"HELP THE HOMELESS" RIDE
Thread started by

RIDE IDEA: everyone get a scarf or 2 or 3 and tag them with "midnight ridazzz care!" or with whatever you want to put on yours. on the ride, make it go through downtown l.a. and hand your scarf to someone in need since it's gonna get freezing in l.a. soon. thrift stores will have cheap scarfs.
doesn't have to be limited to scarfs or is it scarves? gloves, mittens, beanies, etc.

After you've lived in the Victor Valley for as long as I have, 60-70 degree night temperatures in LA are warm.
Even though the LA Basin is 80-100 miles from the Victor Valley, the winter season up here is akin to that of a prairie land.
That and we sit at an altitude of 3000 ft above sea-level, adding to the cold-effect.
I was born in Illinois myself, and I've got a pretty good idea of why my mom/stepdad left there shortly after I was born.
Snow-shoveling is not a fun sport.
Oh, as for what else to hand out to the "houseless", flannels and wool-fabric blankets.
These things are a bit heavy, but keep you warmer than cotton ever will.

does it even get that cold here? back in illinois it -sometimes- gets cold enough that i have to throw on a hoodie.

It gets cold. I'm down. Post the ride and we will show with blankets, clothes, and rot gut alcohol.

If you don't have a place to stay, yeah, it gets that cold here. Hypothermia is a bitch, especially if you already have health problems and are not eating well (or at all). It's even worse if you are alcoholic, addicted, or mentally ill and off your meds, because you may lack the mental capacity to recognize what's happening to you (the symptoms include drowsiness and confusion).
Hypothermia can and does kill people every year, right here in Los Angeles.

I like the idea. The Scarves can be key because the are small enough to carry while riding yet big enough to leave our 'mark' on them where others can see that we're giving back to the community.
And they can be found cheap sometimes at 99 cent only stores or similar places.
Here's another idea:
You may even consider rolling through the little city known as the 'Home of the Homeless' called Santa Monica. We could get a bunch out with our logo on them, leak to the media or let them know what we are doing/did and maybe RE-SPIN our negative image to the SMPD and the community. Get the PR machine working in our favor and maybe someone, will get the picture and tell the SMPD to lighten the F*&k up.
or not.

I would run it by roadblock to see if he's cool with you using the logo for it first. I'm sure he would though.

Check out this guy. He rides a bike and delivers stuff to homeless folks...mostly in Santa Monica. He is homeless himself...

I agree. Santa Monica would be a really good place to do this. There are a lot of of homeless people there (you'd live by the beach if you were homeless, right?), and we could definitely stand to improve our image there.
And yes, it does get cold. It snowed in Malibu last year, remember?

stevo that's brilliant. spin it good!
careful with misprints on those scarves, though. you don't want to change an A to an O and have it say MIDNIGHT RIDAZZ CORE.

I've got one of those retail "guns" that punches a tag thru clothing and can run off as many xerox copies of whatever is needed. Lots of homeless in Santa Monica hang out on the promenade (CAN'T RIDE BIKES ON THE PROMENADE though). ...meet up, ride in all different directions....hand out stuff, meet back up an hour later or so, and have a killer ride. Someone set this up.

hey guys. i think this is a great idea. i happen to be a burrito warrior myself and the only thing would be, we would need people to come ride and carry just the clothes/blankets and whatnot. there is ALOT of shit to carry every week ya know?
plus the kitchen is getting very crowded... so maybe if you guys were planning something you could show up when we are heading out. just dont want to put anyone out. the guys who live in the house are cool, it just gets pretty crowded in there ya know?
if i can help in any way, let me know!
booyah!

speaking of burrito project - those guys are hard to get a hold of! has anyone else had much luck? i've been wanting to get involved but no replies as of yet. i'm assuming they probably just don't need the help at the moment.

thats probably it...
the idea is we would like for other people to start more burrito projects on different nights... in other parts of town, or downtown... it doesnt matter. it only takes about 60 bucks to feed a couple hundred people. the hardest part is finding someone who is willing to give up their kitchen once a week. if anyone has a kitchen and is able to make that kind of commitment, i know alot of us from BPLA would be more than happy to come out and ride. if you need any more info, you can email me at

WOULD NOT IT BE CHEAPER, AND EASIER JUST HANDING OUT BEERS TO THE HOMELESS, WE REALLY HAVE NO PROBLEM CARRYING WHAT WE NEED, PLUS THERE IS NO LAW ABOUT US NOT DRINKING THOSE BEERS AND PASSING THEM OUT, RIGHT ???

Great idea...it does get very cold in DTLA in the winter...
I have a few friends that use to live down on skid row before they cleaned up...this is AWESome...
Why not do both DTLA & Santa Monica....but cities are in need...

maybe this can be incorporated into the Toy Ride 2009? Instead of the ride of all groups after converging in dtla, we would go off in groups for 1/2 hour or so and give stuff to the homeless...then meet up at the after party spot....

Do etttt!!!!! Sounds like a super awesome idea. Making scarves to give out is also super easy and cheap if you use fleece.
I know a group that sends scarves to soldiers over seas as well... if youre interested.

we can give out socks....who doesn't love a fresh pair of tubesocks?
12 packs for cheap at eh swap meet....
I live in Venice and there's bums in my alley that shit in front of my garage. It's nasty, but i feel bad for them. I sucks to have to shit outside almost as much as having to clean up someone else's shit. Life is not always bunnies and flowers.
I also think donating money or time to a homeless shelter or food bank is perhaps a better way to get someone off the streets than to give them stuff that makes it easier to live a life of crime drugs and homelessness.
so I'm kinda torn about the idea of giving out free stuff instead of trying to address the cause of the problem.
Don't get me wrong - if there's a ride, I will join and gladly bring a huge bag of Goodwill-bound clothing to hand out to whomever needs it more than me.....

This is a great idea. I think a lot of people will be down for this ride. And there's no reason it can't be done more than once - to cover different areas in need - there's plenty of them.

Awesome!
In 2006 Hollywood Ridazz did "The Undercover Ride"
and it was around thanksgiving so the ride leaders encouraged everbody to bring clothing donations.
The ride stopped by the Midnight Mission for 10 minutes and we were on our way.
It was great,
Ride on.

That’s the least we can do for those poor homeless soles in dtla given the number to times we have gone through their neighbor hood at midnight blasting music and waking up everyone.

Don't forget to do something for someone in your circle of friends who is "couchsurfing", not working, sick or whatever. Most of us have friends who are struggling, don't we?
There's a wonderful food bank in the SGV...$20 buys 100 pounds of food, no questions asked.
