 Depends how you define "founded". This land was initially subject to European colonization by religious wackos, true. We can see how much good this has done the place, ask the natives.

However, the nation itself as defined by the constitution was created as a secular state, by a bunch of smart guys who for the most part were NOT religious. Any religious nutjob who tries to tell you otherwise is full of shit.

 I always thought the US could have been more like any of the Scandinavian countries. Looking after it's citizens instead of trying to be the police of the world, or whatever it is that's our mission. All the Scandinavian countries have a living standard similar to the US too.
