me of an almost identical situation where Matt Stilline from Polo was involved. At Hollywood and Highland he saw a sketchy dude trying to hustle a purple EAI track bike. He immediately recognized it as one belonging to Tim Hammer of LA Brakeless. Thinking swiftly, Matt told the thief he was very interested in the ride and would return shortly with a wad of dough. Instead he came back with the Law, and Hammer got his bike back. True story.

I had visions of a "don't steal bikes, bro" moment but I couldn't confirm that he wasn't armed or didn't have backup. At the time I couldn't be sure that the bike was stolen, either. Sorry Davis, I should have backed you up.

Pretty sure this was stolen out of his house actually. Thieves can also break u locks too. If they wanna take it, they're gonna take it.

As much as it sucks that Davis got punched, at least now the police report is also for assault. Maybe the cops will take this more seriously than they have other stolen bike cases.

Well hopefully someone NOW learned not to make a comment before they know the story. Yeah, it's heartbreaking Brick's bike got stolen. But the actual scary part is that this guy walked onto his property and stole it. I've had a bike stolen from my house before and the feeling of safety that they steal from you isn't replaceable like a bike. Guess we should just build a wall around the NO Manor.

Beating Brick to the punch here- he got his bike back! It was sold to a sketchy shop north of the Bike Kitchen. Just missing a brake lever, grips, and the wheelcovers.
It's a good thing Davis got those pictures, that's how we were able to identify and find him to figure out where the bike was sold.

I kinda like krista's story of chasing the guy off the bus and having the passengers applaud her when she got back on with her bike.

Is it the sketchy looking place at the corner of Heliotrope and Santa Monica with all of the used bikes in the yard?
